Monday’s betting tips: Flyers start backup goalie in Winter Classic

    Weather to watch

The NHL has moved the start of Monday’s Winter Classic between the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers from 1 p.m. ET to 3 p.m. ET. The game is being played outdoors at Citizens Bank Park and the league hopes the later start time will help the ice conditions. Meteorologists expect temperature to be in the high 30s or low 40s with upwards of 20 mph winds.

    Who’s hot

NBA: Minnesota has dropped 15 straight games dating back to last season but is 3-0 against the number this year.

NHL: New Jersey is 7-2 in its last nine.

NCAAF: Houston is 7-1 against the spread in its last eight.

NCAAB: Virginia is 14-3 against the spread in its last 17 road games.

    Who’s not

NBA: Indiana is 10-1 against the spread in its last 11 meetings with New Jersey.

NHL: Edmonton is 4-10 in its last 14 against Chicago.

NCAAF: Florida is 0-8 against the spread in its last eight overall.

NCAAB: Baylor is 4-10 against the spread in its last 14 home games.

    Key stat

58.8 – It may only be early in the NBA season, but it’s worth noting that 58.8 percent (50-35) of games heading into Sunday’s action had played under the total. Keep track of all our NBA trends here.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Amar’e Stoudemire, New York Knicks – Stoudemire sprained his ankle Thursday against the Lakers and is considered questionable for Monday’s game against Toronto. He’s averaging 17.3 points and six rebounds per game.

    Game of the day

Stanford at Oklahoma State (-3.5, 73.5)

    Notable quotable

"(Cousins) continually, aggressively, lets it be known that he is unwilling/unable to embrace traveling in the same direction as his team, it cannot be ignored indefinitely." - Sacramento coach Paul Westphal said in a statement about DeMarcus Cousins, who has been told to stay away from the team and wasn’t on the club’s flight to Memphis. Cousins is averaging 13 points and 11 rebounds this year.

    Notes and tips

Oddsmakers opened with Oklahoma State set as a 3.5-point favorite in the Fiesta Bowl against Stanford but a number of books moved the Cowboys to -4 by Sunday evening. Oklahoma State is 19-7 against the spread in its last 26 games overall while more than 62 percent of *********** Consensus bettors are supporting the Cowboys.

The Philadelphia Flyers will start goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky - not high-priced offseason acquisition Ilya Bryzgalov - in Monday's Winter Classic against the Atlantic Division rival New York Rangers. Bobrovsky (8-2-1, 2.52 goals-against average) has fared well in his backup role this season. The second-year netminder has won his last three starts - including stopping 24 of 26 shots in a 4-2 win over the Keystone State rival Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday. Bobrovsky also played well in a 2-0 loss to the Rangers on Nov. 26. Signed to a nine-year, $51 million contract in the offseason, Bryzgalov (14-8-3, 3.01 goals-against average) has lost his last four starts - permitting 16 goals in the process. The 31-year-old Russian has won just one of four career starts versus the Rangers. The Flyers are set as -135 favorites.

Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin has been ruled out of Monday's TicketCity Bowl because of the head injury he sustained during a locker room altercation with a teammate last month. Rob Bolden will draw the start against Houston, Nittany Lions interim coach Tom Bradley confirmed on Sunday. McGloin suffered a concussion and a seizure following a locker-room scuffle with wide receiver Curtis Drake on Dec. 17. Bolden started the team's first seven games of the season before giving way to McGloin. Penn State is a 7-point underdog.

NHL Winter Classic: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at Philadelphia Flyers (-135, 5.5)

The NHL could not have dreamt this one up any better, as the top two teams in the Atlantic Division, and two of the top four teams in the Eastern Conference, renew a raucous rivalry with a state-of-the-art baseball field as a bold backdrop.

          Rolling into the New Year

The elite teams in the Eastern Conference took a wait-and-see approach to the Rangers this season. They opened up with a marathon road trip as the new Madison Square Garden was being finished, and then had to break in some new players - Brad Richards - and get rid of some old ones - Sean Avery.

But as we switch the calendar to 2012, it’s about time the rest of the conference admits the Rangers are here to stay. Thanks to a 4-1 victory over Florida Friday, New York found itself with 50 points, two more than the Flyers, and on top of the East. The Rangers have plenty of offense, an adequate defense, and veteran goaltender Henrik Lundqvist is perhaps playing better than he ever has.

There’s plenty of season left, and the Bruins, Penguins and Flyers will still have something to say before we head for the postseason, but it certainly appears that the Rangers are in it for the long haul.

          Producing without Pronger

There is a school of thought that says the Flyers can survive without injured captain Chris Pronger in the regular season, thanks to the team’s depth on defense. But that the lack of his towering presence and postseason experience might be the team’s downfall in the playoffs.

That remains to be seen, but what should matter now is that the Flyers are still a pretty good bet without Pronger, and you might be able to snag some value with this team now that the Las Vegas pros are viewing it as a short-handed one.

Out with concussion problems and a knee injury, Pronger hasn’t played since Nov. 19, but Philadelphia has gone 11-5-1 since that date. The Flyers had nine wins in December alone, and Andrej Meszaros (five goals, 12 points) and Kimmo Timonen (22 assists, plus-12) have picked up the slack on the back line.

          Believing in Brandon

It took a long time for Rangers forward Brandon Dubinsky to get going this year. But ever so slowly he’s recovering and when it’s all said and done, he may have a decent year, after all.

Dubinsky didn’t score a goal until Nov. 11 in a 5-1 victory over Carolina and he’s still not lighting the lamp with any regularity. But he does have four goals and 18 points, and poked one through in that win over the Panthers. In the game at Florida, he had three shots, 22 shifts and 17:02 time on the ice.

Still going and going and going

Much was made of Eric Lindros’ return for the Alumni Game Saturday to a city that clearly had a love-hate relationship with him. Lindros’ appearance was even more special, considering he played for both the Rangers and Flyers during his career.

But as long as we’re thinking about some blasts from the past, how about looking at another Jaromir Jagr, who finetuned his game in Russia for three years - and is another player who has suited up for both the Rangers and Flyers. The latter is certainly glad he made it back to the NHL this season.

Jagr has 12 goals, 31 points, is a plus-12 for Philadelphia and has truly adapted to coach Peter Laviolette’s system. He is getting back on defense, something he didn’t do well in Washington and Pittsburgh, and he is loading up the cannon with regularity. In fact, in a 4-3 win over the Ducks on Dec. 2, he had 10 shots.

          Watching the weather

The NHL might want to consider skipping the East next year, when deciding on the next Classic. After delaying last year’s game in Pittsburgh seven hours, waiting for a rain storm to pass, the league delayed the Alumni Game in Philadelphia Saturday two hours because of warm temperatures and too much sunshine.

All that said, Monday should be a winter wonderland in the City of Brotherly Love, as there is a chance of flurries, with a high of 41 degrees and a low of 25. Winds are expected to blowing as high as 20 mph. The league has pushed the opening puck drop back to 3 p.m. ET from its original start of 1 p.m., hoping to preserve the ice conditions.

          History

Think New York. The Rangers are already 2-0 this season against the Flyers, including a 4-2 victory at Madison Square Garden in a Classic primer on Dec. 23. Plus, the Rangers enter this game, having won six of the last seven contests, dropping only a 4-1 decision to Washington on Wednesday.

Three of the four previous Winter Classic matchups have played under the total. The Heritage Classic, another outdoor event, played over in 2003 and under last year in Calgary.

Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

            HOT TEAM: Colorado Avalanche

For a snapshot of just how difficult it's going to be to make the playoffs in the Western Conference this season, look no further than Colorado. The young-and-hungry Avalanche are the conference's hottest team, and if the season ended on New Year's Eve, they wouldn't have even qualified for the tournament.

But there's plenty of time to rally, and if the Avs keep up this pace, they should finish in the top eight. Colorado closed December with seven wins in the last eight attempts, yet the club still trailed Vancouver by seven points in the Northwest Division, and stood in ninth place overall headed into Monday's game versus Los Angeles.

Strangely enough, the Avalanche don't have a player with 30 points yet, but their balance and depth has been on display through the last two weeks. Ryan O'Reilly (28), Milan Hejduk (25), Matt Duchene (24), Paul Stastny (21) and Gabriel Landeskog (20) are close, though Duchene is out with a right knee injury, and goaltenders Semyon Varlamov and Jean-Sebastien Giguere have combined for a 2.65 goals-against average.

All told, though, this team is still very much underrated, and you will be able to snare some value out of the Avalanche as long as they stay relatively healthy.

            COLD TEAM: Columbus Blue Jackets

The moribund Blue Jackets began to show a bit of life around Thanksgiving, but have since returned to their lowly ways and clearly finished the calendar year as one of the league's best fade teams, regardless of value. A 4-2 loss to the Capitals on New Year's Eve was Columbus' seventh in the last eight games, six of which came in regulation. In that stretch, they scored two goals or fewer five times.

When the season began, there was such a buzz about the forward tandem of Rick Nash and Jeff Carter, and how it finally may lead the Blue Jackets back to the postseason. And while you can give them a small pass because of Carter's earlier injury, the fact of the matter is that the two high-priced snipers have combined for just 22 goals, and they are a combined minus-27.

The good news for Columbus is that there is a nice, little break here this week to begin to figure things out. The Blue Jackets don't play until Thursday, at San Jose, and they will only play three games in the year's first eight days.

            OVER PLAY: Tampa Bay Lightning

Hard to find many positives in the first half of the season for Tampa Bay, a team that came within one goal and one game of the Stanley Cup final last season. A lot of critics pointed to that miracle run, which ended in a Game 7 conference final loss in Boston, as a fluke. And if you were one of those, than take a bow.

Despite some of the best offensive talent in the league -- forwards Steven Stamkos, Martin St. Louis and Vincent Lecavalier -- the Lightning closed the calendar year at 17-17-3.

That said, if you're looking for the best way to cash in on Lightning games, think over. Tampa Bay's left-wing-lock system isn't working this season and the December final scores are proof. The Lightning defeated Carolina, 5-2, on New Year's Eve, and that followed a 4-3 win over Montreal and a 5-1 win over Philadelphia.

Four of the last five December games for the Lightning, in fact, went over, and with a busy week to open January -- Tampa Bay plays at Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal in a five-day span, starting on Tuesday -- there might be some more overs in store.

            UNDER PLAY: Buffalo Sabres

Still very much a work in progress, the best laid plans of Terry Pegula, the new owner with deep pockets, just aren’t working out in Buffalo these days. The Sabres spent and spent and spent in the offseason, trying to give longtime coach Lindy Ruff some extra horses to get over the playoff hump.

It hasn’t panned out. The Sabres, who play Edmonton on Tuesday to open January, lost six of their last seven games in December, and the last three games, all defeats -- 3-1 at New Jersey, 3-1 at Washington, and 3-2 in overtime vs. Ottawa -- all went under.

The players brought in to boost the scoring, well, let’s just say they have been a bit of a disappointment. Defenseman Christian Ehrhoff, who helped Vancouver to the Stanley Cup Finals last season, has three goals and 17 points, but is a minus-11. And left wing Ville Leino, a key cog in Philadelphia’s Atlantic Division title last year, is out with a lower-body injury, and has just three goals and 10 points.

Until Ruff can figure out a rotation that works consistently, Buffalo will remain an under play, moving forward.

            SURVEYING THE SCHEDULE:

** Doesn’t appear like the Panthers will have a cakewalk to the Southeast Division title, after all. Upstart Winnipeg just keeps on chugging, and it’s hard to believe that Alex Ovechkin and Washington won’t be heard from by the time it’s all said and done. But, at the least, Florida has some time to prepare for the new year. The Panthers don’t play until Thursday against the Rangers, and will only play three games in the year’s first nine days.

** On the opposite end of the spectrum are the Canucks, who will be busy to open the year. Mayve that’s a good thing with the way defending Western Conference-champion Vancouver has been playing of late, but either way, Vancouver has five games in the first 10 days of January, including a Monday date with San Jose.

                    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Some notes on Monday's bowl games

-- Since 1993, Pac-12 teams other than USC are 1-9 in the Rose Bowl.

-- Favorites are 9-2 vs spread in Florida's games this season.

-- SEC teams have been favored over Big Dozen teams in each of the last eight Capital One Bowls, but lost five of the last seven SU.

-- Georgia won four of last five bowls, scoring 35 ppg in those wins.

-- Big Dozen bowl underdogs are 17-15 since 2006, but 0-2 this year.

-- Stanford covered 13 of last 15 games; Oklahoma State is 18-6-1 vs the spread in its last 25.

                    ****************

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday.........

                    13) Giants averaged 9.5 ypa, with Victor Cruz catching six balls for 178 yards, as they won NFC East with a surprisingly-easy 31-14 win, but the fact of the matter is this-- Giants just had emotionally-charged games with Jets/Cowboys the last two weeks. When Atlanta comes calling on Sunday, the Giants wouldn't be human if they didn't come out flat.

Falcons are a very live underdog next week.

                    12) Its funny; I was in Las Vegas for Week 8 of the regular season, when the Texans beat Jacksonville 24-14 to get to 5-3; if you had told me that in Week 17, the Texans would be resting TJ Yates to get ready for a playoff game, I would've looked at you strange, because I'm not sure I knew Yates was in the NFL back then. But now Yates is a big man in Houston, and the Texans are hosting their first playoff game Saturday.

                    11) Say what you want about the Bengals, but they struck gold when they drafted Andy Dalton with 35th pick last April; Locker-Gabbard-Ponder were all picked ahead of him (so was Cam Newton).

                    10) Miami had a 21-play, 94-yard TD drive that put them ahead for good in fourth quarter against the Jets. I'm telling ya, Dolphins don't need a QB in the draft-- Matt Moore should be their guy going forward.

                    9) Back in August, did anyone have Matthew Stafford passing for 5,000+ yards this season? Nah, me either.......

                    8) With 6:49 left before halftime, Buccaneers trailed 42-0 in Atlanta. This is the definition of quitting, especially when the sixth TD was an 81-yard running play. Tampa Bay's last win was in October.

                    7) Interesting that 49ers got a home playoff game during the day, since the ballpark had electrical problems during their Monday night home game vs Pittsburgh in Week 15. NFL doesn't want to chance that happening again.

                    6) Half of Arizona's eight home games went OT this year, and Cardinals won them all, still finishing 8-8. Not sure if thats good or bad. Guess it is probably a little of both.

                    5) Ravens' guard Marshal Yanda committed a false start with 2:39 left in Sunday's win at Cincinnati; it was his first penalty all season.

                    4) Other than the hefty paycheck, coaching an NBA team can't be lot of fun; DeMarcus Cousins demanded to be traded from the Kings Saturday, after the fourth game of the season. Four games.

                    3) Redskins' PK Graham Gano had five field goals blocked this year, most for any kicker since 1997.

                    2) Charger-Raider game was an old-fashioned AFL shootout; no sacks, no 3/outs, with teams a combined 15-23 on third down. Bolts averaged 11.9 ypa, Oakland 9.7. Fun game to watch, but in the end, Raiders paid a hefty praice for Carson Palmer and they didn't make the playoffs. Not good.

                    1) Chiefs 7, Broncos 3 will do nothing to quiet the discussion of whether the Tim Tebow era will continue next season in Denver. It does confirm why they got rid of Kyle Orton, though. In two games against the Chiefs this year, Tebow completed 8 of 30 passes. Mr Elway can't be liking that.

Texas A&M Aggies at Baylor Bears (-13, 124)

The Big 12’s best defensive teams square off as No. 7 Baylor hosts Texas A&M in the conference opener for both teams.

Back in October, Texas A&M was tabbed as the co-favorites with Kansas to win the Big 12, but Baylor — along with No. 8 Missouri — have been the most impressive team in the league through the first two months of the season. Texas A&M ranks first in the conference in scoring defense at 55.8 points allowed per game, while Baylor is second at 58.8.

With a 54-52 win over Mississippi State on Wednesday, Baylor completed its perfect run through the non-conference slate and are off to the best start in program history. In addition, Baylor’s 13-game winning streak tied the 1945-46 team for the longest in school history.

On a team dominated by lengthy frontcourt players, guard Pierre Jackson is picking up the slack in the backcourt. Jackson has led the Bears in scoring the last two games and scored the game-winning layup with 28 seconds left against the Bulldogs.

As good as the Aggies have been on defense, they’ve been equally inept on the offensive end, where they rank last in the Big 12 at only 64.8 points per game.

                          Pick: Under

Rhode Island Rams at Boston College Eagles (-3, 136)

This is a transition season for Boston College, with nine freshmen and 12 newcomers on the roster. The Eagles knew they would take their lumps, while gaining experience, and there have been no surprises.

Boston College will try to add one more victory to its resume against visiting Rhode Island Monday before ACC play begins. Boston College, who begin league play at No. 6 North Carolina on Jan. 7, had a three-game win streak snapped with a 67-46 loss to No. 23 Harvard Thursday. Rhode Island, which has dropped nine of its last 10 games, is likely to be without its top two scorers. Jamal Wilson was dismissed Dec. 27 for violating team rules and Nikola Malesevic is recovering from a broken hand.

The Eagles had improved on offense, averaging 72.6 points over five games, before being limited by Harvard. Dennis Clifford, a seven foot freshman center, has made a difference the last three games by averaging 13.3 points and is shooting 60 percent from the field on the season.

Freshman Patrick Heckmann leads Boston College in scoring (11.3) and Oregon transfer Matt Humphrey is next at 9.8. Freshman Ryan Anderson averages 8.8 points and a team-high 5.8 rebounds. The Eagles are shooting nearly 41 percent from the field.

                          Pick: Boston College
