Baylor, Syracuse And Murray State Put Unbeaten Marks On Line

All too often, college basketball betting fans are suckered into betting on ranked teams that are laying oodles of points in conference games. Thus far this season, this really hasn’t been the case, as many of the top teams in the land have fantastic ATS marks, and a number of those teams are going to be in action on Saturday in yet another jam-packed weekend slate.

We’ll start with the No. 1 team in the land, the Syracuse Orange. The Big East is once again the most brutal conference in the country to play in, and even though there are a number of teams that are going to be considered Final Four contenders this season once again, the Orange are clearly the cream of the crop.

Despite all of the off-court issues with Bernie Fine, ‘Cuse continue to roll with a perfect 18-0 record. Not only that, but the Orange are 12-5 against the spread. On Saturday, they host the Providence Friars in a game in which they are going to be double-digit favorites. The tip time is set for 6:00 p.m. (ET), and there will be televised coverage on ESPN3.

The Michigan State Spartans started off the year in bad shape, but since beginning with two losses both SU and ATS, they have rolled to a perfect 15-0 SU mark to go with a 10-2 ATS record. They haven’t hit the toughest games on their schedule as of yet, but this weekend’s test in Evanston is going to be tough.

The Northwestern Wildcats have lost by a point to the Illinois Fighting Illini and by two in overtime to the Michigan Wolverines in their last two games, and they are going to hope to get into the win column Saturday afternoon against Sparty in a 3:00 (ET) tip.

In the Big 12, the teams at the top are really playing well. The Baylor Bears, Kansas Jayhawks and Missouri Tigers are a whopping 21-14 ATS between them this year, and are all going to have a shot to improve upon that on Saturday against some poor ATS teams in the conference.

Baylor takes on the 7-7 ATS Oklahoma State Cowboys in a three o'clock (ET) tip on ESPN2, a game which follows Missouri’s home date with the 3-8 ATS Texas Longhorns. The Jayhawks have a difficult test against the Iowa State Cyclones, who are 6-6 ATS on the campaign and have already proven that they can beat some of the best teams in the land.

The Mountain West Conference finally tips league play on Saturday, and things get underway with a huge contest between ranked clubs as San Diego State hosts UNLV. The Rebels enter the game ranked No. 12 in both polls and will bring a 7-game win streak into Viejas Arena. No. 22 San Diego State is also on a 7-game run in the win column, but the last three have come against the likes of Redlands, San Diego Christian and Chicago State, so there could be some early-game shock for the Aztecs as they adjust to the UNLV's fast-paced tempo.

Mid-majors are going to be in action in a big way on Saturday as well. The Murray State Racers are 17-0 and up to the No. 14 slot in the country. They are also 8-4-1 ATS, and really might not be challenged for quite some time. The Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles will provide the opposition on Saturday, and arrive at Murray Statet with the second-most wins in the Ohio Valley Conference standings. You can catch this one Saturday night on ESPNU at 6:00 (ET).

Just after the Racers are finished, the Gonzaga Bulldogs will look to get back on track. They were crushed by the St. Mary’s Gaels on Thursday night, and hope to get in the win column when they engage in this 8:00 (ET) tip against the Loyola Marymount Lions.

The other Top 10 teams that are in action on Saturday are the Kentucky Wildcats at the Tennessee Volunteers and the North Carolina Tar Heels at the Florida State Seminoles. Both games can be seen on ESPN, with UK tipping at noon and UNC starting at 2:00 (ET).

Battle Los Angeles: Clippers And Lakers Meet Saturday

The first battle of Los Angeles will take place on Saturday night at the Staples Center when the Clippers host the Lakers in one of three regular-season meetings between the teams. The highly-anticipated matchup between the team that actually completed a trade for All-Star point guard Chris Paul and the one who could not get a deal approved by the NBA caps a heavy schedule of 11 games at 10:30 p.m. (ET).

The Clippers were the team that won the Paul sweepstakes on December 14, giving up shooting guard Eric Gordon, center Chris Kaman, small forward Al-Farouq Aminu and their unprotected 2012 first-round draft pick to the league-owned New Orleans Hornets. Just days earlier, the NBA had refused a bid by the Lakers to acquire Paul in a proposed three-team trade that reportedly involved sending forward Lamar Odom to New Orleans and forward Pau Gasol to the Houston Rockets. After the deal fell through, Odom was traded to the Dallas Mavericks.

The Clippers swept two preseason meetings with the Lakers and are coming off a huge 95-89 overtime win over the Miami Heat on Wednesday. They have won four of five and will have a rare two days off in between games while the Lakers will be ending a tough stretch of four games in five nights after head coach Mike Brown hosts his former team the Cleveland Cavaliers for the first time on Friday.

The Lakers have won three of the last four regular-season meetings with the Clippers, who have covered the spread in eight of the past 10.

Earlier in the day, a couple of Eastern Conference contenders could be playing without their star players. The New York Knicks lost forward Carmelo Anthony who sprained his right ankle in the third quarter of a 94-83 road loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday. Anthony has said he does not want to force his return and would see how he feels after X-rays were negative.

The Knicks visit the Oklahoma City Thunder at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday before hosting the Orlando Magic on Monday.

The Chicago Bulls may also choose to rest reigning MVP Derrick Rose against the Toronto Raptors following a return home from Friday’s road game against the Boston Celtics. Rose was listed as a game-time decision for the matchup with the Celtics after sitting out Wednesday’s 78-64 victory against the Washington Wizards with a turf toe injury. Saturday’s game against the Raptors is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.

The Bulls became the second team to sweep three games played on back-to-back-to-back nights and saw John Lucas III start in Rose’s place against the Wizards, finishing with a game-high 25 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. The team also signed journeyman Mike James to add some depth at point guard with backup C.J. Watson also out with a sprained left elbow.

In other injury news, the Atlanta Hawks and Golden State Warriors found out they will be without their centers for at least three months. Atlanta’s Al Horford and Golden State’s Kwame Brown both suffered similar injuries, with each tearing pectoral muscles in their chest that require surgery.

The Hawks host the Minnesota Timberwolves at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday while the Warriors visit the Charlotte Bobcats at the same time.

Chicago Blackhawks Face Red Wings And Sharks

The Chicago Blackhawks (26-13-5) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over last-place Columbus Tuesday, and topped the reeling Minnesota Wild with the same score Thursday. Are the Blackhawks back on track, or were they just beneficiaries of a few soft games at home this week?

Bettors will find out this weekend as Chicago has back-to-back games against elite Western Conference teams this weekend.

On Saturday, Chicago heads to Detroit to take on the Red Wings (27-15-1) in a very important divisional matchup. This will be the third of six meetings between the two rivals this season, and with both teams battling for position atop the Central Division with the St. Louis Blues, points in head-to-head games are critical.

The series is split one to one so far this year as Chicago won 3-2 as a -115 favorite at home on December 30 and lost 3-2 in overtime at home on January 8 as a -122 favorite.

Both teams are in the top five in the NHL in scoring averaging 3.2 goals per game each, so don’t be surprised if the offense ramps up in this series over the next four games. Saturday’s game starts at 12:30 p.m. (ET) and will be televised nationally on NBC.

Sunday, the Blackhawks return home to host the San Jose Sharks (24-11-5). Though San Jose currently trails Vancouver, Chicago, St. Louis and Detroit in points, the Sharks have at least three games in hand on all of those teams. Special teams is always essential in today’s NHL, but it will be particularly important in Sunday’s matchup; the penalty kill has been an Achilles heel for both of these teams as Chicago ranks 26th at 79 percent and San Jose ranks 28th at 76.9 percent%. The team that takes less penalties will likely come out on top.

The puck drops at 7:00 p.m. (ET) Sunday, and both WGN and CSNC will carry the game.

Moving over to the Eastern Conference, the first-place New York Rangers visit the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday in what could be a very good game. New York saw a five-game winning streak halted on Thursday, but the Rangers are still 10-2 in their last 12 games and 24-7-1 over their last 32.

After an awful month of December in which Toronto went 4-6-3, the Maple Leafs have stormed out of the gate in 2012 with four straight wins. Jonas Gustavsson has two shutouts and a 1.50 GAA in that stretch. Saturday’s game starts at 7:00 p.m. (ET) and will be televised nationally on NHL Network.

Something has to give Sunday when the Pittsburgh Penguins (21-17-4) head to Tampa Bay to take on the Lightning (17-21-4). These are the two coldest teams in hockey as Pittsburgh has lost six straight and Tampa Bay has lost five straight. Pittsburgh has mustered up just six goals total over the six-game slump. Thanks to the shootout, there are no longer ties; one of these teams has to come out on top. Sunday’s game starts at 1:00 p.m. (ET).
