Week 14 Preview: Rams at Seahawks

    ST. LOUIS RAMS (2-10)

    at SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (5-7)

    Kickoff: Monday, 8:30 p.m. EDT
    Line: Seattle -10, Total: 36.5

Surging Seattle couldn’t ask for a better matchup as the Rams and their pathetic offense pay CenturyLink Field a visit on Monday night.

This is probably not the Monday Night Football matchup you waited all week for, especially if QB Sam Bradford can’t play for the Rams. He is questionable with a high ankle sprain. Their A.J. Feeley-led offense had an anemic 157 total yards in the 26-0 blanking by San Francisco last week. And with Seattle playing at home with a few more days rest after Thursday’s win, this could be another ugly result for the Rams. Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch has been running like a man possessed, gaining 591 yards and 5 TD in his past five games, and St. Louis has the worst rushing defense in the NFL (158 YPG). Also, since 2005, Seattle is 12-1 SU (10-3 ATS) against the Rams, including a dominating 24-7 win three weeks ago in St. Louis. All signs point to a comfortable win for SEATTLE.

This three-star FoxSheets trend also sides with the Seahawks:

Play Against - Road underdogs of 3.5 to 10 points (ST. LOUIS) - after scoring 14 points or less last game against opponent after scoring 30 points or more last game. (43-13 over the last 10 seasons.) (76.8%, +28.7 units. Rating = 3*).

St. Louis has played seven of its past nine games Under the Total, and this three-star FoxSheets trend expects another offensive struggle with the final score coming in UNDER the total.

Play Under - Any team against the total (SEATTLE) - versus division opponents, off an upset win by 10 points or more as an underdog. (36-11 over the last 5 seasons.) (76.6%, +23.9 units. Rating = 3*).

With Feeley (thumb) ruled out, Tom Brandstater would start if Bradford can’t play. Brandstater, drafted in 2009 out of Fresno State, has never played in the NFL. St. Louis has dropped three straight games and is now 2-10 (both SU and ATS) on the year. The team has scored just 8.7 PPG on the road in 2011 while allowing 23.8 PPG to the home teams. RB Steven Jackson has clearly been the team’s best offensive player (994 total yards), but opposing defenses have really focused on stopping Jackson lately. In the past three weeks, Jackson has carried the ball 42 times for 125 yards (3.0 YPC), and he has not found the end zone in five straight games. However, Jackson has gained 1,426 total yards and 7 TD in 14 lifetime meetings with Seattle. Leading WR Brandon Lloyd saw his three-game TD streak end last Sunday when Feeley targeted him just two times against the 49ers. St. Louis has to be careful with turnovers, as the team has nine giveaways in the past four weeks while Seattle has 12 takeaways in this same four-game span.

The Seahawks have won three of four games, and could easily be riding a four-game win streak had they not blown a 10-point, fourth-quarter lead at home to Washington two weeks ago. Lynch has become the focal point of this offense, but the team still needs QB Tarvaris Jackson (10 TD, 12 INT) to perform at a higher level. He certainly reached that higher level last Thursday night when he completed 13-of-16 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown. With star WR Sidney Rice done for the year, Jackson will continue to spread the wealth in terms of targets. The Seahawks usually dominate in their home stadium, but are only 3-3 (4-2 ATS) in Seattle this season.

Seattle Seahawks Host St. Louis Rams Monday Night Football

Last year, the second meeting between the St. Louis Rams and the Seattle Seahawks determined the NFC West title. The Seahawks (5-7) emerged victorious and made the playoffs while the Rams (2-10) looked to be a team on the rise with higher expectations for this season.

St. Louis has struggled with injuries to several key players and been one of the NFL’s biggest disappointments, with second-year quarterback Sam Bradford missing three games already. Bradford is currently dealing with a high-ankle sprain and could miss another game when his Rams visit Seattle’s CenturyLink Field on Monday Night Football.

Game time is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. (ET) with television coverage provided by ESPN. There is currently no line available according to the Don Best odds screen due to St. Louis’ QB situation.

Not only is Bradford’s status up in the air, but backup A.J. Feeley (thumb) also did not practice on Wednesday. Tom Brandstater has been taking snaps with the first-team offense, and the team added Kellen Clemens off waivers after he was released by the Houston Texans. Brandstater has never taken an NFL snap and was recently promoted from the practice squad.

The Seahawks have also dealt with injuries throughout the season, but they are playing their best football right now. They have earned three of their five wins in the past four weeks, capped by a 31-14 rout of the Philadelphia Eagles last Thursday night. They have had extra time to prepare for a banged-up Rams team and hope running back Marshawn Lynch does not cool off following his torrid stretch.

Lynch has averaged 118.2 yards over the last five games, and he is coming off a season-high 148 on 22 carries against the Eagles. He also had two touchdowns against Philadelphia and has scored at least one in seven of the past eight games he has played.

Seattle’s offensive line lost rookie tackles John Moffitt and James Carpenter to knee injuries last month and former first-round draft pick Russell Okung just went on injured reserve with a torn pectoral muscle. That has made Lynch’s strong play of late even more impressive, especially since opposing teams are keying on him. Wide receiver Sidney Rice was also placed on IR last week due to a concussion.

The Rams have dropped eight of the last nine meetings with the Seahawks both straight-up and against the spread. They are also 1-10 ATS in their past 11 games against NFC opponents and 1-7 ATS in their previous eight away from home. Seattle is 6-2 ATS in its past eight home games, and the ‘over’ has cashed in 14 of the team’s last 18 games against NFC foes.

The weather forecast for Seattle on Monday calls for a high temperature of 40 under partly cloudy skies, cooling down to 34 at night.

      MNF Betting Notes

      December 11, 2011

St. Louis (2-10 SU, 4-8 ATS) at Seattle (5-7 SU, 7-5 ATS)

      Skinny

The Seahawks have an outside chance to earn a wild card spot in the NFC playoffs but they’ll need to win out and get some help along the way as well. Seattle looked sharp last Thursday when it beat Philadelphia 31-14 at home. The win could’ve been their fourth straight but in Week 12 the Seahawks blew a double-digit lead at home en route to a 23-17 loss to the Redskins. After starting the season 0-6, the Rams showed some life by winning two of three, which including a 31-21 victory at home against New Orleans. Since that three-game stretch, St. Louis had dropped three in a row both straight up and against the spread.

      ATS Angles

The Rams are 2-10 ATS this season
The Rams have gone 1-5 both SU and ATS on the road, the lone win coming against Cleveland (13-12)
The Rams have scored more than 20 points on two occasions this season
The Rams have seen the ‘under’ go 8-3-1 this season, including 0-5-1 on the road
The Seahawks are 7-4-1 ATS this season
The Seahawks have gone 3-3 SU and 4-2 ATS at home
The Seahawks have seen the ‘over’ go 4-2 at home
      Odds

The opener was sent out at Seattle -9, with a total of 37. Currently the number is 10 at most shops, with one major offshore pushing 11 as of late Sunday. The total is still hovering between 36 and 37 points.

Seattle has been a favorite (-3) once this season and it lost at home to Washington, 23-17.

St. Louis has been a double-digit underdog four times in 2011, and its gone 1-3 both SU and ATS. The lone win and cover against the Saints.

      Injury Notes

Sam Bradford (ankle) practiced on Saturday for the Rams but the quarterback is listed as ‘doubtful’ in most reports. Backup A.J. Feely (thumb) is also listed as ‘doubtful’ which means Tom Brandstarter could be the starter. College followers will recall his days with Fresno State, where he was decent. However, he hasn’t had a snap in the NFL.

      Head-to-Head Notes

Seattle has won 12 of 13 against St. Louis, including the first meeting this season. In the last four trips to the Great Northwest, the Rams have been outscored 114-25. Four of the last five in this series has gone ‘under’ the total.

      2011
Seattle 24 at St. Louis 7 (Seahawks +3, Under 40.5)

      2010
Seattle 16 vs. St. Louis 6 (Seahawks +4, Under 42)
St. Louis 20 vs. Seattle 3 (Rams -2.5, Under 40)

Seattle 27 at St. Louis 17 (Seahawks -3.5, Over 42.5)
Seattle 28 vs. St. Louis (Seahawks -7.5, Under 43)

The ‘over’ has gone 7-6-1 on MNF this season and is on a 4-1 run the last five weeks

What bettors need to know: St. Louis Rams at Seattle Seahawks
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Rams at Seattle Seahawks (-10, 36.5)

THE STORY: The last time the St. Louis Rams squared off with the Seattle Seahawks, the NFC West title and a berth in the playoffs were on the line. The stakes will be considerably lower when the Rams visit Seattle on Monday night. The Seahawks, who are making their second straight appearance in prime time, still have a fleeting chance at a wild card slot while the Rams have already assured themselves of double-digit losses for the fourth time in the past five seasons. Seattle has dominated the rivalry with St. Louis, winning the last 12 of 13 overall and six straight at CenturyLink Field.

          TV: ESPN, 8:30 p.m. ET.

LINE: Seahawks -10, O/U 37. Oddsmakers had Seattle set around -9.5 at the open, so it's up about half a point since then. The total is sitting around 36.5 or 37.

ABOUT THE RAMS (2-10): St. Louis bottomed out in last week’s 26-0 loss at San Francisco. The league’s lowest-scoring team managed a season-worst 157 yards of total offense and lost backup QB A.J. Feeley to a broken thumb on his throwing hand. With starter Sam Bradford still hampered by a high ankle sprain, St. Louis may have to turn to untested Tom Brandstater, who has never played a down in the NFL. However, Bradford did participate in Saturday's workout. Running back Steven Jackson was limited to 42 yards in a 24-7 loss to the Seahawks last month.

ABOUT THE SEAHAWKS (5-7): RB Marshawn Lynch has been the catalyst for the turnaround in Seattle, which has won three of its last four games. Lynch has ripped off four 100-yard games in the last five and has scored a touchdown in eight consecutive games. The only game in which he failed to reach 100 in the last five came against the Rams, when he went for 88 yards on 27 carries. Much-maligned QB Tarvaris Jackson had his best game in the 31-14 rout of the Eagles, going 13 of 16 for 190 yards and a TD.

          TRENDS:

          - St. Louis is 3-13 against the spread in its last 16 games overall.
          - Seattle is 6-2 against the spread in its last eight home games.
          - The over is 5-0 in Seattle's last five home games.
          - St. Louis is 1-8 against the spread in its last nine meetings with Seattle.

          EXTRA POINTS:

          1. Lynch has rushed for 591 yards in the past five games, the most in the NFL.

          2. Rams DE Chris Long has a six-game sack streak, collecting nine in that span.

          3. In the last four meetings in Seattle, the Seahawks have outscored the Rams 114-25.

PREDICTION: Seahawks 27, Rams 10. St. Louis’ woes in the Pacific Northwest continue.

            Monday, December 12

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tale of the tape: St. Louis Rams at Seattle Seahawks
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Rams at Seattle Seahawks (-10, 36.5)

            Offense

St. Louis’ offense remains up in the air with starting quarterback Sam Bradford and backup A.J. Feely both questionable and it’s not like the Rams were tearing it up to begin with. They picked up a season-low 157 yards in last week’s 26-0 loss to San Francisco and average only 11.7 points per game this year.

Steven Jackson is normally the highlight of this offense and is averaging a career-high 4.6 yards per carry this season, but he has been held to just 41.6 rushing yards over the last three games.

Seattle’s offense also centers around its running back. Marshawn Lynch picked up just 261 rushing yards through his first six games of the year, but has rebounded to post an NFL-best 591 yards since Week 9. He went off for a season-high 148 yards and added a couple of touchdowns in last week’s win over Philadelphia.

Outside of Lynch, this offense isn’t anything to write home about either, averaging only 298.5 total yards per game (28th in the NFL).

            Edge: Seahawks

            Defense

Seattle’s pass defense ranks just 20th in the league, but is improving quickly. The Seahawks have picked off 10 passes in the last six games and are giving up about 220 passing yards per contest over that stretch. Meanwhile, the run defense held Frank Gore to just 59 yards on 22 attempts last week and normally allows only 103.7 rushing yards per game this season.

Chris Long is an immerging star for the Rams and sits tied for third in the league with 12 sacks, helping to hold St. Louis’ opposition to just 208.4 passing yards per game. However, the Rams still give up 24.7 points per game and have the worst rushing defense in the league, allowing 157.8 yards per game on the ground.

            Edge: Seahawks

            Special teams

St. Louis kicker Josh Brown has had a tough year, missing four of his 19 field goals with a long of 49 yards on the year, while Steven Hauschka has missed only three of his 21 attempts for Seattle with a long of 52 yards.

Seattle kick returner Leon Washington is a major weapon averaging 24.2 yards per attempt on kickoffs and 9.9 yards on punts. St. Louis’ Quinn Porter averages 22.2 yards per kickoff return but his longest return of the year went for just 32 yards.

            Edge: Seahawks

            Word on the street

"When a guy like that is working that hard and you know what he can do, if we get on our guys and stay on them he's going to do the rest of the work. He gives us a spark, and he doesn't need much." – Seattle left guard Robert Gallery told the team's official website about Lynch.

“While we are in their stadium it’s going to be really loud, so we’re going to help out and make sure that we try to calm down their pass rush. Got to keep those guys guessing.” - St. Louis running back Steven Jackson about the club’s game plan in Seattle.
