    2011-12 Los Angeles Clippers Preview

(Sports Network) - A race to relevance that spanned from Western New York to Southern California and took close to 42 years finally crossed the finish line earlier this month when the Clippers acquired star point guard Chris Paul from the New Orleans Hornets.

LA's "other" franchise began its NBA odyssey in Buffalo back in 1970 as one of three expansion teams for the '70-71 season. The then- Braves played their home games at the old Memorial Auditorium (The Aud) and even snuck across the border now and again for a few games at the famed Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto.

The team's first head coach was Hall of Famer Dolph Schayes and its initial "star" players were forgettable names like Bob Kauffman and Don May until the greatest Brave of them all laced them up -- Bob McAdoo. A scoring machine, McAdoo led the Braves to their first playoff appearance in 1973-74 when he averaged 30.6 points per game and 15.1 rebounds.

But McAdoo's brilliance couldn't generate enough fan interest in Buffalo and the franchise found its way to San Diego in 1978-79 when John Brown, the franchise's owner, and Irv Levin, a Southern California native who owned the Celtics, negotiated a deal in which the owners would swap franchises, with Brown taking control of the Celtics and Levin getting the Braves with the intent of moving West.

By the '81-82 campaign Levin tapped out and sold the franchise to Los Angeles- area real estate mogul Donald Sterling, who eventually moved the team to Hollywood in 1984.

Over their tortured existence the Clippers franchise has had a total of just six winning seasons. In their 27 seasons in Los Angeles, the Clips have reached the postseason just four times and have won fewer than 20 games on six occasions. Under Sterling's often puzzling stewardship, the club has been regarded as one of the yardsticks for futility, not just in the NBA but for all of professional sports.

And it certainly doesn't help that they share the same building with the Lakers -- one of the most successful and storied franchises in pro sports history.

The worm began to turn, however, on May 19, 2009 when the Clippers won the Draft Lottery and were awarded the first overall pick, a selection that turned out to be Blake Griffin.

Although they had to wait a year for Griffin, who broke his kneecap during the team's final preseason game in what should have been his rookie year, the Clippers finally found a foundation to build upon. Not only was Blake a star on the court -- he had the type of personality to transcend the game, garnering endorsement deals with heavyweights like Kia, Subway and AT&T.

That said, Griffin needed someone to play Robin to his Batman and that finally arrived when the Paul soap opera came to a conclusion.

The 26-year-old CP3, a four-time All-Star and one of the two or three best point guards in the game, had requested a trade soon after the five-month lockout came to an end.

In fact, the league had already nixed high-profile deals put together by both the Lakers and Clippers before finally accepting an offer which sent promising guard Eric Gordon, former All-Star center Chris Kaman and second-year forward Al-Farouq Aminu along with Minnesota's unprotected 2012 first-round pick back to the Big Easy.

"It's been an emotional roller coaster. I'm excited to finally be here and get this thing going," Paul said. "I'm excited to bring a championship here to LA in a Clippers uniform."

Yep, the Clippers actually trumped the Lakers. The red-headed step-child stuck it to the kid born with the silver spoon in his mouth. For once Kobe and Company were the ones stomping their feet, focusing on the NBA's admittedly stained credibility in this process.

Others couldn't help focusing on the new-look Clips.

"(The Clippers) are going to be very exciting to watch, they aren't the little brother anymore," former Lakers center Shaquille O'Neal said. "They are all grown up and ready to get some respect now."

2010-11 Results: 32-50, fourth in Pacific; Missed Playoffs

ADDITIONS: G Chris Paul, G Chauncey Billups, F Caron Butler, Travis Leslie.

    PROJECTED STARTING FIVE:

PG- Chris Paul SG- Chauncey Billups SF- Caron Butler PF- Blake Griffin C- DeAndre Jordan

KEY RESERVES: G Eric Bledsoe; G Randy Foye; F Ryan Gomes, G Moe Williams, F Reggie Evans

FRONTCOURT: The 6-foot-10, 250-pound Griffin was the only player in the NBA to average 20-plus points, 12-plus rebounds and 3-plus assists last season. He combines a rare work ethic with outstanding athleticism, something that is synonymous with virtually all of the greats that have ever played the game. About the only thing missing from the Oklahoma City product's game is a mid- range jumper, a skill that could make him virtually unstoppable.

The raw, super athletic DeAndre Jordan returns at center after the Clippers matched an offer sheet put together by division rival Golden State. A natural shot-blocker, Jordan finished third in the league in dunks last season and shot an amazing 68.6 percent from the floor.

Caron Butler, who has averaged 16.6 points in nine pro seasons, arrives as a free agent from Dallas after missing most of last season with knee problems. When healthy the former All-Star is a tough, well-rounded player that can offer help at both ends of the floor.

BACKCOURT: Paul is an exceptionally gifted player on both offense and defense. A natural playmaker, CP3 will feels more than comfortable setting up his teammates and sacrificing his offense. That said, when things aren't clicking, Paul has the offensive skills to take over a game at any time. In his first preseason action as a Clip, Paul, who is not even in shape yet, flashed what he is capable of when he scored 17 points, dished out nine assists, grabbed seven rebounds and had five steals against the Lakers.

Before acquiring Paul the Clips had already picked up veteran Chauncey Billups off amnesty waivers with the intent of handing him the keys to the young team. Instead "Mr. Big Shot" will now move off the ball and give Vinny Del Negro a playoff-tested option down the stretch of games. Billups was not happy when he was "amnestied," and is not used to playing off the ball but he has now calmed down and understands he has a chance to win here.

"I contemplated retirement," Billups told the Orange County Register. "But I think I've got a lot of career left. When I do go out, I want to go out gracefully, and to go out winning."

Whether Billups' defense against other two guards around the league holds up is debatable but having him on the floor in the final few minutes of a tight game is always comforting.

BENCH: The bench is thin up front with forward Ryan Gomes the only proven commodity. Gomes, however, is just a pedestrian guy with a solid jumper. The wild card is Trey Thompkins, the 6-foot-10 rookie from Georgia, that could be a game-changer at the defensive end if he develops.

Veteran rebounder Reggie Evans, a high-energy bruiser that's a non-entity on the offensive end was also signed late.

The backcourt is a little stronger with veteran guards Mo Williams and Randy Foye along with promising second-year man Eric Bledsoe. In fact, it wouldn't be surprising if the Clippers attempted to shop Williams, another former All- Star, with the intent of adding depth up front.

COACHING: Del Negro took the Bulls to the playoffs in each of his two seasons there and improved the Clippers, albeit by a scant three games last season. This will be a true test for him. With Paul on hand, there are no more excuses in LA. It's playoffs or bust.

OUTLOOK: Eventually David Stern's blatant usurping of impotent New Orleans general manager Dell Demps will be a footnote to history. The fact that Paul could and probably should have been wearing purple and gold and getting ready to form one of the greatest backcourts in league history with Bryant will fade into the background. Instead he's part of a new dynamic duo with Griffin and hoping to bring yet another championship to Los Angeles, one that would be truly historic -- the Clippers' first.

"I can't believe I am saying this -- there is a legitimate question now as to who is the best team in LA," TNT analyst and NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley added. "The Clippers have all this young talent and now they have a leader in Chris Paul. He is a great leader. He is going to force them to mature quicker. It is a fair and legitimate question and you just can't say the Lakers. It's a fair question, who's the best team in LA, and it might be the Clippers."

      2011-12 Golden State Warriors Preview

(Sports Network) - The latest Bay Area basketball reboot kicks off under the auspices of Mark Jackson this season with the highly-touted ex-point guard hoping to turn a team that finished 10 games under .500 last season into a playoff contender.

There is plenty of skill on hand in Golden State with Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry in the backcourt along with rebounding machine David Lee up front.

Jackson, however, was brought in to teach this team to play defense and show toughness along with discipline, things that have been sorely lacking in a Don Nelson/Keith Smart created culture.

Now it's all about Jackson's famous defensive phrase as an analyst in Oakland this season. It's all about "Hand Down Man Down."

To that end the team flirted with bringing in Clippers center DeAndre Jordan and did sign the shot-blocking machine to a four-year, $40 million dollar offer sheet before LA eventually matched. Plan B turned out to be another solid low post defender in Kwame Brown.

If Brown can erase some of the perimeter defense mistakes that are sure to be crop up since Golden State has so many offensive-minded players dotting the roster, Jackson and the Warriors may point things toward the postseason sooner rather than later.

Things got a little more complicated, however, when a former team employee named Erika Smith sued Ellis, claiming he "sexually harassed, intimidated and stalked" her for several months beginning last year. In addition, Smith is also suing the Warriors for failure to prevent harassment, retaliation, wrongful termination and intentional infliction of distress, among other charges.

Rick Welts, Golden State's president and CEO, quickly defended his organization while at the same time paying deference to the seriousness of the charges.

"The Golden State Warriors take seriously any allegations of harassment," Welts said in a statement. "Let me make this extremely clear: The Warriors strive every day to provide a comfortable and professional work environment for all of our employees."

Welts then gave the Warriors spin:

"When we were made aware of a consensual relationship between Mr. Ellis and the Plaintiff, we did what an organization should do. We told both to stop -- promptly, directly and fairly. The Warriors have never taken any action against the Plaintiff for any inappropriate reason, and we deny the allegations she is making.

"We live in a litigious society in which lawsuits too frequently are driven by money and not the pursuit of justice. We will vigorously defend the reputation of the Warriors organization in the courts. We don't plan to make any further comment about the details of the case."

2010-11 Results: 36-46, third in Pacific; Missed playoffs.

ADDITIONS: G Klay Thompson, C Kwame Brown, F Jeremy Tyler, G Brandon Rush, G Charles Jenkins.

      PROJECTED STARTING FIVE:

PG- Monta Ellis SG- Stephen Curry SF- Dorell Wright PF- David Lee C- Kwame Brown

KEY RESERVES: F/C Ekpe Udoh, G Brandon Rush, C Andris Biedrins, G G Klay Thompson.

FRONTCOURT: Signed as a bit of a reclamation project by Bobcats owner Michael Jordan last season, Brown contributed 7.9 points and 6.8 rebounds per game along with sound low post defense in Charlotte. The Warriors are hoping for something similar from Brown this season and think his defensive presence can erase mistakes and open things up even further for Lee on the boards.

"If you looked at Kwame Brown like Chris Webber as a No. 1 overall pick, then you don't think of him as a solid basketball player," said NBA TV analyst Greg Anthony. "But if you look at Kwame Brown for what he is able and capable of doing, he's a nice acquisition because he can defend the rim. He's one of the best post-defenders in our league. That's the biggest weakness that Golden State has. His game is not about statistics, it is about impact."

Lee, of course, is an effort player with skill. One of the league's best pure rebounders and a more than capable finisher around the rim, Lee will be helped by having a legitimate big bodied defender next door.

Dorell Wright is the type of role player that will be expected to make open shots and bring defense on the perimeter every night, something ignored in these parts for far too long.

BACKCOURT: The Warriors have gone without a conventional lead guard and let the explosive Ellis handle the bulk of the point guard duties. Jackson, however, was as conventional as it got when he played so Ellis, who needs to play more consistent defense and become more of a leader, is seemingly always on the trading block. His personal situation certainly doesn't help his future prospects in Oakland.

Curry walked into the NBA as one of the best pure shooters in the game. He's a combo guard that can also handle the ball so Ellis and he will be virtually interchangeable at times. A nagging ankle injury could be a concern, however.

BENCH: At one time Latvian born Andris Biedrins was one of the league's underrated big men and a nightly double-double threat. He's never going to be a defensive intimidator but lingering ankle injuries have derailed Biedrins' progress at both ends. If healthy, Biedrins is a solid fit for an up-tempo offense that relies on a center's ability to move the ball. His free throw shooting, however, is miserable.

"I want him to make them, but at the end of the day, it's overrated," Jackson said of Biedrins' struggles from the charity stripe. "He's going to be at the foul line two or three times a game. Make or miss, how much does it matter if he's rebounding, if he's blocking shots, if he's finishing at the rim?"

The Warriors are really impressed by rookie Klay Thompson, the second best pure shooter in the 2011 draft behind Jimmer Fredette. He strikes me as a tweener, however -- not enough lateral quickness to handle twos at the defensive end and not enough strength to check threes.

Ekpe Udoh shot up the board in the final days of the 2010 draft but struck me as a bit of a reach by a troubled franchise lacking leadership at the time. Of course, any player with a defensive mindset is welcome in Oakland and Udoh has the wingspan of a 7-foot-4 player and could develop into an elite shot- blocker somewhere down the line.

The Warriors also picked up some much needed depth at shooting guard days before the season when they acquired Brandon Rush from the Indiana Pacers in exchange for forward Lou Amundson. The 6-foot-6 Rush, 26, appeared in 67 games (21 starts) for the Pacers last season, averaging 9.1 points and 3.2 rebounds and certainly helps fill a void.

COACHING: Jackson is an impressive person and anyone that has ever spent any time around him raves. That said, he's never coached before at any level and he's sure to have some growing pains. One thing is certain, however, Jackson brings a plan to an organization that has lacked one for years.

"When you talk about the Warriors, there was an unbelievable hire in Mark Jackson," NBA TV analyst Steve Smith said. "The Warriors have done a great job. The focus is on defense and to win championships that is what you have to do. He (Jackson) is bringing an element that has not been there in the past. When you start talking about winning in the playoffs - and winning a championship - you have to play a little defense. Maybe Kwame Brown is not Tyson Chandler but that is a good start for the Warriors to begin thinking with that (defensive) mindset."

OUTLOOK: Young legs may be the Warriors greatest strength, especially in this lockout-shortened 66-game season, heavy on back-to-back games. It's clear by the organization's coveting of players like Chris Paul, Nene and Jordan that Jackson would eventually like a more traditional point guard and defensive- minded club.

However, if he can mask his deficiencies now and get the most out of his young scorers the Warriors could make a run at one of the last playoffs spot in the West.

"You know, we got a great head coach, Mark Jackson. It's a new environment and we can just feel it," Ellis said. "We just have to take advantage of our schedule that we have. We have the first four home games here [in Oakland]. It's set for us to start off and really take advantage of the opportunity that we have."

Celtics-Knicks tip off NBA season Sunday

        BOSTON CELTICS

        at NEW YORK KNICKS

        Tip-off: Sunday, 12:05 p.m. EST
Line: New York -1, Total: 202

The NBA season kicks off with a battle between two classic rivals when Boston visits New York on Christmas Day.

There’s plenty of excitement surrounding the Knicks, who may have solved their defensive woes by signing C Tyson Chandler and will have a full season of SF Carmelo Anthony. But this is also a team with no point guard, and one that lost all eight of their match-ups against the Celtics SU last season. Age is a concern for Boston, but the C’s will obviously have fresh legs going into this one. They simply shouldn’t be underdogs against a team they dominated last year. BOSTON, which is 16-4 SU (14-6 ATS) in its past 20 trips to Madison Square Garden, is the pick.

The FoxSheets provide a coaching trend that supports the Celtics:

Doc Rivers is 38-19 ATS (66.7%, +17.1 Units) in road games vs. division opponents as the coach of BOSTON. The average score was BOSTON 101.3, OPPONENT 96.1 - (Rating = 1*).

The Knicks will get a boost on the defensive end from Chandler (10.1 PPG, 9.4 RPG with Dallas), who anchored the interior for the world champs last year. But in order to sign him they had to let go of their only proven point guard, Chauncey Billups. Toney Douglas (10.6 PPG), more of a combo guard and bench player, will likely handle most of the point guard duties while newly signed PG Baron Davis recovers from a back injury. And New York only had a short training camp to try and settle its chemistry issues. The Knicks never quite got it right after acquiring Anthony (26.3 PPG in 27 games with New York) at last year’s trade deadline. He and Amar’e Stoudemire (25.3 PPG, 8.2 RPG) are still learning how to co-exist.

The Celtics’ Big Three of SF Paul Pierce (18.9 PPG), PF Kevin Garnett (14.9 PPG, 8.9 RPG) and SG Ray Allen (16.5 PPG), plus PG Rajon Rondo (10.6 PPG, 11.2 APG) gives them as good a starting lineup as anyone in the NBA. But they never figured out how to replace the low-post physicality of C Kendrick Perkins, traded to Oklahoma City at last year’s trade deadline, and the main acquisition in that deal—SF Jeff Green (9.8 PPG in 26 games with Boston)—is now out for the year after a heart condition was revealed during preseason physicals. Gone is reliable second unit PF Glen Davis (11.7 PPG), replaced by PF Brandon Bass (11.2 PPG, 5.6 RPG for Orlando).

Heat-Mavericks play Finals rematch Christmas Day

          MIAMI HEAT

          at DALLAS MAVERICKS

          Tip-off: Sunday, 2:30 p.m. EST
          Line: Miami -3, Total: 193.5

It’s an NBA Finals rematch when the Heat travel to Dallas for a Christmas Day season opener.

It may seem like blasphemy for the Heat to be giving points on the road against the team that just beat them in last year’s NBA Finals. But you have to consider that the Mavs were significantly weakened by the free agent departures of C Tyson Chandler, sparkplug PG J.J. Barea and defensive instigator DeShawn Stevenson, all of whom were key in topping Miami last June. They added some impressive new faces, but there wasn’t much time to gel in a shortened training camp. Miami, meanwhile, returns the core of their 2010-11 team and added SF Shane Battier, one of the NBA’s top role players and a perfect complement to the Big Three. MIAMI is the pick to win and cover.

This FoxSheets coaching trend also sides with the Mavericks:

Rick Carlisle is 7-19 ATS (26.9%, -13.9 Units) in home games in December games as the coach of DALLAS. The average score was DALLAS 99.4, OPPONENT 96.4 - (Rating = 1*).

The Mavs did sweep Miami during the regular season last year, though both games took place before Christmas when the rebuilt Heat were still trying to find their way. The Mavs will obviously rely on the scoring of Dirk Nowitzki (23.0 PPG) and shooting of Jason Terry (15.8 PPG). PG Jason Kidd (8.2 APG) is now 38 years old, and he’s now backed up by the erratic Delonte West (5.6 PPG with Boston) and unproven Roddy Beaubois (8.4 PPG). With Chandler gone, C Brendan Haywood (5.2 RPG) will be asked to protect the basket, though he’s 32 and coming off a major hip injury. Lamar Odom (14.4 PPG, 8.7 RPG with the Lakers), a fine pick-up, and Vince Carter (14.0 PPG with Orlando and Phoenix), who doesn’t have much left in the tank, will be finding their way.

Miami’s Big Three of LeBron James (26.7 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 7.0 APG), Dwyane Wade (25.5 PPG, 6.4 RPG) and Chris Bosh (18.7 PPG, 8.3 RPG) will have some more reinforcements this year. Battier (7.6 PPG with Houston and Memphis) will be able to take some of the defensive burden away from them. Offensively, he’s made a career of hitting the all-important corner three. They’ll also have the luxury of C Udonis Haslem (8.0 PPG, 8.2 RPG), who played only 13 regular-season games last year, but will be an important low-post complement to Bosh. But the Heat will likely be without three-point specialist Mike Miller (hernia) for at least another month.

Lakers host Bulls on Christmas Day

            CHICAGO BULLS

            at LOS ANGELES LAKERS

            Tip-off: Sunday, 5:00 p.m. EST
Line: Los Angeles -2, Total: 187.5

Two of the NBA’s title favorites meet up in Los Angeles when the Lakers host Chicago for the teams’ season opener on Christmas Day.

The Lakers are a team in flux. After missing out on Chris Paul, they seem to have taken a step backwards heading into the season. They sent valuable role player Lamar Odom to Dallas in exchange for a trade exception that should help them down the line, but won’t help them in this opener. And with C Andrew Bynum suspended, Odom would have come in handy in this game. Chicago comes in at full strength, and even added veteran SG Richard Hamilton, who looked sharp in preseason play. Considering the Bulls were 25-16 ATS on the road during the regular season last year, and the Lakers were just 15-26 ATS at home (16-30 ATS including the postseason) a year ago, CHICAGO is the pick.

This FoxSheets trend also sides with the Bulls:

CHICAGO is 30-16 ATS (65.2%, +12.4 Units) when the line is +3 to -3 over the last 3 seasons. The average score was CHICAGO 97.9, OPPONENT 96.0.

The Lakers have some work to do to make up for the loss of Odom. PF Pau Gasol (18.8 PPG, 10.2 RPG), coming off a brutal postseason that landed him on the trade block, will have to handle the likes of Joakim Noah and Carlos Boozer inside. Gasol also might have to take on a more significant offensive role with Kobe Bryant (25.3 PPG) suffering from a torn ligament in his wrist.

The young Bulls should have plenty of energy for this one, and their defense (tops in the NBA in defensive efficiency last year) should carry them against Los Angeles. While reigning MVP PG Derrick Rose (25.0 PPG) seemed to fade a bit down the stretch, he should thrive against a Lakers team that, with Bynum out, has no one to protect the basket. Noah (10.4 RPG) and Boozer (17.5 PPG, 9.6 RPG) figure to control the interior, and SF Luol Deng (17.4 PPG) is capable of containing Bryant. The arrival of Hamilton (14.1 PPG with Detroit) just makes their second unit that much better.

Howard leads Magic into Oklahoma City Sunday

              ORLANDO MAGIC

              at OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER

              Tip-off: Sunday, 8:05 p.m. EST
Line: Oklahoma City -7.5, Total: 201.5

With Dwight Howard still wearing an Orlando uniform, the Magic will provide a major challenge when they visit Oklahoma City in the teams’ Christmas season opener.

There’s a sense of doom surrounding the Magic in light of Howard’s upcoming free agency. But for now they still have him. Howard will be key in protecting the basket against shoot-first PG Russell Westbrook, and he torched the Thunder on the offensive end last year (39.5 PPG and 16.5 RPG in two matchups). And while the Magic are streaky on the offensive end, they have the shooters to potentially hang with the Thunder. They averaged 117.5 PPG in their two meetings with Oklahoma City last season. ORLANDO is the pick.

The FoxSheets provide another trend working against the Thunder:

OKLAHOMA CITY is 9-25 ATS (26.5%, -18.5 Units) on Sunday games over the last 3 seasons. The average score was OKLAHOMA CITY 101.2, OPPONENT 100.8 - (Rating = 2*).

The Thunder have some chemistry issues to work out after last year’s collapse in the Western Conference finals. Westbrook (21.9 PPG, 8.2 APG) came under fire for his poor shot selection, as the team struggled to get the ball to scoring champion Kevin Durant (27.7 PPG) in the right spots. One plus for them this year will be a slimmed-down Kendrick Perkins (7.9 RPG in 17 games with Oklahoma City). He could be an effective counter against Howard, and will free up rising star PF Serge Ibaka (9.9 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 2.4 BPG) to do some scoring and shot-blocking.

While Howard (22.9 PPG, 14.1 RPG, 2.4 BPG) remains the focal point of the offense, Orlando relies heavily on the open threes they get off of him. SF Hedo Turkoglu (11.4 PPG, 40.4% from three-point land in 55 games with the Magic) may miss this game because of a hip injury, but they still have plenty of shooters in SG Jason Richardson (13.9 PPG, 38.4% from three), PG Jameer Nelson (13.1 PPG, 40.1% 3-pt FG), SG J.J. Redick (10.1 PPG, 39.7% on threes) and Ryan Anderson (10.6 PPG, 39.3% 3-pt FG). The departure of Gilbert Arenas is addition by subtraction, and the acquisition of PF Glen Davis (11.7 PPG with Boston) provides another offensive option inside the arc.

Paul's Clippers visit Golden State Christmas night

                LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS

                at GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS

                Tip-off: Sunday, 10:35 p.m. EST
Line: Los Angeles -2.5, Total: 215.5

The new-look Clippers start a new era when they travel to Oakland to play the Warriors on Christmas Day.

The Clippers made the biggest splash of the offseason by acquiring All-NBA PG Chris Paul, and his pick-and-roll potential with PF Blake Griffin is immense. However, the Warriors were surprisingly strong at home last year, going 26-15 SU (22-19 ATS). Considering the short offseason for a rebuilt Clippers team, they’re tough to bet on as a road favorite against a team that plays well at home. GOLDEN STATE is the pick.

The FoxSheets have a trend working against Los Angeles:

L.A. CLIPPERS are 32-48 ATS (40.0%, -20.8 Units) in road games over the last 3 seasons. The average score was L.A. CLIPPERS 95.9, OPPONENT 104.6.

The Clippers were awfully busy in the abbreviated free agency period. Along with acquiring Paul (15.9 PPG, 9.8 APG), they signed SF Caron Butler (15.0 PPG with Dallas) and G Chauncey Billups (16.8 PPG, 5.4 APG with Denver and New York), and retained C DeAndre Jordan (7.2 RPG, 1.8 BPG). But they’re far from a complete team. They have no frontcourt depth behind Jordan and Griffin (22.5 PPG, 12.1 RPG), and they’re a bad three-point shooting team who traded their best three-point shooter, Eric Gordon, in the Paul trade.

The Warriors will have a new head coach in former NBA point guard and ESPN analyst Mark Jackson. They figure to employ the same up-tempo style though. PG Stephen Curry (18.6 PPG, 5.8 APG, 44.2% from three) is questionable for Sunday because of an ankle injury, but they still have SG Monta Ellis (24.1 PPG, 5.6 APG) and SF Dorell Wright (16.4 PPG, 37.6% from three), and they drafted another long-range shooter in No. 11 overall pick Klay Thompson. Golden State shot 40.5% from three-point range at home a year ago.

The Warriors have been the NBA’s worst rebounding team each of the past two seasons. They added Kwame Brown (6.8 RPG with Charlotte) and will now have a healthy Ekpe Udoh, the No. 6 pick of the 2010 NBA Draft, to go along with PF David Lee (16.5 PPG, 9.8 RPG).
