Tuesday’s betting tips: Bobcats star PG ailing

    Who’s hot

NBA: Orlando has covered the number in four straight road games.

NBA: The under is 12-4 in the Phoenix Suns’ last 16 overall.

NHL: The New York Islanders have won four of five and 17 of their last 13 home games against Toronto.

NHL: Boston is 14-4 in its last 18 road games.

NCAAB: The over is 5-0 in Baylor’s last five overall.

NCAAB: San Diego State is 21-6-1 against the spread in its 28 road games.

    Who’s not

NBA: New York is 5-12 against the spread in its last 17 overall.

NBA: Memphis is 3-7 against the spread in its last 10 road games.

NHL: Phoenix is 1-6 in its last seven.

NHL: Minnesota has lost 11 straight road games and 15 of their last 18 overall.

NCAAB: Texas is 5-12 against the spread in its last 17 overall.

NCAAB: Marquette is 2-7-1 against the spread in its last 10 home games.

    Key stat

13 – Pittsburgh Penguins sniper Evgeni Malkin has scored a goal in six straight games and has nine tallies to go along with five assists in that span. He leads the NHL with 58 points.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Dwyane Wade, Miami Heat - The Heat were holding out hope that Wade would be able to play Tuesday against Cleveland, but it looks like his ankle injury will keep him on the shelf again. He reportedly received treatment on the ankle Monday.

    Game of the day

Orlando Magic at Indiana Pacers (-3, 183)

    Notable quotable

“An inch here or there and it’s a completely different feeling in this locker room. It’s tough, but it’s part of playing on the road.” – Michigan Wolverines 6-foot-8 forward Jordan Morgan on his team’s struggles on the road. Michigan has dropped each of its last three road games outright, but is actually 10-3-1 against the spread in its last 14 as visitors. The Wolverines visit Purdue Tuesday.

    Notes and tips

Chicago Blackhawks forward Jonathan Toews isn’t expected to play Tuesday against Nashville as he deals with a shoulder injury. The team captain suffered the injury during the second period of Saturday's loss to Nashville and did not return. Coach Joel Quennville said Monday that Toews could potentially miss this weekend's All-Star game. Toews is second on the Blackhawks behind Marian Hossa with 50 points, including 23 assists.

Charlotte Bobcats point guard D.J. Augustin is expected to be sidelined a minimum of three days due to an injury to his big toe. Augustin has a slight crack between two bones in the toe and will receive an injection to seal it. He scored a season-low three points and had three assists in Saturday's 95-89 loss at Chicago and played less than eight minutes in Sunday's game at New Jersey. The 2008 first-round draft pick entered Sunday's game averaging 14.5 points and 6.9 assists for the season.

Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin was suspended three games for his charge on Pittsburgh defenseman Zbynek Michalek. Ovechkin leads the team with 20 goals and sits second with 39 points. The Capitals are back in action Tuesday at home to the Boston Bruins.

      Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Odds to win the Daytona 500 next month......

      8-1—Jimmy Johnson/Casey Kahne/Tony Stewart

      9-1—Kyle Busch

      16-1—Carl Edwards, Kevin Harvick

      18-1—Kurt Busch/Matt Kenseth

      20-1—Matt Kaselowski/Clint Bowyer/Dale Earnhardt/Denny Hamlin/ Jeff Gordon

      25-1—AJ Allmendinger/Greg Biffle.

      ****************

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a winter day......

      13) Stat of the Day and its a pretty good one; Last eight times a #1 seed played a lower seed in the Super Bowl, they're 1-7 SU, 0-8 vs spread.

      12) If I’m a Colts’ fan, have no problem at all if Jim Irsay declines to pay Peyton Manning his $28M roster bonus in early March. #18 has been a great Colt, but he got $20M this year for doing nothing, and there’s no guarantee he’s going to be healthy enough to play in 2012. It makes no financial sense for the team to risk that kind of money on a 36-year old player who has had three neck operations.

If he goes and plays somewhere else, so be it, but it’s a business, and Irsay isn’t in business to throw tens of millions of dollars away.

      11) Pardon my ignorance here, but I need some information on stem cell treatments that these athletes like ARod and Kobe Bryant go to Europe to get. Why are they legal in Europe but not here? Again, I apologize if that’s a dumb question, but I don’t know the answer. Someone give me some knowledge.

      10) ESPN announcers have been whining about the heat at the Australian Open tennis tournament. Hey, come to Albany, scrape the ice off your windshield every morning, and I’ll go to Melbourne and roast in the Australian sun, while watching Maria Sharapova hit backhands. Deal?

      9) The Giants’ bandwagon is officially rolling and overflowing, but before you bet the kid’s tuition on Big Blue, keep in mind the Giants scored 394 points this season and gave up 400. Back in 2007, they scored 373 points and allowed 351, but they were a 12-point dog in that Super Bowl.

      8) Interesting to note that the two best WRs in the Super Bowl, Wes Welker/Victor Cruz, neither one was drafted. Welker went to Texas Tech so there’s no excuse for scouts missing on him. Cruz was hidden away at I-AA UMass.

      7) Rumors were flying Sunday night that Oregon coach Chip Kelly was going to coach the Buccaneers, but that fell through; unclear whether Kelly had an actual interest in Tampa Bay, or whether he was just using the Bucs to prop up his name with potential Oregon recruits.

      6) Does Joe Philbin’s hiring in Miami mean the Dolphins will pursue Packers’ backup QB Matt Flynn in free agency? Matt Moore did a nice job for Miami the second half of the season, but Flynn is already well-versed in Philbin’s offense.

      5) 15 current Giants, seven current Patriots played in that Super Bowl four years ago.

      4) If you care, Golf Channel is showing the tournament from Abu Dhabi live starting at 4am Thursday morning; it is Eldrick Woods’ 2012 debut. They’re re-airing the broadcast during the day, when more humans are awake. It’ll be interesting how long Woods continues to be a drawing card if he doesn’t win a tournament this year, either.

      3) If NBA playoffs started today, the Knicks wouldn’t be going, another testament to one of the most screwed-up franchises in all of pro sports. Seriously, you, me and our friends could run the team better than Jim Dolan does. At least if we owned the team, we’d know enough to let a pro like Donnie Walsh make decisions and stay the hell out of his way.

      2) Marco Scutaro has earned $10.165M in his 10-year major league career, spanning 1,103 games; he is a pro’s pro, a gritty, gutty player who is always more productive than you realize. I know the A’s have missed him, and I’m pretty sure the Red Sox will, too.

      1) Interesting story on SI.com this morning about how back in the spring of 1969, Steelers offered Joe Paterno $70,000 a year to be their coach; he was making $20,000 a year after this third year at Penn State.

Paterno declined, the Steelers hired Chuck Noll and both sides wound up prospering greatly. How the course of sports history would’ve been different had Paterno said yes.

Baylor Bears at Oklahoma Sooners (5.5, 143)

Baylor looked almost unbeatable when it started the season with a school-record 17-game winning streak. But losses at Kansas and at home against Missouri last week exposed some of the Bears’ weaknesses, and they subsequently dropped from No. 3 to No. 7 in the latest rankings.

Baylor, sitting at 4-2 in the Big 12, Baylor is tied for third with Iowa State, two games behind the undefeated Jayhawks. The Bears will look to get back on track at Oklahoma, but it won’t be easy. The Sooners are 9-1 at home this season and have proven they can knock off ranked opponents, most notably in a victory over Kansas State on Jan. 14.

In an 89-88 home loss to Missouri, the Bears’ defensive woes continued. Baylor has as much length inside as any team in the country, but the guards had trouble matching up man-to-man with the Tigers’ quickness outside.

The Bears are giving up 71.8 points per game in conference play, which ranks only ahead of Oklahoma. Guard Pierre Jackson had 20 points and 15 assists in the latest loss, and the junior has 45 assists in his past four games.

                Pick: Over

Michigan Wolverines at Purdue Boilermakers (-4.5, 129)

Michigan and host Purdue enter their game off losses, but they got them in entirely different ways.

The No. 22 Wolverines, who suffered a 66-64 defeat at Arkansas, nearly rallied back from a 20-point deficit but came up short when Trey Burke’s 3-pointer rimmed out at the buzzer.

Purdue, meanwhile, lost 83-58 at Michigan State after a flight delay caused the Boilermakers to bus 276 miles overnight just to arrive in time for the game. The Wolverines need a win to remain in a tie for first in the Big Ten, while Purdue is trying to avoid falling further behind. Purdue has won five of the last six against Michigan.

The loss to Arkansas is one the Wolverines won’t have a problem getting over. The Razorbacks started hot, hitting their first 10 shots, and Michigan was clearly the better team in the second half.

                Pick: Wolverines

Pick 'n' roll: Tuesday's best NBA bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Cavaliers at Miami Heat (N/A)

The last time LeBron James faced his former team, the Cleveland Cavaliers went on a 18-5 run to finish the game in a 102-90 victory.

King James did his part by posting a triple-double, but it wasn’t nearly enough to help Heat backers cover as 13.5-point favorites.

“He’s like a brother to me,” Cavs rookie Tristan Thompson told of James. “But at the same time, it’s a business. We’re trying to go to Miami and win the game. That whole friendship feeling is out the window when we get on the court, and I think he has the same mindset, too.”

James probably won’t have Dwyane Wade to lean on Tuesday as his partner in crime continues to battle an ankle injury. He has missed the last four games and is listed as questionable again.

                  Pick: Under

New York Knicks at Charlotte Bobcats (4.5, 191)

The Knicks are basically grasping at straws for answers as they head into Tuesday’s game having lost six in a row both straight up and against the spread.

Their latest setback was a 119-114 double overtime loss to Denver as 2-point favorites. Carmelo Anthony finished with 25 points, but some are speculating he is taking too many shots. ‘Melo had 30 attempts in 45 minutes against the Nuggets.

"There is a bunch of stuff that goes through my mind: what am I doing? What am I not doing?" Anthony told reporters. "I have been in this situation before when shots don't go in. Should I pass it more? Bunch of stuff coming in my mind. I am sitting here thinking, maybe I should take the blame for the games we are losing, our offensive struggles. I will take it."

New York needs to get Amar’e Stoudemire more involved in the offense. He had 12 points against Denver and has topped the 20-point plateau just once during the team’s losing skid.

This may be the game the Knicks get back on track. Charlotte will be without point guard D.J. Augustine and the Bobcats allow more than 101 points per game.

                  Pick: Over

Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL bets
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

                            HOT TEAM: Detroit Red Wings

The Western Conference has been a bastion of activity when it comes to the “it” team. There are several clubs who have carried that label at times only to see another squad rise up and take it away. Minnesota had it for a while. Chicago, too. But now, it resides in Hockeytown.

Detroit is turning a corner that it may never go back on. The Red Wings have just two losses in the new calendar year. A 3-2 win over Columbus on Saturday night was Detroit’s eighth in January and sixth in a row. And they are doing it with defense, as the scores show. In fact, six of those eight wins came by way of 3-2 scores. Now, that’s consistency.

Things are still ultra-tight in the Central Division, as the Red Wings closed Saturday just one point ahead of St. Louis and Chicago. But as long as this type of steady play continues in Detroit, a No. 1 seed in the West won't be far behind.

                            COLD TEAM: Buffalo Sabres

The Sabres are learning fast that money doesn’t buy championships in hockey. Under new ownership, Buffalo added payroll, beefed up its defensive corps, and even redid its training and locker-room facilities. But on Saturday night, the Sabres fell five games under .500, with a 4-2 loss at St. Louis, their fifth in a row.

Coach Lindy Ruff, the league’s longest tenured coach, is in danger of losing his job, goaltender Ryan Miller is searching for answers, and Christian Ehrhoff, the big summer acquisition on the back line, is on injured reserve with an upper-body injury.

Other than that, things are just fine for Buffalo, a team that closed Saturday’s action nine points out of the final playoff spot, and tied with Carolina for the lowest point total (43) in the East. Anything can happen in this game, and comebacks do occur, but you’re probably pretty safe treating the Sabres, moving forward, as a fade team.

                            OVER PLAY: Vancouver Canucks

The topsy-turvy beginning to the season for the defending Western Conference champions is now a distant memory, as the Canucks have bounced back, regained their dominant form, and seem primed for another run at the Stanley Cup Finals.

A 4-3 win over San Jose on Saturday afternoon gave the Canucks 62 points and an eight-point cushion over Colorado in first place of the Northwest Division. And while the goaltending has been adequate, it hasn’t stopped the Canucks from becoming one of the better over buys in the league.

In the last five games headed into Tuesday’s game against Edmonton, Vancouver has gone 3-0-2 over, including three games with at least six goals total. The run has given them a 23-21-4 over mark this season, and with only two games on their schedule the rest of this month, expect those high-scoring forwards to be rested and ready for more.

                            UNDER PLAY: Los Angeles Kings

New coach Darryl Sutter has steadied the ship a bit in Los Angeles. Through Saturday night, in fact, the Kings were 8-2-6 since he replaced Terry Murray. In the new regime, the scoring still needs some work, but the defense and goaltending are there, and you know what that means in the betting world: Unders.

A 3-1 loss to Colorado on Saturday was Los Angeles' 27th under of the season. It extended an overless streak to five games (three unders, two pushes), and reinforced the fact that the Kings may be the best under bet out there.

And as long as the Kings' duo in net -- Jonathan Quick and Jonathan Bernier -- maintain their combined 2.09 goals-against average, Los Angeles games will continue to be boring, but profitable for under players.

                            SURVEYING THE SCHEDULE:

** An impressive 3-2 overtime win over the Bruins in Boston on Saturday made for a great trip home and gave the Rangers plenty to feel good about with plenty of time on their hands. In fact, with the All-Star break on the horizon, the Rangers will play just two games the rest of this month, including Tuesday’s home tilt against Winnipeg. So, the top team in the East has a good stretch here to relax and get ready for the home stretch.

** It’s the same deal for the Blues, who also just have two games left in January. The big difference here, though, is that they’re in the back-to-back form, and it begins on Monday at Detroit. Indeed, depending on how you look at it, St. Louis has a golden opportunity or a daunting task, facing the Red Wings and Penguins in a span of 24 hours this week. But either way, the Blues will have plenty of time to think about it, as they won’t play again until Feb. 3.

Anaheim Ducks at Dallas Stars (-115, 5.5)

The Anaheim Ducks still have a lot of work to do to get back in the playoff picture, but their recent run is giving their supporters hope.

With Sunday’s 3-2 win over Colorado, the Ducks moved to within 11 points of eighth spot in the West. That’s a major accomplishment considering they were 20 points back of the last playoff position a little more than two weeks ago.

Bobby Ryan and Ryan Getzlaf are finally heating up and goaltender Jonas Hiller is standing on his head between the pipes. Hiller is 5-0-1 in his last six appearances, and made 43 saves in Sunday’s win.

"In this run, he's been spectacular," coach Bruce Boudreau said of Hiller. "I'll put my bid in right now. If he's not player of the week, player of the month, I mean, it's bad enough they don't even sometimes know we exist out there in Anaheim — that, I'm learning quickly — but I hope they do take notice of how well he's played and give him some recognition."

One of the teams the Ducks need to catch is Dallas, so this will be just another big game on a schedule that’ll be full of them from here on out.

                              Pick: Ducks

Philadelphia Flyers at Florida Panthers (-105, 5)

There was a lot that the Philadelphia Flyers could have worried about in a 6-5 shootout loss to the Boston Bruins.

Ilya Bryzgalov had another tough game and the Flyers were down 3-1 by the time the opening intermission rolled around. However, they stuck together and battled back to at least earn a single point.

"We didn't back down from them even though we were missing some key pieces to our team, and I think that shows," said rookie center Brayden Schenn. "It's a good sign that we don't back down to anyone and we accept a good challenge. Having (eight) rookies in the lineup, it's fun to be a part of."

With all the youngsters in the dressing room, it’s often hard to know what you’ll get from the Flyers. They’ll be ready to take care of business against Florida though.

The Panthers have just two wins in their last eight.

                              Pick: Flyers
