Wednesday’s betting tips: Huge support for favored TCU

    Who’s hot

NCAAF: Louisiana Tech is riding a 7-0 run against the spread.

NHL: Detroit has won 16 of its last 21 overall.

NHL: The under is 13-1-1 in the last 15 meetings between Philadelphia and Dallas.

NCAAB: Texas is 9-4 against the number in its last 13 road games.

NBA: Boston is 6-1-1 against the spread in its last eight meetings with Toronto.

    Who’s not

NCAAF: TCU is 0-4 against the spread in its last four neutral-site games.

NHL: Montreal is 1-9 in its last 10 games as an underdog.

NHL: Carolina has won just seven of its last 28 games overall.

NCAAB: George Mason is 2-6 against the spread in its last eight.

NBA: The over is 2-6 in the last eight meetings between Minnesota and Milwaukee.

    Key stat

8.1 – Louisiana Tech Bulldogs quarterback Colby Cameron has helped boost his club’s scoring average 8.1 points per game since he took over starting duties five contests ago. The Bulldogs averaged 26.7 points before he moved up on the depth chart and 34.8 points since.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Andre Johnson, Houston Texans - Johnson has been ruled out of Thursday night's game against the Indianapolis Colts. It will be the third straight game missed by Johnson since he suffered a left hamstring injury against the Atlanta Falcons on Dec. 4. The standout wide receiver also missed six games earlier this season for a right hamstring injury that required surgery. Houston (10-4) has already wrapped up the AFC South title and trails the New England Patriots (11-3) and Baltimore Ravens (10-4) for the top two seeds and a first-round bye in the playoffs. Johnson has 31 catches for 471 yards and two touchdowns in six games this season. Oddsmakers have Houston set as a 5.5-point favorite.

    Game of the day

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs vs. Texas Christian Horned Frogs (-9.5, 56) – As of Tuesday evening, more than 72 percent of *********** Consensus bettors were supporting TCU.

    Notable quotable

"I think (the Colts are) feeling very good after what happened last week. You know, the Thursday night game gets a lot of attention. We know they'll play well. Like I said, our history in that building hasn't been very good, so we're going to have to go change that and play much better." – Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak on his team’s matchup with Indianapolis on Thursday evening. The Texans are set as 5.5-point favorites.

    Notes and tips

Boston Celtics forward Paul Pierce could be in jeopardy of missing the season opener against the New York Knicks on Christmas Day because of a heel injury. Pierce suffered the bruised heel in the Celtics' first practice and he been watching on the sidelines since. He will not play in Wednesday's preseason finale against the Toronto Raptors that has Boston set as a 5-point favorite. Coach Doc Rivers doesn't think the injury will have a lasting effect but believes Pierce will be limited in the early portion of the schedule. Boston plays three games in four nights to open the lockout-shortened campaign. Pierce averaged 18.9 points and 5.4 rebounds last season

San Jose Sharks right wing Martin Havlat will sit out at least one game with a lower body injury. Havlat injured his left leg while attempting to jump over the boards in Saturday's game against Edmonton. The San Jose Mercury News reported that Havlat was limping and using a walking stick to move around. Sharks coach Todd McLellan ruled Havlat out of Wednesday's matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The 30-year-old Havlat has two goals and 13 assists in 26 games.

North Carolina wide receiver Dwight Jones has been declared ineligible for the Independence Bowl. Jones found himself in trouble after allowing his name and photograph to be used for a party thrown by a family member in his hometown. North Carolina has applied to the NCAA for reinstatement following the secondary violation. A cease-and-desist letter has been sent by the school to the party promoters. Jones, a senior, has 79 catches for 1,119 yards and 11 touchdowns this season. The Tar Heels are set as 5-point underdogs against Missouri.

College funds: Wednesday's best NCAAB bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Texas Longhorns at North Carolina Tar Heels (-12, 154.5)

There’s no questioning the Tar Heels’ talent, but their focus is a work in progress.

North Carolina has dropped two of its last three against the spread and looked sluggish in its last game against Nicholls State before pulling away to cover the fat 38.5-point line.

"We knew he was very frustrated, especially at halftime," senior Tyler Zeller told reporters of coach Roy Williams. "He came in, and said a lot of things that were very true - something that we can't be that lax when we go out and play. We've got to be able to play with intensity."

The message didn’t get through until Williams benched his entire starting five in the second half. He put them back in with about 11 minutes left on the clock and they went on a 16-1 run to secure a 99-46 win.

The Longhorns are dealing with similar issues as they start three freshman and have dropped four of the six games that have seen a pointspread. This could be a learning experience for Texas against a refocused Tar Heels squad.

          Pick: Tar Heels

Cal Poly SLO Mustangs at DePaul Blue Demons (-2.5, 130)

DePaul has one more tune-up game before Big East play begins at the end of the month, and welcomes Cal Poly SLO to the Allstate Arena on Wednesday.

The Blue Demons have put together a strong showing despite some major injuries to the frontcourt. DePaul will be without 6-foot-9 forward Donnavan Kirk for an indefinite period due to back problems, and are without slasher Tony Freeland (shoulder) and freshman Montray Clemons (knee) for the season.

Those missing pieces haven’t stopped DePaul from producing its best start since the 2005-06 season. The Blue Demons are scoring a ton, delivering than 79 points per game behind the play of Cleveland Melvin, who is averaging 18.7.

The Mustangs have held teams to just 53.9 points per game so far this year, but they haven’t seen an offense like this yet.

          Pick: Over

            NHL

            Wednesday, December 21

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Lightning at San Jose Sharks (-180, 5.5)

When you travel as much as the San Jose Sharks do, you have to make the most of extended home stands.

That’s what they’re looking to do right now as they’re in the middle of a two-week stretch of sleeping in their own beds and it’s been so far so good. The Sharks have won their first two home games on this stretch after dropping Edmonton 3-2 Saturday.

They’ve been off since and used that time to put some work in on their special teams units, which desperately need some attention. The Sharks rank 30th (73.6 percent) on the penalty kill and 14th on the power play.

"I do think that when a power play comes for the other team, you hold your breath a little bit. I'll admit that," coach Todd McLellan told reporters. "But it shouldn't be that way, not with the group we have."

The Lightning are probably thinking the same thing. They sit 24th on the power play (15.2 percent) and 20th on the penalty kill (81.2 percent).

            Pick: Over

Detroit Red Wings at Vancouver Canucks (-115, 5.5)

The Vancouver Canucks have been on cruise control lately, winning 11 of their last 14 games. Many are attributing the hot stretch to some hot goaltending from Roberto Luongo after his cold start. He stopped all 33 shots he faced to record his first shutout of the year in a 4-0 win over Minnesota on Monday.

If he gets the call Wednesday, he’ll have to be just as sharp with the Red Wings in town. Detroit has scored 30 goals over its last six games as the third line of Danny Cleary, Darren Helm and Drew Miller continues to improve.

The Wings can usually count on its top two lines for production, but now the club’s third line is getting in on the act. Cleary has seven points in his last five, Helm has six in his last six, and Miller has three goals in the last two games – including Monday’s game-winner over Edmonton.

"We're doing things well, keeping it simple, going forward with the puck, not trying to do too much," Helm told reporters. "All three of us were kind of struggling for a while there ... put a few guys who are struggling together and good things start to happen."

            Pick: Red Wings

                Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Hawai'i hired 65-year old Norm Chow to his first head coaching job, which will be very interesting. Chow is a great offensive mind.

-- Marshall beat Florida International 20-10 in the Beef O'Brady Bowl; team with freshman QB beat the team with senior QB, so thats a little surprising. Marshall blocked a punt to set up the winning FG.

-- Top of Southern Conference is pretty good; Davidson beat Kansas in KC Monday, then Charleston lost 69-62 at Louisville last night, a game Cougars led with 3:30 to play. Two well-coached teams.

-- Butler is badly overscheduled; 5-7 Bulldogs lost 71-55 at Gonzaga and now they go to Stanford to lose again on Thursday. Oy.

-- New Jersey Devils have given up 10 shorthanded goals this season, most in the NHL. In only 33 games.

-- Georgia football coach Mark Richt paid staff out of his own pocket, which is a minor NCAA violation. Instead of patting the guy on his back for being a good person, he gets his wrist slapped. Outstanding.

                **************************

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

                13) Great win for LSU Monday night, beating Marquette 67-59 in game they trailed 13-0 early; it was first time the two teams met since the 1970 NIT, which was Pete Maravich’s last college game.

Trent Johnson is a good coach who won at Nevada/Stanford; it would be surprising if he doesn’t get the LSU program turned around.

                12) Was surprised how wildly enthusiastic some of the Chiefs were after they beat Green Bay Sunday; if you didn’t know better, you’d swear they were trying harder for Romeo Crennel than they did for the departed Todd Haley. Now that wouldn’t be very professional of them, would it?

                11) Divisional games in the NFL schedule: Week 15, only three. Week 16, 10 out of 16 games, then in Week 17, all 16 games are divisional rivalries.

Best reality TV ever would be to sit in on the meetings where they draw up next year's schedule over the winter.

                10) At one point, I thought that if Mike Martz coached him, Chuckles the Clown could play QB and pass for 250 yards with two TDs, but Caleb Hanie disproved that theory. The Hanie era isn’t going to be remembered fondly in Chicago. Some Bear fans might prefer the clown play QB.

Bears’ passing yards the last three weeks: 88-86-89. All losses.

                9) NFL needs to go back to the rule where they have the #3 emergency QB available to be put into games; otherwise, they’re going to wind up with a WR or TE playing QB in a playoff game- that makes the product look bad.

                8) My father/cousin are both Giant football fans, and they both hate Troy Aikman as a game analyst, saying he roots against the Giants because of his Dallas playing roots. Myself, I like Aikman as an analyst, while I’m not thrilled with Joe Buck on football, but I do enjoy listening to Aikman. Funny how everyone has different preferences for announcers.

                7) Raiders had 10+ accepted penalties in six of their last eight games.

                6) Jason Kubel got $15M to play leftfield for two years in Arizona; Snakes must’ve made some money LY, trading for Trevor Cahill and now signing Kubel. Putting Kubel in LF hurts them defensively.

                5) In their last three games, Seahawks outscored their opponents 65-17 in the second half. That’s a good sign. Seahawks have 119+ rushing yards in six of last seven games; I’m giving credit to OL coach/former Raider HC Tom Cable for improving their run game. Must be nice to root for a team with a good offensive line.

                4) Over the last five games, three teams with worst 3rd down defenses: 32) Giants 34-63, .540
                31) Chargers 33-69, .478
                30) Bucs 32-68, .471.

                3) Over same period, teams with best 3rd down offenses:
                1) Saints 34-64, .531
                2) Panthers 29-60, .483
                3) Ravens 35-73, .478.

                2) When in doubt of what game to watch on the NFL Sunday Ticket, its gotten to the point where I put the Panthers on. Entertaining team to watch. Credit to Cam Newton for that one.

                1) Buffalo Bills lost twice to Miami this season; in those two games, they had 23 third down plays, and didn’t get one first down. Zero. Bupkus.

                    Wednesday, December 21

Keep in mind that first semester just ended at most colleges, so transfers are becoming eligible in some places, making things a little trickier......

Duquesne is 0-3 on road, losing by 8-6-14 points, also their only three games vs top 100 teams; Dukes are #188 in defense despite being 10th in country forcing turnovers. George Mason won five of its last six games after three of their first four had gone OT. Patriot opponents are making only 28.6% from arc. Atlantic 14 road underdogs of 6 or less points are 12-7 vs spread; CAA home favorites of 7 or less points are 3-5.

First true road game for 9-1 Seton Hall squad that has neutral court top 100 wins over VCU/St Joe's; Pirates force turnovers on 24.2% of foes' possessions. Dayton won seven of last nine games; they're 2-2 vs top 100 teams, beating Minnesota/Alabama. Big East road underdogs of 6 or less points are 4-9 vs spread; Atlantic 14 home favorites of 6 or less points are 10-2.

First true road game for Texas squad (UCLA isn't playing at Pauley this year) whose only losses are by 3 to NC State (led by 18), 5 to Oregon State. North Carolina is 3-2 vs top 50 teams, winning by 3-6-12 points; Tar Heels are #11 defensive team in country, fouling less than anyone. Big X road underdogs of 4+ points are 2-7-1 vs spread; ACC double digit home favorites are 10-13.

NC-Wilmington shoots just 27.7% behind arc; they're 4-6, with three of last four losses by 5 or less points. Wake Forest is 5-0 vs teams not in top 200, with four of five wins by 8+ points; well-coached Deacons are 4-1 at home, with only loss to Richmond. CAA single digit road dogs are 2-15 vs spread; ACC single digit home favorites are 6-5. Seahawks won three of last four games after an 0-5 start.

UL-Monroe lost 71-59 at home to Indiana State on Nov 14, making just 37% from floor; Warhawks are 1-11 after getting beat 81-63 at UNLV Monday. First home game in month for 8-2 Indiana State squad coming in off upset win at Vanderbilt; their PG Odum is showing grit playing thru leg injury. Sun Belt road underdogs of 12+ points are 20-8-1 vs spread; MVC home favorites of 12+ points are 6-5.

Third game in five nights for Cornell squad that beat Albany in OT on Saturday, then lost 64-60 at Illinois Monday; Big Red is 0-4 on road, losing by 21-9-8-4 points. Central Florida is 8-2 despite being poor-shooting team; they're 4-0 vs teams not ranked in top 200, winning by 12-19-2-12 points; Knights are holding teams to 27.7% shooting behind arc. UL-Lafayette is 0-6 against teams ranked in top 125, losing by 20-19-9-17-12-8 points. Conference USA road favorites of 5 or less points are 3-7 vs spread; Sun Belt single digit home underdogs are 8-6.

Cal Poly is 3-1 on road, allowing 40.7 ppg in the wins; two of their three losses are top 30 teams (UNLV/St Mary's). Mustangs' pace is #344 in country, 2nd-slowest. 8-3 DePaul plays #11 pace; they've won last four games, all vs teams ranked #239 or worse- they're 0-3 vs top 100 clubs, losing by 1-2-11 points. Big West road underdogs of 8 or less points are 8-3 vs spread; Big East home favorites of 6 or less points are 0-5.

Big X road underdogs of 4+ points are 2-7-1 vs spread; SEC single digit home favorites are 6-5. Young Tide (one senior in their rotation) is already playing sixth game vs top 60 opponent (3-2).

Middle Tennessee is making 56% of 2-point shots; they're 4-1 on road, 2-1 vs top 100 teams, winning at UCLA, splitting with Belmont. 9-2 Ole Miss is 2-0 vs Sun Belt teams, winning by 22-12 points; they're 1-2 vs top 100 teams, losing by 30-4 points. Rebels shoot just 59.6% from line as a team. Sun Belt road underdogs of 5 or less points are 4-5; SEC home favorites of less than 5 points are 4-0. This is a good game.

Arizona State needed its prize freshman PG eligible, but he isn't, so Sun Devils are struggling- they lost last two games at home at buzzer, to Northern Arizona/Southern Miss; ASU is already 2-5 at home, not good. Wm&Mary is 1-9 vs D-I teams, forcing less turnovers than snyone in country- they lost last three games vs D-I teams, all by 30+ points. MAAC favorites are 6-10 vs spread, 4-4 on road; CAA are 3-7, 0-4 if they're getting more than 7 points.

Tenn-Martin lost 18 of its last 19 games vs Murray State, losing eight in a row here, with six of the eight by 18+ points; Skyhawks lost 10 of 11 vs D-I teams, turning ball over 27.1% of time; opponents are shooting 56% inside arc against Martin. Unbeaten Racers have three top 100 wins and don't play anyone rest of year ranked higher than #183, so they have to guard against overconfidence, because target is on their back now.
