Tuesday’s betting tips: Bowl bettors piling on FIU

    Who’s hot

NCAAF: The over is 4-1 in Marshall’s last five.

NCAAB: Syracuse has covered the number in 12 of its last 17.

NCAAB: Louisville is 11-4-1 against the spread in its last 16.

NHL: The New York Rangers are 11-5 in their last 16 games in New Jersey.

NHL: Minnesota is 7-1 in its last eight road games.

NBA: Philadelphia is 7-2-1 against the spread in its last 10 against Washington.

    Who’s not

NCAAF: FIU is 1-6 against the spread in its last seven games on fieldturf.

NCAAB: Butler is 1-7-1 against the spread in its last nine.

NCAAB: Old Dominion is 2-7 against the number in its last nine meetings with Richmond.

NHL: Buffalo is 4-9 in its last 13 overall.

NHL: Phoenix is 1-4 in its last five.

NBA: Detroit is 3-7 against the number in its last 10 vs. Cleveland.

    Key stat

8.5 – Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin is scoring on just 8.5 percent of his shots this season. He sits tied for seventh with 117 shots on goal, but has scored just 10 times heading into Tuesday’s game against Nashville.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Terrence Jones, Kentucky Wildcats - Jones is questionable to play against Samford on Tuesday because of a dislocated finger. Jones suffered the injury in Saturday's win over Chattanooga, leaving the game in the second half. Jones has missed two straight practices and coach John Calipari doesn't think the 6-foot-9 sophomore will start on Tuesday. Jones is averaging 12.4 points and 6.2 rebounds on the season.

    Game of the day

Florida International Golden Panthers at Marshall Thundering Herd (4, 48) – More than 64 percent of *********** Consensus bettors were supporting Florida International as of Monday night.

    Notable quotable

"We've gotten to the point where everybody started overlooking us and talking about everybody else and I kind of got (mad) about it. Y'all trying to take something away from us that we've worked hard for and we took. We earned everything we did last year. Everybody on this team earned the right to be addressed as world champions, so everybody needs to address them like that." – Dallas Mavericks forward Shawn Marion. The books opened Dallas’ season win total at 44.5. The Mavs are set as 4-point underdogs Tuesday against Oklahoma City.

    Notes and tips

All-American center Jared Sullinger will be on the court when second-ranked Ohio State plays Lamar on Tuesday night, coach Thad Matta said. Sullinger left Saturday's win over South Carolina with a foot injury, which was later determined to be an injured tendon. Matta said Sullinger has been feeling better with each passing day. Sullinger has also missed a pair of games this season with back spasms. He is averaging 16.6 points and 9.3 rebounds on the campaign.

Purdue will be without the services of wide receiver O.J. Ross in its upcoming Little Caesars Bowl against Western Michigan. Ross was suspended on Dec. 6 for violating team rules, which was later found to be academic related. The sophomore is the Boilermakers' third-leading receiver in both receptions (33) and yards (356) this season. He also had three touchdowns for Purdue, which plays in its bowl game on Dec. 27. The Boilermakers are set as 2.5-point favorites.

Calgary Flames left wing Rene Bourque has been suspended two games on Monday following his hit on Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook. The former ********* drove Seabrook headfirst into the glass during the first period during Sunday's 4-2 loss. Seabrook did not return to the contest, while Bourque was handed a major penalty and a game misconduct. Bourque, who has collected seven points in his last nine games, has recorded 11 goals, three assists and 31 penalty minutes this season. He will miss Tuesday's game against the Minnesota Wild and Thursday's contest versus the Detroit Red Wings.

      Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Odds to win the 2012 World Series.......

+$450-- Phillies-- Even with Ryan Howard out early in season.

      +$600-- Red Sox-Angels-Bronx Bombers

+$800-- Rangers-- Two-time AL champs lost CJ Wilson to Angels

+$1000-- Marlins-- Open new ballpark against the Cardinals.

+$1200-- Cardinals-Braves- How will Cardinals spend their extra $$?

+$1500-- Giants-Tigers-Rays-- Can Joe Maddon do it again?

      ******************

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13........Our top 8, bottom 5 in NFL.........

      32) Colts—Should they bench Orlovsky, to make sure they don’t win another game and blow the #1 pick?

      31) Rams—Finish with Steelers/49ers, which means yet another fun-filled 2-14 season. Terrific.

      30) Vikings—These guys led first three games of season by double digits at halftime and they’re 2-12 while Tarvaris Jackson is making late run for playoffs. Someone has some ‘splainin’ to do.

      29) Buccaneers—Trying to remember why they fired Jon Gruden.

      28) Bills—Lost at home in December to team from Miami that just fired its coach. Their $60M QB didn’t get a football scholarship to college. Need I go on?

      8) Texans—Hopefully Wade Phillips will get well soon. Would be nice if they get some injured players back for first playoff appearance.

      7) Falcons—Thursday night game gives them 11 days to rest up for rivalry game Monday night in Superdome.

      6) Steelers—Finish with Rams/Browns, now need help from an unlikely source to win division title.

      5) 49ers—If Saints go to Candlestick January 21-22, who will be favored?

      4) Ravens— John Harbaugh can thank his brother for being back in first.

      3) Saints—On a serious roll now. Will be very tough out in January.

      2) Patriots—Denver ran for over 250 yards against them; don’t trust defense against playoff-caliber offense.

      1) Packers—Why was Aaron Rodgers smiling on sidelines at end of the game Sunday? Loss to Chiefs makes their lives a lot easier the next couple weeks. Think McCarthy not challenging that play was intentional?

            Tuesday, December 20

Keep in mind that first semester just ended at most colleges, so transfers are becoming eligible in some places, making things a little trickier......

St Bonaventure is 1-3 vs top 100 teams, losing by 3-9-5 points, one of which was 73-64 loss to ACC's Virginia Tech; their best win is over #82 Buffalo. Five of NC State's six wins are vs teams ranked #131 or lower; their only top 100 win was over Texas, game they trailed by 18. Atlantic 14 home teams are 6-3-1 vs spread in games where number is 4 or less points; ACC teams are 11-18 against spread when number is less than 5.

Evansville is 0-2 on road, losing by 4 at Ill-Chicago, 49 at Chapel Hill; Purple Aces are 3-5 vs D-I teams, with only win vs team in top 300 at home in OT vs #120 Butler. Miami O is 2-5 vs D-I teams but both wins are over top 75 teams, Dayton/Belmont- they're 0-3 vs teams ranked lower than #200. Go figure. MAC home faves of less than 9 points are 7-1-1 vs spread; MVC road underdogs of 7 or less points are 11-7.

Home team won last six Old Dominion-Richmond games; Monarchs lost last three visits here by 3-6-7 points. ODU lost four of last six games, as they're shooting just 26.3% behind arc, 64.9% from line. Richmond lost last three games, allowing 80 ppg; they're 0-5 vs teams ranked in the top 125 (ODU is #122). Atlantic 14 home favorites of 7 or less points are 11-2 vs spread; CAA road underdogs of 7 or less points are 2-14.

7-3 VCU won its last four games, all by 15+ points; they're #5 in nation forcing turnovers (28.4% of possessions); Rams lost 68-65 at UAB LY. Blazers are 2-6 this season, have been off for 13 days since upsetting a pretty good Middle Tennessee team in last game. UAB is 0-3 on road, losing by 22-8-9 points. CAA home favorites are 7-11 vs spread, 2-3 if spread is double digits; Conference USA double digit road dogs are 7-2.

Ohio U/Northern Iowa are both 9-1, so this is Bracket Buster type tilt with two teams who will make noise in March. Bobcats' only loss was by 5 at Louisville; their other top 100 game was impressive 70-68 win at Matshall. Ohio won its last four road games. UNI's best win was at #79 Iowa State; they also beat #85 Milwaukee. MAC road underdogs of 6 or less points are 2-7 vs spread; MVC home favorites of 7 or less are 4-8.

Northeastern is 3-5, scoring 60 ppg in losing last four games, but #263 Louisiana Tech will be worst team they've played; Huskies are turning ball over 27.3% of time (#340), its hard to win when you don't get shots at basket. Tech won four of last five games; five of their last six games were won by 3 or less points. CAA road teams are 6-11 vs spread if number is 4 or less; WAC home teams are 3-7 if spread is 5 or less.

BYU is 7-3 vs D-I teams, with all seven wins by 14+ points, but they lost to only two top 100 teams they've played (Wisconsin/Baylor); they got lift in last game from UCLA transfer Carlino, a lefty guard who can shoot it. Buffalo is 1-1 vs top 100 teams, winning by 29 at Dayton, but losing at home by 6 to St Bonaventure. MAC road underdogs of 7+ points are 18-9-1 vs spread. WCC double digit home favorites are 6-6-1.

Gonzaga just beat Arizona by 11, its 5th game in row vs a top 70 team; Zags are 3-0 vs teams not ranked in top 100, winning by 8-19-20 points. Butler just upset Purdue, snapping 4-game skid vs D-I teams; Bulldogs are shooting just 26.3% behind arc. Butler has three losses by 12+, two in OT, another by three points. Horizon double digit road underdogs are 7-8-1 vs spread; WCC double digit home favorites are 6-6-1 vs spread.

Former Bradley coach/NBA player Les is off to 0-9 start at UC-Davis, with one win vs non-D-I team; Aggies' last four losses are all by 13 or more points. San Jose State is 2-7 vs D-I teams, with loss to Montana State (#290) so not lot to choose from here. Spartans make just 35.9% of 2-point shots, 2nd-worst in country. WAC single digit home favorites are 3-11 vs spread; Big West road underdogs of 8 or less points are 8-2.

0-10 Towson State might be worst team in country, turning ball over an amazing 31.7% of possessions- six of their seven losses vs teams in top 150 were by 17+ points. Manhattan is 5-0 vs teams not in top 200, with four wins by 14+ points. Jaspers turn ball over a lot too (25.9%, #327) but they won last two road games, by 16 at Rider, 9 at Hofstra. CAA home dogs are 3-6 vs spread; MAAC favorites are 5-9, 3-4 on the road.

Young Charleston team is 9-1, winning only road game at Clemson by 3; their only loss was to Central Florida by 11 on neutral floor. Louisville has played only one road game so far, winning at Butler; they've won six games vs teams in top 120. Southern Conference road underdogs of 15+ points are 8-5 vs spread; Big East home faves of 12+ points are 10-21-1 vs spread. Cougars have only one senior in their rotation. Louisville is off wild 95-87 home win over Memphis Saturday.

#26 St Mary's has games vs Baylor/Missouri State Thursday/Friday, so easy to look past Eastern Washington here; Gaels are 9-1 against #321 schedule, 3-1 vs teams in top 200, with wins by 5-17-16 points. Eagles foul more than any team in country; they've lost last three games vs D-I opponents, by 26-15-13 points. Big Sky road underdogs of 13+ points are 11-5 vs spread; WCC double digit home favorites are 6-6-1.

Arizona is coming off loss at Gonzaga, when they fell behind 14-0 right off bat; Wildcats are 3-4 in last seven games, even losing a home game to San Diego State. #126 Oakland is 0-4 vs top 100 teams, losing by 17-23-2-10 points; they're more of an offensive team, playing fast, #6 tempo in country. College funds: Tuesday's best NCAAB bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Charleston Cougars at Louisville Cardinals (-16, 138.5)

Louisville passed another major test over the weekend when it outlasted Memphis 95-87. The fourth-ranked Cardinals have spread the points around as coach Rick Pitino continues to get pieces back from injury to add to his rotation.

Russ Smith led the way with a career-high 24 points Saturday but it was his seven steals that made more impact in Louisville’s pressure defense and transition offense.

The next school to take a crack at the Cardinals in the Yum! Center will be College of Charleston on Tuesday. A perennial contender for the Southern Conference’s automatic NCAA Tournament bid, the Cougars have won six straight since their lone loss and are averaging nearly 75 points.

They might be a little over their heads here though.

                Pick: Cardinals

Eastern Kentucky Colonels at Arkansas Razorbacks (-12.5, 132.5)

Eastern Kentucky has won four consecutive games, including a 59-53 win over Jacksonville State. The Colonels’ top three scorers lived up to that label as Jaron Jones, Eric Stutz and Joshua Jones combined for 48 points and 15-of-26 shooting (58 percent).

Jaron Jones, a senior guard, and Stutz, a freshman forward, haven’t been missing many shots. Jones and Stutz are both hitting 56 percent of their shots, and as a team the Colonels are shooting 44 percent from the field. Junior guard Mike DiNunno is averaging 3.3 assists and chips in with 9.5 points.

That has the Colonels at 4-2 against the spread in the six games that they’ve seen a line.

Razorbacks supporters haven’t been nearly as lucky. Arkansas managed to down Southeast Louisiana 62-55, but the club is 0-3 against the number this season.

                Pick: Colonels

Ice picks: Tuesday's best NHL bets
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Blackhawks at Pittsburgh Penguins (+110, 5.5)

With the news that Sidney Crosby had been returned to the injured reserve hovering over the Pittsburgh Penguins, Evgeni Malkin put on a scoring display to make The Kid proud Saturday night.

Malkin scored three times and added a pair of assists to help the Pens to an 8-3 drubbing of the Buffalo Sabres, snapping a two-game losing streak.

"He's the guy right now,” Matt Cooke told reporters of Malkin. “He can't look anywhere else. It's got to be on him, and he knows that. He understands that, and he's playing very well."

Malkin now leads the team with 36 points in 25 games and is riding a major hot streak with 12 points in his last six outings. The Blackhawks come into this one having won five games in a row, but Pittsburgh is one of the best home teams in the league.

The Pens have just three regulation losses on home ice this year.

                        Pick: Penguins

Nashville Predators at Washington Capitals (-140, 5.5)

The great thing about the Nashville Predators is that they never seem content.

With Saturday’s 2-1 shootout win over the surging St. Louis Blues, the Predators have now won five straight keeping them in the middle of the Western Conference playoff hunt. Still, the Preds weren’t satisfied.

“It’s good to get the four points, but we didn’t play great against Detroit, and I don’t think we played very well tonight,” captain Shea Weber told reporters Saturday.

Imagine what the Capitals would do for that kind of message in their dressing room - following a win, no less. Dale Hunter still hasn’t been able to get consistent results from Washington. It’s the same old story too. Outside of Nicklas Backstrom, there aren’t many guys pulling their own weight right now.

Alex Ovechkin has just 10 goals on 117 shots and Alex Semin scored for the first time in nine games in Saturday’s loss. It was his sixth goal of the year.

                        Pick: Predators

Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL trends
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

                          HOT TEAM: New Jersey Devils

The low point hit in a four-game span that bridged November to December. Legendary goaltender Martin Brodeur was shaky, at best, the goals on the other end were few and far between, and New Jersey had lost four consecutive games.

But center Travis Zajac is back now from a torn Achilles, and suddenly, the Devils have some life. A 5-3 victory over the Canadiens on Saturday in Montreal was proof positive. Patrik Elias scored two goals -- his 12th and 13th -- and Brodeur made 23 saves en route to their 18th win of the season. Through Saturday, they had won four in a row, and six of the last seven.

Listen, the Devils, like their Hall of Fame netminder, are clearly not what they used to be. We all know that, and we all know that it will be a tough task making the postseason in the Eastern Conference with that roster. But they are showing heart, they now have some health, and if they can get by the rival Rangers on Tuesday in Newark, the confidence may truly continue to snowball.

                          COLD TEAM: Phoenix Coyotes

To be sitting in third place in the ultra-competitive Pacific Division, just two points out of first through Saturday is a good position for this team. But if they have intentions of keeping up with Dallas and San Jose, they need more consistent play, and certainly better decision making than they showed Saturday vs. the Rangers.

Phoenix was a turnover machine versus New York at home, giving the puck away at inopportune times and in costly positions on the ice. It added up to a 3-2 loss, their fourth in the last five games, and their sixth in December.

And if they're going to snap out of it, they need everyone on the same page. This team, after all, has no superstars. There is talent for sure -- Ray Whitney has 28 points and Radim Vrbata has 15 goals -- but if Phoenix isn't one, big, cohesive unit, the Coyotes have no chance against deeper, more seasoned teams like the Sharks and Stars. Until they figure that all out, keep them on your fade radar.

                          OVER PLAY: Philadelphia Flyers

Chris Pronger’s absence will be felt, short term and long. Not only will HBO and its 24-7 Winter Classic reality show team not have Pronger around much more to showcase due to his concussion, the fact remains that he is the team’s captain and still a more-than-solid defenseman.

But that only means that the Flyers -- with all of their offensive firepower -- are now a much better over play than ever before. And they were already pretty good. Sure, they have adequate goaltending with Ilya Bryzgalov and Sergei Bobrovsky, but both have tendencies to let some softies in here and there.

Saturday’s humiliating 6-0 loss to Boston at home was the Flyers’ fourth consecutive over and seventh in the last eight games. In the first three of that four-game stretch, the Flyers scored at least four goals, so the punch is still there, despite the absence of forward Claude Giroux, also to a concussion. And consider this: As long as HBO’s cameras continue to document their run, look for them to continue to want to show off. That’s good news for over players. Philadelphia plays at Colorado on Tuesday.

                          UNDER PLAY: Los Angeles Kings

Tough to give the nod to a team that was just blasted by Detroit, 8-2, on Saturday, but hear us out. The Kings have a new coach in interim John Stevens. And they might even be getting another soon, as reports circulated on Saturday night that they were about to hire Darryl Sutter on a permanent basis.

But either way, the offense hasn’t been there of late, and in that aforementioned Pacific Division, you need all guns blazing to be able to hang. So far, the Kings can’t. In a stretch of games that ended with the whitewash at the hands of the Red Wings, Los Angeles orchestrated an 8-2-3 under run. In December alone, and leading up to Monday’s tilt at Toronto, they had six unders.

Los Angeles has just two players in double-digit goals -- Mike Richards (11) and Anze Kopitar (10) -- and Richards is out with a head injury, so it looks like it might get worse before it gets better for a team that already has 16 unders to its name. More of the same may be in store.

                          SURVEYING THE SCHEDULE:

** If you believe patterns develop within teams through the season, then monitor Winnipeg’s next back-to-back situation carefully. In the last two pair-of-games-in-a-24-hour span, the Jets won Game 1, only to lose Game 2. Well, on Thursday and Friday, the Jets play the Canadiens and Penguins, both at home. Let’s see if the trend continues.

** We mentioned HBO’s 24-7 series, and it’s not just about the Flyers. The Rangers have a role here, too, and there will be plenty of posing for the camera this week, as the rivals arrive. In fact, in a span of four days, beginning on Tuesday in New Jersey, New York will play three games, all against its biggest foes: the Devils, Islanders (Thursday) and Flyers (Friday). They might be a tad tired by the time they take the ice versus Philadelphia.
