Sunday's betting tips: Heat hungover after LeBron's bash?

    Who’s hot

    - Washington Redskins are 6-1 ATS in their last seven vs. NFC East.

    - Charlotte Bobcats are 9-3-1 ATS in the last 13 meetings with the Heat.

    - Nashville Predators are 6-1 in their last seven home games.

    Who’s not

    - Dallas Cowboys are 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall.

    - Villanova Wildcats are 1-10 ATS in their last 11 road games.

    - Washington Wizards are 0-4 ATS in their last four games overall.

    Key stat

6-0 – The Baltimore Ravens can finish a perfect 6-0 inside the AFC North for the first time in franchise history with a win over the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday. Baltimore is a 1-point road favorite and has gone 3-1-1 ATS versus division rivals this season.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Mike Conley, Memphis Grizzlies – the Grizzlies point guard injured his ankle against the Thunder Wednesday and is expected to miss Sunday’s game against the Bulls. Conley had 11 points, seven assists and three rebounds in the season opener versus San Antonio.

    Game of the Day

Dallas Cowboys at New York Giants (-3, 47.5)

    Notable quotable

“This is for the No. 1 seed, so we’re going out there and giving it all we’ve got for four quarters.’’ – Patriots WR Wes Welker talking about clinching the AFC No. 1 seed and home-field advantage in the playoffs in Sunday's game against Buffalo.

    Notes and tips

    - LeBron James is hosting a New Year’s Eve/Birthday party Saturday night, attended by a select 50 guest including teammates Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Miami hosts the Charlotte Bobcats Sunday and could be a little worse for wear after a big night out on the town.

    - The Atlanta Falcons will be watching the Detroit-Green Bay game with great interest – and bettors should too. If the Lions lose to the Packers in their 1 p.m. ET kickoff, then the Falcons have a chance to take the No. 5 seed in the NFC playoffs. If Detroit wins, Atlanta would be stuck in the No. 6 seed and Sunday’s game wouldn’t matter, leaving the team to rest most of its starters.

    - Look for a very physical game between Cincinnati and Pitt Sunday. Panthers coach Jamie Dixon is fed up with his team’s lack of intensity and toughness on defense after back-to-back losses and has preached physicality in practice this week. The Bearcats aren’t afraid to throw their weight around, which could mean a lot of scoring from the free-throw line – stopping the clock and making the over a tempting play.

      Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Six most popular picks and six least popular picks in Hilton handicapping contest, which has 517 contestants, all of whom who pick five NFL games a week against the spread. They put up $1,500 each, so these are serious handicappers........

      6) Miami Dolphins 93
      5) Houston Texans 96
      4) Carolina Panthers 126
      3) Pittsburgh Steelers 134
      2) New Jersey Giants 159
      1) Kansas City Chiefs 176

      27) St Louis Rams 40
      T28) Arizona Cardinals 34
      T28) Jacksonville Jaguars 34
      30) Tampa Bay Bucs 28
      31) Chicago Bears 27
      32) New Orleans Saints 21

      ******************

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wishing you all a Happy New Year.....

      13) Idea for reality TV—NFL Films should follow Adrian Peterson as he rehabs his injured knee. Average fans like myself have no idea how much work he has ahead of him. We’d have lot more respect for these athletes if we could see the work they put in to get back on the field.

      12) Wish the NFL would take the radios out of players’ helmets; coaches get to coach six days a week, preparing the players to play. Gameday should be the players’ day, where they do what they’ve been trained to do. Radios in the helmets makes the players too robotic.

      11) According to ESPN.com, Miami Heat’s Big 3 earns a total of $635,537 every single game; Heat rookie Norris Cole will earn $861,220…..all year.

      10) San Diego State is going to play football in the Big East, so shouldn’t they have to change the name of the league?

      9) Having NFL Network, its fun to get reacquainted with NFL Films and its great work. Still though, my favorite NFL Films moment was 30 years ago, when Marv Levy calls an official who is an old schoolmate of his an “……overofficious jerk.” Tremendous television.

      8) Raven-Bengal game Sunday is a sellout, meaning game will be televised locally, so if it’s a bad weather day, they’re still going to wind up a lot of no-shows.

      7) A’s trading closer Bailey makes perfect sense,s ince whats the point of a cruddy team paying a good closer. Not like Oakland will have a lot of leads to protect the next 2-3 summers.

      6) We need a Chick-fil-A and a Steak ‘n Shake here in Albany; both would do a tremendous business.

      5) Whomever planted the rumor about Mike Munchak going to Penn State embarrassed the school bigtime, unless Munchak is lying thru his teeth when he says he has no interest in replacing Joe Paterno. When the most prominent coaching alumni of a school says he has no interest, why should anyone else have any interest? Replacing a legend is very tough duty.

      4) If you had NBA League Pass on DirecTV last year, and you didn’t cancel during the lockout, they automatically re-newed you for this year at last year’s price, which is insane, since there are 19.5% less games this year than last. Greedy bastards. I’m waiting until next week to have my talk with them about whether or not I’m signing up this year.

      3) Once in a while I stop at the Burger King drive-thru window on way to work to get breakfast; always order two sausage/egg/cheese biscuits, and without fail, they ALWAYS tell me they only have one biscuit left.

How is this possible? Do they get commission for selling the croissants? I’m just curious.

      2) I’d like to see a bald man elected President in 2016; it would say something for this country if, for once, we could elect someone who doesn’t look that good on TV. We don’t have any smart bald men in this country?

      1) Spring training starts in about seven weeks and still no word on where Prince Fielder will be playing; this is holding up the other free agent 1B’s from signing with new teams. Scumweasel agent Scott Boras must’ve gone on vacation for the holidays, though I thought greed never took a holiday.

South Florida lost five of its last seven games, losing last two by combined total of five points to two pretty good teams, Southern Miss/UConn. Big East home favorites are 3-2-1 vs spread so far this young season.

Villanova won four of its last five games vs Marquette, with last four all decided by 4 or less points; home side won five of last six series games, with Wildcats losing two of last three visits here (losses by 13-7, with a 74-72 win last visit). Fifth straight home game for Michigan.

Syracuse won its last five games vs DePaul by average of 15 points, but that was inflated by LY's 107-59 thrashing in Carrier Dome; Orange won its last two visits here, 60-55/59-57. 6-7 Penn is 0-6 vs teams in top 100, but 20-point loss to Pitt was their only loss by more than 8 points- they lost by 4 at UCLA, not that the Bruins are great this year, but Quakers are better than their record would suggest. Minnesota at Michigan (-7, 132.5)

While 12 home wins in as many tries did wonders for the overall record, Minnesota could not find enough answers in Tuesday’s 81-72 double-overtime loss at Illinois despite a game-high 22 points from Ralph Sampson III.

Minnesota will attempt to even up its road record Monday against No. 16 Michigan, which improved to 8-0 at the Crisler Center with its 71-53 victory over Penn State in its conference opener Thursday.

Star forward Trevor Mbakwe, who is out for the season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament during Minnesota's loss to Dayton on Nov. 27, finally underwent reconstructive surgery on his injured right knee Friday. The Gophers are 6-1 in his absence.

Tim Hardaway Jr. scored a season-high 26 points, but shot just 1-of-7 from the 3-point line against Penn State. Hardaway Jr. has scored in double digits 11 times this season, going over the 20-point mark on four occasions.

The Wolverines have had three players score in double digits in all but one game this season.

                        Pick: Michigan -7

                        Villanova at Marquette (-10.5, 146.5)

Marquette coach Buzz Williams issued a challenge to his team after it was embarrassed at home by Vanderbilt in its non-conference finale Thursday.

“Season one is over,” Williams said. “Season number two starts (soon). We can respond like champs or we can respond like chumps.”

Williams hopes the latter isn’t the case Sunday afternoon when 13th-ranked Marquette hosts Villanova in its Big East opener. No matter the outcome, the Golden Eagles are sure to take a tumble in the rankings after being dismantled 74-57 by the Commodores.

Each of the last five meetings with Villanova have been decided by five points or less. The Wildcats prevailed 75-70 at the Pavilion last season, and lead the series 11-7. The Golden Eagles are 4-0 in conference openers at the Bradley Center.

The Wildcats, who play five freshmen, have lost six of nine. The Golden Eagles have lost two of three after a 10-0 start.

                        Pick: Marquette -10.5

Portland Trail Blazers at Los Angeles Clippers (-3, 203)

Portland is 3-0 for the second consecutive season and plays on the road for the first time this season when it meets the Los Angeles Clippers at Staples Center on Sunday night.

The Trail Blazers are aware that their fast start doesn’t mean much. They went 5-11 in their next 16 games last season.

“We'll try to ride this winning wave and cut down on turnovers - we can't do that against the Clippers, because they love (to take advantage of an opponent's) turnovers,” said Wesley Matthews, who had 25 points in a 111-102 victory over Denver on Thursday.

Portland is second in the league in scoring (106.3) and fourth in rebounds (48).

The Clippers will try to regroup after losing their home opener Friday night to Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls. Los Angeles was outrebounded 45-31.
“Our defense and our rebounding (are) obviously an issue,” coach Vinny Del Negro said. “We're giving up too many points right now.”

All five starters scored in double figures against Chicago, led by Blake Griffin’s 34 points, but the bench contributed just 11 points and five rebounds.

The Clippers were without Chauncey Billups (groin strain) on Friday and he remains day to day, according to Del Negro. Mo Williams started for Billups and had 13 points.

Blake and Blazer big man LaMarcus Aldridge should cancel each other out offensively which isn't good news for the Clippers. Los Angeles is still looking for a reliable, third scoring option.

                          Pick: Blazers +3

Toronto Raptors at Orlando Magic (-11.5, 186.5)

The rumors of Dwight Howard’s imminent departure do not appear to have phased the Orlando Magic through the first week.

The Magic have won three of their first four games and turned in their best performance yet on Friday with a 100-79 drubbing of the Charlotte Bobcats.
Howard has been a monster on the glass, averaging 17.5 rebounds, but it is the play of leading scorer Ryan Anderson that has really sparked Orlando lately. Anderson will try to throw up his third straight 20-plus point game when the Magic host the Toronto Raptors.

Howard will be stretched defensively while guarding Raptors center Andrea Bargnani, who likes to drift out toward the 3-point line. Bargnani scored 30 points on Friday but could not drag his team to a win over the Dallas Mavericks.

Toronto has dropped back-to-back games since opening the season with a win at Cleveland. New head coach Dwane Casey, who served as a top assistant with the Dallas Mavericks last season and was credited with that team’s defensive turnaround, has been trying to instill the same defensive intensity in his new team.

Toronto has yet to allow an opponent to reach 100 points but the offense has struggled, averaging 85.5 points in its two losses.

                          Pick: Magic -11.5
