Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

BYU will be without sixth man Stephen Rogers for Saturday’s home game against undefeated and No. 7-ranked Baylor. Rogers just underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus and will miss two to four weeks. The 6-8 forward averages 9.9 points and is a deadly outside shooter. In his absence, freshman Damarcus Harrison will get more minutes. Still, the 8-2 Cougars are favored by 1.

With three games left in the regular season, a Las Vegas Hilton SuperBook prop has the Green Bay Packers as -190 favorites to go undefeated. Green Bay is favored by two touchdowns at hapless Kansas City on Sunday before closing at home against NFC North rivals Chicago and Detroit. The Packers, who just lost No. 1 wideout Greg Jennings to a knee injury, should sew up the NFC’s top seed this Sunday. Then they must decide whether to put starters at risk against desperate teams who need to win to make the playoffs. Green Bay has won 19 straight, including playoffs.

Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger returned to a limited practice Friday as he nurses a sprained left ankle. He’s getting non-stop treatment in an effort to play Monday night in San Francisco. If Big Ben can’t play, 37-year-old Charlie Batch would start. Center Maurkice Pouncey (ankle) seems doubtful after failing to practice Friday. Pittsburgh definitely won’t have vicious-hitting LB James Harrison, whose one-game suspension was upheld.

The Miami Heat has signed 41-year-old coach Erik Spoelstra to a contract extension. Spoelstra was entering the last year of his deal after leading Miami to the NBA finals last season. Thanks to LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, the Heat are again favored to win the title this season. Miami is listed at 2/1 at most books, followed by the Lakers at 9/2 and the Bulls and Thunder at 15/2 each.

13) Memo to directors of televised basketball games: If clock is running, always have the camera on the ball, especially in the last 5:00 of a close game. Never, ever take the camera off the ball, especially to show fans or coaches watching what we want to watch. Trust me on this.

12) There are 35 bowl games this year; in 1969, there were eight, none of which was called the Idaho Potato Bowl.

11) Craig Ehlo, who played 14 years in NBA, and then was a broadcaster when he stopped playing, is now a 1st-year assistant coach with Eastern Washington. He will probably have a head coaching job pretty quickly, if he wants one, which should make the current coach at Washington State (Ehlo’s alma mater) at least a little nervous.

10) I’m guessing additional NFL Thursday night games will be wrapped in between the bye weeks in October, which is OK. Just don’t think football games were meant to be played on three days’ rest.

9) UNLV’s Justin Hawkins also played two years of volleyball in high school. I think schools in the east miss out by not having volleyball as a more prominent sport. Volleyball is a good compliment to basketball.

8) There are ten football coaches in the Big X. Kansas’ Charlie Weis has the 3rd-highest salary. I’m guessing Mike Gundy’s agent might be calling Stillwater about that pretty soon.

7) You know those Fatheads, the big stickers of players you can put on a wall? Company is owned by Dan Gilbert, owner of Cleveland Cavaliers.

6) Mets signed journeyman lefty pitcher Chuck James this week; once a big prospect with Atlanta, James was 11-4, 3.78 in 2006, but since then is 13-15, 5.08 and hasn’t started a game since ’08. Mets have a brand-new $850M ballpark, but run their franchie like they’re the Pirates.

5) Lot of people in Pittsburgh are very annoyed that football coach Todd Graham left after one year to go coach Arizona State. Making it worse is that Graham informed his players via mass text massage. Not classy. If Graham is smart, he’ll blame it on his wife hating Pittsburgh, whether that is true or not.

4) Pitt Panthers will now have had four head coaches in 14 months. The Steelers have had three head coaches since 1969.

3) Mitt Romney has supposedly raised $10M just in New York, where Jets’ owner Woody Johnson is one of his biggest backers. $10M buys a lot of TV commercials. Can't wait.

2) ACC is going to go to 18 conference games next year, imitating what the Big East does. What it does it helps RPI for league members, instead of playing two more non-league games against cruddy teams.

1) Twins gave Josh Willingham $21M for three years; he hit ball fairly well for the A’s, but he certainly was no difference maker. After 35 years of losing players via free agency, both great, good and average, I’m now numb when a guy like Willingham leaves for greener pastures. Good luck to him. We’ll be just as bad with someone else out in leftfield.

Villanova won six of last seven games vs St Joe's, winning last three in this inner-city rivalry by 3-8-11 points, but Wildcats are just 2-4 in last six games, losing only true road game at Temple by 11. Young, improved St Joe's is 4-2 vs top 100 teams, giving Creighton its first loss week ago. Villanova has no seniors in its rotation. Atlantic 14 favorites of 6 or less points are 16-9 vs spread; Big East underdogs of 6 or less are 4-10-1.

Mississippi State heads north for its first true road game to face Detroit team they beat 82-76 LY at home; Bulldogs have beaten Texas A&M, Arizona on neutral floors. Titans won two of last three games, are much better team since Holman became eligible two games ago; they lost by 8 at Alabama in last game, a decent showing. SEC road favorites are 8-7, 4-1 if spread is less than 5 points. Horizon home underdogs are 3-5

UNLV is already making third trip east of Rockies, losing at Wisconsin by 11, Wichita by 19; Rebels lost 73-62 to Illinois in NCAA's 1st round last March. 10-0 Illini beat Gonzaga by 7 in only game vs top 80 foe so far this season. Syracuse is outside NY State for first time this year; they beat NC State 65-59 in LY's meeting in Carrier Dome. First true road game for Orange squad that beat Va Tech by 11, Stanford by 6 in NYC. NC State is 1-3 vs top 100 teams, losing by 7-11-4 points- they trailed by 18 in the one win. Big East road favorites are 15-12 vs spread, ACC home underdogs are 1-6. Syracuse is #2 in country at forcing turnovers (29.5%). State is making only 33.9% from arc, not such good news vs 2-3 zone.

6-1 Kansas State's last two games both went OT, losing to West Virginia in Wichita, struggling at home to beat #195 North Florida; Wildcats make only 27.8% from arc. Alabama is 3-2 vs top 100 teams, losing by 12 at Dayton in only true road game; this isn't a true away game, but playing K-State in KC is definitely a road game. Tide is making 25.3% behind the arc (333rd). Big X teams are 11-5-1 vs spread if number is 4 or less points; SEC teams are 16-5. Two coaches were HS teammates.

New Mexico is 4-1 away from home, 2-1 vs top 100 teams, losing by 9 to New Mexico State, beating Washington State by 10, Missouri State by 16. Oklahoma State is 0-3 vs top 60 teams, losing by 15-2-6 points, but they did win by 5 at #64 Missouri State, young Cowboys' only win in four games away from Stillwater. Arizona Wildcats vs. Gonzaga Bulldogs (-3.5, 138)

This game is being played in Seattle, technically a neutral court but definitely an edge for Mark Few’s team.

Another big advantage is in the middle, where Wildcats center Jesse Perry gives up five inches to Gonzaga 7-footer Robert Sacre. Sacre shoots nearly 10 free throws a game. He had nine points and 10 rebounds in the Bulldogs’ 67-61 win over Oral Roberts on Thursday.

Arizona is vulnerable on the boards, ranking 149th nationally with 30.7 per game.

The Wildcats didn’t finish finals until Thursday, so they haven’t gotten good preparation for this showcase game.

Gonzaga is 4-1 ATS in its last five neutral-site games. Because the Bulldogs failed to blow out ORU, this number is a little short.

Pick: Gonzaga

UNC-Wilmington at VCU (-14.5, 129.5)

VCU does not resemble the squad that made a Cinderella run to the Final Four last season, but the Rams (6-3) have righted themselves after a 3-3 start.

In last week’s 73-51 dismantling of city rival Richmond, sophomore Rob Brandenburg heeded coach Shaka Smart’s advice to attack the basket and scored 14 second-half points after going scoreless before halftime. Bradford Burgess, a 6-6 guard who creates matchup problems, also scored 14 in the game.

The win was VCU’s seventh straight sellout, as the Final Four run has translated to a raucous environment.

The 2-5 Seahawks, who shoot 27.9 percent from beyond the arc, won’t be able to keep up.

Ohio State Buckeyes at South Carolina Gamecocks, noon ET, ESPN (14.5, 128.5)

Buckeyes freshman forward Sam Thompson may have finally found a role: Defensive stopper. After playing a mere minute against Kansas, he replaced Lenzelle Smith Jr. and Jordan Sibert against South Carolina Upstate to shut down their star scorer Torrey Craig.

Thompson responded by not only slowing down Craig but also scoring eight points with two assists and two blocked shots.

“When he called my name, I just wanted to get in there and do what he asked me to do,” Thompson told reporters. “(Craig) at that point, I think, had scored eight straight points, so I just wanted to get in there and make it difficult for him, use my length, use my athleticism.”

Butler Bulldogs vs. Purdue Boilermakers, 2 p.m., CBS, Conseco Fieldhouse, Indianapolis (8.5, 128.5)

Boilermakers coach Matt Painter needs more from freshman Jacob Lawson. The freshman is averaging just 4.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per game and is close to cracking the starting lineup, but Painter is reluctant to make the switch to a player who isn’t crashing the boards.

"We've had guys that start the game that don't play like starters,” Painter told the West Lafayette Journal and Courier. “It's going to work its way out who finishes the game. That's more important. Jacob needs to rebound more."

Temple Owls at Texas Longhorns, 2:30 p.m., ESPN2 (-5.5, 139)

Longhorns freshman Jonathan Holmes needs to keep his head in the game. The forward is a key part of the team’s guard-oriented attack, but has struggled in games where he battled foul trouble. Holmes is averaging 9.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per game this season but drawing tough frontcourt defensive assignments can throw him off his game.

"Jonathan has gotten himself in foul trouble twice lately," coach Rick Barnes told the Austin Statesman. In a previous game, "he did not handle it well. He came back into the game and had already checked out. He's one of those guys who wants to do everything right."

Memphis Tigers at Louisville Cardinals, 4 p.m., CBS (-8.5, 136)

It’s Ferrakohn Hall time. The junior forward transfer from Seton Hall is finally eligible to play as the Tigers prepare to face a top ten regional rival. Hall, who averaged 5.1 points and 3.4 rebounds over 10 games for the Pirates last year, should fill a large void left by forward D.J. Stephens, who could miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

"He hasn't played in a while, so, you know, don't expect him to be Superman his first game back," sophomore guard Will Barton told the Memphis Commercial Appeal. "He's looked good (in practice), hitting shots and trying his best to defend. He's been rebounding and playing hard.

UNLV Runnin’ Rebels at Illinois Fighting Illini, 5 p.m., Big Ten Network (Pick, 138)

Illinois coach Bruce Weber isn’t trying to fool anyone. Even when the he went to a four-guard lineup late in a win over Coppin State, he was sure his team knew exactly where to go with the ball: Down low to center Meyers Leonard. The 7-foot-1 sophomore is averaging 13.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game and flashed a chippy edge when he picked up a technical against the Eagles.

"I think our guys are smart enough at that point of the game to know where the ball needs to go," Weber told reporters.

Syracuse Orange at North Carolina State Wolfpack, 6:30 p.m., ESPN2 (7, 144)

Sophomore center Fab Melo is finally starting to get it. After shedding 30 pounds during the offseason, his sleek figure enabled the 7-footer to drop a career-high 19 points against George Washington last week. Coach Jim Boeheim, however, has been quick to credit his improved defense, which includes taking 10 charges through 10 games.

“He’s making good plays, good defensive plays,” Boeheim told the Syracuse Post-Standard. “He’s getting to the boards better. He’s blocking shots, controlling the area around the basket. His conditioning’s much better.”

Villanova Wildcats at St. Joseph’s Hawks, 8 p.m., CBS Sports Network (-4.5, 139)

It’s going to be a rude awakening for a very young Villanova team. The Wildcats don’t have a scholarship senior on the roster and are playing five freshmen, including four who make up the majority of the team’s bench minutes. The youngsters flunked their first test when they were dominated in a 78-67 loss at Temple.

“(The game) is going to give them a little different taste in some unfriendly environments,” Villanova coach Jay Wright told Philly.com. “It’s going to be crazy. But that’s good. I think they’re looking forward to it.”

Alabama Crimson Tide at Kansas State Wildcats, 10 p.m., ESPNU (1, 128)

Wildcats coach Frank Martin says his team needs better leaders. Kansas State jumped out to a 12-2 lead over North Florida but lackadaisical play had the team trailing by as many as nine in the second half before pulling out an overtime victory. Martin also has criticized the team’s recent poor practices.

"We were interested a month ago," Martin said. "We've been on a little bit of a slide here. I'm all about preparation. We've got a little immaturity on our team and our leadership has to get better. I have to do a better job of guiding those young kids that are trying to lead."

Injuries have forced Columbus to use defenseman Aaron Johnson as a wing recently. The Blue Jackets have scored five regulation goals in their last three games.

In Thursday’s 2-1 home loss to Los Angeles, Columbus went 0 for 3 on the power play and mustered just 25 shots for the game.

Steven Stamkos’ 19th goal lifted the Lightning to a 5-4 overtime win at home over Calgary on Thursday. But Tampa Bay doesn’t exactly light it up on the road.

Vancouver Canucks at Toronto Maple Leafs (N/A)

The resurgent Canucks continue a road trip at the Air Canada Centre and they’ll have the good fortune of meeting a potentially tired Toronto team that played in Buffalo Friday night.

A milestone on the back line

Who would have thought Toronto defenseman Dion Phaneuf would already be past 500 career games? But that’s the number that the 2003 first-round draft choice reached Tuesday night, when the Maple Leafs defeated Carolina, 2-1.

But age is not slowing the Toronto captain down. Entering Friday’s tilt with the Sabres, Phaneuf had three goals and 18 points and was a minus player only once in December, with the Maple Leafs trying to keep pace with Boston in the Northeast Division.

And the hits - perhaps the strongest suit to this game - just keep on coming. In fact, in this month, and prior to Buffalo Friday, he had at least four hits in all of Toronto’s five games.

Ryan’s rolling

Healthy again, Vancouver forward Ryan Kesler has turned his season around. And while the totals he recorded last year in his breakthrough won’t likely be matched - 32 goals and 73 points last season - Kesler is back on his game and the Canucks have followed.

Kesler, who had offseason hip surgery, now has points in nine of his last 12 games and he has eight points in December alone. In Thursday’s 4-3 loss to Carolina, he had an assist and three shots on 30 shifts.

It hasn’t been the easiest of months for Toronto goaltender James Reimer. But he may have turned a corner in his nailbiter win over Cam Ward and the Hurricanes Tuesday.

In fact, it was his first win of the month in four tries, and it was also the first game in December in which at least three goals didn’t find their way into the Toronto net. Reimer is having a decent season for the Maple Leafs. Headed into Friday’s game, he was 5-2-2 with a 2.75 GAA, a .900 save percentage and one shutout.

History

The Canucks have won eight straight in this series, dating back to Jan. 10, 2006. Last season, Vancouver took both installments: 5-3 on Nov. 13, and 4-1 on Dec. 18. And the Canucks have gone over in five of their last seven games.

Edmonton Oilers at San Jose Sharks (-190, 5.5)

The road has not been kind to the fading, fleeting Oilers, who close out a three-game trip in San Jose, having already lost the first two contests by a combined score of 7-2. Just what the circling Sharks want to see.

San Jose starts to find their way

It’s tough to look at the standings in the Pacific Division and get a real grasp on the long term, because things are so tight. A team can go from being in first place and owning the No. 3 seed in the playoffs on one day, and on another day, that team might be on the outside of the postseason picture looking in.

San Jose is a good example. Just two points out of first place through Thursday night, the Sharks would only have been the No. 8 seed if the season ended that night.

But the important thing for the Sharks, is that they're not scoreboard watching. And maybe Thursday's 5-4 comeback win over Colorado, in which Ryane Clowe and Michal Handzus scored, will be the right elixir to what was previously a 2-5-2 stretch.

Taylor made

Edmonton forward Taylor Hall made a grand return to the lineup Thursday, albeit in a losing effort. In a 4-2 defeat in Phoenix, Hall scored two power-play goals and showed little effects of a lingering left shoulder injury.

Hall, who last played on Nov. 26, was missed dearly in Edmonton. But he took a regular shift versus the Coyotes and finished with 18:38 of ice time. It appears as if he's back - and not a moment too soon.

Leave it to Logan

San Jose center Logan Couture is doing a little bit of everything this season, and his totals show it. He scored the winner against the Avalanche Thursday night and now has 12 goals and 23 points.

It doesn't stop there. On a team that's up and down defensively, Couture is a plus-10 with only six minutes in penalties. Against Colorado, he took 28 shifts, had two points on four shots, and was a plus-3. Not bad.

History

San Jose has won three of the last four in this series, yet Edmonton pulled out a 5-2 win in the last meeting: Jan. 13, 2011. In five of the last six games between these two teams, the over hit. And the Oilers have gone 4-2-1 over in their last seven games.
