Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

The status of two Falcons’ defensive starters is in doubt for Sunday’s playoff game at the Giants. Coach Mike Smith said linebacker Stephen Nicholas (toe) is doubtful, while corner Brent Grimes (knee) insists he’ll play despite missing practice until Friday, when he turned in a limited practice. Grimes is listed as questionable.

Notes and tips

Heavy action on Houston in the first NFL wild card game has pushed the line to Texans -3.5 or Texans -4. At the Las Vegas Hilton SuperBook, for example, the line opened at Texans -3 (100). After upping the juice all week, the book moved the line to 3.5 and then 4 late Friday. Covers Consensus bettors are almost evenly split on the matchup. Bengals QB Andy Dalton, who was ill this week, is listed as probable after practicing in full on Friday.

Arizona State will again only have six scholarship players for its game at UCLA on Saturday. Starters Keala King and Kyle Cain and reserve Chris Colvin were suspended for “unacceptable conduct” and did not make the trip to Los Angeles. But playing shorthanded vs. USC on Thursday, the Sun Devils won 62-53. They used just seven players, with four starters playing at least 33 minutes. King averages a team-best 13.7 points, Crain 8.5.

Only one player, safety Chris Harris, missed the final Lions’ practice before Saturday’s playoff game in New Orleans. "I think that we're as healthy as we've been for six or seven weeks," said head coach Jim Schwartz. "I think that, like we said before, we expect to have everybody back at some point in the season. Well, we're at 'some point of the season,' so it's good to get a lot of guys back and we'll see Saturday who the best 46 (actives are) for that game."

Sacramento Kings big man Chuck Hayes has dislocated his left shoulder and will be out indefinitely. Hayes extended his left arm and fouled Milwaukee center Drew Gooden in Thursday’s 103-100 Kings win, the first game under new coach Keith Smart. Hayes’ arm seemed to get tangled with Gooden and his shoulder popped out. According to NBA.com, “Hayes lay on the floor writhing in pain for a few minutes, the arena falling so silent that his screams could be heard from the sideline. He walked off under his own power holding his arm.”

13) ACC teams are 2-13 in BCS bowl games; they expanded the league with football riches in mind, but at same time hurt the league's basketball, its traditional strong suit. Someone has some 'splainin' to do........

12) Back in September I made a sarcastic joke in this space to effect that we’ll know when college conference realignment is done, when Cal-Santa Barbara joins America East. Eight weeks later, San Diego State joined the Big East (just for football). Real life is stranger than fiction.

11) Jerry Jones is a better owner than a general manager. Much better. His worst fault as an owner is that he won’t fire the GM.

10) Most underrated place in Las Vegas to watch Saturday/Sunday football is the sports book at SouthPoint casino; seats were available all weekend, there are 75 cent hot dogs very close to the betting windows and there are a lot of big screens. Enjoyed it a lot.

9) Mike Martz doesn’t get along well with others. None of this mattered until Jay Cutler got hurt, but he’s now coached in five different places since 1998, all in the NFC, by the way.

8) Best way to impress your girlfriend or wife? Buy her a Lexus for Christmas. Commercials say it works like a charm.

7) Apparently, Urban Meyer’s family would rather he go back to work coaching and earn millions, rather than spend more time with them.

6) Addition by subtraction, 2011 edition: Chad85Johnson left Cincinnati, and the Bengals made the playoffs. Go figure.

5) Apparently, the Chiefs’ players like Romeo Crennel a lot better than they liked Todd Haley, which is why Haley is currently unemployed.

4) This isn’t football-related, but there are people in this world who are basically dishonest, which is both disappointing and educational.

3) Very delicate situation playing out in Indianapolis, where the star QB is nearing the end of a brilliant career; when do the Colts draft his replacement? This season showed graphically that the team, as it is built now, is useless without him, which isn’t the way teams are supposed to be built. At some point, they have to move on to the future, but when?

2) NFL Sunday ticket isn’t as much fun when your favorite team is 2-14.

1) BCS has ruined New Year’s Day, and bowls in general; they stretch the games out over such a long period of time you forget there are still games going on. Northern Illinois-Arkansas State? It seems ridiculous, but its lot better than the Illinois-UCLA game, where both teams had already fired its coach and neither team had a winning record going in. Not good.

NFL poolies cheat sheet: Wildcard Weekend

Cincinnati Bengals at Houston Texans (-3)

Why Bengals cover: The Texans are laying the customary three points for being at home, but oddsmakers are giving them no more of an edge than that. That’s because T.J. Yates – Houston’s third-string QB – is starting due to injuries suffered by Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart during the season. And even Yates is dinged up, recovering from a separated left (non-throwing) shoulder.

Cincy, meanwhile, is battle tested in the hotly contested AFC North. The Bengals lost five of their last eight games, but four of those were to Pittsburgh and Baltimore and the fifth was at home to these same Texans - a 20-19 setback on a last-second Houston touchdown. Marvin Lewis’ troops are a solid 6-1-2 against the spread (ATS) in their last nine on the road and they are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 catching three points or less. Cincy also has the NFL’s ninth-ranked scoring defense (20.2 ppg) and eighth-ranked yardage defense (316.3 ypg).

Why Texans cover: It never hurts to have Arian Foster (1,224 yards, 4.4 ypc, 10 TDs) toting the ball for you – or catching the ball (53 receptions, 617 yards). And he’s rested, sitting out last week after ripping off 158 yards two weeks ago against the Colts. Wideout Andre Johnson, hit-and-miss all season with hamstring issues, is also expected to play a lot Saturday.

Houston has a solid defense, at fourth in scoring (17.4 ppg) and second in yards allowed (285.7). Houston is also on several ATS upswings, including 6-2-2 overall, 7-3-1 as a home chalk and 4-0 in this occasional rivalry, winning the last three meetings straight up (SU).

Total (38.5): The bookmakers are expecting both teams’ defenses to keep things reasonable. The total has gone under in six of Texans’ last eight at Reliant Field and five of their last six as a home favorite. However, Cincy sports over streaks of 9-4 overall, 10-2 against AFC foes, 4-1 vs. winning teams and 4-1 after a SU loss. Last month’s Texans-Bengals contest seemed a sure under bet until Yates led the game-winning 80-yard TD drive, putting it narrowly over the 37.5-point number.

Detroit Lions at New Orleans Saints (-10.5)

Why Lions cover: This is the playoffs, and that’s a huge number for Saints to lay. Lions QB Matthew Stafford showed last week – and several other times this year – that he’s plenty capable of lighting up the scoreboard, hurling five TD passes while racking up 520 yards, outdoors in lousy weather against the Packers (albeit in a losing cause). Now, he gets to go back indoors with an offense that ranks fourth in the NFL at 29.6 ppg.

Detroit is 16-7-2 ATS in its last 25 catching more than 10 points, while New Orleans is 3-7 ATS in its last 10 giving more than 10 points. Saints also shoulder ATS slides of 2-7 in January games, 2-5 in postseason play and 1-5 on Saturdays.

Why Saints cover: Drew Brees & Co. are the hottest team in the league entering the playoffs, with an offense that has shattered all sorts of records this season. The Saints rate second in scoring at 34.2 ppg and No. 1 in yards gained at a hefty 467.1 ypg. Matching Detroit’s offensive prowess won’t be a problem. In fact, these two teams met just five weeks ago at the Superdome and New Orleans held up its end of the bargain while stifling Detroit in a 31-17 victory as a 9-point favorite.

Sean Payton’s squad has ripped off eight consecutive wins, cashing in all eight and winning by 11 points or more six times in that stretch. Their last three games have been laughers, with the Saints breaking 40 in all three and winning by a minimum of 22 points. New Orleans is also on an 11-1 ATS tear in its home dome. Detroit, meanwhile, has covered just one of its last six (1-4-1 ATS) and is 0-5-1 ATS in its last six vs. winning teams.

Total (58.5): That is a big total, though it’s clear these two offenses are capable of surpassing it. Detroit on over streaks of 19-9-1 overall, 34-16-1 in roadies and 5-1-1 as a road pup, while New Orleans carries over runs of 6-1-1 in the playoffs, 4-0 in home postseason play and 4-0 with Saints a chalk of more than 10.

Last month’s Lions-Saints clash reached 48 points - a touchdown short of the posted number of 55.

Atlanta Falcons at New York Giants (-3)

Why Falcons cover: This is a team that really played its way into the postseason, winning eight of its last 11 games after a 2-3 start. Atlanta went 3-1 SU and ATS in its final four games, with the three wins coming by eight points, 27 points and 21 points, respectively. The Giants, meanwhile, were 3-5 SU in their last eight and didn’t exactly look like a playoff-worthy team at times.

Atlanta has covered in its last five roadies against the Giants and the road team in this rivalry is on an 8-0 pointspread tear. New York is in ATS ruts of 1-4-1 laying points and 1-4-1 as a home favorite.

Why Giants cover: They got their act together after a four-game dive to win three of their last four SU and ATS, including Sunday night’s 31-14 home victory over Dallas to clinch the final NFC playoff spot. With the exception of an inexplicable loss at Washington, QB Eli Manning has had the offense clicking this past month, racking up 29 points or more four times. And when it gets to crunch time, Manning has produced. He’s got a league-leading 15 fourth-quarter touchdown throws this season.

The Giants have cashed four of their last five overall and five of their last six in the postseason. Falcons have failed to cover in their last four against winning teams, and they are in playoff ATS slides of 1-4 overall and 1-4 as an underdog. Atlanta also 1-5 ATS outdoors this season.

Total (47): Over has been the play in Atlanta’s last four games and is on further runs of 6-1-2 for Falcons in January and 8-3 for Giants against winning teams. However, New York on under surges of 6-1 in playoff games, 4-1 at home and 4-0 giving points. And in this rivalry, the under is 5-1-1 in the last seven meetings.

Pittsburgh Steelers (-9) at Denver Broncos

Why Steelers cover: Pittsburgh has the league’s No. 1 defense, allowing just 14.2 ppg and 271.8 ypg, and the Broncos can’t score, even against inferior opponents. Last week, Denver’s defense held a non-descript Kansas City squad to seven points, Denver’s offense got 145 rushing yards from Willis McGahee – and the Donkeys lost 7-3. Pittsburgh is no Kansas City, meaning Tim Tebow doesn’t have a prayer, no matter how many he says.

Pittsburgh, the defending AFC champ, is at its best at this time of year, especially at the books, with ATS streaks of 10-1 in January and 9-2 in the postseason, and it’s cashed six of its last seven as playoff chalk. Denver, conversely, has lost its last three games SU and ATS and is in further ATS ruts of 0-4 overall, 1-4 in the playoffs and 15-35-2 in the Mile High City.

Why Broncos cover: It’s really hard to make a case for a team that mustered just three points against the Chiefs at home last week. The Broncos are lucking out in that Pittsburgh is dinged up. Running back Rashard Mendenhall (knee) is done for the rest of the year, QB Ben Roethlisberger has a gimpy ankle, and S Ryan Clark has to sit out due to a sickle-cell trait that doesn’t handle high altitude well.

Denver has covered in five of its last six from the underdog role and five of its last six home playoff games (though they haven’t been in the playoffs in six years). The Men of Steel have been more like tin on the road lately, at 2-7 ATS in their last nine on the highway and 1-5 ATS in their last six following a SU win.

Total (34): This is quite a low number, but based on Pittsburgh’s stout defense and Denver’s anemic offense, the under is certainly plausible. The total has gone low in six straight for the Steelers. On the flip side, though, the over is 17-4 in Pittsburgh’s last 21 postseason affairs and 10-1 with the Steelers a playoff chalk, and the Broncos sport over streaks of 25-12 overall, 13-5 at home and 14-3 against winning teams.

Over last seven seasons, home teams are 13-15 SU in this round, after being 34-10 from 1993-2003; why has home field advantage become less of an advantage?

Bengals (9-7) @ Texans (10-6)—Battle of rookie QBs in Texans’ first-ever playoff game; Houston (+3) won 20-19 at Cincinnati four weeks ago, rallying back from down 16-3 at half to win with score in final minute- that clinched AFC South for them but they haven’t won since, losing last three games, last two by combined total of four points. Bengals were 3-5 in second half of season, limping into playoffs because Oakland lost in Week 17; they’re 5-3 on road this year, 5-2-1 vs spread, 4-1-1 as road dogs, losing away games by 2 at Denver, 7 at Baltimore, 28 at Heinz Field. Houston is 6-2 vs spread at home this year, losing last two at home after the division was clinched. Favorites are 7-3 vs spread in the AFC 3-6 game the last ten years, with #6 seed winning the last three; average total in this game last five years is 34.0. Cincy split two visits here, with last one in ’08- last playoff game was home loss to Jets in ’09.

Giants just had must-win, emotional play-in wins over rivals the last two weeks after losing five of six games before that, hard to believe they won’t come out flat here against team they’ve beaten in last three meetings, last of which was two years ago. Big Blue scored 29+ points in four of last five games; they’re 3-5-1 as a favorite this year, were just 5-4 SU at home. Atlanta is dome team playing in northeast in January, but Ryan is Philly kid who went to BC, so he should be able to cope. Falcons Over last nine years, underdogs are 8-1 vs spread in NFC’s 4-5 game, with average total of 75.7 in last three; NFC’s #4 seed is 15-3 against the 5-seed the last 18 years, winning the last three. Falcons’ last playoff win was back in ’04; Giants’ last win was their Super Bowl win over New England four years ago.

Steelers (12-4) @ Broncos (8-8)—Over last 13 years, previous year’s Super Bowl loser is 2-5 in playoff games, 0-3 vs spread as favorite. Big Ben’s gimpy ankle makes this game risky business; he hasn’t thrown TD pass in last three games, as Steelers slept-walked to three wins in last four games (two over Browns, one over Rams). Pitt is 5-3 on road, but scored total of 29 points (two TDs, five FGs on 31 drives) in last three games on foreign soil. Denver limps into playoffs with three straight losses and QB who completed 40% of his passes in those games; Broncos are 5-4 as underdog this year, winning four of last five as dog SU- they’re 3-5 at home this year, with three of five losses by 5 or less points. These teams have split six playoff meetings, with four of six surprisingly played here. Steelers lost six of last nine visits here overall, but won 28-10 in last visit two years ago. This is Broncos’ first playoff game in six years. Again, over last nine years, #5 seed is 10-8 vs #4 seed in this round, 5-4 in each conference.

Act like you’ve been there before.

It’s a phrase that is so common in sports that it’s often pushed aside as just another tired cliché. Coaches spend hours shaping their teams to be responsible, committed and focused.

Players have heard it enough that as soon as it comes up, the headphones go on and the iPhones come out.

Most of the time it’s used to promote professionalism. Get into the end zone, give the ball back to the official and move on. Act like you’ve been there before.

But when you consider it in a literal sense, a lot of guys are shaking their heads right now. Playoffs? They know absolutely nothing about playoff football, which any veteran worth his player’s pension will tell you is a completely different animal.

That makes this weekend hell of a lot harder to handicap. There are certain things we hold dear as football bettors, certain situations we feel comfortable evaluating because we’ve seen them so many times before.

Ben Roethlisberger’s ankle is a mess and he missed practice this week, but nobody’s sounding the fire alarm. He’s Big Ben. He always shows up and moves the chains.

But what about the other guys?

Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford threw for a billion yards this year and probably has the most dominant wide receiver the league has seen in years, but how are they going to handle a Saturday night game in New Orleans?

It might as well be Mardi Gras. Who Dat Nation will be running wild with voodoo spells, beads and boobs flying all over the place. Detroit may be playing in a dome, but this will be a road game like no other for these young Lions.

How about the rookie quarterback battle between Cincinnati’s Andy Dalton and Houston’s T.J. Yates? You might as well be shaking the Magic 8 ball for answers and to make matters worse, Dalton has been praying to the porcelain gods all week while Yates is working with an iffy shoulder.

And then, of course, there’s Tim Tebow. Against all odds, he led the Broncos to the playoffs, but his big reward is a date with Pittsburgh’s defense.

With this many question marks and so much inexperience on the field, anybody who tells you they have a lock this weekend needs to be locked up.

I know we’re all excited about playoff football, but NFL bettors need to act like we’ve been here before too.

Cincinnati Bengals at Houston Texans (-3, 39)

While you gotta love Dalton’s moxie, he hasn’t been nearly as effective as he was earlier this year. He completed just 54.8 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions in his last seven games. Houston’s pass defense ranks third in the league, so the Red Rifle has his work cut out for him.

And, in the first meeting between these teams, Yates couldn’t get anything done when the Bengals laid back in coverage and forced the young quarterback to beat them. As long as Cincinnati doesn’t get sucked into too many play-action plays, Yates will have a tough time making big strikes as well.

Detroit Lions at New Orleans Saints (-10.5, 59)

As Larry Hartstein discussed earlier this week, this might be the biggest playoff total the books ever sent out. There aren’t many people looking at the under either.

Even though you know this number is juiced with public opinion, it’s hard to make a case for the under. The Saints are averaging 44 points per game while Detroit has averaged about 35 points per contests over its last four.

Once you factor in the fast track at the Superdome, I think this total is only going to rise before Saturday night.

Atlanta Falcons at New York Giants (-3, 47)

Eli Manning deserves a ton of credit. He’s picking his spots for big plays, fitting the ball into tight holes and basically willed this team into the postseason with last week’s sparkling 346-yard, three-TD effort against Dallas.

When it comes to playoff football, Eli obviously knows what he’s doing.

Meanwhile, Matt Ryan is trying to take his game to the next level and he looks to have all the momentum he needs to do just that. Ryan has chucked 10 touchdowns in his last four games with no interceptions and ended up with more than 4,000 passing yards.

Barring a terrible weather day in the Big Apple, this one tops the total too.

Florida won last four games with Tennessee by 13-6-1-11 points, with 85-74 win in SEC tourney last March; but Gators' win in Knoxville LY was their first there in last six years. 12-3 Florida won seven of its last eight games, but they're 0-3 on road, losing at Ohio St/Syracuse/Rutgers; their last six wins are all by 18+ points. Vols are playing much slower pace under Martin; they're 0-4 vs top 100 teams, losing to Duke by 10, Pitt by 5, and twice to Memphis, by 2-18 points.

Xavier won its last nine games vs Fordham, winning last three visits to Rose Hill Gym by 15-26-26 points, but Musketeers are 1-5 since fight in Cincinnati game, losing road games at Hawai'i/LaSalle- their rating slid from #25 to #56. Improved Fordham won four of last six games, losing by 4-6 points. Underdogs are 4-2 vs spread in this young A-14 season. Rams are still shooting just 27.5% behind arc, 61.6% from line, but they beat #44 Harvard last week, their best win in years.

Dating back to LY, five of Marquette's last eight losses are by 10+ points. Big East home faves are 4-7-1 vs spread.

Temple just beat #10 Duke, has trip to #14 Saint Louis next, but first it has hosts Dayton team they beat last two years by 8-10 points, after it lost previous three games to Flyers. Dayton is on road for first time in five weeks; they're 0-2 on foreign soil, losing at Miami O by 5 in OT, at unbeaten Murray State by 17. Flyers are 3-3 vs top 100 teams, with losses by 29-17-5 points. Temple is 4-2 vs teams in top 100, with two wins in OT. Flyers upset Saint Louis in OT in their last game.

Mississippi State won six of last seven games vs Arkansas, winning two of last three visits here, by 14-10 points; 13-2 Bulldogs won only true road game by 5 at Detroit- they've beaten A&M/Arizona at neutral site, lost by hoop to Baylor in Dallas. Arkansas won last six games, but only one of six foes is in top 200; they've got one senior in top eight players, as they learn to play faster under new coach Anderson. Hogs are 0-2 vs top 100 teams, losing to UConn by 13, Oklahoma by 15. .

Miami won its last three games vs Virginia, beating Cavaliers twice LY, both times in OT, once in ACC tourney, but they've lost three of four at Virginia, losing by 20-11-18 points. 'canes are 0-3 vs top 40 teams, with losses by 7-11-7 points to Memphis at home, and on road to West Va, Purdue- they're 1-3 on road, with only win at Charlotte. Virginia won its last 11 games, holding 10 teams under 60 points, with solid win at LSU Monday; Cavalier opponents are shooting just 26.8% from the floor.

Home side won last seven Alabama-Georgia games; Tide lost last three visits to Athens by 9-7-6 points, but they did beat Dawgs in OT in SEC tourney last March. Green played 22 minutes off bench in last game in his first action after missing two games (shoulder). Bama lost at Dayton by 12, hammered Ga Tech in its temporary home in its only two true away games. Ironic that Memphis-UAB play same week Gene Bartow passed away; he founded Blazers' program, led Tigers to '73 Final Four. Memphis won last nine games in this regional rivalry, winning four visits here by 1-11-5-3ot points. Jeronne Maymon needs to find his game. The Tennessee power forward dominated Memphis in the team’s first meeting, posting 32 points and 20 rebounds against the Tigers at the Maui Invitational. But in the team’s traditional regular season meeting, he dropped a mere nine points on 4-of-15 shooting in a blowout loss at FedExForum. Maymon was outmuscled in the post and because the team couldn’t get feed the ball down low – or have him finish – the Volunteers shot a mere 36.2 percent from the floor.

"My shot wasn't falling,'' Maymon told KnoxNews.com. "My layups were rimming out, and I couldn't find my touch.''

Duke Blue Devils at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, noon, ESPNU (11.5, 138.5)

Glen Rice Jr. (13.2 ppg) needs to find a way to snap out of his funk. The Yellow Jackets star was shutout over 19 minutes in a recent loss to Fordham and followed that up by scoring a meager five points on 2-of-7 shooting in 22 minutes against Alabama. Not surprisingly, Georgia Tech mustered a season-low 48 points against the Crimson Tide, as the team committed 22 turnovers against a smothering press.

“We’re trying to instill a much more committed basketball team and doing things the right way, and that’s going to take some time,” Georgia Tech coach Brian Gregory told the Atlanta-Journal Constitution. “As the process occurs there’s going to be some slippage.”

Kansas Jayhawks at Oklahoma Sooners, 2 p.m., ESPNU (XX)

Kansas center Jeff Withey is back with a vengeance. After playing a measly eight minutes in a win over North Dakota, his coaches began riding him to play more aggressive and “dunk everything.”

All he did was deliver in a big win over Kansas State with eight points, nine rebounds, six blocks and two assists to go with a thunderous slam over 6-foot-11 Wildcats forward Jordan Henriquez.

“Last game was definitely frustrating, but, oh well. It’s in the past. It’s a new game,” Withey told LJWorld.com. “Coach always says, ‘Move forward.’ It was a good start for the Big 12 season and definitely a confidence-booster after last game.”

Ohio State Buckeyes at Iowa Hawkeyes, 3 p.m., Big Ten Network (11.5, 141.5)

The Hawkeyes have a new weapon in their arsenal: A 2-3 zone defense. After using it to force Wisconsin into a slew of terrible 3-pointers in an upset win at Madison, Iowa again switched to zone from man-to-man after falling behind by 11 points at Minnesota to rally for the win. The Golden Gophers finished a wretched 4 of 23 from distance.

“It gives us a sense of what we’re capable of,” McCaffery told HawkCentral.com. “The bottom line is you’ve got to get one like this. That leads to more, hopefully.”

Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Louisville Cardinals, 4 p.m., ESPNU (-12.5, 131)

The Fighting Irish need to develop a second gear. The Cincinnati Bearcats pressure defense continually forced Notre Dame to play at a faster tempo than it was accustom as the team scored a season-low 55 points and continually rushed outside shots. For the game, the Fighting Irish were a dismal 5 of 28 from 3-point range as settled for too many quick jumpers. Louisville will look to press relentlessly.

"Obviously (junior) D.J. (Stephens; knees) won't go," Memphis coach Josh Pastner told the Memphis Commercial Appeal. "I think (junior) Ferrakohn (Hall) has got a little bit of a stinger on his arm, but he'll be OK. Everyone else will be good. I would say depending on how Carmouche feels with his knee, I would say he's questionable."

St. John’s has dropped two straight against Big East foes after opening conference play with a win over Providence. The Red Storm was run off the court in a 73-58 loss to Louisville on Tuesday.

St. John’s has a very green roster, with seven first-year players, a sophomore and two juniors. The team is leaning too heavily on freshman D’Angelo Harrison and Maurice Harkless for offensive.

Cincinnati has thrived with a four-guard lineup, winning seven straight and averaging more than 81 points.

The Bearcats are hitting 38 percent from beyond the arc, tops in the Big East, while St. John’s is the worst 3-point shooting team at 25 percent.

Cincinnati welcomed back star forward Yancy Gates against Notre Dame on Wednesday. The 6-9 senior, who had been suspended six games, came off the bench for six points and eight rebounds. His production will only increase.

No. 20 Marquette Golden Eagles at No. 1 Syracuse Orange (-11.5, 148)

Top-ranked Syracuse, one of four remaining undefeated teams, opened Big East play against easy pickings. The Orange handled Seton Hall, DePaul and Providence by a combined 59 points.

Now the Orange get a better test.

The Golden Eagles are coming off a bitter loss to Georgetown in which they blew a 17-point lead. The Hoyas found an incredible rhythm, hitting 76 percent in the second half.

Marquette has top-of-the-line talent in Darius Johnson-Odom (17.9 ppg) and Jae Crowder (16.6 ppg, 7.3). And coach Buzz Williams’ teams always seem to bounce back strong.

Marquette won the most recent matchup, 66-62 in last year’s NCAA Tournament. Syracuse also lost the only regular-season meeting last season, 76-70 at Marquette on Jan. 29. The Golden Eagles overcame a 13-point, 13-assist effort by Scoop Jardine.

Syracuse should win, but grab the generous points.

Detroit Red Wings at Toronto Maple Leafs (137, 5.5)

If you believe the buzz and the NHL rumor mill, these two Original Six franchises could well be headed toward a collision in next year’s Winter Classic somewhere in Michigan. For now, the Air Canada Centre will have to do for this weekend’s Hockey Night opener.

Wilson’s net results

Toronto coach Ron Wilson realizes the situation his Maple Leafs are in. In October, when Toronto was surging, all was great. But now, after reality hit a little bit and the Eastern Conference elite -- the Bruins, Rangers, and Flyers -- woke up and rose to the surface, points are absolutely precious for the Maple Leafs as they jockey for a seat in the back of the playoff bus.

That means all eyes are on his goaltending situation, and to the minute, Jonas Gustavsson is earning his keep. Gustavsson made 24 saves en route to an impressive 4-0 shutout of Winnipeg Thursday night.

James Reimer (7-4-4) isn't a bad option, but he hasn't played since the calendar year changed, and it's clear that Wilson is coaching for today and not worrying about long-term circumstances. The Maple Leafs fans wouldn't have it any other way.

Rested Red Wings

A three-day respite is a rare deal in the NHL, especially when the calendar turns to January. So, the Red Wings can consider themselves fortunate that they haven't played since Tuesday night.

They opened a four-game road trip with a 5-4 win over the Stars in Dallas, and have had time to get their ducks in a row before landing at the Air Canada Centre.

Detroit is 25-13-1, good for second place in the Central Division as the weekend begins, and has a huge matchup at Chicago Sunday night. There's a slight chance that the Red Wings may even overlook Toronto in this spot. Keep that on your radar when sizing up this matchup.

The focus - as the Maple Leafs battle for the postseason over the next few months - will be in net, but the efforts of forwards Phil Kessel and Joffrey Lupul should not be overlooked at any point.

While offense has come from other sources, these two have truly carved out terrific seasons in Toronto, as Kessel has 23 goals and 46 points and Lupul has 18 and 45. More important to the long-term future of the club, they have both played 40 games and combined, on a mediocre defensive team, they are a plus-13.

If the Maple Leafs are able to cement their status in the playoff tournament, it's going to be on the backs of these two players.

History

The Maple Leafs have won three of the last four meetings, though that run stretches back to 2008. On March 26 last season, Detroit doubled up Toronto, 4-2. Five of the last six Red Wings games have gone under, but four of the last six Maple Leafs games have gone under. So, choose your total wisely.

Minnesota Wild at Calgary Flames (-124, 5)

The road team is in, and the home team is out with regards to the Western Conference playoff race, but both clubs have plenty of star power. And with points ever so valuable this time of year, it all adds up to a dandy of a nightcap in Calgary. We’re entering must-win territory for the Flames, so expect their best in the Saturday spotlight, especially after being drubbed in Boston.

One Wild ride

It's hard to knock the Wild for their recent slide, when you consider how hot they were earlier in the year. All added up, the team is probably right where it should be.

At 21-14-6, short-handed Minnesota no longer leads the Northwest Division and has lost 10 of 11 games, but it still has 48 points. And if the season ended Thursday night, Minnesota would have snared the No. 6 seed and would have drawn a matchup with San Jose in the first round.

Streaks, up and down, happen in this league. But this would be a good time to start a new positive one for the Wild, and perhaps they take the national stage here to begin that run.

Can’t get home fast enough

At 18-19-5, the time is now for Calgary to make a run and stay relevant in the Western Conference. Though, it will be a tough task to get over what happened to them on in Boston Thursday.

Granted, losing to the red-hot Bruins is nothing to be embarrassed over. Boston is deep, ultra-talented and playing with the same edge it used in June to snare the Stanley Cup.

But 9-0? That just can’t happen. Calgary allowed two goals apiece to Nathan Horton and Patrice Bergeron, and Tuukka Rask while Tim Thomas stoned them on the other end. It was so bad, Calgary defenseman Chris Butler actually posted a minus-7 rating.

Getting back home will help. But with only 48 hours to prepare for this matchup with Minnesota, you have to wonder what kind of mindset the Flames are in right now.

Needing some more out of Mikko

If you polled most Minnesota fans at the beginning of the season, they probably would have taken the numbers that forward Mikko Koivu has posted so far. He does, after all, have 23 assists and is a plus-10.

But if he's going to pull the Wild out of this funk, he clearly is going to have to find the net a little more. He has just nine goals and in a 3-0 loss to Vancouver Wednesday, he was a minus-1 with just one shot.

He has only scored one goal in the last five games, and if it were not for a neat, little run from Dec. 6-10, when he scored three goals in three games, we might be looking at one of the bigger disappointments in the Western Conference.

History

Perhaps this is just what the doctor ordered for Calgary. The Flames have won two of three in the series this season, including a 2-1 nail-biter on Dec. 20. It’s tough to grab a trend in the total category for this rivalry. The last five installments have gone 2-2-l, though the Flames have gone over in three of their last four games.
