Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Cedrick Lindsay, Richmond Spiders – Lindsay, Richmond’s starting point guard, suffered a right knee bone bruise in Saturday’s home win over Temple and is considered questionable for Tuesday’s meeting with George Washington. Lindsay is averaging 12.6 points per game and team-leading 3.9 assists per contest.

Notes and tips

The New Orleans Hornets could get a boost to their starting lineup if starting small forward Trevor Ariza is healthy to play Wednesday against Memphis. Ariza, who is averaging 9.8 points and 5.4 rebounds in five games this season, practiced Tuesday for the first time since suffering a groin strain on Jan. 2. The Hornets have just one win since he hit the shelf, going 2-6 against the spread. The Hornets are set as 4-point favorites.

The Wisconsin Badgers lead the nation in points allowed (48.5) and field-goal percentage defense (35.1), but will have their hands full with a pair of Northwestern snipers Wednesday. The Wildcats boast two of the Big Ten's top three scorers in senior small forward John Shurna (first, 19.1 ppg) and junior shooting guard Drew Crawford (third, 17.6), both of whom are shooting better than 42 percent from 3-point range. Wisconsin opened as a 10.5-point favorite with a 116.5-point total.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud........

13) OK, so I almost fell out of my chair Monday when Kobe Bryant had the ball in a tie game with 0:07 left and he actually passed the ball to an open teammate!!!! And the teammate (Derek Fisher) made the shot; it was almost like real basketball!!! Excellent.

12) Laker coach Mike Brown’s son plays for that Mater Dei team that was playing ball in Springfield, MA over the weekend. I’m guessing they have a pretty healthy booster club.

11) NBA referee Joey Crawford might be the nicest guy on earth, I have no idea, but he sure looks like a mean dude.

10) An authentic pair of NBA game shorts costs $150 on NBA.com.

9) Detroit Pistons’ charter flight made an emergency landing at Houston’s Hobby Airport Monday night; something about trouble with the plane’s landing gear. Thankfully, the pilot landed the plane safely.

8) I’m a big fan of the replay system in tennis; find myself rooting for close calls, so we can see more challenges.

7) My new IPhone is off to a great start; its lot of fun to tinker with and learn about- the staff at the Apple Store in Crossgates here in Albany is very outstanding in customer service. Very patient, very nice people.

6) Andre Ethier signed a 1-year, $10.95M contract with the Dodgers, meaning he needs a big 2012 to strike it rich on the free agent market next winter. My hands are shaking as I think the A’s once traded Ethier to acquire Milton effin’ Bradley. Somehow, that got left out of Moneyball script. Why did we ever trade for Milton freakin' Bradley?

5) Happier thought: New Rams’ coach Jeff Fisher was a good Samaritan Sunday night, stopping to help a couple of teenagers who were in a rolled over car on a Tennessee highway. Both youngsters survived, and Fisher signed a five-year, $35M contract to coach my favorite NFL team Tuesday. Good times are ahead.

4) So its January 18 and there are two unbeaten teams left in college hoop; anyone out there have Murray State as one of the two teams?

Didn’t think so.

3) When I was in Las Vegas for the first weekend of the 2010 NCAA tournament at MGM Grand, there were ton of Kansas people strutting around the hotel like they owned the place, nice enough people but cocky about their Jayhawks winning a championship. Then the games started and Kansas lost to Northern Iowa. Huge upset.

Shock. Disbelief. Stunned silence. More disbelief.

I think of that afternoon every time I see a Kansas home game on TV now. Hopefully they’re a little less cocky now, but I doubt it.

2) NFL is king of television: Giant-Packer game had an average audience over 45M+, very big. Whoever decided to put playoff games on in primetime deserves a raise.

NFL opening line report: Early action shifting odds

NFC Championship Game, New York Giants at San Francisco 49ers, 6:30 p.m. ET Sunday

The 49ers money that poured in after books hung San Fran -1 or pick-‘em in the NFC Championship Game might be misleading sharp action, one industry leader told ***********.

“We think most of the money is going to come in on the Giants and these are false moves,” said Jay Kornegay, director of the Las Vegas Hilton SuperBook. “I think they’re just trying to drive the line up.”

Kornegay also expects the public to back the Giants in a big way.

“They haven’t been on San Fran all year,” he said. “I can’t see ‘em being on San Fran here against this Giants team. I’m pretty confident it will be close to a pick by kickoff, or the Giants might even be favored by kickoff.”

Nevertheless, the Hilton and other books were forced to react to the early money. The Hilton moved from pick to Niners -1.5. Offshores, which opened anywhere from Giants -1 to Niners -1, generally moved to Niners -2.5.

BetCris was offering Niners -3 (even) late Sunday night.

Expect this line to be all over the place this week.

In Week 10, the Niners beat the Giants 27-20, covering as 4-point favorites. The score went over the 42.5 total.

The game wasn’t decided until the final minute, when the Niners batted down Eli Manning’s fourth-down pass inside their 10-yard line.

Super Bowl futures update

The Giants have won and covered four straight, outscoring their opponents 121-50. If they go on to win it all, it will be the worst of the four possible outcomes for books’ Super Bowl futures.

A few bettors hold 80-to-1 Giants tickets; more have the Giants in the 60-to-1 to 30-to-1 range.

But, as usual, Super Bowl futures cashed for the books. They wrote boatloads of worthless tickets on the Packers, Saints, Steelers and more.

“We were taking big bets on everybody except the Jaguars, basically,” Kornegay said. “We don’t have any VCUs out there, that’s for sure.”

MGM Mirage sportsbook manager Jeff Stoneback said only the Lions could have caused a loss on Super Bowl futures.

“The Giants would be our smallest winner, then the 49ers,” he said.

AFC Championship Game, Baltimore Ravens at New England Patriots, 3 p.m. ET Sunday

MGM Mirage’s opening line of 7.5 for Ravens-Patriots looked solid Sunday night, as if it might hold all week. Sharps didn’t pounce either way.

“Apparently it’s a good line because nobody’s jumped on it,” Stoneback said. “It hasn’t moved. Hopefully next Sunday we can still say it was a good line.”

But that line wasn’t unanimous. Pinnacle was offering -9 late Sunday.

Wynn Las Vegas sportsbook manager John Avello opened at -7 and moved to -7 (-120) after taking Patriots money.

“Call it three-and a half for homefield and they’re probably three-and-a-half points better than Baltimore, so that’s my number,” Avello told ***********, adding he hopes he doesn’t have to move to 7.5.

Stoneback said the line has to be more than a touchdown given how impressive the Pats looked Saturday, when they blasted Denver 45-10.

“They seem to be clicking at the right time,” he said. “They made a good Denver defense look bad.”

Most books are using a total of 49.5 -- by far the highest for a Baltimore game all season. The Ravens own the league’s No. 3 defense (16.6 points).

“It’s the combination of New England’s offense and its defense,” Stoneback said, meaning the Pats can give up points as fast as they score them.

New England beat Baltimore 23-20 in Week 6 at home last season, but when they met in the playoffs after the 2009 season, the Ravens rolled 33-14 in Foxborough.

Baltimore rushed for 234 yards and four touchdowns, and intercepted Tom Brady three times in that upset. The Ravens were getting 3.5 points.

Cincinnati Bearcats at UConn Huskies (-6.5, 129)

It doesn’t sound like the UConn Huskies are going to get Ryan Boatright back in the lineup anytime soon as the NCAA investigates possible eligibility infractions again. It’s a big loss in the backcourt, but the Huskies aren’t going to back down.

"We were energized, tonight," coach Jim Calhoun told reporters after UConn’s 67-53 win over Notre Dame without Boatright. ''We had a pretty emotional talk. But it is about us. It is not about anyone but us and we can't control the world but we can control what we do. Tonight we stayed with things and the biggest thing in life is just staying with things."

On the upside, 6-foot-10 center Andre Drummond is having a heck of a year, giving the Huskies a major presence in the paint. He’s putting up 10.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per game and has 11 blocks in his last four games.

He’ll likely see a lot of Yancy Gates in this one.

Creighton Bluejays at Missouri State Bears (1, 146)

Creighton is off to its best start since 2004, but faces a tough road test against Missouri State, which has won six straight against the Bluejays.

The Bears knocked off Creighton in the conference opener in Omaha this year, 77-65. Kyle Weems and Anthony Downing combined for 57 points as Missouri State overcame a halftime deficit for the fourth straight time against Creighton.

The 18th-ranked Bluejays have since won six in a row to move into a tie for first place in the Missouri Valley with Wichita State and will be out for revenge here.

Creighton is 6-1 on the road this year, including a 3-0 mark in conference play. The Bluejays have given up big leads in their past two road games against Illinois State and Bradley, but ultimately won both games by nine.

Sophomore sensation Doug McDermott leads the MVC with 24.3 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. McDermott became the fifth player in program history to reach 1,000 points during their second season in a 90-71 win over Southern Illinois.

The Bluejays have seven players that shoot better than 41 percent from long range and their attack may be too much for the Bears.

Toronto Raptors at Boston Celtics (-11.5, N/A)

Spin it any way you want to, but the Boston Celtics just aren’t very good right now.

They have dropped five games in a row both straight up and against the spread and there’s more than enough blame to go around. Paul Pierce was preaching patience in the locker room after Boston dropped a 97-88 decision to Oklahoma City as a 2.5-point favorite Monday.

Problem is, in a 66-game schedule, the Celtics are going to have to get it together pretty soon. Right now they’re sloppy all over the court.

"Our turnovers are killing us,” coach Doc Rivers told reporters after the Thunder turned 19 Boston turnovers into 24 points. “And a lot of the turnovers we're just trying to will the team, do too much. It's not like anybody's being selfish, but the way you win is with execution."

The Celtics shouldn’t be favored by double digits against anybody right now – the rotten Raptors included.

Portland Trail Blazers at Atlanta Hawks (-1.5, 185)

When Atlanta center Al Horford was lost for the year, many people figured the Hawks were done. Josh Smith wasn’t one of those people.

Instead, Smith has put the team on his back, helping the club to six wins in its last seven games. He went off for 28 points and a season-high 15 rebounds as Atlanta downed Toronto 93-84 on Monday.

"I'm not surprised because we have guys in this locker room who can play," Smith said of his team’s strong play without Horford. "We have veteran leadership. We have veteran guys who have been there and done that before. All we need to do is just keep flying under the radar."

Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case at the books. The Hawks have been favored in four of their last five and covered the number just once during that span.

That said, Portland has covered just once in its last four, so we’ll stick with Smith and the home team.

The Sabres have dropped two straight and 11 of their past 14 to fall out of the top eight in the Eastern Conference. Entering Wednesday’s game in Chicago, Buffalo has averaged 1.4 goals in its last 11 losses, topping two tallies only once in that span.

Buffalo bottomed out on Monday in a 5-0 loss at Detroit. Goalie Ryan Miller was pulled in the second period and the Sabres were shut out for the second time in the last four games. Buffalo made big commitments in free agency over the summer, but have dealt with a rash of injuries to go along with breakdowns on the ice.

The Sabres have dropped nine straight on the road and are only two games through a seven-game trip.This could get worse before it gets any better. Chicago has scored 14 goals in the last three games and should give Buffalo everything it can handle.

Phoenix Coyotes at Anaheim Ducks (-130, 5.5)

The Anaheim Ducks are starting to make some noise in the Western Conference, but since they are still 14 points out of playoff position, no one can hear them yet.

The Ducks have won five of their last six games – including a 2-0-1 road trip – and hope to continue their climb when they host the Phoenix Coyotes on Wednesday. The Coyotes are two points out of the No. 8 playoff spot in the Western Conference and their schedule is about to become dominated with home games.

After Anaheim, Phoenix plays nine of its next 11 and 21 of its last 35 at home. The Coyotes snapped a three-game losing streak with a 6-1 victory over Colorado on Monday, which marked a season high for goals.

The Ducks won 4-2 at Vancouver on Sunday, and have outscored opponents 25-11 in their last six games.

The price is a little steep, but you have to ride the Ducks right now.
