Gonzaga favored big over Butler Tuesday

    BUTLER BULLDOGS (5-6)

    at GONZAGA BULLDOGS (7-2)

    Tip-off: Tuesday, 9:00 p.m. EDT
    Line: Gonzaga -12.5, Total: 134

Butler continues its early-season gauntlet when it travels across the country to play Gonzaga Tuesday night.

Butler has already played three true road games as well as home games against two top-10 opponents. But while the Bulldogs’ record isn’t good, they play the kind of slow-tempo game to keep this close, especially because Gonzaga hasn’t overwhelmed teams at home. In five games in Spokane, the Zags have only won by double-digits once, and that was against a shorthanded (and bad even at full strength) Notre Dame team. Last week they beat an Oral Roberts squad (that’s similar to Butler) by only six points at home. BUTLER is the pick to keep the score under 10.

The FoxSheets have a three-star trend working in Butler’s favor:

Play On - A road team (BUTLER) - terrible shooting team (<=40%) against an average defensive team (42.5-45%). (172-93 over the last 5 seasons.) (64.9%, +69.7 units. Rating = 3*).

After a shaky start to the season, especially on the offensive end, Butler may have turned the corner with Saturday’s win over Purdue. The Bulldogs trailed by as many as 12 in the second half, but finished the game on a 12-1 run and won it 67-65 on Andrew Smith’s tip-in with one second left. They have shot the ball horribly all season, shooting 39% from the field and 29% from three. But they made 45% of their shots against the Boilermakers, including 7-for-16 from three. SG Chase Stigall came off the bench to shoot 3-for-6 from three, finishing with 11 points. Freshman SF Kameron Woods added 12 points, including two threes, off the bench. Smith also had one of his better games of the year, getting 12 points and six rebounds (four offensive) in just 22 minutes of action.

On the year, only Khyle Marshall (10.4 PPG) and Smith (10.1 PPG) average double-digit points for Butler. But the Bulldogs allow only 64.0 PPG, 42% shooting from the field and 31% from three.

Gonzaga is coming off a nice win over Arizona, 71-60 in Seattle. Junior F Elias Harris had one of the best games of his career, going for 25 points and eight rebounds. He and 7-foot, 260-pound C Robert Sacre (14.9 PPG, 7.2 RPG) should be too much for the Butler’s frontcourt to handle. One potential trouble spot is the recent shooting of freshman PG Kevin Pangos (13.1 PPG). After shooting 12-for-19 from three over the first three games of the season, he’s hit 7-of-31 (23%) since then, including 0-for-5 in the Arizona win.

Blackhawks seek 6th straight win facing Pens

    CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS (21-8-4, 46 points)

at PITTSBURGH PENGUINS (18-11-4, 40 points)

Puck drops: Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. EDT
    Line: Chicago -125, Pittsburgh +105, Total: 5.5

With Sidney Crosby out with recurring concussion symptoms for the second time this season, the Pittsburgh Penguins are struggling to win with consistency. And unfortunately, things won’t get much easier for the Pens when they host red-hot Chicago on Tuesday.

This will be the Blackhawks’ first visit to the Consol Energy Center since the arena opened last year. Chicago won last season’s matchup between the 2009 and 2010 Stanley Cup Champions at the United Center 3-2 in a shootout, and each of the past three meetings have gone into overtime. The streaking Blackhawks lead the NHL in points with 46 after winning seven of their past eight games, including five straight. It also looks as though the Hawks have a new number one netminder in Ray Emery (9-1-2, 2.50 GAA, .909 SV Pct.)—who has been between the pipes for six of the seven aforementioned wins. The Penguins are coming off a dominant 8-3 win over Buffalo on Saturday, but are just 2-3-0 since Crosby left the lineup. Over the past 15 games, the Penguins are an unimpressive 7-7-1. During that stretch, their wins have come against teams with a combined points percentage (NHL’s version of win percentage) of .475, while their loses have come against teams with a combined percentage of .626. This large discrepancy tells us that Pittsburgh racks up points by beating the weaker teams, but struggles mightily against elite competition. With these statistics in mind, CHICAGO, as the best team in the NHL, is a strong play in this game.

This FoxSheets also sides with the Blackhawks:

CHICAGO is 38-11 ATS (77.6%, +21.2 Units) off a home win scoring 4 or more goals over the last 3 seasons. The average score was CHICAGO 3.8, OPPONENT 2.4 - (Rating = 2*).

The Blackhawks feature one of the league’s deepest and most balanced offensive attacks, with four skaters eclipsing the 30-point mark—more than any other team. RW Marian Hossa (15 G, 21 A) leads all scorers, and team captain C Jonathan Toews (18 G, 17 A) is an early candidate for league MVP. C Patrick Sharp (17 G, 18 A) and LW Patrick Kane (9 G, 23 A) round out Chicago’s lethal top four.

Defenseman Duncan Keith (2 G, 19 A) anchors the Hawks’ blue line, but may be without his partner Brent Seabrook (75 blocked shots), who is listed as day-to-day with an upper body injury. Emery—who boasts the lowest GAA in the NHL in the month of December—will make his sixth consecutive start for the Hawks.

Even without Crosby, the Penguins still have great depth on offense, led by C Evgeni Malkin (15 G, 21 A) and LW James Neal (18 G, 14 A). The 24-year-old Neal—who came to Pittsburgh at last year’s trade deadline—has had a breakout season playing alongside Malkin.

Injuries have really hampered the Pens this month, with two of their top defensemen— Kris Letang (3 G, 16 A) and Zbynek Michalek both sidelined with concussions. C Jordan Staal (12 G, 6 A) is a game-time decision with a lower body injury. G Marc-Andre Fleury (16-7-2, 2.31 GAA, .914 SV Pct.) will get the start for Pittsburgh. Fleury is 3-1-0 in six career starts against Chicago.

NHL: The New York Rangers are 11-5 in their last 16 games in New Jersey.

NHL: Minnesota is 7-1 in its last eight road games.

NBA: Philadelphia is 7-2-1 against the spread in its last 10 against Washington.

      Who’s not

NCAAF: FIU is 1-6 against the spread in its last seven games on fieldturf.

NCAAB: Butler is 1-7-1 against the spread in its last nine.

NCAAB: Old Dominion is 2-7 against the number in its last nine meetings with Richmond.

NHL: Buffalo is 4-9 in its last 13 overall.

NHL: Phoenix is 1-4 in its last five.

NBA: Detroit is 3-7 against the number in its last 10 vs. Cleveland.

      Key stat

8.5 – Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin is scoring on just 8.5 percent of his shots this season. He sits tied for seventh with 117 shots on goal, but has scored just 10 times heading into Tuesday’s game against Nashville.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Terrence Jones, Kentucky Wildcats - Jones is questionable to play against Samford on Tuesday because of a dislocated finger. Jones suffered the injury in Saturday's win over Chattanooga, leaving the game in the second half. Jones has missed two straight practices and coach John Calipari doesn't think the 6-foot-9 sophomore will start on Tuesday. Jones is averaging 12.4 points and 6.2 rebounds on the season.

      Game of the day

Florida International Golden Panthers at Marshall Thundering Herd (4, 48) – More than 64 percent of *********** Consensus bettors were supporting Florida International as of Monday night.

      Notable quotable

"We've gotten to the point where everybody started overlooking us and talking about everybody else and I kind of got (mad) about it. Y'all trying to take something away from us that we've worked hard for and we took. We earned everything we did last year. Everybody on this team earned the right to be addressed as world champions, so everybody needs to address them like that." – Dallas Mavericks forward Shawn Marion. The books opened Dallas’ season win total at 44.5. The Mavs are set as 4-point underdogs Tuesday against Oklahoma City.

      Notes and tips

All-American center Jared Sullinger will be on the court when second-ranked Ohio State plays Lamar on Tuesday night, coach Thad Matta said. Sullinger left Saturday's win over South Carolina with a foot injury, which was later determined to be an injured tendon. Matta said Sullinger has been feeling better with each passing day. Sullinger has also missed a pair of games this season with back spasms. He is averaging 16.6 points and 9.3 rebounds on the campaign.

Purdue will be without the services of wide receiver O.J. Ross in its upcoming Little Caesars Bowl against Western Michigan. Ross was suspended on Dec. 6 for violating team rules, which was later found to be academic related. The sophomore is the Boilermakers' third-leading receiver in both receptions (33) and yards (356) this season. He also had three touchdowns for Purdue, which plays in its bowl game on Dec. 27. The Boilermakers are set as 2.5-point favorites.

Calgary Flames left wing Rene Bourque has been suspended two games on Monday following his hit on Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook. The former ********* drove Seabrook headfirst into the glass during the first period during Sunday's 4-2 loss. Seabrook did not return to the contest, while Bourque was handed a major penalty and a game misconduct. Bourque, who has collected seven points in his last nine games, has recorded 11 goals, three assists and 31 penalty minutes this season. He will miss Tuesday's game against the Minnesota Wild and Thursday's contest versus the Detroit Red Wings.

        Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Odds to win the 2012 World Series.......

+$450-- Phillies-- Even with Ryan Howard out early in season.

        +$600-- Red Sox-Angels-Bronx Bombers

+$800-- Rangers-- Two-time AL champs lost CJ Wilson to Angels

+$1000-- Marlins-- Open new ballpark against the Cardinals.

+$1200-- Cardinals-Braves- How will Cardinals spend their extra $$?

+$1500-- Giants-Tigers-Rays-- Can Joe Maddon do it again?

        ******************

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13........Our top 8, bottom 5 in NFL.........

        32) Colts—Should they bench Orlovsky, to make sure they don’t win another game and blow the #1 pick?

        31) Rams—Finish with Steelers/49ers, which means yet another fun-filled 2-14 season. Terrific.

        30) Vikings—These guys led first three games of season by double digits at halftime and they’re 2-12 while Tarvaris Jackson is making late run for playoffs. Someone has some ‘splainin’ to do.

        29) Buccaneers—Trying to remember why they fired Jon Gruden.

        28) Bills—Lost at home in December to team from Miami that just fired its coach. Their $60M QB didn’t get a football scholarship to college. Need I go on?

        8) Texans—Hopefully Wade Phillips will get well soon. Would be nice if they get some injured players back for first playoff appearance.

        7) Falcons—Thursday night game gives them 11 days to rest up for rivalry game Monday night in Superdome.

        6) Steelers—Finish with Rams/Browns, now need help from an unlikely source to win division title.

        5) 49ers—If Saints go to Candlestick January 21-22, who will be favored?

        4) Ravens— John Harbaugh can thank his brother for being back in first.

        3) Saints—On a serious roll now. Will be very tough out in January.

        2) Patriots—Denver ran for over 250 yards against them; don’t trust defense against playoff-caliber offense.

        1) Packers—Why was Aaron Rodgers smiling on sidelines at end of the game Sunday? Loss to Chiefs makes their lives a lot easier the next couple weeks. Think McCarthy not challenging that play was intentional?
