NHL: Vancouver has won seven of its last eight games against Eastern Conference teams.

NHL: The New York Rangers have won 23 of their last 30 overall.

NCAAB: South Carolina is covered the number in four straight.

NCAAB: Seton Hall has covered the number in six of its last seven.

    Who’s not

NBA: Utah is 6-14 against the spread in its last 20 home games.

NBA: San Antonio is just 1-10 against the spread in its last 11 road games.

NHL: Montreal has won three of its last 10.

NHL: Minnesota is 1-11 in its last 12 overall and 5-16 in its last 21 meetings with San Jose.

NCAAB: Providence is 6-13 against the spread in its last 19 games overall.

NCAAB: Georgia is 3-8 against the spread in the last 11 meetings with Florida.

    Key stat

280 - The Georgia Bulldogs rank 280th in the nation in scoring offense, putting up just 62.9 points per game. They are set as 16-point underdogs against the Florida Gators, who sit sixth in the country averaging 83.6 points per game.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Patrick Sharp, Chicago Blackhawks - Sharp will be sidelined for three to four weeks with an upper body injury. Sharp netted his 20th goal of the season early in the first period on Sunday against the Central Division rival Detroit Red Wings, but left the contest shortly thereafter. Sharp, who has 20 assists in 42 games this campaign, recorded 34 goals and 37 assists for a career-high 71 points last season. The Blackhawks are at home to Columbus Tuesday evening.

    Game of the day

Baylor Bears at Kansas State Wildcats (-2, 131.5)

    Notable quotable

"We gonna win ... we gonna win. We know what's at stake, and we know it's one and done. We aren't going to let that happen. We are going to go out there and give all our effort and we are going to walk away with a win." - New York Giants defensive end Jean Pierre-Paul on this weekend's matchup with the Green Bay Packers. The Giants are set as 8.5-point underdogs at Lambeau Field.

    Notes and tips

Dwight Howard isn’t backing down from his trade request, but doesn’t expect to leave the Orlando Magic anytime soon, if at all. “I don’t think they are going to do anything right now because we’re winning,” Howard told reporters Monday. “Even if this is the last season, let’s go out hard, regardless.” The NBA trade deadline is set for March 15 this season.

Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand has been suspended five games by the NHL for his clip on Sami Salo of the Vancouver Canucks during Saturday's game. Marchand received a major penalty for clipping and a game misconduct at 18:47 of the second period during a testy rematch of last year's Stanley Cup finals. Marchand, who drew a two-game suspension earlier in the season, will be eligible to return Jan. 19 against New Jersey. The 23-year-old Marchand has 16 goals and 16 assists on the campaign for the first-place Bruins.

The Columbus Blue Jackets fired coach Scott Arniel Monday morning and replaced him with assistant coach Todd Richards. Columbus, which has is just 14-49 in its last 63 games overall, sits last overall in the NHL with 27 points.

      Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Steeler-Bronco game Sunday did highest Wild Card rating since 1988, oddly enough a Seahawk-Oiler game. Tebow is TV gold.

-- So we'll see Denver on primetime TV five times in 2012.

-- Seton Hall is ranked for the first time since 2001.

-- You can get 175-1 odds on a Giant-Bronco Super Bowl, highest of any of the possible Super Bowl combinations.

-- Falcons' defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder left Atlanta to be the defensive coordinator at Auburn. Interesting career move.

-- Why would a national championship bowl game with two SEC teams not have SEC officials?

      *******************

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...........

      13) Seven NHL coaches have already been fired this season, which is only half-old; that’s 23% of the league’s coaches.

      12) Milwaukee Bucks won their only NBA championship because they won a coin flip with the Phoenix Suns for the draft pick that became Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar); they haven’t won much against Suns since. Bucks are now 0-24 in their last 24 visits to the Valley of the Sun.

      11) Mets are bringing in the fences at CitiField for 2012, but will it help Jason Bay? Bay hasn’t hit a HR to rightfield since June 28, 2010, he’s in his 30’s, and there are those who believe he’s pretty much finished as a star player, except when it comes to cashing big paychecks.

      10) Dallas Mavericks went to the White House Monday; all of them except for Delonte West, who ironically enough grew up near the White House. West didn’t pass the Secret Service’s background check, due to his numerous run-ins with the law.

      9) Home teams went 4-0 in NFL this weekend, after being 13-15 in this round the previous four years, and 34-10 the 11 years before that.

      8) Broncos—Ran for 251 yards against Patriots in Week 15’s 41-23 home loss, but lost three fumbles and had 24-yard disadvantage in starting field position. Still, running for 251 yards is an awful lot.

      7) Texans—Lost 29-14 (+7.5) at Baltimore with Schaub at QB in Week 6, despite +2 turnover margin; Texans started nine of 12 drives 80+ yards from end zone. Winning in Baltimore with rookie Yates under center is going to be tall order.

      6) Giants—Won at Lambeau in NFC title game four years ago; total yardage was 449-447 Packers in Green Bay’s 38-35 Week 13 win at Swamp Stadium.

      5) 49ers—My notebook with spreads from this round goes back ten years; no home underdogs in this round during that time. Over last decade, home favorites of 3 or less points in this round are 3-5-1 vs spread.

      4) Saints—Offense isn’t same well-oiled machine outdoors, but unless 49ers (+25 in turnovers) win turnover battle, can’t see them beating New Orleans here.

      3) Ravens—Teams fight so hard to get bye and home field in this round, but over last eight years, home side is 18-14 SU, 14-18 vs spread in this round, where you think teams with bye would have a big advantage.

      2) Patriots—This is 6th time Belichick has had 1st-round bye in playoffs; he was 4-1 in this round other five years, 0-3 vs spread as #1 seed, 1-0-1 vs spread as #2 seed. Loss came LY to Jets.

      1) Packers—Been six years since defending Super Bowl champ won a playoff game (0-4 since last win); last team to repeat was ’03-’04 Pats.

NFL divisional playoffs odds: Opening line report

We talked to sportsbook oddsmakers to get their thinking behind opening lines for the NFL divisional playoffs.

No. 3 New Orleans Saints at No. 2 San Francisco 49ers, 4:30 p.m. Saturday

Wynn Las Vegas opening line: Saints -3 (-120), 46.5

BetOnline.com line as of late Sunday: Saints -3.5, 47

Wynn sportsbook manager John Avello expects another flood of Saints money.

"We were thinking 3 and then we went to -3 (-120) after Saturday's performance," Avello told *********** after the Saints broke the postseason record with 626 total yards in their 45-28 thrashing of Detroit. "I don't know how we keep bettors off this team right now. I bet you I'll be at 3.5 pretty soon.

"The public loves the Saints, they see this offense and they just think they can score at will," he continued. "They're going to overlook the Niners because that team hasn't been in the playoffs in a while. They're the No. 2 seed, but in reality everybody believes the Saints are the No. 2 seed. I just think we're going to need San Fran. But we'll see how it turns out."

New Orleans has won and covered nine straight. With Drew Brees breaking records on a weekly basis, the Saints have averaged 44.3 points over their last four games.

Lions-Saints just soared over a record total for an NFL playoff game. Still, Avello said he opened Saints-Niners at 46.5 for two reasons: San Fran's No. 2-ranked defense (14.3 points allowed per game) and the style the Niners must play.

"San Fran cannot get into a shootout," he said.

No. 4 Denver Broncos at No. 1 New England Patriots, 8 p.m. ET Saturday

Las Vegas Hilton SuperBook opening line: Patriots -13.5, 50.5

BetOnline.com line as of laste Sunday: Patriots -13.5 (-120), 51

Some books already moved to 14.

Jay Kornegay, director of the Las Vegas Hilton SuperBook, expects to follow suit.

“Looks like the money is going to push it to 14, but the question is where does it go from that point?” he told ***********.

Kornegay gave Denver its props, especially for its play-action passes, but noted the Broncos faced a depleted version of the Steelers on Sunday.

“It was a great win, but I’m not really sold on the Denver Broncos making a run to the Super Bowl,” he said.

When New England visited Denver on Dec. 18, the Pats rallied from a 16-7 deficit to win 41-23, covering as 7-point favorites. The game sailed over the 47.5 total.

Tom Brady threw for 320 yards and two TDs, and tight ends Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski combined for 13 catches and 182 yards.

No. 3 Houston Texans at No. 2 Baltimore Ravens, 1 p.m. Sunday

Caesars Palace opening line: Ravens -7.5, 38.5

Wynn Las Vegas opening line: Ravens -7, 38.5

BetOnline.com line as of late Sunday: Ravens -9 (+115), 37.5

Oddsmakers didn't overreact to Houston's 31-10 wild card win over Cincinnati.

"I'm still not sold on the Texans," Todd Fuhrman, senior race and sports analyst for Caesars Entertainment, told ***********. "The game wasn't nearly as lopsided as the final score indicated."

He opened Texans-Ravens at 7.5 because "the Ravens coming off a bye is worth at least one full point, and I think the hook will give us better balance than opening at just a TD."

Offshore books that opened the game at 7 quickly moved higher as Baltimore money poured in.

Avello also wasn't swayed by the Texans' first-ever playoff win.

“Arian Foster looked pretty good, that’s for sure,” he said. “But the Texans played at Baltimore in the middle of the season, the line was 7 and they lost by a couple touchdowns. It’s going to be tough for the Texans, and for T.J. Yates. He’ll find the going much more difficult.”

Avello based his opening line primarily on power ratings.

“I really don’t vary much by going with a lot of opinion at this point,” he said. “Our ratings say 7. The total has got to be on the low side. You can’t think there’s going to be a whole lot of scoring, not with the way the Ravens play at home. I think we’re where we need to be.”

        It’s a matchup of Top-5 defenses. Baltimore allows 16.6 points per game (3rd), Houston 17.4 (4th).

When the teams met in Week 6 in Baltimore, Houston led 14-13 in the third quarter. But the Ravens dominated from that point, winning 29-14 as 7-point favorites. The score fell a half-point shy of the 43.5 total.

Joe Flacco threw for 305 yards, Ray Rice ran for 101 and Baltimore held Houston’s vaunted ground game to 3.7 yards per carry.

Matt Schaub quarterbacked the Texans that day. This time it will be the rookie Yates facing Terrell Suggs, Haloti Ngata, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed and company.

Yates played efficiently on Saturday, going 11 of 20 for 159 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. He did throw one ill-advised pass Chris Crocker should have picked off.

Foster, who ran for 153 yards Saturday, was held to 49 yards on 15 carries in the Oct. 16 loss in Baltimore.

No. 4 New York Giants at No. 1 Green Bay Packers, 4:30 p.m. ET Sunday

Las Vegas Hilton SuperBook opening line: Packers -9, 51.5

BetOnline.com line as of late Sunday: Packers -9 (-105), 51.5

Offshores that opened anywhere but 9 quickly fell into line.

At first glance this seems like a big number. The Giants dismantled Atlanta on Sunday, their defense not allowing a point. And New York nearly upset Green Bay in Week 13.

But oddsmakers aren’t buying that it’s 2007 all over again.

“The Packers are going to be a little more creative than the Falcons,” Kornegay told ***********. “The Giants played well but I’m not going to get too excited about them because they haven’t put a string of good games together all year.

“Green Bay still remembers what happened a few years back [losing the NFC championship game 23-20 at home to New York],” he continued. “The Falcons were very conservative and didn’t make the right adjustments. We know the Packers are better coached than that.”

Kornegay said a total of 51 would “be on the short side and we’ll probably stay on the high side throughout the week, unless weather comes into play.”

In Week 13, these teams played a thriller at MetLife Stadium. Green Bay won 38-35, failing to cover as a 7-point favorite. The game went over the 53.5 total by nearly 20 points.

They combined for 53 first downs and nearly 900 yards of offense.

Although it was their fourth straight loss, the Giants took heart from pushing the then-undefeated Super Bowl champs to the limit.

NFL odds: Divisional playoff betting trends
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After expanding its playoff format to 12 teams in 1990, the NFL left the door wide open to the possibilities of a Wild Card team running the table and hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.

And while a wild card team has done so only seven times in Super Bowl history, five such winners have been crowned since 1997.

Last year witnessed the Packers hauling home the hardware. In 2007 it was the New York Giants, in 2005 the Pittsburgh Steelers, in 2000 the Baltimore Ravens and in 1997 the Denver Broncos.

Will the trend continue this season or will the top seeded teams have their say? With both of the No.1 seeds owning the league’s worst defenses, a strong case might be made for New Orleans to continue its hot streak. Before we crown anyone just yet, let’s first check a few Divisional Round angles in the NFL playoffs that are noteworthy. All results are since 1990 and are against the spread (ATS), unless noted otherwise.

Top seeds generally up to speed

No. 1 seeds enjoy the luxury of not only hosting a game in this round but also play with an added week of rest.

For the most part these teams have had major success, going 31-11 SU and 23-19 ATS in this role.

The best the NFC has to offer has gone 19-2 SU and 15-6 ATS, including 10-0 SU and 9-1 ATS versus a foe off a spread win of more than 13 points in its wild card game.

Top seeds from the AFC have struggled, going 12-9 SU and 8-13 ATS, including 5-5 SU and 1-9 ATS when playing off back-to-back wins.

        Success breeds success

Rested hosts in this round that enjoyed success last season use that experience to their advantage.

Teams that won 11 or more games last year are 38-9 SU and 29-17-1 ATS at home with a week to prepare in Division Round contests

On the flip side, teams that were losing teams last years (seven or fewer wins) are just 7-34 SU and 15-24-1 ATS in this round.

Put one up against the other – an 11-plus win home team against a losing team last year – and these hosts respond with aplomb, going an eye-opening 16-0 SU and 12-3-1 ATS.

        Highway blues

Life on the road for wild card teams who won at home has been rocky, especially if they grabbed the cash as well.

These highwaymen are just 15-36 SU and 20-29-1 ATS in this role against well-rested higher-seeded foes.

And if these same wild card winners take to the road off one win, they dip to a disgusting 0-15 SU and 1-13-1 ATS in these affairs.

There you have it. A trio of time-tested theories to help guide you through the NFL Divisional Round games this week. Do the math, figure them out and play accordingly.

Baylor Bears at Kansas State Wildcats (-2)

Kansas State had no trouble disposing of unbeaten Missouri 75-59 on Saturday. Now, the No. 18 Wildcats will try to take down yet another unbeaten when No. 4 Baylor visits.

The Bears, who are coming off a 73-60 victory over Texas Tech, are off to the best start in school history. Baylor has won 12 of its games by double figures, but has also had a knack for pulling out the close ones, winning three games by three or less.

It is always somebody different for Baylor, which shook off a sluggish start to defeat the Red Raiders. This time it was Pierre Jackson, who had a team-high 19 points - including eight in a five-minute stretch to open the second half - as the Bears extended their winning streak to a school-record 15 games. Baylor is one of only three Big 12 teams to open conference play 2-0 along with Iowa State and Kansas.

The Bears' depth will keep them in this tough road game until the end.

                  Pick: Bears

Ohio State Buckeyes at Illinois Fighting Illini (9.5)

The Fighting Illini have opened their conference schedule with some bottom-tier teams but have a chance to make a statement not only in the Big Ten but also for the NCAA Tournament selection committee in March.

But if the Illini are going to shock the Buckeyes they’ll need 7-footer Meyers Leonard to stay out of foul trouble against one of the nation’s premier big men. Jared Sullinger is finally starting to get healthy after dealing with a nagging back injury. He scored 28 points to lift Ohio State past Iowa this weekend. Sullinger was right at home in Illinois last season, scoring 27 points and grabbing 16 rebounds in a 73-68 victory for the Buckeyes.

The Buckeyes live and die through Sullinger. Their two losses came to Kansas, when Sullinger was out with back spasms, and to Indiana, when he played limited minutes because of foul trouble. With the bruising forward under the basket, Ohio State packs the opponent's defense in the key, freeing up perimeter shooters.

Even if Leonard can hang with Sullinger down low, the Illini are banged up in the backcourt with Sam Maniscalco and D.J. Richardson ailing. Those injuries could be the difference.

                  Pick: Buckeyes

Ice picks: Tuesday's best NHL bets
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Winnipeg Jets at Boston Bruins (-255, 5.5)

The Boston Bruins find themselves in an unfamiliar position – attempting to rebound from a loss – as they prepare to host the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday night.

Boston tasted defeat for only the fifth time in its last 28 games (23-4-1) on Saturday, dropping a 4-3 home decision to the Vancouver Canucks in a testy rematch of their seven-game Stanley Cup Finals series. The Bruins should have little trouble regaining an emotional edge for the Jets, who snapped Boston's 15-game points streak with a 2-1 victory in Manitoba on Dec. 6.

Boston surrendered four power-play goals to the Canucks in losing for the second time in nine games. Two of those came after Brad Marchand received a five-minute major and game misconduct for clipping Vancouver defenseman Sami Salo along the boards.

Marchand’s punishment didn’t end there. He received a five-game suspension from NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan following two days of snipping between Boston and Vancouver officials. Marchand is tied for the team lead in goals (16) and is third overall in points (32).

No value in a B's wager, but both of these teams get a lot of pucks to the net.

                            Pick: Over

Nashville Predators at Colorado Avalanche (-120, 5.5)

Playoff positioning will be top of mind when the Nashville Predators visit the Colorado Avalanche. The two Western Conference teams are separated by a single point and are in a cluster of clubs within a few points of each other.

This is the first of four meetings between the two teams this season, and the opening of a home-and-home series. The second game is Thursday in Music City. Nashville is 10-8-1 on the road this season, while Colorado sports a healthy 13-10-0 home record.

Nashville is coming off a 5-2 home win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday. Patric Hornqvist scored two power-play goals to lead the offense. Captain Shea Weber, Craig Smith and rookie Ryan Ellis also scored in the win.

For Ellis, his first NHL goal followed his first NHL point on Saturday. Mike Fisher contributed three assists. After going 0-for-16 on the power play over a five-game stretch, the Predators were 4-for-5 with the man-advantage against the Hurricanes.

Nashville has the system to contain Colorado's speed.

                            Pick: Predators

Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL bets
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

                              HOT TEAM: New York Rangers

The big-bucks, big-news signing of Brad Richards this summer reminded many of the old days in New York, where marquee free agents would land with the Rangers, collect a huge payday and play out their days in the NHL without leading the team very far in the postseason, if they made the postseason at all.

But it seems these are not your normal Rangers. And Richards is not like the Pavel Bures, and the Scott Gomezes, and the Chris Drurys before him. Heading into Tuesday’s game vs. the Coyotes, Richards has 15 goals and 31 points, and the Rangers are unbeaten (3-0) in 2012.

It goes well beyond a week, though. New York has also won nine of its last 10 games, and has kept a good distance between itself and Philadelphia in the Atlantic Division. People are being reminded of 1994, when the Rangers rolled four solid lines to the Stanley Cup.

There’s a long way to go this season, but clearly they have the talent. And with the Flyers and Penguins short-handed, there is a prime opportunity to run away with the division and even capture the East’s No. 1 seed.

                              COLD TEAM: Edmonton Oilers

Edmonton hardly closed the calendar year with a bang, losing three straight to end December. And things have not gotten all that better in 2012. A surprising 4-3 win over Chicago on Jan. 2 was quickly lost in another three-game losing streak, including defeats at Buffalo, St. Louis and Dallas.

On Saturday, the Oilers fell to those Stars, 4-1, and closed a season-long seven game road trip at 1-6. But that might be the least of their problems. Forward Jordan Eberle, who is the team's leading scorer with 17 goals and 43 points, suffered a knee injury in the first period. He did not return, and finished with just three shifts and 1:53 time on the ice. Edmonton will be in deep do-do if Eberle joins Ryan Nugent-Hopkins on the injured reserve.

If there is a silver lining, it's that the Oilers do have a bit of time to regroup. They don't play again until Wednesday, when they play host to the Devils in Edmonton.

                              OVER PLAY: Boston Bruins

Tough to believe that a team which has Tim Thomas in net is a solid over play, but you cannot go wrong with the surging Bruins these days. While the talk in the Eastern Conference is about the rolling Rangers, the defending Stanley Cup champions just keep on cruising. And along the way, they have developed a nice little trend in the totals world.

While goaltenders Thomas and Tuukka Rask are still doing their thing admirably, the Bruins offense, perhaps the deepest in the conference, is hammering teams of late, and cashing overs at a decent clip.

Saturday’s 4-3 loss to Vancouver in Boston, just the Bruins’ second defeat in the last 10 games, was their fourth straight over and their fifth in the last six games. And most of these overs have been cakewalks, too. Consider that in a two-game stretch last week, Boston scored 15 goals, and posted a 6-1 win over New Jersey and a 9-0 win over Calgary.

As with all teams, overs and unders are cyclical and come and go. But clearly, the Bruins have the personnel to maintain this surge moving forward. Keep them handy.

                              UNDER PLAY: St. Louis Blues

Hard to believe, but a coach who began the season unemployed is probably the leader in the clubhouse for the Jack Adams Trophy. Ken Hitchcock, summoned to save the Blues after a dismal start, quickly has installed a will to win and a defensive mindset that has truly gripped this team.

St. Louis defeated Colorado in classic Hitchcock style on Saturday, 4-0, and ended the night in first place in the Central Division, one point ahead of Chicago and two in front of Detroit. Along the way, the Blues have become quite the under play. In fact, that win versus the Avalanche pushed a streak to six games in which they've gone 4-1-1 under, and in the last nine games, they are 4-2-3.

Against Colorado, they made it look easy. Goaltender Brian Elliott made just 15 saves en route to his fifth shutout. They will look to keep it going on Tuesday at Montreal.

                              SURVEYING THE SCHEDULE:

** The Devils have surprised their critics by staying alive in the Eastern Conference playoff race, but this week will be a test a long way from home. Starting Tuesday, the Devils will embark on three games in five days, all away from New Jersey. They will play at Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg in that stretch, and won't again play at home until Jan. 17.

** The Canucks opened a four-game road swing with a bang, defeating Boston, 4-3, in the Stanley Cup Finals rematch. But things won't get any easier for Vancouver. On Monday, they will begin a stretch of three games in four days to end the trip, including stops at Florida, Tampa Bay and St. Louis.
