Sunday’s betting tips: Saints scoring and streaking

    Who’s hot

NFL: The Texans are 6-0-1 ATS in their last seven overall and 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven home games.

NFL: The Saints are 5-0 ATS in their last five overall 4-0 ATS in their last four against the NFC.

NFL: The over is 7-1-1 in the Lions’ last nine road games and 4-0 in the Raiders’ last four overall.

NHL: The Blues are 4-0 in their last four overall and 4-0 in their last four home games.

NCAAB: Missouri is 4-0 ATS in its last four overall and 4-0 ATS in its last four non-conference games.

    Who’s not

NFL: The Bills are 1-5 ATS in their last six overall and 1-5 ATS in their last six against the AFC.

NFL: The Rams are 3-14 ATS in their last 17 overall and 1-5 ATS in their last six home games.

NFL: The Eagles are 1-8 ATS in their last nine home games.

NHL: The Hurricanes are 2-10 in their last 12 road games.

NCAAB: Rhode Island is 0-5 ATS in its last five overall and 0-5 ATS in its last five non-conference games.

    Key stat

33 – Number of points per game allowed by the Minnesota Vikings in their current five-game losing streak. At the same time, the New Orleans Saints are averaging 31 points per game in their current five-game winning streak. The Saints are traveling to Minnesota on Sunday as nine-point favorites.

    Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

John Skelton could be getting the start for Arizona when the team hosts Cleveland on Sunday afternoon. Kevin Kolb is recovering from a concussion and is listed as questionable. When asked about the possibility of Skelton starting, head coach Ken Whisenhunt said on Saturday, “It looks that way.”

Skelton is 3-1 as Arizona’s starter this season. The Browns, of course, are also dealing with a quarterback injury. Colt McCoy is out after taking the hit from James Harrison and Seneca Wallace will get the nod in McCoy’s absence.

    Biggest game on the slate

New England Patriots at Denver Broncos (9, 45.5)

    Notable quotable

"Just having his presence in the huddle, it changes everything. There are plays that should be called dead or be stopped, and instead you have Vick running around making plays down the field, so it's good to have him back." – Philadelphia Eagles’ running back LeSean McCoy on quarterback Michael Vick, who will be making his second straight start after returning from injury. Philadelphia is a three-point home favorite against the New York Jets.

    Tips and notes

It’s a huge game for both the Detroit Lions and Oakland Raiders in terms of playoff implications. It could feature a smorgasbord of penalties based on the two teams involved, and it is already featuring a smorgasbord of injuries. Oakland running back Darren McFadden has been ruled out with a foot injury, joining receiver Jacoby Ford (foot) on the sideline. The Raiders may have to air it out, and they would be wise to do so with Detroit cornerbacks Chris Houston (knee) and Eric Wright (hamstring) both questionable.

Connecticut freshman guard Ryan Boatright missed the first six games of the season due to NCAA suspension, but he is making up for it in a hurry. In three games Boatright is averaging 16 points and four assists. Against Arkansas on December 3 he had 23 points and six dimes in a 75-62 victory. "Ryan was pretty special," head coach Jim Calhoun said after that contest. "He's not afraid. I don't think he fears making a mistake. I love that kind of player." Boatright will look to keep it going when the Huskies host Holy Cross on Sunday.

All the trends point to a win for the St. Louis Blues at home on Sunday against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Blues have won four in a row overall and four in a row in the head-to-head series. Their previous meeting this season came on November 27, with St. Louis scoring a 2-1 road victory. Furthermore, the Blues are an outstanding 12-3-1 at home while the Blue Jackets are a dismal 3-9-2 on the road.

      Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Six most popular picks and six least popular picks in Hilton handicapping contest, which has 517 contestants, all of whom who pick five NFL games a week against the spread. They put up $1,500 each, so these are serious handicappers........The four teams that already played this weekend are Falcons (45) Jags (20) Dallas (114) Bucs (51)

      6) Seattle Seahawks 102
      5) San Diego Chargers 110
      4) Carolina Panthers 123
      3) New Orleans Saints 136
      2) New England Patriots 139
      1) Cincinnati Bengals 141

      T21) Chicago-Buffalo
      T21) Colts-Cleveland, all 56
      25) Minnesota Vikings 52
      26) Green Bay Packers 48
      27) St Louis Rams 23
      28) Miami Dolphins 19

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

      13) They have a playoff in I-AA college football; none of the kids seem to be traumatized by it; there are three weeks between the semifinals and the national championship game. Interesting concept.

      12) Alabama hoop coach Anthony Grant and Kansas State coach Frank Martin were high school teammates in Florida, now they're both making over a million bucks a year. The two old friends met Saturday night in Kansas City, with Kansas State winning 71-58.

      11) Las Vegas is trying to get the Pac-12 hoop tournament; they already have the Mountain West, WAC and WCC. Addition of Colorado, Utah to the Pac-12 makes Vegas more geographically feasible, plus, who doesn't love to go there anyway? Right now, the Pac-12 tourney is always in LA.

      10) Attendance at Saturday's New Mexico Bowl was 25,762; attendance at the finals of the Texas state high school tournament Friday was 32,314.

      9) 1st hole at the Australian Masters is a 250-yard driveable par-4 that Geoff Ogilvy almost aced Saturday using an iron. Seemed too easy.

      8) UC-Santa Barbara has an NBA-type player in Orlando Johnson, who had 24 points, 10 rebounds in close loss at Washington Friday. Big West is going to be decided by the UCSB-Long Beach State games. Good teams.

      7) Read somewhere Friday that government spent roughly $75M trying to nail Barry Bonds and send him to jail. Hope that number is way off, since all Bonds got is house arrest, and I'm guessing his house is pretty damned nice. Some prosecutor's ego got the best of him/her.

      6) Wouldn't you just love to know how much money Bonds' trainer Greg Anderson got to keep quiet? The guy went to jail to protect Bonds!!!!!!! He had to get serious money to keep his mouth shut.

      5) Why do kids jump early to the NBA? Look at Jared Sullinger hobbling around South Carolina's gym Saturday- thats why. If his foot problems become chronic, he doesn't get a big payday. Look at Greg Oden; kid has not played a full season since high school, but at least he got paid.

      4) If all my knowledge came from watching latenight TV, I'd swear that being bald was worse than having cancer or HIV. Listen to some of those commercials they run- I go get a hat every time I hear one.

      3) Butler/Purdue played their hearts out Saturday, but teams combined to make just 7-18 from foul line in second half of Butler's 67-65 upset win.

      2) If you have Mat Latos on your fantasy baseball team, your team got worse after Latos was traded from the pitcher's paradise in San Diego to the hitter's haven in Cincinnati. Latos just became a lesser pitcher.

      1) Lesson of the Week for you aspiring husbands: Always get a pre-nup. Estimates have Kobe Bryant worth $360M; divorce laws usually give half to each party, which means he will be worth $180M when all is said/done. As I said before, pre-nups can save you mucho dinero.

          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Sunday, December 18

Keep in mind that first semester just ended at most colleges, so transfers are becoming eligible in some places, making things a little trickier......

Princeton won three of its last four games, with last three all decided by 4 or less points; Tigers are making 31.8% from arc, 61.5% from line, not very good. Northeastern hasn't played in 12 days; they lost last three games, scoring 59.3 ppg- they turn ball over 27% of time, which is bad. CAA home teams are 2-5 vs spread if number is less than 5 points, 2-3 if they've home favorites; Ivy League single digit road dogs are 10-4.

Rhode Island is inexpicably 1-9, losing last six games, allowing 83.3 ppg in last three; Rams are horrible on defense- opponents are making 57% of 2-point shots. URI lost to Brown by 9, another Ivy team. Yale is 6-2 vs D-I teams, winning last five, though #174 Vermont was best of five teams. Bulldogs won last three road games, at Army, Sacred Heart and Hartford. Ivy League favorites are 6-7 vs spread, 4-3 on road; Atlantic 14 home underdogs are 3-5 against the spread.

Central Michigan is 4-5 vs D-I teams, 0-3 vs top 100 teams, losing by 29-12-20 points; Chippewas won tough game at home Friday, are one of worst rebounding teams in country (#321 on def. boards). Iowa State is 2-0 vs teams ranked below #200, winning by 32-25 points; they've been off for nine days since beating rival Iowa. MAC double digit road dogs are 8-6 vs spread; Big X home favorites of 15+ points are 7-5.

Wm & Mary is 0-3 vs top 100 teams, losing by 25-31-32 points; they're worst D-I team in America at forcing turnovers. Missouri is crushing teams, with only one of its last eight wins by less than 25 points, but Tigers have rivalry game with Illinois Thursday, could be looking ahead to that. CAA road underdogs of 14+ points are 6-2 vs spread; Big X home favorites of 18+ points are 6-3. Tribe makes just 29% from arc.

LMU is 5-4 vs D-I teams, beating #17 Saint Louis but losing to couple Ivy League teams; they've been off for 8 days since beating #303 Idaho State in OT for second time this season. 7-3 Florida State doesn't have a win by less than 12 points, but they're 0-3 vs teams ranked higher than #118-- bully team. Lions are ranked #188. WCC double digit road dogs are 3-6-1 against spread; ACC home favorites of 13+ points are 5-7.

Virginia won its last six games; they're 2-0 vs top 100 teams, winning by 12 over Michigan, beating George Mason by 20. Oregon lost at Virginia LY by 15; they're 0-2 vs top 60 teams, losing by 14 to both Vanderbilt and BYU. ACC teams are 9-17 vs spread if number is 4 or less points, 6-8 on road; Pac-12 teams are 13-13 if spread is less than 5 points, 2-5 at home. Virginia opponents are making just 26.3% behind arc (#20).

Loyola Md won its last eight games, but A14's #154 George Washington was best of those teams; Greyhounds held last three opponents under 60 points, are #5 offensive rebounding team in nation. St Bonaventure is 4-4 overall, 2-0 vs MAAC teams, winning by 6 at Siena, by 19 over rival Canisius. Bonnies are 3-0 when they score 65+ points, 1-4 when they don't. MAAC road underdogs of 11 or less points are 10-5 vs spread; Atlantic 14 home favorites of 7 or less points are 10-2.

4-3 Eastern Illinois lost by 7 to Indiana State, only team they've played ranked abouve #190; they've been off for eight days since losing to rival Western Illinois. 9-1 Northwestern beat Central Connecticut yesterday by 6, has date with once-beaten Creighton on deck; Wildcats are 3-0 vs teams ranked below #200, winning by 24-30-25 points. OVC road dogs of 12+ points are 13-8 vs spread; Big Dozen home favorites of 15+ points are 11-6-1.

Montana State is 3-4 vs D-I teams, 2-2 vs teams ranked below #200; Bobcats have been off for week sonce losing at home to Cal-Riverside. Pepperdine is making just 38% of 2-point shots, meaning they take lot of forced shots at end of shot clock; they beat two of best three teams they played, but are 2-3 vs worst five. Virginia Cavaliers at Oregon Ducks (+2, 122)

Virginia will be playing its first true road game of the season when it travels to Eugene on Sunday.

"Some of the things you get away with at home can be good enough, but when you get on the road against some talented teams and just in conference play, you've got to be real solid," said Cavaliers’ head coach Tony Bennett. "It's got to be maybe even better than good. It's got to be close to your best."

The Cavs have seemingly been at their best in the early stages of this year. They are 8-1 overall (6-0 at home and 2-1 at neutral sites). In the midst of a current six-game winning streak, Virginia most recently played on December 6 and hammered a solid George Mason team by 20 points.

The return of senior forward Mike Scott has been a huge boost for an experienced Cavalier squad. Scott, who played just 10 games last season before being sidelined with an ankle injury, leads the team in both points (15.3 ppg) and rebounds (9.1 ppg).

Oregon, meanwhile, is 6-2 and 5-0 at home. The Ducks’ losses have come at Vanderbilt and on a neutral court against BYU.

              Pick: Virginia

Oral Roberts Golden Eagles vs. Xavier Musketeers (-6.5, 130)

Xavier is set to take the court for the first time since the ugly last-second brawl with Cincinnati on December 10.

The result of the carnage, at least for the Musketeers: they will be without Landen Amos, Tu Holloway, Mark Lyons, and Dezmine Wells. Holloway, Lyons, and Wells are all key contributors and they are three of the team’s four leading scorers.

That means the burden will fall on center Kenny Frease; yes, the same Kenny Frease whose face got beat up by Yancy Gates during the fracas. Frease averages 9.6 points per game and he leads the team in rebounds (6.2) and blocks (2.4).

“I told our guys we have another great opportunity to beat a ranked team, and I don’t care how many of their guys will be out of the game,” said head coach Scott Sutton noted. “I know it’s going to be an emotional game for the guys who will be playing.”

It certainly was for Cincinnati’s first post-brawl appearance, as the Bearcats took care of business at Wright State by 20 points. Look for Xavier to bounce back in similar fashion.

              Pick: Xavier

Ice picks: Sunday's best NHL bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Carolina Hurricanes at Florida Panthers (-177, 5.5)

The Panthers have cooled off just a bit, but they are still 17-9-6 overall. Although Friday’s shootout win over Calgary was just their first victory in four games, they have at least earned points in three of their last four.

Prior to Friday, the Panthers had been just 1-4 in shootouts this season. Losing another one may have left Florida in a funk heading into Sunday’s game against Carolina.

“It’s nice to get the monkey off our back with the shootout,” said Stephen Weiss, who netted the game-winner. “There’s always confidence. If you lose that, you’re lost. We know we were going to turn the page on that. It was just a matter of time."

With their confidence back on track, the Panthers should be able to take care of business at home. They have lost in regulation just twice in 14 games with home-ice advantage (7-2-5). At the same time, Carolina has won only four times in 16 road appearances (4-9-3).

In their lone previous meeting this season, Florida prevailed 3-1 at Carolina on November 29.

                Pick: Panthers

Calgary Flames at Chicago Blackhawks (-193, 5.5)

After a relatively slow start to the season, the Blackhawks are positively on fire. They have won four in a row and have taken points in seven straight and nine of 10.

Calgary will have to watch out for Marian Hossa, who has heated up during this four-game stretch. Hossa is on a four-game point streak of his own and has tallied eight points (three goals, five assists) in this span.

Patrick Sharp continues to light up the stat sheet with points in eight consecutive outings. In his last 10 games, Sharp has 15 points (10 goals, five assists).

The Flames do not figure to halt Chicago’s barrage; not on the road. The Blackhawks are 10-2-3 at home this season and the home team has won seven consecutive games in this head-to-head series. Calgary is 1-10 in its last 11 trips to Chicago.

                Pick: Blackhawks
