Monday's betting tips: Line holds with Big Ben iffy

    Who’s hot

NFL: San Francisco is 11-2-1 against the spread in its last 14.

NCAAB: Indiana is 6-0 against the spread this season.

NCAAB: Creighton is 19-7 against the spread in its last 26 overall.

NHL: Minnesota is 7-1 in its last eight road games.

NBA: The L.A. Clippers have covered in four of their last five games against the Lakers.

    Who’s not

NFL: Pittsburgh is 1-4 against the spread in its last five games as a road underdog.

NCAAB: Marquette is 1-4 against the number in its last five overall.

NCAAB: North Carolina is 1-4 against the spread in its last five home games.

NHL: Montreal is 3-8 in its last 11.

NBA: Atlanta has covered just once in its last six games against Charlotte.

    Key stat

45.7 – The Indiana Hoosiers are the nation’s top 3-point shooting team, connecting on 45.7 percent of their trey attempts. Indiana is unbeaten at 10-0 and is 6-0 against the spread heading into Monday’s game against Howard.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers - The status of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for Monday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers could depend on the outcome of the Sunday night contest between the Baltimore Ravens and San Diego Chargers. Roethlisberger is questionable for Week 15 after suffering a high ankle sprain in last Thursday’s win over the Cleveland Browns. The thinking behind the Steelers' plans is that if Baltimore losses Sunday, they may be able to afford resting their No. 1 quarterback.

    Game of the day

Pittsburgh Steelers at San Francisco 49ers (-3, 38.5)

    Notable quotable

"I'm crazy competitive. I think that's what makes me the player that I am. I just have to compete, so knowing that they never won a championship here I wanted to be a part of something like that. ... I want to see those Clippers T-shirts around town. I want to see everybody filing into Staples Center to see us play and at the end of the day I want to win here." – Los Angeles Clippers point guard Chris Paul after landing with the Clippers, instead of the Lakers. The Clips and Lakers face off in preseason play Monday and the books opened with the Lakers set as 3.5-point favorites.

    Notes and tips

Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin was sent to hospital following a locker room fight with receiver Curtis Drake after practice Saturday. According to the quarterback’s father, McGloin suffered a seizure and a concussion during the incident. He was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center and MRI and CAT scans came back negative. Details of the fight have not been released, nor has the status for both players for Penn State’s upcoming Ticket City Bowl versus the Houston Cougars on Jan 2. Penn State is currently set as a 5.5-point underdog.

Marquette suspended senior guard and leading scorer Darius Johnson-Odom is expected to return to the lineup Monday against LSU. He was suspended Saturday due to a violation of team rules. The team announced the suspension prior to Saturday night's home game against Northern Colorado, but did not specify the reason for the disciplinary action. Johnson-Odom is averaging 18.8 points per game for the 11th-ranked Golden Eagles.

      Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

College basketball notes from the weekend..........

-- Oral Roberts 64, Xavier 42-- Suspensions take a heavy toll.

-- Northern Arizona 69, Arizona State 68-- ASU will have new coach in 2012-13; this just isn't a good fit. Coach Sendek could easily walk.

-- St Joe's 74, Villanova 58-- At this rate, Villanova is NIT/CBI team.

-- Baylor 86, BYU 83-- Great win. Bears are best team in Big X.

-- Syracuse 88, NC State 72-- Orange had 23-0 run, then blew 17-point lead, then won by 16 anyway. Interesting +/- chart, I bet.

-- South Dakota State 92, Washington 73-- Totally baffling.

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

      13) Huge blunder by Oakland coach Jackson Sunday; Raiders scored TD on defense with 7:47 left to grab a 26-14 lead on the Lions. THEY HAVE TO GO FOR 2 POINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why? Because Detroit won't kick a field goal from that point on, so being up 13 points is no different than a 12-point lead, but a 14-point lead is way better. But no, Oakland kicked a PAT, led 27-14, then watched as Matthew Stafford tore their hearts out with TD drives of 71-98 yards to beat the Raiders 28-27.

NFL teams are worth almost a billion dollars, yet the most basic elements of game management are screwed up week after week. How? Why?

      12) Tough day for football in New Jersey, as Giants got whacked by the Redskins at home, getting swept by Washington for first time in 12 years, and Jets lost 45-19 at Philly, trailing 28-0 after 20:03 had been played. It sets up a big Christmas Eve game in Swamp Stadium next Saturday.

      11) Put it this way; if Eagles can win out and get to 8-8, they'll win NFC East if Jets beat Giants, then the Giants beat Dallas. It could happen.

      10) Why did the Vikings get rid of Tarvaris Jackson?

      9) After being 4-17 in their last 21 bowl games, MAC teams went 2-0 on Saturday to get off to an uncharacteristically good start in this year's bowl season. Ohio U beat Utah State 24-23 in the last minute, as QB Tettleton, son of former big league catcher Mickey Tettleton, led the winning drive. Temple crushed Wyoming 37-15 in the New Mexico Bowl.

      8) San Diego State lost New Orleans Bowl because of a spitting penalty; UL-Lafayette was lining up for a 55-yard FG to win the game, unlikely as the Cajuns had already missed two PATs, but an Aztec lineman spit on a ULL lineman, hoping to draw him offsides. Officials caught him, the ball was moved five yards closer and ULL made the winning FG. Wow.

      7) Things got even worse over the weekend at Penn State, as starting QB McGloin was knocked unconscious in a scuffle with one of his receivers, then had a seizure as the result of a possible concussion. Hopefully he is OK; head injuries are scary, but obviouly this team has serious problems as the bowl game with Houston gets closer.

      6) Murray State's basketball team is 12-0; you look at who they have left to play, and you realize they could easily be unbeaten when March rolls around, and I'm not kidding. As of right now, Racers have played the #98 schedule in America, which is pretty strong.

      5) In a span of eight days, NFL Network will televise games involving the Jaguars-Buccaneers-Colts. Not exactly the best way to get customers to call the cable provider to add NFL Network to its basic tier.

      4) Five teams were minus-2 or worse in turnovers this week; those teams all lost, by an average score of 35-15. Denver ran ball for 252 yards but lost three fumbles and wound up with a 24-yard deficit in field position.

      3) Seattle scored five TDs in Chicago Sunday; two by the defense, one on a 80-yard drive, the other two on drives of 22-29 yards, one set up by a Chicago fumble. Offense gets short fields, your team should win.

      2) Buffalo lost its 7th game in row since giving Ryan Fitzpatrick a $60M contract; am I the only cynic who has a problem with giving such a huge contract to someone who didn't get a college scholarship for football? I mean, the Dolphins scored 30 points and they only got three FGs out of four trips to the Buffalo red zone.

      1) Here are Sunday's 3rd down conversions, divided by winners/losers:
Winning teams converted 83 of 187 3rd down plays: 44.4%.
Losing teams converted 47 of 154 3rd down plays: 30.5%.

Southern Miss had emotional home win vs Ole Miss Saturday, this is a quick turnaround vs Arizona State team that gagged in Saturday's awful home loss to #282 Northern Arizona. Four of last five ASU games were decided by 4 or less points. USM won seven of last eight games, with only loss in OT to unbeaten Murray State. ASU recruited a terrific PG but he isn't eligible so they're turning ball over 25.9% of time. C-USA road teams are 6-13-1 vs spread Pac-12 home teams of 5 or less are 2-6.

UCSB is 0-3 vs top 100 teams, losing by 7 at Washington Friday, in OT at home to both UNLV/San Diego State; Gauchos aren't bad on offense, but they rarely force turnovers. Cal Bears are 1-2 vs top 100 teams, with 21-point win over Denver, losses to Missouri/San Diego State- they've got big game at UNLV later in week, better not look past this game. Big West road underdogs are 21-15, 11-11 if spread is double digits. Pac-12 double digit home favorites are 13-19 vs spread.

TCU is 2-0 in true road games, winning both by combined total of three points at Houston/Evansville; Horned Frogs' win over Virginia catches my eye that this team might be improving. USC is 3-7 in last ten games, scoring just 47 ppg in losing last three; Trojans already have four home losses by 6 or less points; injury to PG Fontan on summer trip to Brazil has been killer. MWC road underdogs of 7+ points are 3-7; Pac-12 single digit home favorites are 6-12.

Davidson allowed 69 or less points in its five D-I wins, 82+ points in its three losses, by 13-4-23 points. Well-coached Wildcats only lost by 13 at Duke, so they can hang here. First game in 9 days for young Kansas team that is very thin with leader Thomas out injured; Jayhawks have trip to LA later in week, could look past Wildcats here. SoCon road underdogs of 15 or less points are 9-10; Big X home favorites of 11-19 points are 4-7 against the spread.

Ball State beat IUPUI 69-62 at home Nov 23, outscoring Jaguars 17-8 at foul line; Cardinals have been off for nine days since ending long series losing skid vs Butler, its only win this year vs team ranked above #196; Cardinals are holding opponents to 25.5% behind arc. IUPUI is 2-8 vs D-I teams, 1-3 at home, with three losses by total of 11 points. MAC road favorites of 5 or less points are 5-7 against the pointspread.

                Davidson at Kansas (-13.5, 147)

Kansas expects to have senior guard Tyshawn Taylor back in the lineup for the game against Davidson at the annual M&I Kansas City Shootout at the Sprint Center.

Taylor, who averages 15.9 points and 4.7 assists, is coming back from surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. He was near full speed on Friday at practice. Coach Bill Self said the staff would check for swelling before making a final decision.

Davidson is off to its best start since the 2008-09 season, when the Wildcats began 8-1, but has lost its last two decisions. It’s only the second meeting between the two teams; Kansas survived a 59-57 scare in the Elite Eight in 2008 and went on to win the national championship.

Kansas has won four straight games, including a big home victory over No. 2 Ohio State.

                Pick: Kansas -13.5

                Marquette at LSU (+8, 136.5)

Marquette faces its final non-conference road test when it travels south to face LSU on Monday night. The unbeaten Golden Eagles, who already own a victory at Wisconsin and four neutral-court wins, topped Northern Colorado on Saturday behind 22 points from freshman guard Todd Mayo.

Senior SG Darius Johnson-Odom, who leads Marquette in scoring, is expected to return to the Golden Eagles lineup Monday after being suspended for Saturday's game due to a violation of team rules.

The Tigers have won their last two games despite the absence of Andre Stringer (12.1 ppg), who remains day-to-day after fainting in practice this month. Justin Hamilton (11.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg) has paced the team in Stringer's absence with back-to-back 14-point games.

                Pick: LSU +8

Detroit Red Wings at Edmonton Oilers (+125, 5.5)

The Detroit Red Wings won their 10th consecutive home game Saturday at Joe Louis Arena, slamming the Los Angeles Kings 8-2. Now they’re trying to keep that momentum going on the road, where they are just 7-8 this year.

"We skate, and start on time, and play on our toes," coach Mike Babcock told reporters of the difference at Joe Louis Arena. "We have to play the same way on the road. We're a bit more cautious on the road and we can't be."

At least the offense is clicking. Detroit sits third in the league averaging 3.3 goals per game and has buried 27 goals over the last five contests.

The Red Wings have also won six straight games against the Oilers. This is a lot of road chalk to eat, but this is a tough way for Edmonton to come off an 0-3 road trip.

                  Pick: Red Wings

Philadelphia Flyers at Colorado Avalanche (+115, 5.5)

This may be a long night for the Avalanche and they have the Boston Bruins to thank for it.

Boston put a 6-0 spanking on the Flyers Saturday in a nasty game that featured a number of tussles. The Flyers didn’t do much better in those than they did on the scoreboard.

"We knew what was at stake," Jody Shelley told reporters after taking a beating from Boston’s Zdeno Chara. "You think it's just another game on the schedule, but it's not. It's a big deal, and it's frustrating even more in that sense. You hope guys are fired up. We're all ready, and it just wasn't there. We'll see them again.”

Philadelphia was also hit with another injury. With captain Chris Pronger out for the year and leading scorer Claude Giroux out indefinitely, Philadelphia saw rookie Sean Couturier leave the game after taking a slap shot to the head. He isn’t expected to make the trip to Denver.

All of these injuries are bound to catch up with the Flyers at some point, but they’ll put a good effort in Monday.

                  Pick: Flyers

Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL trends
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

                  HOT TEAM: New Jersey Devils

The low point hit in a four-game span that bridged November to December. Legendary goaltender Martin Brodeur was shaky, at best, the goals on the other end were few and far between, and New Jersey had lost four consecutive games.

But center Travis Zajac is back now from a torn Achilles, and suddenly, the Devils have some life. A 5-3 victory over the Canadiens on Saturday in Montreal was proof positive. Patrik Elias scored two goals -- his 12th and 13th -- and Brodeur made 23 saves en route to their 18th win of the season. Through Saturday, they had won four in a row, and six of the last seven.

Listen, the Devils, like their Hall of Fame netminder, are clearly not what they used to be. We all know that, and we all know that it will be a tough task making the postseason in the Eastern Conference with that roster. But they are showing heart, they now have some health, and if they can get by the rival Rangers on Tuesday in Newark, the confidence may truly continue to snowball.

                  COLD TEAM: Phoenix Coyotes

To be sitting in third place in the ultra-competitive Pacific Division, just two points out of first through Saturday is a good position for this team. But if they have intentions of keeping up with Dallas and San Jose, they need more consistent play, and certainly better decision making than they showed Saturday vs. the Rangers.

Phoenix was a turnover machine versus New York at home, giving the puck away at inopportune times and in costly positions on the ice. It added up to a 3-2 loss, their fourth in the last five games, and their sixth in December.

And if they're going to snap out of it, they need everyone on the same page. This team, after all, has no superstars. There is talent for sure -- Ray Whitney has 28 points and Radim Vrbata has 15 goals -- but if Phoenix isn't one, big, cohesive unit, the Coyotes have no chance against deeper, more seasoned teams like the Sharks and Stars. Until they figure that all out, keep them on your fade radar.

                  OVER PLAY: Philadelphia Flyers

Chris Pronger’s absence will be felt, short term and long. Not only will HBO and its 24-7 Winter Classic reality show team not have Pronger around much more to showcase due to his concussion, the fact remains that he is the team’s captain and still a more-than-solid defenseman.

But that only means that the Flyers -- with all of their offensive firepower -- are now a much better over play than ever before. And they were already pretty good. Sure, they have adequate goaltending with Ilya Bryzgalov and Sergei Bobrovsky, but both have tendencies to let some softies in here and there.

Saturday’s humiliating 6-0 loss to Boston at home was the Flyers’ fourth consecutive over and seventh in the last eight games. In the first three of that four-game stretch, the Flyers scored at least four goals, so the punch is still there, despite the absence of forward Claude Giroux, also to a concussion. And consider this: As long as HBO’s cameras continue to document their run, look for them to continue to want to show off. That’s good news for over players. Philadelphia plays at Colorado on Tuesday.

                  UNDER PLAY: Los Angeles Kings

Tough to give the nod to a team that was just blasted by Detroit, 8-2, on Saturday, but hear us out. The Kings have a new coach in interim John Stevens. And they might even be getting another soon, as reports circulated on Saturday night that they were about to hire Darryl Sutter on a permanent basis.

But either way, the offense hasn’t been there of late, and in that aforementioned Pacific Division, you need all guns blazing to be able to hang. So far, the Kings can’t. In a stretch of games that ended with the whitewash at the hands of the Red Wings, Los Angeles orchestrated an 8-2-3 under run. In December alone, and leading up to Monday’s tilt at Toronto, they had six unders.

Los Angeles has just two players in double-digit goals -- Mike Richards (11) and Anze Kopitar (10) -- and Richards is out with a head injury, so it looks like it might get worse before it gets better for a team that already has 16 unders to its name. More of the same may be in store.

                  SURVEYING THE SCHEDULE:

** If you believe patterns develop within teams through the season, then monitor Winnipeg’s next back-to-back situation carefully. In the last two pair-of-games-in-a-24-hour span, the Jets won Game 1, only to lose Game 2. Well, on Thursday and Friday, the Jets play the Canadiens and Penguins, both at home. Let’s see if the trend continues.

** We mentioned HBO’s 24-7 series, and it’s not just about the Flyers. The Rangers have a role here, too, and there will be plenty of posing for the camera this week, as the rivals arrive. In fact, in a span of four days, beginning on Tuesday in New Jersey, New York will play three games, all against its biggest foes: the Devils, Islanders (Thursday) and Flyers (Friday). They might be a tad tired by the time they take the ice versus Philadelphia.
