Thursday’s betting tips: Utes dismiss leading scorer

    Who’s hot

NBA: Miami is 9-4 against the spread in its last 13 home games.

NBA: Utah has covered in seven of its last eight overall.

NHL: Ottawa has won five of its last six.

NHL: Boston has won 12 of its last 16 road games.

NCAAB: Virginia is 23-9 ATS in its last 32 overall.

NCAAB: The under is 7-1 in Pepperdine’s last eight road games.

    Who’s not

NBA: Los Angeles Lakers are 1-6 against the spread in their last seven road games.

NBA: New Orleans is 10-4 against the spread in its last 14 games in Houston.

NHL: Columbus has won nine of its last 33 home games.

NHL: Minnesota is 2-14 in its last 16.

NCAAB: Wake Forest is 0-11 against the spread in its last 11 games at Duke.

NCAAB: North Carolina is 1-5 against the spread in its last six meetings with Virginia Tech.

    Key stat

11.3 – The North Carolina Tar Heels rank first nationally with a +11.3 rebound margin. They average 43.1 rebounds per game compared with 31.7 from their opponents. UNC visits Virginia Tech, which allows only 59.6 points per game, but struggles on the glass.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Kris Letang, Pittsburgh Penguins – Kris Letang has practiced with the team Tuesday and Wednesday and may return to the lineup as early as Thursday against the New York Rangers. Letang has been out of the lineup since suffering a concussion on Nov. 26. Before that he had 19 points in 22 games.

    Game of the day

Los Angeles Lakers at Miami Heat (n/a)

    Notable quotable

"I would never count Joe out. My quarterback can go out and beat anybody. My quarterback can go out and beat anybody. Anybody. My boy can go and play with the best of them. That's why we're in the position that we're in. And a majority of the league is at home watching him play. My quarterback has been in the playoffs every year he has been in the league. Three of the four years my quarterback has won double-digit games. Every year he's won playoff games. - Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs on ESPN's First Take defending quarterback Joe Flacco. The Ravens are set as 7-point underdogs at New England.

    Notes and tips

Utah’s confidence level won’t be high when the Utes host Arizona as 15-point underdogs. Senior guard Josh Watkins, who led Utah in scoring with 15.6 points per game, was dismissed from the team on Wednesday morning for violation of team rules. Watkins was one of the lone bright spots on the roster and his dismissal couldn't have come at a worse time. Aside from their 81-45 blowout loss to California, the Utes have been fairly competitive in conference play, as three of the their last four games were decided by fewer than five points.

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning was forced to leave Wednesday’s practice early with a stomach virus. Coach Tom Coughlin called it “a stomach bug, hopefully a 24-hour deal" and the rest of the Giants didn’t seem overly concerned either. "If there is one guy who can miss a practice Wednesday mentally, it's No. 10," guard Chris Snee said of Manning. "He was probably in here on Monday and Tuesday looking at film." New York is set as a 2.5-point underdog at San Francisco. Meanwhile, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady also sat out practice, but it is being described as a rest day. He has been dealing with a sore left shoulder.

      Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Why did the Texas Rangers pay over $100M for Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish? Why not just overpay for CJ Wilson, a known commodity?

-- San Diego State fell behind 10-0 in the Pit in Albuquerque, then came storming back for an impressive 75-70 win over New Mexico. Have to think Steve Fisher is in the top three for national Coach of the Year.

-- Impressive road win for Cincinnati, which is 3-0 on road in Big East play, winning 70-67 at UConn.

-- Wichita State/Creighton both came from behind in second half to win on the road, not easy to do in the Missouri Valley. Bluejays won by a point at Missouri State; Wichita won by 3 at Northern Iowa.

-- Poor Towson State has now lost 38 games in a row; the school is in Baltimore, where there are a lot of good players. Hard to figure.

-- Indiana couldn't stand prosperity; up 41-34 at the half, they let the lead slip and lost 70-69 at Nebraska, a big win for Doc Sadler.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind........

      13) Watched a tennis match late Tuesday night that took 4 hours, 41 minutes to play. Tremendous stamina these guys have, especially when you realize one of the players is 6-foot-9. Add tennis to the lengthy list of sports where the athletes are tougher than baseball players. You think Rocco Baldelli is going the distance in a fifth set tie-breaker? Hell no.

      12) John Isner, the 6-9 guy, said after the match he played the last three points with a cracked racket. Are there rules against changing rackets during a game? Why would he play with a cracked racket?

      11) Tennessee Volunteers have a new player; 6-8 Jamell Stokes, who is an early enrollee who really should still be playing high school ball. He looked good in his debut against Kentucky Saturday, but he is way behind the learning curve. His talent level seems really high, though.

      10) Want a kid for your All-Glue Team, kids who enjoy doing the dirty work that helps teams win? Try Pierce Hornung, #4 on Colorado State; he’s a tough kid who has helped the Rams off to a fast start in the MWC this season. Good player, the kind every good team needs.

      9) A Chicago Cub aficionado named Paul Sullivan points out that in the Cubs’ 81 home games LY, Geovany Soto hit the Cubs’ only HR onto Waveland Ave, behind the leftfield bleachers. Part of Theo Epstein’s new job is to find a bit more righthanded power.

      8) Tim Lincecum turned down $17M a year from the Giants, is asking for $21M in arbitration; hope he gets it. Giants are the rotten bastards who are blocking the Oakland A’s from getting their new ballpark in San Jose. Hope Lincecum and Matt Cain take them to the cleaners.

      7) I know no one cares about my fantasy baseball team, but this is weird. Victor Martinez/Carl Crawford both went down with offseason injuries this week, making it six of my 25 players who have needed surgery this winter, due to injuries that occurred since the regular season ended. That means 24% of my roster is currently down and Jose Reyes is one of the healthy ones. Terrific.

      6) Phillies already have $104M in salary committed to only six players for the 2013 season. Sounds like some young players are going to have a chance to make that team.

      5) If I’m the Mets, I take David Wright’s spray charts and tailor the new, shorter fences to perfectly suit where he hits the ball, to help ensure that he puts up much bigger numbers in 2012. That way, you either maximize his trade value, or you help restore the confidence of your team’s most popular player.

      4) Victor Martinez’ torn ACL means a hell of a lot of walks are heading Miguel Cabrera’s way this summer.

      3) Atlanta Falcons will have two new coordinators next year, with Dirk Koetter replacing Mike Mularkey (Jaguars’ new coach) and Mike Nolan replacing Brian Van Gorder (off to be Auburn’s DC), so the Falcons will have a different look next season.

      2) Early weather forecast for Candlestick Park Sunday; rainy weather. 40 years ago, Candlestick actually had artificial turf, only big league stadium in California that had fake grass.

      1) Someone named Chris Gesper points out that Tom Brady has played five games against the Ravens; his 55.9% completion percentage in those games is his lowest against any team.

              Thursday, January 19

Vanderbilt won its last seven games, including a win at Marquette, since losing at home to Indiana State; Commodores won three of last four vs Alabama, winning last visit here, only road team win in last seven regular season series games. Alabama is 7-1 at home; they're shooting 27.8% on arc (338th in country). SEC home favorites of 7 or less points are 4-1 vs spread. Vandy is 3-1 on road, with only loss in OT at Louisville. Bama lost four of last five games against top 100 teams.

Virginia won its last four games with Georgia Tech, all by 8 points or less; they won last three visits here by 2-4-7 points. Cavaliers haven't played in week since 61-58 loss at Duke ended their 12-game win streak- they're 3-1 on road, with decent wins at Oregon/LSU. ACC underdogs are 14-3-1 so far this season, 7-1 at home. Tech lost five of its last six games, dropping last three home games, including bad loss to Mercer. Yellow Jackets are 2-6 vs teams in the top 100.

Cal lost Solomon to grades this week, which hurts; Bears lost four of last five games with Washington, losing 84-69/109-77 in last two visits here. Cal is 13-0 at home, 1-0 on neutral floor, 1-4 on road, with only win at Oregon; they make 41.5% of 3-pointers, but teams that rely on 3's often struggle on road. Pac-12 home teams are 7-5 vs spread when number is 5 or less points. Huskies won five of last six games since South Dakota St beat them by 19 at home, which left U-Dub 6-5 at the time.

BYU (-9.5) won 73-65 at LMU Jan 5, in game that was tied at the half, with Lions shooting just 34% from floor, 5-26 from arc. 16-4 Cougars won last five games since losing WCC debut at St Mary's, winning home games by 36-25-17 points. WCC teams all play in gyms, but BYU plays in a 22,000-seat arena, big difference. WCC home favorites of 15+ points are 5-3 vs spread. LMU is 4-2 on road, beating UCLA in Sports Arena and winning both its WCC road games, at San Diego/USF.

Illinois has been off for nine days since knocking off #1 Ohio State last week at home; Illini is just 4-5 in last nine games with Penn State, losing three of last four visits here- they're 2-1 in true road games, winning at Maryland/Northwestern, losing by 15 at Purdue. Penn State is 1-5 in Big Dozen, with four losses by 12+ points; somehow they beat Purdue by 20 in this gym, which makes no sense. Big Dozen home underdogs of 5 or less points are 7-1 vs spread.

North Carolina won six of last seven games with Virginia Tech, but lost last visit here 74-70; teams split last four games played here. Seven of last ten series games were decided by 6 or less points. Tar Heels lost by 33 at Florida State Saturday, their third straight road loss-- their one win on road is at #141 NC-Asheville. ACC underdogs are 14-3-1 so far this season, 7-1 at home. Hokies lost first three ACC games by total of nine points, with ugly losses to Wake Forest/Boston College.

Long Beach State won seven of last eight games with Cal Poly, winning last three visits here by 3-6-16 points; 49ers outscored Poly 16-7 from foul line, Mustangs were just 1-9 behind arc in 55-50 Long Beach State win (-9) Jan 5th. Big West home teams are 1-6 vs spread if number is 5 or less points. 49ers played #5 non-conference schedule in country, are 5-0 in Big West, with Poly win only one of five by less than 10 points. Mustangs are 2-3 in Big West, with four games decided by 7 or less.

Underdogs covered five of last six Stanford-Washington State games, as Cardinal is 2-3 in last five visits here. Stanford is 3-1 on road, losing by 11 at Oregon, then winning in four OTs at Oregon State two nights later. Pac-12 home teams are 7-5 vs spread when number is 5 or less points. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

North Carolina Tar Heels at Virginia Tech Hokies (6, 143)

The Virginia Tech Hokies are finding out how quickly things can change in the world of college basketball. Despite an inexperienced roster, the Hokies looked pretty good before conference play began.

Since then, not so much. They dropped their third game in a row both straight up and against the spread Saturday at Boston College, falling 61-59 as 10-point favorites.

“The one thing I wasn’t fooling myself – I know how green we are,” coach Seth Greenberg told reporters. “Was it fool’s gold? Winning at Oklahoma State [on Dec. 31] is hard, that’s a hard place to win. Playing Syracuse the way we played them, that showed promise. But it’s a long season and these young guys having to be ready to play every night is a new experience."

They're in for a brand new experience Thursday against a North Carolina club that's coming off a disgusting 33-point loss at Florida State.

Fearing a stampede from the Seminoles fans, Tar Heels coach Roy Williams pulled his starters off the floor with 14 seconds remaining. Center Tyler Zeller called it the "most embarrassing thing I've ever done in my life."

The Heels have hit just 11 of their 51 trey attempts so far in league play, but you know that slump won't last with their snipers.

                Pick: Tar Heels

Illinois Fighting Illini at Penn State Nittany Lions (4, 123)

The Fighting Illini have had more than a week to come down from the high of upsetting Ohio State on Jan. 10.

Illinois shocked the No. 5 Buckeyes thanks to a historic game from shooting guard Brandon Paul. The junior put on one of the greatest performances of the college basketball season, scoring 43 points to tie the third-highest, single-game point total in school history.

Paul and Illinois collide with another Big Ten star when they visit Penn State and its dynamic scorer Tim Frazier. The junior has been red-hot in his last three games with 71 points.

However, that wasn’t enough for the Nittany Lions, who lost all three outings and head into Thursday with one win in conference play.

                Pick: Over

Ice picks: Thursday’s best NHL bets
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa Senators at San Jose Sharks (-180, 5.5)

If the Sharks think they’re going to waltz past the Ottawa Senators Thursday, they have another thing coming.

Ottawa has won five of its last six, including victories over Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and New York. The Sens found themselves down 2-0 to Toronto Maple Leafs Tuesday and battled all the way back for a 3-2 road win. The newly-acquired Kyle Turris scored the winner in the third period after also setting up the tying goal.

“You won’t carry (the play) in a lot of games when you’re playing a lot on the road in a short period of time,” Jason Spezza told reporters about his club picking up at least a point in each of their last 10 road games. “To win when you don’t have your best game (Tuesday) speaks a lot about our team right now.”

With everything clicking for the Sens, they’re worth a shot at this price.

                          Pick: Senators

Edmonton Oilers at St. Louis Blues (-250, 5)

As if things weren’t going bad enough for the Edmonton Oilers on the injury front, Taylor Hall fell in warm-up before Tuesday’s game and ended up getting clipped in the forehead by a teammate’s skate.

He took 30 stitches above his eyebrow and sat out Edmonton’s 4-2 loss at Columbus. He is still listed as questionable for Thursday’s tilt with the Blues, but word has it he wants back into the lineup.

“A little bit of a manpower problem, for starters,” head coach Tom Renney told reporters after the loss. “And we came a little un-glued in the second period … and a tough start in the third. We just couldn’t muster up enough to push through.”

The Oilers desperately need Hall’s attacking skills with Jordan Eberle out until after the All-Star break and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins on the shelf with a shoulder injury. Edmonton has won just twice since Christmas and hasn’t managed more than two goals in any of its last five games.

That, in combination with St. Louis’ tight defensive system, make the under look pretty tasty.

                          Pick: Under

New Orleans Hornets at Houston Rockets (-10, 186)

All things considered, the Houston Rockets have to be pretty happy with their start to the season.

They started the year with seven games on the road in their first 10 contests and head into Thursday’s game having won six of their last seven. They’re now at 7-7 straight up and 9-5 against the spread after pounding Detroit 97-80 on Tuesday.

Six different Rockets scored in double-figures, while Samuel Dalembert led the way with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

"It was a big win for us to get back to .500," Rockets coach Kevin McHale told reporters. "I told our guys that schedule we had to start off the year was brutal, the hardest in the league. I didn't know when we'd get back to .500. We got back to .500 pretty quickly."

Houston’s depth should be too much for New Orleans to handle.

                            Pick: Rockets

Dallas Mavericks at Utah Jazz (-2.5, 184)

The L.A. Clippers might be known as Lob City, but the Utah Jazz looked like the real high fliers in Tuesday’s 108-79 blowout win over the Clips.

Utah got 20 points from Paul Millsap and a host of highlight-reel dunks from reserve Jeremy Evans to upstage Blake Griffin. More importantly, it was the seventh time the Jazz have covered the number in their last eight games.

“I guess people know who we are now (and) we’re going to continue to try to fight (and) continue to try and get better,” Millsap told reporters following the win.
This is a tough spot for the Mavericks, who visit those Clippers Wednesday before traveling to Utah for this one.

With the Jazz putting up at least 100 points in three of their last four, Dallas might have a tough time keeping up in a track meet on short rest.

                            Pick: Jazz
