Ice picks: Monday's best NHL bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Jersey Devils at Ottawa Senators (-130, 5.5)

With both teams holding tenuous playoff spots, the Ottawa Senators and New Jersey Devils will look to distance themselves from the pack when they clash Monday in Ottawa.

The Devils and Senators are tied for sixth in the Eastern Conference with 43 points; the Devils are ranked higher by virtue of having two more victories. The Devils won the first of four meetings, prevailing 5-4 in a wild shootout affair in New Jersey on Dec. 8th. The game saw the teams combine for three shorthanded goals and 56 penalty minutes.

New Jersey is coming off a 3-1 home win over the Atlantic Division-rival Pittsburgh Penguins. David Clarkson and Zach Parise scored, and Ilya Kovalchuk converted on a penalty shot to lead the Devils. Patrik Elias added two assists and Brodeur made 29 saves for his third straight win, improving to 11-9-0 on the season. The Devils have won two straight games, and nine of their last 12. New Jersey is 11-9-0 on the road this season.

      Pick: Devils

Colorado Avalanche at Los Angeles Kings (-160, 5)

If the Los Angeles Kings are to maintain their standing on top of the Pacific Division, they must improve on their NHL-worst 2.13 goals per game. There is a good chance of that happening when the Kings host the Colorado Avalanche on Monday.

Los Angeles defeated Vancouver 4-1 on Saturday when Anze Kopitar scored for the first time in 18 games. If that wasn’t the spark Kopitar needed to get going, facing the Avalanche should light the fire as Kopitar has five goals and 14 points in his last 10 games against them.

Los Angeles is 4-0-2 since Darryl Sutter took over as coach, but has scored only 14 goals in the six games. The Kings have only two players – Mike Richards (13) and Kopitar (11) – who have scored more than 10, and will need players such as Simon Gagne (seven) and Dustin Penner (two) to stay healthy and score more.

Los Angeles is solid in goal with Jonathan Quick (17-10-5, 2.05, .931), who leads the NHL with five shutouts. After losing nine straight on the road, though, the Avalanche have won two in a row, including a 4-2 victory at Anaheim on Saturday as they began life without Matt Duchene.

      Pick: Kings

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' roll: Monday's best NBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Bucks at Denver Nuggets (-5.5, 200)

Denver was clinging to a lead over the Los Angeles Lakers on New Year’s Eve but couldn’t close the deal in the fourth quarter, falling 92-89. Denver’s leading scorer on the year, Ty Lawson, was held to just nine points.

He rebounded to score 10 by halftime Sunday against the Lakers and finished with 17 points and 10 assists in Denver's 99-90 win.

The Nuggets covered the 5.5-point spread to improve to 4-1 against the spread on the year. Denver is also on a 11-3-2 run against the number at home, and they’ll need to keep that going this season.

"We're all coming to the realization that it's going to be a quick year, kind of a wild-and-crazy year," Nuggets coach George Karl said of the schedule. "Our job is to find out how to continue to be a very good basketball team, with the normal NBA season probably not going to exist."

Karl will have his team ready to ride the momentum of Sunday's win.

            Pick: Nuggets

New Orleans Hornets at Utah Jazz (-6.5, 182.5)

The Utah Jazz were hammered 104-89 at San Antonio Saturday night after trailing by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter. It was the club’s third blowout loss in four games and the Jazz are starting to get worried.

“We’re a different team on the road. It’s obvious, for whatever reason,” Earl Watson told reporters. “But you can’t sit there and look for the reason why. You have to look for the reason how to win on the road. First, we’ve got to start getting close.”

Utah’s lone win this season was a 102-99 home win over Philadelphia but the Jazz are still only 7-19 against the spread in their last 26 home games.

The Jazz look to have more issues than just their play on the road.

            Pick: Hornets
