Magic Host Bulls Before Beginning Western Swing

This weekend might be dominated by the NFL playoffs, so it's easy to forget about other action across the sports betting world, and that includes some huge NBA games that should not be overlooked.

Has Dwight Howard played his last home game in an Orlando Magic uniform? The news broke on Thursday that the man they call “Superman” in the Sunshine State has a new suitor in the Golden State Warriors. There are still a bevy of teams trying to land Howard, and most are in the Western Conference.

The New Jersey Nets seem to be out of the equation at least for now, as the key piece to the puzzle that they plan on trading to the Magic is Brook Lopez, who is out for at least the next month with an ankle injury. That could just leave teams like the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers and Warriors involved in the trade talks.

Ironically, starting on Sunday with a trip to the Sacramento Kings, the Magic are embarking on a West Coast swing that ends next week with – you guessed it – a trip to Golden State.

This is really going to be the first extended period of tough schedule for the Magic. They have only had one game this season in which they haven’t been favored, a loss on Christmas night to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The game against Sacramento on Sunday is coming against a hungry team with a new head coach in Keith Smith, and it could be the start of a very tense next nine days on the road for Orlando.

The Magic aren’t nearly the only championship contender that is going to be spending a heck of a lot of time on the road this weekend.

The Chicago Bulls face this Orlando team at the Amway Center on Friday night, and from there, they have to take on the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday. The trip to Philips Arena will be the seventh road game of the year for the Bulls, who are already 3-2 ATS on the season coming into Friday as guests.

Keep an eye on Derrick Rose. He is expected to play on Friday despite an elbow injury, but it could be interesting to see how he reacts to playing the back-to-back in two different cities with the injury.

The Miami Heat are the only team in the NBA that hasn’t lost a game on the road this year. The team is only 2-2 ATS in that stretch though, and Miami was lucky to get out of Atlanta with a 116-109 triumph in three overtimes on Thursday. Now the Heat travel to the lowly New Jersey Nets on Saturday night with a good chance to improve to 5-0 on the season on the road.

Elsewhere on the Saturday slate, the New York Knicks look to right the ship to the start of their season when they visit the Detroit Pistons. The Denver Nuggets and San Antonio Spurs collide in the Lone Star State for clash of 5-2 teams. The Dallas Mavericks, who have suddenly gotten back within two games of the .500 mark, take on the new-look New Orleans Hornets.

Sunday’s featured game pits the Spurs against the Thunder. Many expect this to be a matchup of two of legitimate contenders for the NBA championship. San Antonio is 0-2 SU and ATS on the road this year, and this will be as tough of a task as they have to face this year against Oklahoma City in the Sooner State.

The Los Angeles Lakers will be back at home and hoping to get back above .500 on Sunday when they take on another team that enters Friday night right at the .500 mark, the Memphis Grizzlies.

Monday night features a relatively quiet schedule with just six games on tap. The highlight of the night will pit the Hornets against the Denver Nuggets at Pepsi Arena. Elsewhere, the Hawks will visit the struggling Nets, and the Pacers will hope to take care of the Philadelphia 76ers in the City of Brotherly Love.

Butler Bulldogs Part Of Friday Horizon League Action

Butler is a small favorite on the road Friday night against Wright State.
We expected to see a bit of a down season for the Butler Bulldogs, and with their decline, an accompanying slip in general for the Horizon League. What was expected to help make up for Butler's drop-off was a bit more out of Detroit, plus continued progression by Cleveland State and the consistent threat from Valparaiso.

The Vikings and Crusaders have done their part mostly, and the Bulldogs are starting to get things together, but the Titans have imploded and rank among the most disappointing groups of college talent this campaign.

Several of those teams, along with the suddenly-hot Wright State Raiders, are part of a light Friday night college basketball betting slate.

Butler at Wright State (+2, 115½)
    Friday, Jan. 6, 7:00 p.m. (ET) ESPNU
Ervin J. Nutter Center, Dayton, OH

A good theme song for Brad Stevens and the Bulldogs to this point in the season might be John Hiatt's Slow Turnin'. Butler (8-7 SU, 2-8-2 ATS) is still playing pretty good defense, limiting opponents to less than 63 points per game which is good enough to rank in the top 25 percent of the nation. But Stevens has yet to have anyone step up on the offensive end to help make up for the two big stars from the past two years, Matt Howard and Shelvin Mack.

There are some signs that the rebuilding is starting to come around, however, with a current three-game win streak and the club's only spread covers of the season in that span. Wins on this little trip to Wright State followed by a trek to Detroit could be huge confidence builders for the Bulldogs who are just 1-4 in true road games (1-3-1 against the spread).

Things are also beginning to look up for Billy Donlon and Wright State (8-8 SU, 7-6 ATS). Following a 4-8 start, that included early defeats to Ohio State and Florida, the Raiders have won and covered each of the last four games. The long-range shooting has been a big part of the win streak; Wright State has sunk 25-of-61 attempts (40.9%) from 3-point land the past three games, well above the 31.7 percent prior to that.

Julius Mays has led the way during the Raiders' four-game winning run, averaging 21 points in the stretch following a very hot-&-cold beginning to the campaign.

Wright State is presently tied with Milwaukee atop the Horizon League standings, each with a 3-1 mark. Butler comes in 2-1 in conference play, and the schools split last year's two matchups, each winning at home. The Raiders' 69-64 win over the Bulldogs here in Dayton came with Butler laying four points.

    Valparaiso at Detroit (-6, 151½)
    Friday, Jan. 6, 8:00 p.m. (ET) ESPN3
    Calihan Hall, Detroit

Cue up Detroit Breakdown by the J. Geils Band to set the tone for the Titans (7-9 SU, 5-8 ATS). The season got off on the wrong foot with suspensions for Eli Holman and Chris Blake, plus Nick Minnerath was lost for the season to a knee injury in November.

Holman has returned to help out, especially on the boards, and Blake could be getting close to finally seeing some game action. No official return has been announced regarding Blake, but he has been practicing with the team the past couple of weeks.

Detroit (1-3 Horizon League) has gotten good play out of guards Chase Simon and Ray McCallum, but this is a very bad shooting squad from outside which is allowing defenses to play off the perimeter and choke the Titans closer to the paint.

It's not like Valparaiso (9-6 SU, 5-7 ATS) is lighting it up from 3-point land as well, and the Crusaders definitely aren't making friends with bettors except those who have been fading Bryce Drew's crew. Valpo has dropped seven straight against the spread, winning just three of those games outright.

The Crusaders, who sit 2-1 in HL standings, beat Detroit all three meetings last season, including an 88-78 triumph in the quarterfinals of the conference tourney played in Milwaukee.

Cup Rematches Highlight NHL Betting Schedule

The Chicago Blackhawks visit the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday for the first time since hoisting the Stanley Cup there in 2010, setting the table for an exciting weekend of NHL betting action. The Blackhawks (24-11-4) are hoping a return to Philly will help them regain focus on winning the Cup for the second time in three years after falling 4-3 to the Edmonton Oilers at home on Monday.

Chicago is tied with the New York Rangers (24-9-4) for the most points in the NHL while the Flyers are simply looking to avoid losing for the sixth time in eight games. Philadelphia (22-11-4) is coming off a 3-2 home loss to the New York in the annual Winter Classic on Monday at Citizens Bank Park. Two of the team’s last three losses have come against the Rangers, who are now atop the Atlantic Division.

The Flyers will not have to worry about battling a familiar face when they meet the Blackhawks, as their former enforcer Daniel Carcillo was suspended seven games on Wednesday for boarding Edmonton defenseman Tom Gilbert during Monday’s loss. Carcillo spent the previous three years in Philadelphia and led the NHL in penalty minutes with the Phoenix Coyotes in 2007.

A bigger concern for Chicago may be the scoring slump of Stanley Cup hero Patrick Kane, who has not tallied a goal in the last six games with just two in the past 20. Kane scored the series winner for the Blackhawks against the Flyers in overtime of Game 6 of the 2010 Stanley Cup final, which is the last time they visited Wells Fargo Center.

The Chicago-Philadelphia matchup is one of nine games on a nearly full slate leading up to this weekend. The Blackhawks turn around and head home to the United Center on Friday night for a meeting with the Colorado Avalanche (22-18-1) before hosting the Detroit Red Wings (25-13-1) for the second time in 10 days on Sunday. The Avalanche are one of the hottest teams in the league, winning eight of their past 10 games.

Other key games this weekend include a 2011 Stanley Cup rematch between the defending champion Boston Bruins (25-10-1) and the Vancouver Canucks (24-13-1) at TD Garden on Saturday, which will be broadcast on the NHL Network. Boston has also won eight of 10 and is coming off a 6-1 rout of the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday while Vancouver has dropped two in a row after losing 3-2 to the San Jose Sharks (19-11-4) in overtime at home on Monday.

The Canucks could not find a way to win on the road against the Bruins in the playoffs last year, as goalie Roberto Luongo became the goat when he surrendered 15 goals in three games at Boston and got pulled twice in favor of backup Corey Schneider. It is not known who will start in net for Vancouver yet, but Schneider is a Boston native and could get the call.

Another featured game on the NHL Network takes place on Friday when the Rangers visit the Pittsburgh Penguins (21-13-4). New York has seven of eight following a two-game skid and will be playing on consecutive nights after hosting the Florida Panthers (20-12-7) on Thursday. The Penguins will be playing their first game of 2012 since closing out 2011 with two straight losses.

Sunday's schedule is light with just three games, but it's an interesting trio of matchups nonetheless. The Flyers will be in Ottawa in a battle between the present second-place squads in the Atlantic and Northeast Divisions respectively. The Senators will be out to avenge a 7-2 beat-down Philly put on them in Ottawa back in mid-October.

Sunday night finds the Red Wings in Chicago to take on the Blackhawks who lead Detroit in the Central Division by just a point heading into Thursday's action. It's just the second meeting between the two rivals this season, the other coming recently (Dec. 30) in Chicago where the Blackhawks posted a 3-2 triumph.

Rounding out Sunday's card is a clash between the dregs of the Western Conference as Anaheim hosts Columbus. The Blue Jackets picked up one of their 10 wins to date over the Ducks with a 3-1 victory on their home ice in late-October.

        Friday's Ice Picks

        January 6, 2012

NHL Betting: More Friday Night Excitement

Buffalo Sabres (-120) at Carolina Hurricanes (-110)

The Buffalo Sabres will be a team to keep an eye on over the next few games. The Sabres are finally returning to health after an awful stretch of injuries - the most notable returnees being towering defenseman Tyler Myers and high-priced free agent signing Ville Leino.

And they couldn't be getting healthier at a better time. The Buffalo Sabres are 3-5-2 over their last 10 and have slipped to 11th in the Eastern Conference, not exactly where owner Terry Pegula thought they'd be after spending huge amounts of cash this summer to acquire the likes of Leino, Christian Ehrhoff and Robyn Regehr.

As for the Carolina Hurricanes…well, the 'Canes are still the worst team in the East and have allowed a league-high 139 goals this season. But take a closer look, and you'll see a team making slight improvements. The 'Canes are 4-3-3 over their last 10 and within one game of getting back to .500 at home - and that mark could be met with a win over Buffalo at the RBC Center this Friday.

Colorado Avalanche (+170) at Chicago Blackhawks (-210)

This game will be a tall order for the Colorado Avalanche. The Chicago Blackhawks will be in front of a raucous United Center crowd and are 14-4-3 at home this season, one of the best records in the NHL. The 'Hawks will also be in something of a bitter mood having lost a tough 5-4 game to the Flyers last night in Philadelphia.

As for the Avalanche…who knows? They've been on fire as of late, going 8-2-0 over their last 10, but are notoriously streaky and about to enter their toughest stretch of the season. The Avs will play back-to-back roadies tonight and tomorrow before spending almost all of January away from the Pepsi Center - six of their nine games after Saturday will be on the road.

New York Islanders (EVEN) at Anaheim Ducks (-130)

Two of the most disappointing teams in the NHL this season. The Anaheim Ducks finished fourth in the West a year ago and boast the reigning league MVP in Corey Perry. The Isles were on fire for the second half of the season with a young, energetic squad…but have fallen way back in the race for the Eastern Conference playoffs.

If you're looking to play a hunch, do note that Anaheim GM Bob Murray lit into his struggling club the other night. He said that almost the whole roster is available for trade, signifying to his troops that anybody can be shipped out at any time…to any location. Those are the kinds of messages that can light a fire under people, so perhaps the Ducks are a sneaky play here
