Notes and tips

After a 2-15 straight up start to the season, the Washington Wizards have fired head coach Flip Saunders. The Wizards were blown out 103-83 at the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday, a game in which they trailed by 30 points at halftime. Saunders was in his third year as head coach of the team, and led the Wizards to a record of 51-130 under his tenure. Wizards assistant coach Randy Wittman will take over an interim basis as the team gets ready for Wednesday’s date with Charlotte. Washington, which is 5-12 against the spread this season, is set as a 5.5-point favorite.

Ohio State has seen a number of fat pointspreads over the last while and hasn’t had much trouble covering. The Buckeyes have been favored by double digits six times over the last eight games and covered in each of those matchups. They’re favored by 23.5 against Penn State on Wednesday and have beaten four Big Ten rivals with losing records by an average of 31.8 points.

Kansas State junior forward Jordan Henriquez has been reinstated on Tuesday after being suspended indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team. Wildcats coach Frank Martin detailed that the 6-foot-11 Henriquez would be available to play in Wednesday's road game versus Texas Tech. Henriquez has played in 17 contests this season - starting six - and is averaging 7.1 points and 5.1 rebounds.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Detroit replaces Victor Martinez by signing Prince Fielder for 9 years at a total cost of $214M. Tigers won AL Cemtral by 15 games LY, are going to be the heavy favorite again this season.

-- With Fielder bagging a $214M deal, that means at the standard 4% rate that agents get, scumweasel agent Scott Boras bags a cool $8.56M.

-- This is the 13th Super Bowl that is a rematch of a regular season tilt; the winner of the first meeting is 5-7 in the Super Bowl meeting.

-- Knicks won by 33 at Charlotte, but Carmelo Anthony scored only one point. Something's amiss with the Knickerbockers.

-- Luol Deng has a torn ligament in his left wrist, so the Bulls' star is out for an extended time, just another injured NBA star in a weird season.

-- Michigan won by hoop at Purdue, as Boilermakers' Robbie Hummel was 6-14 from floor, and is now 16-46 (.348) in his last four games.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud........

13) Houston Astros are thinking of changing their team's name for 2013, when they move into the American League; if they do that, I'd like to give them a suggestion-- how about the Armadillos??? Sounds good to me.

12) Took San Diego State's basketball team over 20 hours to get from San Diego to Laramie for last night's game with Wyoming, their last trip to Laramie, since they're moving to the Big West next season. No more long plane rides to the Rockies, just bus trips in California. Aztecs won 52-42 by the way, yet another win for this surprising young team.

11) Navy joined the Big East in football, which will make them a yearly thorn-in-the-side of everyone else in the league, since defending the option is no picnic, even for teams with superior size/athletic ability.

10) Presidential candidate Mitt Romney made $42M the last two years, and paid $6.2M in taxes. Tim Lincecum just signed a two-year deal worth $40.5M; wonder how much he'll pay in taxes on that deal?

9) By the way, no matter who gets elected President this fall, I'm voting for Mrs Romney as First Lady-- well I'd vote for her if I could.

8) When you listen to Portland Trailblazer broadcasts on TV, the analyst is Mike Rice, former coach at Youngstown State/Duquesne who is father of Rutgers coach Mike Rice- the elder Rice is an excellent analyst.

7) Damn I feel old reading that Trey Griffey, Ken Griffey Jr's son, signed to play WR at Arizona for Rich Rodriguez. I'm not that much younger than Ken Griffey Sr, the kid's grandfather.

6) UCLA coach Ben Howland has a weird habit of using up his timeouts before the last 5:00 of a game; now Howland is a good coach who has won a ton of games, but his program at UCLA is struggling and the vultures are out. Blowing a 13-point halftime lead at Oregon, and using his 4th of five timeouts with 8:01 left, when he had a TV timeout on the next whistle, is something that makes that naysayers howl.

5) Speaking of Oregon, games at Matt Knight Arena are hard to watch on TV because the court is painted in such a funky way. Every time I watch a game from Eugene I think my TV is screwed up.

4) Oakland Raiders hired Denver DC Dennis Allen as head coach, so next fall the Broncos will have their 7th defensive coordinator in seven years, while the Raiders will be working on their 7th coach since Jon Gruden left Oakland after the 2001 season.

3) Orlando Magic won by 19 at Indiana last night, a night after scoring 20 points in the second half at Boston Monday. How does a pro team score 20 points in a half, especially a very good team?

2) A year ago this week, neither Butler or VCU got one vote for the top 25, but both wound up in the Final Four. Any teams like that this year?

1) If anyone has concerns about Prince Fielder's big contract, his weight and durability issues, there's this: Fielder has played six full seasons in the big leagues, playing 157-158-159-162-161-162 games, in the league that doesn't have the DH, so you know you're getting a player who plays.

Report: Pats TE Gronkowski dealing with ligament damage

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is dealing with some ligament damage in his left ankle, the Boston Herald reported on Tuesday.

Gronkowski left the stadium in a walking boot following Sunday's 23-20 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. Despite the injury, Gronkowski is expected to play in the Super Bowl against the New York Giants.

"We’ll see how it goes with Rob, and some of the other players that are getting treatment," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. "We’ll see how it is when we get back out on the field. We haven’t practiced in the last couple of days. We’ll see how it is when it’s time to go."

Gronkowski injured his ankle on a 23-yard reception in the final minute of the third quarter. The second-year tight end later returned to the game, telling reporters he went to get the ankle re-taped.

He finished with five receptions for 87 yards but did not make a catch after he was hurt.

Gronkowski has had a monster season, setting records for tight ends for touchdowns (17) and receiving yards (1,327).

He also came up huge in New England's 45-10 playoff win over Denver, hauling in 10 catches for 145 yards and three touchdowns.

The Patriots are set as 3-point favorites with a 55-point total in next Sunday's game.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Seton Hall Pirates (-6.5, 129)

When the Notre Dame Fighting Irish shocked the then-undefeated No. 1 Syracuse Orange last weekend, Irish coach Mike Brey’s cell phone blew up.

One of the messages he received was a note from New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who also happens to be leading the charge to make sports gambling legal in the Garden State.

“Awesome win, I'll be there to welcome you to the state of New Jersey," Christie texted Brey.

That’s the big challenge for Notre Dame here. After such a big win, sometimes it’s hard to follow that up.

“Most teams -- and it doesn’t make them bad teams -- most teams would have a problem being ready to go Wednesday after Saturday,” Brey told reporters. “Can we be not like most teams and maybe show some special things? That's the challenge over the next two days."

The Irish have covered the number in four of their last five meetings with the Pirates and could be catching them at a good time. Seton Hall has dropped consecutive games straight up and against the number.

LSU Tigers at Mississippi State Bulldogs (-8.5, 131)

Mississippi State won 15 of its first 19 games, but victory No. 16 may have been the one that launched the Bulldogs into the upper echelon of the SEC.

Coming off a bitter loss to rival Mississippi that dropped the Bulldogs to .500 in conference play, Mississippi State outlasted Vanderbilt in overtime Saturday.

The Bulldogs recovered from a rough first half at Vanderbilt, turning an 11-point deficit into a late lead. And while Mississippi State lost the advantage in the final minutes of regulation, it made the plays in overtime for a critical 78-77 victory. Dee Bost scored a game-high 24, and Arnett Moultrie posted his 11th double-double of the season with 21 points and 14 rebounds.

Now they host LSU looking to stay within striking distance of the top three in the SEC (Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Florida). The Tigers sit in a three-way tie for seventh, and have dropped three of their past four games entering a week in which LSU plays the Bulldogs and then hosts top-ranked Kentucky on Saturday.

Most overrated Top-25 team: Murray State Racers

I understand that Murray State, at 20-0 and ranked 11th in this week's poll, is a nice story. But the Racers don’t deserve their lofty ranking. To be in this spot, they had to be ranked above UNLV, San Diego State, Florida, Creighton, and Marquette.

Beating up on college basketball's 266th toughest schedule (according to the Pomeroy rankings) doesn't impress me as much as the pollsters. To me, the Racers are college basketball's version of college football's Boise State Broncos. We are talking about good, solid teams with the ability to get fired up for that one big game. But the occasional game against Dayton or Southern Miss does not compare to teams playing in power conferences.

If the Racers were playing in one of those power conferences, their downfall would be mediocre rebounding and the lack of an inside game. Unfortunately, we will not see Murray State challenged by any major teams until a potential March Madness tilt. But don't be surprised if Murray State is involved in a close, tough contest against surging Austin Peay on February 11, or in one or both of its remaining contests with SE Missouri State.

Most underrated To-25 team: UNLV Runnin' Rebels

Even with the recent loss at San Diego State, I believe the Rebels could easily be ranked eighth or ninth in the nation. Their only losses came on the road to the 13th-ranked Aztecs, at Wichita State (arguably the most underrated team in Div. I) and at Wisconsin. At the same time, they pounded then top-ranked North Carolina and crushed New Mexico in their most recent game.

While UNLV is one of the highest scoring teams in the nation, it has also proven that it can win at a deliberate pace. Illinois tried to slow things down in Chicago and the Rebels rocked the Illini, 64-48. David Rice inherited a boatload of talent when Lon Kruger left for Oklahoma, and Rice has made them a better team by allowing his players' athleticism to shine.

However, this is not just a group of athletes thrown together. There are some major recruits who started elsewhere, but landed in Las Vegas. UNLV still has tough road games at Wyoming and New Mexico along with a rematch with SDSU at the Thomas & Mack on the slate.

Unranked team that should be: Wichita State Shockers

If the pollsters looked beyond the traditional programs a little more, I wouldn't have to alternate Harvard and Wichita State over the last three weeks. At the same time, let the pollsters and casual fans continue to overestimate and underestimate certain teams so we can take advantage at the betting window.

My argument for the Shockers has been made for weeks and I'm not backing down. Adding fuel to my fire is the latest Pomeroy rankings that also feel WSU is highly underrated. In fact, they have the Shockers ranked eighth in the nation. I won't go that far, but 20th seems about right to me. But they are ranked 31st - a full 154 points behind 25th ranked Wisconsin in this week's poll.

Detroit Red Wings at Montreal Canadiens (-155, 5.5)

Some of the names and faces have changed, but the Detroit Red Wings can be just as dominant as they were when they were winning Cups a decade ago.

Detroit will head into the All-Star break as the top team in the league and has won seven straight games heading into Wednesday’s date with the Canadiens, which is the last game on the schedule before the break.

The Wings are so difficult to beat because they have perfected a patient puck-control attack that doesn’t turn the puck over. In today’s NHL, that’s the recipe for long-term success.

“That’s the league now. They’re all like this, it’s 3-1 or 3-2 every night,” coach Mike Babcock told reporters after Monday’s win over St. Louis. “If the other team gets to three first, you’re probably not going to win, so you’ve got to play well without the puck and wait for your chances.”

That’s not exactly one of Montreal’s claims to fame.

The Canadiens have won just two of their last seven and aren’t taking advantage of power play opportunities, sitting 30th in the league converting only 12.2 percent of their odd-man chances.

“There’s still a light at the end there,” Montreal forward Lars Eller said after a 3-1 victory at Toronto. “There are more than 30 games to go and we still have a lot of faith in this locker room. We’ll play one game at a time and see what happens.”

We aren’t so optimistic about the Habs. They are eight points back of eighth spot in the East and will need a tremendous effort from Carey Price to even be in the playoff conversation down the stretch.

If you aren’t afraid of the price tag, take the Red Wings on the road. Otherwise, stick with the under.

Minnesota Timberwolves at Dallas Mavericks (-6, 184)

The Mavericks figured that if they had to be without Dirk Nowitzki for a while, it might as well be sooner rather than later.

He has sat out the two games to work on his conditioning and help is sore right knee heal. He is expect to sit out at least a couple more games and Dallas is surviving without him for now. The Mavs dropped the Hornets 83-81 as 3.5-point favorites in his first absence and then covered as 5-point favorites in a win over Phoenix.

Shawn Marion scored 29 points to lead Dallas to its latest win and is averaging 19.3 points over his last four games.

“Shawn was great,” Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle told reporters. “A lot of plays he made were very timely. ... We needed someone to step up.”

We like Dallas to keep its streak going.

New Orleans Hornets at Oklahoma City Thunder (-13, 183.5)

When you’ve lost eight straight games, it’s hard to stay optimistic.

“It’s extremely frustrating,” New Orleans guard Jarrett Jack told reporters after Monday’s 104-102 loss to San Antonio. “The good part is that we gave ourselves a chance. That’s all that you can really ask for in this league. It just comes down to making plays.”

The Hornets still aren’t making plays, but at least they’re keeping it close lately. Monday’s loss was the third straight game that they had covered the number as the improved to 8-9 against the spread on the year.

With the Thunder’s offense that produces better than 99 points per game, they usually have no problem covering fat pointspreads. But the better play here might be the under.
