Saturday's betting tips: Aggies in freefall at neutral sites

    Who’s hot

NCAAF: The over is 9-3 in Virginia’s last 12 non-conference games.

NCAAF: Vanderbilt is 6-1 ATS in its last seven games.

NBA: The over is 11-5 in the last 16 Knicks-Kings games.

NHL: Montreal is 11-4 in its last 15 games vs. Florida.

NCAAB: The home team is 5-0 ATS in the last five Iowa-Wisconsin games.

    Who’s not

NCAAF: UCLA is 5-12 ATS in its last 17 games as an underdog.

NCAAF: Texas A&M is 0-9 ATS in its last nine neutral-site games.

NBA: The Lakers are 1-5-1 ATS in their last seven games vs. Denver.

NHL: Carolina is 4-12 in its last 16 games playing on one day’s rest.

NCAAB: Providence is 0-5 ATS in its last five Big East games.

    Key stat

54.88 – That’s Georgia Tech’s third-down conversion percentage, best in the nation. With their option attack, the Jackets will try to play keepaway from Utah in the Sun Bowl. Books peg the Jackets as 2.5-point favorites. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. ET.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Dallas stars captain Brenden Morrow was hit in the left knee by a puck in Thursday’s loss to the Blue Jackets, and his status for Saturday’s game against Boston is unclear. He did not practice Friday. It’s the same knee Morrow tweaked in preseason, causing him to miss most of training camp. "I know it's a big game, so it's going to take something serious to keep me out of it," Morrow said. "That being said, I don't know how serious this is. It's on my knee, a knee that has given me problems this year and the MCL is a big factor in skating stride, but we'll do our best to try to maintain it and keep the swelling down and hopefully be ready." A big hitter, Morrow has 17 points and 63 penalty minutes this season.

    Game of the day

    Chick-fil-A Bowl

Virginia Cavaliers vs. Auburn Tigers (-3, 49.5)

    Notable quotable

"As long as I can deal with pain, I'll be out there. I don't want to let the guys down, so I'll do what I can to be out there." – Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger on whether he’ll play Sunday at Cleveland. Pittsburgh can clinch the AFC North with a win and a Ravens’ loss in Cincinnati. If Big Ben can’t go, 37-year-old Charlie Batch will start. Pittsburgh is set as a 7-point favorite.

    Notes and tips

Ravens WR Anquan Boldin practiced Friday despite having surgery Dec. 22 to fix slightly torn cartilage in his knee. The team said there is an outside chance he’ll play in Sunday’s critical game at Cincinnati. Favored by 1, Baltimore can clinch the AFC North and a first-round bye with a win. The 31-year-old Boldin has 57 receptions for 887 yards and three touchdowns this year.

The Golden State Warriors should have Stephen Curry (ankle) back but are expected to be without backcourt teammate Monta Ellis when they host Philly. Ellis attended his grandmother’s funeral in Mississippi on Friday, and coach Mark Jackson said he told Ellis to take all the time he needs before returning to the Bay Area.

Texans WR Andre Johnson will play against the Titans on Sunday after missing the past three games with a strained left hamstring. Johnson will be on a play count. "It was all depending on how the week went and everything went fine this past week, so I'll be able to go out and play a little bit on Sunday," Johnson said. Houston is a 1.5-point home dog against the desperate Titans.

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Louisville Cardinals at Kentucky Wildcats, noon, CBS (-12, 136.5)

Louisville point guard Peyton Siva appears fully recovered from an ankle injury he suffered earlier this season.

After going 2 of 12 from the floor with 10 turnovers combined the previous two games, he finished 5 of 10 from the field with 15 points, six assists and five steals in a three-point loss to Georgetown this week. And Siva maintains the Cardinals gained a valuable lesson in their first defeat of the season to the Hoyas.

“This humbled a lot of us,” Siva told the Louisville Courier- Journal. “It showed us our defense wasn’t that good. That we need to execute more on offense. It came to pass today that everybody learned what we needed to do.”

Iowa Hawkeyes at Wisconsin Badgers, 1 p.m., Big Ten Network (-18.5, 121)

Badgers forward Ryan Evans sure knows how to make a first impression. The junior scored a career-high 22 points in his first Big Ten start against Nebraska earlier this week, going 9 of 11 from the floor with two 3-pointers - doubling his season total. Evans was a defensive specialist on the team last year but his offensive game gives the defensive-minded Badgers a key new weapon in their arsenal.

"You know, (Evans) was open. He got himself open," Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "You always like that because it sends a message to other teams that you're going to play that you can't play off of him too much. That was very welcomed."

          Providence Friars at Georgetown Hoyas, 2 p.m., ESPN2 (-14, 136)

Georgetown freshman Otto Porter already has his own nickname from the student section: “Otto-matic.” The forward wasn’t on a lot of team’s radars because he opted not to play AAU ball, but he has turned plenty of heads in the nation’s capital, as he’s second on the team in rebounds (5.9 per game), third in minutes (26.8) and fifth in scoring (8.3).

“He’s the most prepared freshman that I’ve coached,” coach John Thompson III told the Washington Post. “That’s not saying he’s the best, but he’s the most prepared to compete at this level. And it’s because of that understanding.”

          Illinois Fighting Illini at Purdue Boilermakers, 4 p.m., ESPN2 (-6.5, 130)

It just might be the season of the bench mob for Purdue. The Boilermakers reserves combined for 36 points as they made 16 of 27 shots in a win over Iowa this week. The non-starters also contributed seven rebounds and committed just three turnovers. Not bad, for a group led by D.J. Byrd and John Hart, who both were hobbled by injuries early in the preseason.

“You have to have balance,” Purdue coach Matt Painter told the West Lafayette Journal Courier. “You have to have guys coming off the bench and being productive. Very rarely do you play 10 people in the first half, and they all have a field goal. I don't know if that ever has happened for us."

Creighton Bluejays at Wichita State Shockers, 6 p.m., ESPNU (-6.5, 151.5)

Bluejays coach Greg McDermott is discouraged by his team’s defense. Missouri State guards Kyle Weems and Anthony Downing shredded his squad in a 77-65 upset. With no lockdown defender, opposing stars have been able to dissect the Bluejay defense, including a 34-point performance by Northwestern guard Drew Crawford.

"We don't have a good enough defender to put on somebody that's capable of getting it going," McDermott told Omaha.com. "We have to try to mask it with our team defense, and we had some breakdowns. (Missouri State) came into our house, punched us in the mouth and we really didn't do anything about it."

          Ohio State Buckeyes at Indiana Hoosiers, 6 p.m., ESPN2 (4, 139)

Buckeyes guard Jordan Sibert is emerging as yet another weapon for the Big Ten favorites. Sibert, despite tearing ligaments in his right shooting hand earlier this week, buried four 3-pointers - half as many as he made in all 13 non-conference games this season – to help pace Ohio State to an 87-54 win over Northwestern. Sibert said he is finding his stroke after re-dedicating himself to shooting more than 400 jumpers a night after practice.

“I kind of got complacent,” he told the Columbus Dispatch. “With me having a good spring and summer shooting, I didn’t work as hard on my shot once preseason practice started in October.”

          Gonzaga Bulldogs at Xavier Musketeers, 8 p.m., ESPN2 (-3.5, 143)

Xavier will finally be back at full strength. The team struggled to a 1-2 mark at the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii as it welcomed back suspended guard Mark Lyons during the tournament. But the Musketeers will finally have their depth fully restored when Dez Wells and Landen Amos return from their suspensions against the Bulldogs.

“It was tough (sitting out),” Lyons told Cincinnati.com. “I saw my team out there struggling on offense and defense and I know that’s because of me and me being out. I made a bad decision in the game against UC. Now I’m back and ready for action.”

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Virginia Tech at Oklahoma State (-1, 125.5)

These teams played in the consolation finals of the NIT Season Tip-Off in New York. The Hokies won 59-57 as Erick Green scored 18 and Dorian Finney-Smith had 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Markel Brown had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Cowboys.

Unfortunately for OSU, the game was a harbinger. They’ve continued to struggle offensively, and rank 262nd nationally in shooting percentage (41.1).

The Hokies enter 10-3, with losses to top-ranked Syracuse, at Minnesota and against Kansas State.

The Cowboys have lost three of four to fall to 7-5. They do own a 38-game non-conference home winning streak, the third-longest in school history. But that streak ends here.

            Pick: Virginia Tech

Utah Utes at Colorado Buffaloes (-16.5, 133)

Coming off a 92-34 destruction of New Orleans on Wednesday, the Buffaloes are brimming with confidence heading into their Pac-12 opener against Utah.

Carlon Brown’s 18 points led five players in double figures as Colorado (8-4) won its third straight and posted its largest margin of victory since the 2005-06 season. Brown played three years at Utah before transferring in the summer of 2010, so he’ll be extra motivated for this one.

The Utes (3-7) are one of the worst offensive teams around, ranking 324th in scoring (58.8) and 296th in 3-point shooting percentage (29.6). And they allow opponents to shoot 47.5 percent, which ranks 320th.

In addition, two starting guards have been unable to practice fully. Chris Hines is still nursing the broken bone in his left thumb, and guard Cedric Martin is dealing with plantar fasciitis.

            Pick: Colorado

Hockey Night In Canada: NHL betting preview
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Maple Leafs at Winnipeg Jets (-127, 5.5)

The race at the bottom of the Eastern Conference playoff bracket figures to be a dandy from here on out, and -- health permitting -- the Jets and Maple Leafs stand to be in that mix. While we still have plenty of hockey left before the second season begins, points are precious and these are two big ones sitting out there for one of these clubs.

                A power-less play

Surging forward Joffrey Lupul scored his 17th goal of the season in the Maple Leafs' 4-3 overtime loss to Carolina Thursday, but he was one of few offensive bright spots. Even though it snared seven power-play opportunities against the lowly Hurricanes, Toronto came up short on all of them.

Phil Kessel had his 23rd assist and James Reimer made 30 saves, but if Toronto is going to struggle that much with the man advantage, perhaps the Maple Leafs should ask if they can decline penalties next time.

Battered and bruised, but battling on

There are healthier teams in the East playoff jumble than the Jets, but it hasn't slowed their production. On Thursday, Winnipeg outlasted Los Angeles 1-0 for the Jets' second win in three nights, and fourth in the last five tries. And they've done so, all while being shorthanded.

Against the Kings, Dustin Byfuglien missed his second straight game because of an undisclosed lower body injury. And center Bryan Little missed his fifth consecutive game with a lower body injury.

                Road woes

Perhaps a change in time zones will do Toronto some good, and maybe it’s also good that the calendar is about to change, because it’s been one, long struggle for the Maple Leafs on the road this month.

The loss in Carolina Thursday was the Maple Leafs’ fifth away from home in December, their second consecutive and their fourth in the last five tries. They’ve stayed afloat thanks to some home victories, but the Jets have to be feeling fortunate that they will play host to a team that has allowed nine goals in its last two contests away from the Air Canada Centre. In fact, in those five road losses, the Maple Leafs have allowed 22 goals combined.

                History

At the Air Canada Centre on Oct. 19, in the first meeting between the Maple Leafs and the new Jets, Toronto out-slugged Winnipeg, 4-3, in a shootout. Dating back to games against Atlanta, the over has hit in four of the last five games. Yet, the Jets have posted five consecutive unders overall.

Vancouver Canucks at Los Angeles Kings (120, 5)

Los Angeles has found new life under new coach Darryl Sutter and is right back in, not only the Western Conference playoff shuffle, the Kings are also alive and well in the fight for the Pacific Division title with San Jose. Vancouver, meanwhile, has been in the mix all season long and is playing as if it has every intention of defending its conference crown.

                Darryl delivers

The Kings ran out of steam against Winnipeg Thursday, but it was hardly deflating. After all, under Sutter, Los Angeles is 3-0-2 and the only team they played in that stretch not in postseason contention was Anaheim.

The Kings upended surging Chicago 2-0 Wednesday, getting goals from Trent Hunter and Jarret Stoll along the way. And, believe it or not, it was the Kings' first win against the Blackhawks in seven tries - a span dating back to December 2007.

                Twin engines

The Sedin twins are on quite a run and it makes perfect sense that when they score, Vancouver wins.

In a 5-2 victory over scuffling Anaheim Thursday, Daniel scored two goals and Henrik had a goal and two assists, as they registered points together in the same game for the fourth time. Vancouver's record when that happens - 3-1.

The numbers are starting to pile up for them individually, which is also a good thing for the Canucks. Daniel now has 17 goals and Henrik has 35 assists.

Not so much of an advantage

Sutter or no Sutter, you can add the Kings to the list of teams stumbling on the power play.

While it hasn’t cost them in games under the new leadership, eventually numbers like they threw up Thursday are going to hurt this team’s playoff push. Against, the Jets, the Kings missed on five power plays, including a two-man advantage for 1:52 of the second period.

Sutter’s working on it and this is a unit still in progress. Especially considering the Kings lost Simon Gagne to the injured list because of an undisclosed upper body injury Wednesday.

But you can’t hide from the truth: Los Angeles has just four power-play goals in its last 17 games.

                History

Vancouver has won six of the last eight meetings in this series, including a 3-2 victory on Nov. 10. The rivalry is riding a five-game over-less streak, including four unders in that stretch. The Canucks enter the game having won three in a row and six of the last seven.

Ice picks: Saturday's best NHL bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Dallas Stars (150, 5.5)

The red-hot Bruins have won seven straight, outscoring opponents by an incredible 32-8 margin. The defending Cup champs lead the NHL in goals scored and fewest goals allowed.

They won 10 straight in November and the way they’re playing, it looks like they’ll match that soon.

“We're playing with a lot of desperation, a lot of jump," captain Zdeno Chara said. "We're capitalizing on chances we're creating and we're just taking what's given to us."

Goalies Tim Thomas and Ruukka Rask have been dominant, another bad sign for Dallas. The Stars are trying to shake off a 4-1 home loss to Columbus in which they went 0 for 3 on the power play.

Dallas, which has lost four of six, saw captain Brenden Morrow leave Thursday’s game after he got hit by a puck in the knee. His status for the game is uncertain.

                  Pick: Bruins

Colorado Avalanche at Anaheim Ducks (-117, 5.5)

The Avs are 3-13 in their last 16 visits to Anaheim, and they’re 10-25 in their last 35 road games.

The Ducks have won six straight in the series and nine of the last 10.

Colorado likely will be without forward Matt Duchene, who underwent an MRI on his injured knee Friday. Duchene got hurt Thursday night during Colorado’s 3-2 win over Phoenix.

Duchene appeared to get his right skate caught in a rut while making a hit.

                  Pick: Ducks

Pick 'n' roll: Saturday's best NBA bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Lakers (-5.5, 198.5)

The Lakers survived Andrew Bynum’s suspension, going 2-2 in his absence. They cruised past the Knicks 99-82 on Thursday thanks to Kobe Bryant’s 28 points on 10-of-17 shooting

Bryant said the innovative knee procedure he had in Germany after last season made a big difference, calling his knee “about 95% better, if not to say 100.”

The Nuggets went 4 of 20 from 3-point range in a 111-102 loss in Portland on Thursday night, dropping them to 2-1.

But point guard Ty Lawson continues to look unstoppable. He had 35 points in the loss and is averaging 22.3 points and 4.0 steals. Los Angeles won’t be able to stop him either.

Denver is 4-1-1 ATS in its last six meetings with the Lakers in L.A.

                      Pick: Nuggets

Phoenix Suns at Oklahoma City Thunder (-13, 197.5)

When these teams get together, defense is an afterthought.

The over is 4-0 in the last four meetings, with these combined finals: 214, 240, 218, 223.

OKC’s Kevin Durant is pouring in 31.2 points per game and shooting 57.3 percent. The team ranks in the top eight in scoring, shooting percentage, 3-point shooting, and free throw shooting.

The Suns played Friday night in New Orleans, and are not likely to slow down the Thunder. They’ll have to score plenty to keep pace.

                      Pick: Over

                          Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- NFL referee Gene Steratore is working Seattle-Arizona game Sunday; he is also a Big East ref- he did West Virginia-Seton Hall Friday.

-- Sean Tuohy Jr, the little kid in The Blind Side, is now a senior in high school-- he has a basketball scholarship to Loyola, Md next season.

-- Seton Hall is 12-2 after pulling away from West Virginia 67-48; Hall has a very young team and has improved quickly this season.

-- All four bowl games stayed under total Friday, making under 10-8 so far this season, with 17 more left bowls to be played.

-- Dwyane Wade scored with 0:04.6 left as Miami Heat went to 4-0 with a 103-101 win over the Timberwolves in Minnesota.

-- Illinois was left with 7-man coaching staff after Ron Zook was fired; the four offensive coaches are threatening a boycott for Saturday's bowl against UCLA unless the school re-worked their contracts.

                          ***************

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind..........

                          13) There have been 12 Super Bowl-winning coaches who went on to coach another NFL team; seven of the 12 had losing records at their next stop, only two (its our quiz question today) made it back to a Super Bowl (neither won).

                          12) Surprisingly, only eight coaches who lost Super Bowls without winning one moved on to other jobs; of the seven, Don Shula/Dick Vermeil won titles in the new job- the other five all had losing records at their next job. The 8th one, John Fox, is 8-7 in his first year with his new team, the Broncos.

                          11) Five coaches led two teams to the Super Bowl; Dan Reeves is the only one of the five not to win with either team.

                          10) Last time the Bengals had consecutive winning seasons? 1975-77, they had three in a row.

                          9) Coming into this season, Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford had trouble staying on the field and had a 3-10 record as a starting QB in NFL; this year. he stayed healthier, and now he’s 13-15.

                          8) Aaron Rodgers doesn’t do lot of autograph shows, which is why a Wheaties box signed by him sold for $760 at a charity auction.

                          7) Bengals’ RB Cedric Benson earns a $250,000 bonus if he rushes for 84+ yards this week- that would kick in one of his incentive clauses.

                          6) I feel really old; Mary Tyler Moore turned 75 this week.

                          5) When was the last time conference play in college hoop started with the SEC more highly rated than the ACC?

                          4) Pitt released freshman center Khem Birch to transfer to wherever place he wanted, as long as that place isn’t Missouri—he is blocked from getting a scholarship there.

That means we need a Pitt-Missouri game soon…..lol

                          3) Four smallest TV markets in NFL? Jacksonville (#49), Buffalo (51), New Orleans (52), Green Bay (71). Albany is #58.

                          2) Its ironic that the Colts won’t bench starters to lose Sunday, since they benched starters to sabotage their perfect season two years ago, saying it took pressure off the team and reduced the chance of a damaging injury. The quickest way for Indy to get back to a Super Bowl is to hit a bonanza of draft picks, which drafting/trading Andrew Luck would provide.

                          1) In 1997-98, the Colts went 6-26, then drafted Peyton Manning; they won 10+ games in 11 of last 13 years, so don’t tell me losing to get a franchise QB isn’t worth it. In this case, the rights to the franchise QB will be traded to someone who will pay a king’s ransom, which will provide the draft picks to hopefully help replenish the depleted talent pool of either the Colts/Rams. In some cases, losing really does help. Unless your franchise QB turns out to be Ryan Leaf; then, then you get to repeat the same process three years later.
