Notes and tips

The Montreal Canadiens acquired Tomas Kaberle from the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday for fellow defenseman Jaroslav Spacek. Despite posting four points in his last two games, Kaberle has disappointed during his first season with the Hurricanes. The 33-year-old has collected just nine assists and is a minus-12 in 29 games. The 37-year-old Spacek, who is currently on injured reserve with an upper body issue, has three assists and two penalty minutes in 12 games this season. Spacek hasn't played since Nov. 14, but is expected to return as soon as this weekend.

St. Louis Rams quarterbacks Sam Bradford and A.J. Feeley sat out practice again Friday, making it increasingly likely both players will sit out Monday's game against Seattle. Oddsmakers have the Rams set as 9.5-point underdogs. Third-string quarterback Tom Brandstater, who has never taken a snap in an NFL game, could be in line to make the start. However, Brandstater split snaps during Friday's practice with newly signed Kellen Clemens, who was claimed off waivers from the Houston Texans. Clemens does have experience as a starter, appearing in 25 games with the New York Jets over parts of five seasons. Bradford is dealing with a high ankle sprain while Feeley suffered a broken bone in his thumb in last week's loss to San Francisco.

Army vs. Navy: What bettors need to know

Army Black Knights vs. Navy Midshipmen (-7, 58)

The 112th Army-Navy is the only FBS game on the board Saturday and will generate plenty of betting action.

The Midshipmen (4-7, 6-5 ATS) have won nine straight against the Black Knights (3-8, 5-6 ATS) by an average of 22.5 points per game. The nine-game run is the longest streak in series history. Navy has covered the spread in seven of the last nine meetings.

Navy has looked like the superior team again this year and has played better competition. The Midshipmen’s opponents were a combined 58-46. Army’s opponents went 48-55.

Per usual, both squads feature potent ground games. Army leads the nation in rushing at 350.9 yards and needs 140 yards against Navy to become the first team at West Point to rush for 4,000 yards in a season. The Blacks Knights have put up prolific numbers, despite being without starting quarterback Trent Steelman for much of the second half of the season.

Steelman is expected to start against Navy, but isn’t thought to be 100 percent. Freshman Angel Santiago and senior Max Jenkins will backup Steelman.

Both teams have had ample time to prepare, but that hasn’t always helped the Black Knights, who are 5-22 ATS after a bye week.

The game will be played at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland.

The line

Navy opened as a 7-point favorite and remained there throughout the week. There were a few 7.5s popping up as of Friday but the vast majority of sportsbooks in Nevada and offshore were offering -7.

The total

The total opened at 56, but was up to 58 by Friday. Army is averaging 25.18 and allowing 28.36 points. Navy is averaging 29.91 and surrendering 29.64 points.

The last five meetings have stayed under the total, averaging 36.6 points, and Army has scored a total of two touchdowns in the last four games against Navy.

Michigan State Spartans at Gonzaga Bulldogs (-3.5, 139)

Even though the Spartans have won seven straight games and have covered the last three pointspreads they’ve seen, coach Tom Izzo isn’t about to let his club get complacent.

They spanked Central Connecticut State 89-69 on Wednesday that didn’t have a posted line, but Izzo was far from impressed.

"There's been a little too much credit given so we're back to dog eat dog," Izzo told Michigan State's official website. "We are just going to have to play a lot better than we played inside. Our outside defense has been pretty good, but (Wednesday) it wasn't. That's disappointing going into a big game. You kind of hope to go in there on a high."

They’ll need to be ready Saturday, because the Bulldogs will come out firing. They are coming off their first loss of the season, an 82-75 decision at Illinois as 3-point underdogs. Gonzaga shot 51 percent from the floor but coughed up 17 turnovers.

Spartans keep this one close.

Kentucky Wildcats at Indiana Hoosiers (5, 147)

The Kentucky Wildcats may be the No. 1 team in the nation according to the polls, but you won’t hear hoops bettors hanging that handle on them right now.

The Wildcats won their 39th consecutive home game last weekend, slipping by North Carolina 73-72 but failed to cover as 6.5-point favorites.

"We felt like this was a good test to see where we're at against one of the best teams in the country," senior Darius Miller told reporters. "We came out with a W. I think we're all pretty happy about it."

Well, at least somebody was pleased. It was the fourth time straight time they dropped the cash, putting their record against the spread at 3-4.

Meanwhile, this isn’t a Hoosiers team to mess around with, especially with freshman Cody Zeller getting it done inside. He’s posting 15.5 points and 7.5 boards per game.

We'd like to back the Hoosiers here, but this line looks a little short.

NHL Top 6: Best and worst puckline bets

The NHL has seen its share of surprises at both ends of the standings through the first quarter of the season.

Teams like Minnesota and Florida have exceeded preseason expectations while clubs like Washington and Tampa Bay have scuffled so far. These developments aren't simply limited to wins and losses. There has been no shortage of stunners in puckline stats, with most of the same teams involved.

Here's a look at the six teams who have given bettors the biggest and smallest bangs for their buck so far this season:

LEADING THE WAY

Minnesota Wild (19-7-3 overall, 20-9 ATS)

The Wild have been the sensation of the league, maintaining their traditional stinginess in the defensive end while adding just enough firepower to turn some of those narrow losses of years past into clutch victories. Ten different players have at least one game-winning goal, emphasizing the sneaky depth Minnesota possesses up front. In goal, the tandem of Niklas Backstrom and Josh Harding is the best in hockey.

Detroit Red Wings (17-9-1 overall, 18-9 ATS)

Every year, detractors point to the Red Wings' advanced age and predict the club's demise. And every year, Detroit proves them wrong. The club got off to a slow start but has been one of the premier teams in the league since, vaulting into the Western Conference elite thanks in part to an offensive resurgence from team leader Pavel Datsyuk. The defense, led by future Hall of Famer Nicklas Lidstrom, has helped goalie Jimmy Howard look like a world beater.

Florida Panthers (16-8-4 overall, 17-11 ATS)

Few could have expected the Panthers to jell so quickly after adding more than a half-dozen new faces in the offseason. Kris Versteeg (29 points) has been a revelation after bouncing around the past few seasons, while Tomas Fleischmann (29 points) is also looking like a free-agent steal. The top line of Versteeg, Fleischmann and Stephen Weiss has been unstoppable, while the goaltending – led by a resurrected Jose Theodore – has been a surprising strength.

BACK OF THE PACK

Los Angeles Kings (13-11-4 overall, 8-20 ATS)

It's shaping up to be another frustrating season in Tinseltown. The Kings thought they had addressed their goal-scoring issues by acquiring Mike Richards in the offseason, and while he's doing his part, too many of his teammates simply are not. Drew Doughty has been mediocre after missing training camp while offseason acquisition Dustin Penner has scored just twice. Only three players have more than five goals – and in the wild, wild West, that simply won't do.

Washington Capitals (14-12-1 overall, 8-19 ATS)

Switching coaches hasn't had the desired effect in Washington, with the Capitals still struggling to find the offensive explosiveness it has displayed in recent years. Alex Ovechkin continues to suffer through a staggering and inexplicable decline, on pace for the worst season of his career. New head coach Dale Hunter may simply need more time to implement his style of play, but with Washington ninth in the East he may not have that luxury.

Tampa Bay Lightning (12-14-2 overall, 11-17 ATS)

General manager Steve Yzerman faces his first bit of in-season uncertainty as he tries to figure out what to do about a team that can't keep the puck out of the net. Netminder Dwayne Roloson was sensational a season ago but has predictably regressed, leaving him in a time-share situation with journeyman Mathieu Garon. Steven Stamkos is still scoring at a feverish pace, but he isn't getting much help from his teammates.

Hockey Night In Canada: NHL betting preview

Vancouver Canucks at Ottawa Senators (130, 5.5)

Though they must be surprised to look up and see Minnesota ahead of them in first place in the Northwest Division, the second-place Canucks are well aware just how long a season truly is. And to be playing their best hockey of the year as this date with Ottawa rolls around has to be pleasing to Vancouver management, especially after the way the season began.

Comeback crew

This will be the second of a five-game road trip for Vancouver, and the momentum snowball that’s been building over the last two weeks gained a few more layers on the trip’s opener. In Montreal Thursday, the Canucks rallied from a three-goal deficit to outlast the Canadiens, 4-3, in a shootout.

It was Vancouver’s eighth win in the last nine games and third in a row. And as a result, goaltender Roberto Luongo, as he tries to regain the form that helped lead the Canucks to the Stanley Cup Finals last season, takes a 10-6-1 record, with an .897 save percentage and a 2.82 GAA, into this contest with the Senators.

Dynamic duo

The Senators have cooled from that surprising start but, as the holidays roll around, the fact that Ottawa is still in the playoff picture in a crowded Eastern Conference should be a feather in its cap.

As play began Friday night, the Senators were in the No. 8 and final playoff position in the conference and it’s been on the strength of a couple of former first-round picks truly having breakout seasons.

Milan Michalek and Nick Foligno have combined for 28 goals and headline a cast of five players with at least 19 points for Ottawa. Even Sergei Gonchar, the forgotten high-flying defenseman, has chipped in with 17 assists.

Rough couple of characters

Perhaps one of the keys to Ottawa’s success lies within the enforcer department. Though they have to pay for it with penalty minutes aplenty, it is abundantly clear that the Senators don’t take garbage from anyone, and when it’s time to drop the gloves, they have a pair of willing combatants.

Zenon Konopka, a forceful fighter who played for the Islanders last season, has joined forces with Chris Neil to make the Senators perhaps the toughest team in the league. Konopka has 99 penalty minutes, Neil has 58 and they probably fuel each other to keep up their statistics.

History

Vancouver has won the last four games in this series, and eight of the last nine, including a 2-1 overtime decision at home on Nov. 20. Think over in this one. The Canucks have passed the total in four straight games and the Senators have done the same in three straight games.

Edmonton Oilers at Calgary Flames (-145, 5.5)

A rivalry will be quickly renewed, as the two Western Conference teams that battled it out on Hockey Night in Canada’s nightcap last week, give it another go this week - only in a different location.

The fire still burns

Over the long haul of the season, Calgary will certainly look back with regret on its slow start. But give the Flames credit for battling back in December, and slowly creeping into contention.

Gone, for now, are all of the rumors of trades and wholesale transactions that usually accompany bad teams. That’s because their 3-2 victory over Colorado Thursday night was both uplifting and significant on a few fronts. First and foremost, it brought Calgary back to the break-even mark at 13-13-2. And it also gave the Flames a 5-1-1 record in the last seven games.

One Hall of an absence

Edmonton forward Taylor Hall has been making progress in his recovery from a left shoulder injury, but he’s not back on the ice yet - and it shows in the standings. The Oilers, entering Friday’s home game against Colorado, had lost two in a row and five of six.

Hall was placed on injured reserve on Nov. 27, and has not yet been cleared for contact. He has seven goals and 18 points this season and is still fifth on the team in scoring despite the absence.

Still searching for offense

Lost in Calgary’s sudden charge has been the fact that the Flames still aren’t scoring a whole lot. That shouldn’t matter when you’re winning, but if you’re an over/under player, you should still consider the fact that the Flames play it tight to the vest.

While there are five players that are getting close, it’s important to note that no Flame has reached double digits in goals yet. Jarome Iginla, Rene Bourque, Olli Jokinen, Curtis Glencross, and Lee Stempniak all have at least eight, but if you’re looking for that go-to goal scorer at crunch time, the Flames don’t seem to have it at this point in the year, despite some impressive resumes.

History

Calgary has won the last seven installments of this great rivalry, including a surprising 5-3 victory in Edmonton last Saturday. The Flames have scored seven goals in their two meetings with the Oilers this season. Prior to Friday night, Edmonton had posted three straight overs, and were underless in the previous four games.

Tampa Bay Lightning at Philadelphia Flyers (-200, 5.5)

The last time these two teams got together, there was a whole lot of standing around going on.

The Flyers refused to play into Tampa Bay’s 1-3-1 system, opting instead to sit back in their own zone with the puck as the seconds ticked by. Watching the ice melt was just about as exciting, though the Lightning did come away with a 2-1 win in overtime.

Both clubs will be without some serious star power for this matchup. Tampa Bay lost Martin St. Louis indefinitely this week when he was hit in the face with a puck at practice while Philadelphia continues to manage without defenseman Chris Pronger and forward Brayden Schenn.

The Lightning will come into this one fired up after a near brawl broke out at MSG on Thursday, but don’t expect them to stray from the system that frustrated Philadelphia so much last month.

Pick: Under

Montreal Canadiens at New Jersey Devils (-125. 5.5)

The Devils are a tough team to figure out.

They came out flat again and were down 2-0 after the first period Thursday against Ottawa before rallying to a 5-4 overtime win. Coach Pete DeBoer likely had a little to do with the comeback.

“For all the right reasons we got a little critique after the first period,” goalie Johan Hedberg told reporters after he replaced Martin Brodeur after the first. “I think the right things were said in the dressing room. We knew what we needed to do to come back.”

The Devils have found themselves in that situation far too often this year. They fall asleep at the wheel and then battle like hell just to get back in the game, but that won’t cut it against the Canadiens. Montreal just picked up Tomas Kaberle off the scrap heap and this is likely his last shot.

The new guy in the room will give the Habs a boost here and they need a win here in a bad way. They’ve picked up points in four straight but have just one win over that stretch.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: 13 other things David Stern should veto

David Stern vetoed the Chris Paul trade this week, which is fine with us; he has to do what he thinks is best for the NBA. While he’s at it, we’ve got a list of 13 other things we’d like Mr Stern to veto/change………

13) Staying with the NBA for a minute, we’d like NBA teams to be allowed to play any type of defense they want to; if the stars only want to play in big markets, then coaches in small markets should be able to defend them any way they see fit. How else can there be any type of competitive balance?

12) Possession of firearms. Too many people own guns. Too many innocent people are getting hurt/killed. Its ridiculous. Only policemen and soldiers should have firearms.

11) Mr Stern should veto Kansas hiring Charlie Weis as football coach; if the Jayhawks want to hire an overweight coach, they should go re-hire Mark Mangino, who they stupidly canned two years ago.

10) Mr Stern should veto the entire Kardashian family. All of them. Except Lamar Odom.

9) Major league managers/coaches shouldn’t wear uniforms and they shouldn’t be allowed between the white lines once the game starts. Want faster baseball games? No visits to the mound, no arguing with umpires. There you have it, faster games. Simple, no?

8) Thursday night NFL games should get vetoed; football wasn't meant to be played on three days' rest. Hurts the quality of the product.

7) Ban fighting in the NHL, just like it is in every other team sport. Hockey is a great game, you don’t need fighting.

6) Mr Stern should get the price of gasoline lowered; greedy bastards are still charging $3.57 a gallon at the hideous Mobil Mart near my house.

5) Baseball needs a salary floor and a salary cap; think everyone would make more money if they had one. Who wants to root for a team that doesn’t even try? $80M floor, $120M cap and everyone has a chance to win. If you can’t make afford an $80M payroll, sell the team to someone who can. And yes, Lewis Wolff, I'm looking at you........

4) Mr Stern definitely needs to veto the BCS. A college football playoff would be huge, but it would change who was making the big money. The current system is making certain somebodies a ton of cash, and those people are protecting their interests fiercely. Time for that to change.

3) Coaches shouldn’t be able to switch jobs while under contract; if they get fired before their contract is up, they get paid, so they should stay where they are until their contracts expire. It only seems fair.

2) As a society, we need to be less politically correct; there is so little tolerance for freedom of speech. No one says what they think because God forbid, someone might get offended. Too goddamn bad. People risk their lives daily to protect our freedoms; the least we can do is use them.

1) One more NBA thing for Mr Stern to fix; sell the Hornets to someone who will move the team to Seattle; that city supported the Supersonics and they deserve to have an NBA team, with or without a new arena.
