Monday's betting tips: Favorite flounders in Saints-Falcons games

    Who’s hot

NFL: Atlanta is 8-2 ATS in its last 10 December games.

NBA: Houston is 7-2 ATS in its last nine games in Orlando.

NBA: The over is 22-6 in the last 28 Lakers-Kings meetings.

NHL: Vancouver is 12-4 in its last 16 games.

NHL: The under is 8-3 in Buffalo’s last 11 games.

    Who’s not

NFL: The favorite is 0-5 ATS in the last five Falcons-Saints games.

NBA: Detroit is 3-9 ATS in its last 12 games vs. Indiana.

NBA: The under is 0-7 in the last seven Hornets-Suns games in Phoenix.

NHL: The Ducks are 5-17 in their last 22 games vs. winning teams.

NHL: The Red Wings are 2-5 in their last seven road games.

    Key stat

17 – That’s how many catches Roddy White has made over the past two games. Those grabs have produced 219 yards and 3 TDs. White is looking to atone for a weak performance against the Saints back on Nov. 13, when his critical drop led to an interception. White finished with four catches for 62 yards. The Falcons are 6.5-point road underdogs on Monday night.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Nuggets C Nene (back, hamstring) looks ready to play in Monday’s game at Dallas, according to Denver beat writers. Nene, who practiced over the weekend, led the team in points (14.5), rebounding (7.6), shooting percentage (61.5) and blocks (1.0) last season. It is Denver’s season opener, while the defending champion Mavs will be playing for the second straight day.

    Game of the Day

Atlanta Falcons at New Orleans Saints (-6.5, 52)

    Notable quotable

"We're peaking at the right time. I'm talking about jelling as far as a team - offense, defense, special teams." -- Saints LB Jonathan Vilma. New Orleans, riding a six-game win streak, is laying 6.5 points at home against NFC South rival Atlanta.

    Tips and notes

The Maple Leafs extended coach Ron Wilson’s contract, confident he has the team headed back to the playoffs after a six-year absence. Wilson is the winningest active NHL coach with 637 victories. He’s in his fourth season with Toronto. Heading into Monday’s action, the Leafs are 18-13-4, good for second in the Northeast Division and sixth in the Eastern Conference.

Paul Pierce missed the Celtics’ season-opening loss at New York with a bruised right heel, and is day-to-day. He’ll accompany the team on its road trip to Miami and New Orleans, but was unsure if he’d practice Monday. “I’ll just wake up and see how it feels,” he said. “It's been improving, week by week. If it was a regular bruise, it'd be a couple days. But it's a bone bruise on a place where I have to walk every day and have to apply pressure every day just by walking. Maybe it slows down the healing process."

Illinois’ struggling offense took another hit when leading rusher Jason Ford (600 yards, 7 TDs) was declared academically ineligible for the Dec. 31 Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl against UCLA. The Illini are 2.5-point favorites in a matchup of non-winning teams. Illinois is 6-6, UCLA 6-7.

Sunday’s Cowboys-Giants battle for the NFC East title has been moved from 1 p.m. ET on FOX to 8:20 p.m. on NBC as part of the league’s flex scheduling. Also, the Ravens-Bengals and Steelers-Browns games have been moved to 4:15 p.m. ET. Baltimore can win the AFC North and a first-round playoff bye with a win, while Cincy would clinch the AFC’s No. 6 seed by winning. If the Bengals win, Pittsburgh would take the AFC North by beating Cleveland.

Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL betting trends
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

        HOT TEAM: Chicago Blackhawks

The Blackhawks have a tendency to rack up ridiculous streaks, then they come back to earth a bit, only to do it all over again. So be careful with this bunch, but if you can handle the roller-coaster ride, boy is Chicago a talented team to wager on.

Veteran forward Marian Hossa has been driving the train of late. He had an assist in last Wednesday's 5-1 win over the Canadiens, pushing his point streak to seven games. He had four goals and 12 points in that span, and has led Chicago to eight victories this month. Heading into Monday's game versus Columbus, the Blackhawks had won five of their last six, and had scored at least four goals in six December games.

Jonathan Toews scored his 20th goal in the win over Montreal, and Chicago emerged from the Christmas break with four players -- Hossa (38), Toews (37), Patrick Sharp (36) and Patrick Kane (34) -- nearing 40 points. They open Monday's action with 48 points, three more than the rest of the league, and Windy City residents are truly starting to believe that the Stanley Cup could be headed back to their town for the second time in three years.

        COLD TEAM: Anaheim Ducks

A lot of the focus in Southern California has been on the Kings and their new coach, Darryl Sutter, as they try to creep back into the crowded Western Conference playoff race. But the best fade play out there, still, is the Kings' neighbor.

Indeed, Anaheim, under the direction of new coach Bruce Boudreau, has not been able to turn the corner and continues to wallow at the bottom of the conference. The Ducks lost to Los Angeles, 3-2, in a shootout on Thursday, dropping them to 2-6-2 under Boudreau.

They come out of the Christmas break trying to break a four-game skid. They have eight total defeats in December, and along with the Flames are the only teams not to have scored a short-handed goal.

Teemu Selanne, with 11 goals and 35 points, has been tremendous, and just keeps on going. But when a player who was born in 1970 is your best, you're going to be in trouble, right?

        OVER PLAY: New Jersey Devils

After an uncharacteristic year out of the playoffs -- their first since 1996 -- the Devils are back in the Eastern Conference postseason mix this season as one of the bottom-tier teams. If they hope to stay above the line, they'll need to ride their offense because their defense and goaltending -- believe it or not -- just isn’t there anymore.

What that means for bettors, is overs ... plenty of them. As strange as it sounds, considering we’re talking about a franchise that won Stanley Cups with a slow-it-down, grind-it-out, neutral-zone-trap approach, New Jersey has easily become one of the better over buys out there. Wednesday’s 4-3 shootout victory over Washington pushed an underless streak to six games (4-0-2) and was a snapshot of what this team is now. With sharpshooters like Zach Parise (28 points) and Ilya Kovalchuk (27), the Devils raced out to a 3-0 lead, only to blow every ounce of it, forcing the extra session.

New Jersey games have topped five goals seven times in December, and the Devils have scored four or more on their own five times this month. Veteran forward Patrik Elias, who will end his career as the franchise leader in most every offensive category, has 13 goals and 30 points and shows no signs of letup. On the other end, when a Hall-of-Fame lock like goaltender Martin Brodeur has nine losses and a 3.06 goals-against average, you know times have changed.

        UNDER PLAY: Winnipeg Jets

There were two ways to look at the Jets as the season began, with regards to totals. Either the rigors of travel were going to lead to sloppy, up-and-down games, or perhaps, when mileage fatigue set in, goals would become a priority, and tight games would ensue.

The latter has been the case lately. While they have a few players who are getting close -- Evander Kane (26), Blake Wheeler (25) and Dustin Byfuglien (24) -- the Jets still don't have anyone with 30 points. In their last six games, five have gone under. They entered the Christmas break on a three-game under streak, and have only scored five goals in a game once this month.

It hasn’t hurt them in the standings, of course, as Winnipeg -- with seven wins in December -- is surprisingly still hanging around in the Eastern Conference playoff race. But after some rock ‘em-sock ‘em games to open the year, the Jets have evened out their over-under record (17-17-1), and more unders appear to be on the way.

        Surveying the schedule:

** The league gave the Flyers a little reprieve as they head into final preparations for the Winter Classic. With the outdoor date versus the Rangers set for next Monday, Philadelphia only has to tackle two games this week, and the travel is not bad. The Flyers will play at Tampa Bay on Tuesday, and at Pittsburgh on Thursday.

** Give credit to new coach Ken Hitchcock for turning the Blues around so quickly. But this week will be a tough test for St. Louis with two sets of back-to-back games, on Monday-Tuesday, and Friday-Saturday. The contests are not easy. The first double dip is against Dallas and Detroit, and the latter features Nashville and Detroit. We'll know a lot more about the Blues a week from now.

Ice picks: Monday's best NHL bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colorado Avalanche at Minnesota Wild (-135, 5)

The Wild emerge from Christmas break trying to break an 0-4-2 skid. They’ve scored one or zero goals in five of their last six.

Colorado, meanwhile, is coming off a 4-0-0 homestand that pushed the Avalanche over .500 for the first time since Nov. 10.

But there are two big factors working in Minnesota’s favor Monday.

C Mikko Koivu, the team’s leading scorer, expects to return from a leg injury that has kept him out since Dec. 14. The Wild captain poured in 18 points in 14 games before the injury.

In addition, the Avs don’t travel well lately. They have not won on the road since a 5-4 shootout victory at Chicago on Oct. 22.

          Pick: Wild

Phoenix Coyotes at Los Angeles Kings (-140, 5)

These teams have combined for 13 goals in their last four meetings, with no game producing more than five goals.

The Coyotes rank 18th in scoring (2.6) and 27th on the power play (13.5 percent). The Kings are even less potent, ranking 30th in scoring (2.1).

In its last 10 games, L.A. hasn’t scored more than two goals in regulation. But the Kings are stout defensively, allowing an average of 2.3 goals and posting four shutouts. Jonathan Quick ranks eighth in the league with a 2.13 GAA.

The under is 7-1-1 in the Kings’ last nine home games, and 3-0-2 in the teams’ last five meetings in Los Angeles.

          Pick: Under

Pick 'n' roll: Monday's best NBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Bucks at Charlotte Bobcats (1, 180.5)

The Bobcats will unveil their new-look backcourt, with UConn’s Kemba Walker joining an improved D.J. Augustin.

Team owner Michael Jordan “looked at Kemba and saw himself,” coach Paul Silas said. “Mike said, ‘This guy has it.’ He said if he can lead (Connecticut) to the championship then he has what I have - and that’s the determination to do it.”

Charlotte, coming off a 34-48 season, also added Corey Maggette in hopes of bolstering an offense that ranked 29th last season.

Milwaukee was even worse offensively last season, averaging an NBA-low 91.9 points and shooting a league-worst 43 percent. But with Stephen Jackson joining Brandon Jennings and Andrew Bogut, the Bucks believe they can get back to the playoffs.

The home team has won the last 10 meetings in this series, going 7-2-1 ATS.

            Pick: Bobcats

Memphis Grizzlies at San Antonio Spurs (-5.5, 196)

This is a rematch of last season’s surprising first-round playoff series. Memphis, the No. 8 seed, knocked off top-seeded San Antonio in six games.

Those Grizzlies took Oklahoma City to seven games in the next round without Rudy Gay (19.8 ppg), who is back from his shoulder injury.

Zach Randolph, 30, averaged 20.1 points and 12.2 rebounds and is the oldest regular contributor. Marc Gasol, Gay, O.J. Mayo and Mike Conley are all 26 or younger.

Given their age, the Spurs could benefit from the shortened season. But Tim Duncan is coming off career lows in scoring (13.4) and rebounding (8.9), and San Antonio didn’t make any dramatic moves.

The Spurs will again rely on Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker to carry the offense. Unless first-round pick Kawhi Leonard can make a big impact, the Spurs’ best days are likely behind them.

Memphis is 12-3-1 ATS in its last 16 meetings with San Antonio.

            Pick: Grizzlies

                Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Why does TV show us celebrities during NBA games? Who cares? All of us know John McEnroe and Spike Lee are really rich. Terrific.

-- Bulls missed 17 of first 18 shots in 4th quarter, still rallied to beat the Lakers at Staples Center, 88-87. Lakers will miss Lamar Odom.

-- Speaking of Odom, he got tossed from his first game with Dallas in third quarter with 5:05 left. Not the greatest of beginnings.

-- Clippers outscored Golden State 64-43 in second half, ruining Mark Jackson's coaching debut with the Warriors, 105-86. As long as Paul and Griffin stay healthy, Clippers are going to be very good.

-- Rodgers was sharp in Green Bay's 35-21 win over the fading Bears, who at least got better QB play from McCown than they head been getting from Hanie, the other backup. Fifth straight loss for Chicago.

-- Kansas State methodically dismantled Long Beach State 77-60 to win the Diamond Head tourney in Hawai'i. K-State is physically tough.

                ****************

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Things to look for in 2012.........

                13) If Eldrick Woods ever dated Kim Kardashian, entire Internet would explode somewhere over Saskatchewan and all of North America would be littered with debris from millions of words colliding in cyberspace. This needs to happen, maybe in late May or June, just to liven things up a bit. They could be married and divorced before football season starts.

                12) If Colts lose in Jacksonville Sunday, will they give Peyton Manning his $28M roster bonus in March, or will they give him his walking papers and move ahead with Andrew Luck as their QB of the future? Manning is the best Colts’ QB since Johnny Unitas, but even Johnny U finished his career as a Charger.

                11) Milwaukee Brewers drew 3,071,373 fans to Miller Park LY, third time in four years they’ve top 3M fans; they’ve already sold 1M+ tickets for 2012, first time they’ve topped the million mark before Christmas. But how many tickets will they sell during the season next year with Prince Fielder likely gone and Ryan Braun done for the first 50 games? Hard to believe they’ll have a very good team.

                10) The NBA season is going to be interesting, because the short training camp makes the season a work in progress for all 30 teams. Its going to take time for ome teams to develop teamwork/chemistry but with so many games in a shorter period, some teams will get buried early on.

                9) So Urban Meyer quit the Florida Gators to spend more time with his family, then signed on with Ohio State less than a year later? Does this mean his family doesn’t like hanging out with him?

                8) VCU making the Final Four last spring quieted any objections people had about teams #61-68 playing an extra game in the NCAA basketball tournament; will anyone make a similar run this spring? I’m thinking we’re understating what a terrific accomplishment that was.

                7) Will my St Louis Rams make any coaching changes? You can make the (shaky) argument that because of last spring’s lockout, teams didn’t get a chance to fully implement their plans for this year (of course, Carolina has been improved with rookie coach/rookie QB). Its going to be very disappointing if no heads roll at Rams Park, but its not my money they’d be burning by purging the culprits.

                6) How many NBA players will play in all 66 of their team’s games? By the way, if Grant Hill makes it through another season healthy, the Miami Marlins have to pay big money to steal away Suns’ trainers and assign them to Jose Reyes’ hamstrings. And you think I’m kidding.

                5) Pardon me for babbling out loud here, but who the hell is going to play 1B for my fantasy team until Ryan Howard's achilles tendon heals? It'd be nice if someone other than Seattle signed Prince Fielder, so Mike Carp would be guaranteed a spot in the lineup every day.

                4) I’d like to see the NCAA simplify their rule book in 2012 and only worry about serious offenses, not ticky-tack stuff about hosting recruits at the coach’s house and stuff like that. Bruce Pearl got fired for lying to the NCAA about some stupid rule that shouldn’t even be a rule. I know lying isn’t good, but come on, think about things that have come to light since Pearl got fired. He looks like a freakin’ saint, by comparison.

                3) Someone is going to be really smart and buy the Dodgers; following Frank McCourt as owner is as easy a duty as following Mike Singletary as coach of the 49ers—its always good to follow an incompetent.

                2) Coolest Christmas present I've seen this year: guy I know was given an authentic Shane Falco #16 Washington Sentinel jersey, like the one Keanu Reeves wore in The Replacements. Excellent. Not sure where they got it.

                1) I hope all of you have a happy and healthy 2012; none of us are guaranteed anything in this life, so we need to make the most of the time we have. Make this year your best one yet!!!!
