Friday’s betting tips: VCU Rams own Richmond ATS

    Who’s hot

NHL: The over is 6-1 in Colorado’s last seven road games.

NHL: Washington is 20-8 in its last 28 home games.

NCAAB: Florida is 8-3 against the spread in its last 11 non-conference games.

NCAAB: VCU has covered the number in four straight.

    Who’s not

NHL: Edmonton is 4-17 in its last 21 as a favorite.

NHL: Buffalo is 2-6 in its last eight.

NCAAB: Iowa is 1-4 against the spread in its last five road games.

NCAAB: Richmond is 3-8 against the spread in its last 11 meetings with VCU.

    Key stat

49.4 – The Wyoming Cowboys are off to a quick start this season, jumping out to an 8-1 straight up record while covering the number in five of the six games that have seen a pointspread. Most of their success can be attributed to defense. They sit third in the nation allowing just 49.4 points per game heading into Friday’s date with Colorado. Wyoming is listed as a 5.5-point road underdog.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Paul Stastny, Colorado Avalanche – Stastny is considered doubtful for Friday’s game against Edmonton with an upper-body injury. The 25-year-old was injured in Sunday’s game against Detroit and hasn’t played since. He sits fourth in team scoring with 15 points.

    Game of the day

Richmond Spiders at VCU Rams (-3.5, 128)

    Notable quotable

"I will say that Albert Pujols' age to me is not a concern. He's an honorable man and a very respectful man. I'm not a scientist, but I can tell you he hits like he's 27. ... I will say this, that in regard to the evolution of a hitter, as hitters begin to age, into their 30s and to whatever point you can project, there is a certain quality and a trait in a hitter, the patience they exhibit." - Los Angeles Angels GM Jerry Dipoto on the 10-year, $254 million contract he gave Albert Pujols.

    Notes and tips

Buffalo Sabres right wing Ville Leino was suspended one game for leveling Philadelphia Flyers rookie Matt Read with an elbow to the head on Wednesday. Leino will miss Friday’s home game against Florida. Read was not injured during the third-period altercation and no penalty was called on the play. Signed to a massive six-year, $27 million contract in the offseason, Leino has collected just three goals, seven assists and four penalty minutes with Buffalo. The Sabres are -150 favorites against the Panthers.

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson returned to practice Thursday while continuing his recovery from a high ankle sprain. Peterson has already missed two games with the injury, suffered in a Nov. 20 game against the Oakland Raiders. he All-Pro runner participated in individual drills Thursday. Coach Leslie Frazier said earlier in the week that Peterson was close to coming back. Toby Gerhart will likely see the bulk of the carries again if Peterson can't play Sunday against the Detroit Lions. The 26-year-old Peterson has 187 carries for 875 yards and 11 touchdowns in 10 games.

The Los Angeles Lakers appeared to have reached an agreement to acquire point guard Chris Paul from the New Orleans Hornets in exchange for Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom, according to a Yahoo! Sports report. But the trade has been put on hold, possibly for good, according to multiple reports. A group of NBA owners protested the league-owned Hornets trading Paul to the Lakers, forcing commissioner David Stern to get involved. News that the trade had been called off came just hours after the reported three-team deal, which also included the Houston Rockets, was agreed upon. Paul simply wrote "Wow" on Twitter late Thursday when told of the deal falling apart. ESPN.com had reporting that the Hornets will receive Luis Scola, Kevin Martin and Goran Dragic from Houston for Gasol, who would be re-routed to the Rockets.

      Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- For some reason, Kansas Jayhawks hired Charlie Weis as their new football coach. Bobby Bowden (see quote box) and I aren't sure why.

-- 9-year old kid in Gastonia, NC got suspended for calling his teacher "cute". Cooler heads prevailed, the suspension got overturned. No one has indicated if the teacher is actually cute or not, but the principal that suspended the kid wound up quitting.

-- Harvard lost 67-53 at UConn, in their first game as a ranked team.

-- Ben Roethlisberger led by example last night; chances are he got his ankle shot up with painkillers at halftime, then went out and did just enough to help his team win. Gutty performance.

-- Shane Battier-to-Miami is a wise move; you need some guys who can play without the ball in their hands.

-- NBA pulled the plug on the Chris Paul deal; seeing as the NBA owns the Hornets, am guessing some other teams weren't too pleased league was helping out one of the premier franchises.

      **************

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind..........

      13) Excuse me for being a little ornery; two weeks before Christmas and A’s have already been eliminated from contending for 2012 AL pennant, as the suddenly-feisty Angels shelled out $322M or so to sign CJ Wilson and Albert Pujols. My A’s couldn’t afford to re-sign David DeJesus or Mark Ellis, both of whom are marginal big leaguers. Outstanding.

      12) What does it say about Wilson’s relationship with the Rangers that he skipped out on them to sign with their biggest rival, after playing in consecutive World Series with Texas? Or is it like the late George Young used to say, “If you think its not about the money, remember. Its always about the money.”

      11) Angels, by way, are still on hook for $63M to highly unproductive Vernon Wells over the next three years.

      10) As an A’s fan, it irritates me that Giants are blocking A’s attempts to get a new stadium. Oakland wants to do what the Marlins are doing now; get a new ballpark, create new revenue streams that will allow them to compete. Without a new ballpark, they're screwed.

The Giants, who already got their terrific new stadium, are blocking the A’s from moving farther away from San Francisco than they are now. It doesn’t seem right. Time for former used car salesman Bud Selig to flex some muscles and get his old college buddy Lew Wolff a stadium in San Jose. Either that, or fold the franchise.

      9) You heard me right; if the A’s aren’t allowed to build a new stadium, MLB needs to put them out of their misery. Right now, they’re nothing more than a glorified Texas League franchise, projecting a team three years down the road, when/if the new stadium gets built.

      8) Just for math purposes, Pujols’ agent, at the standard 3% rate, makes a cool $7,350,000 over the life of the deal. Wilson’s agent makes himself $2,325,000. Good work if you can get it.

      7) Switching gears, if you want to watch a really bad, tasteless TV show, watch Baseball Wives on VH1; publicity-starved females, all of whom used to be or still are married to big league ballplayers, stab each other in the back for an hour at a time. I couldn't get thru two commercial breaks, but Mark Grace’s ex-wife is really cute. I’m looking forward to hearing his comments on the show on Diamondback broadcasts in the spring.

      6) ESPN did two Monday night games from Jacksonville this year; apparently to cut costs, they used the same blimp shots from the first broadcast during Monday night’s game. Somehow, they got called on it; not sure how anyone would realize that. No big deal, but I guess it’s a little embarrassing. Not like the city changed in a month.

      5) Why did the White Sox trade their closer for a minor league catcher? They already have Tyler Flowers a pretty good catching prospect; why get rid of the young closer Santos so quickly?

      4) Marlins shelled out a fortune in salaries this week but one thing they didn’t give out is a no-trade clause; they don’t play that game.

      3) Wyoming Cowboys are off to a fast start due to their vastly-improved 3-point shooting under new coach Larry Shyatt; last two years, Cowboys shot 26.0% and 28.0% behind the arc, one of the worst marks in America. So far this season, Wyoming is making 33.8% from the arc, not great, but good enough so teams actually have to guard them out there. It makes a big difference.

      2) If you don’t think there are huge egos at work here, consider this, ARod’s ridiculous contract is worth a total of $252M; Pujols’ contract is worth $254M, and if you think that’s a coincidence, you haven’t been paying attention.

      1) Pujols will get paid $136,612 a day during the season for next decade; Wilson will make $85,164.84 a day for the next five seasons. I make a little over $50,000 a year, not that I feel inadequate or anything.

      Nope, not me.

College funds: Friday's best NCAAB bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Richmond Spiders vs. VCU Rams (-3.5, 128)

With a light schedule on tap for Friday, the Spiders and Rams will welcome in ESPN2 to take in the annual Black and Blue Classic at the Siegel Center. And it should be a doozy.

Richmond’s lone loss on its schedule was a 70-61 decision to Illinois and the Spiders have rebounded to win and cover the number in their last three. Meanwhile, VCU has won four of its last five and has covered the number in four straight.

The Rams may really get on a roll once point guard Darius Theus gets more comfortable as the starting point guard.

"The more games we play, the more comfortable I get," Theus told reporters. "It hasn't been a big adjustment. Any player who comes in and has to play behind somebody .?.?. this is what I've been waiting for. This is my chance now."

This should be a scrappy affair and with these two clubs allowing about 60 points per game, we’ll look to the under.

            Pick: Under

Rider Broncs at Florida Gators (-26, 155.5)

So what did Billy Donovan want from Patric Young after the sophomore put up a career-high 25 points to go along with 10 rebounds in a 78-72 overtime win over Arizona? Well, more.

With guards Kenny Boynton and Erving Walker chucking up bricks all night, Donovan wanted his club to keep feeding the hot hand.

“This is a game where Patric Young should have taken 40 shots in the game. Erving Walker and Kenny Boynton need to do a better job of reading what is going on inside the game,” Donovan told reporters. “This could be a great film because we did win the game, but they can learn a lot from this game, like what teams may potentially do in the future against us and how to respond and react.”

You know Boynton and Walker will bounce back. They hit just two of 15 trey attempts between them against Arizona and will be ready to put it on Rider here.

            Pick: Gators

Ice picks: Friday's best NHL bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Carolina Hurricanes at Winnipeg Jets (-145, 5.5)

The MTS Centre may never have been louder than it was on Tuesday night when the hometown Jets dropped the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins.

The Bruins hadn’t lost in regulation in 15 games before Ondrej Pavelec stole the game with 39 saves. Winnipeg has now won three straight games and improved to 8-4 at home.

"There's a lot of trust being built within the room, within the players, and I think we believe we can get this thing done," head coach Claude Noel said. "We're playing smart, we're following the details, and we're getting the job done."

They don’t have much choice when they’re playing at home. Jets fans are an entirely different breed and won’t let these guys off the hook like Atlanta did – which is good because this team still needs a kick in the pants on a regular basis.

We don’t normally dig into chalk like this, but it’s a good matchup. You may want to look to the puckline.

              Pick: Jets

Toronto Maple Leafs at Washington Capitals (N/A)

Alex Ovechkin’s reaction after he scored a highlight-reel goal Wednesday said it all. Washington captain looked skyward after netting his first goal in six games, putting Washington up 3-2 in the third period against the Senators.

The Caps went on to win 5-3, which was just their second victory in seven games.

"(Ovechkin is) our star player and we need him to play like that," forward Troy Brouwer told reporters. "He set the tone early, had a couple of good shifts and a couple of good opportunities. You could see one coming - he had that desire to score. Hopefully this will give him a little bit of confidence so he can get back to the old Alex Ovechkin that we know."

Ovechkin did catch some heat over he allegedly speared Chris Neal, but there hasn’t been any talk of possible suspension as of Thursday evening.

The Capitals showed a lot of jump in the third period and that should carry over to this one.

              Pick: Over

                    Armadillo's Write-Up

                    Friday, December 9

Home side won seven of last eight Iowa-Iowa State games, with State winning last two, 81-71/75-72; Hawkeyes lost last four visits to Ames by 8-12-9-10 points. Iowa lost four of last six games; they're 0-3 vs top 100 teams, losing by 23-16-20 points, losing 80-60 at Northern Iowa in its only true road game. Cyclones are 6-3, scoring 84+ points in five of six wins. Iowa is bad defensive team unless they force turnovers.

Colorado won four of last five games, beating Georgia by 2, Fresno State by 7 at home; Buffs are 1-2 vs teams ranked in top 120. Wyoming won its last six games; they're 7-1, but lost at Green Bay by 8 in only road game this season. Best team Cowboys beat is #177 No Colorado; they're holding teams to 23.3% shooting behind arc. Mountain West road dogs of 7 or less points are 5-2 vs spread; Pac-12 home favorites are 4-9.

Vastly improved Oregon State is 6-1, forcing turnovers on 29.3% of all possessions (#3 in country); Beavers are 3-0 at home, winning by 24-10-25 points. Idaho just lost at home by hoop to Washington State; they're 2-4 vs D-I teams, 1-2 on road, losing by 8 at Long Beach, 5 at Montana, with win at Cal-Davis. Pac-12 double digit home favorites are 11-14 vs spread; WAC double digit road underdogs are 3-5 against the spread.

Florida is coming off OT win over Arizona Wednesday; they're leading country in offensive efficiency, but shooting just 59% at line. Only good thing I can find to say about 1-8 Rider is their 8-point loss at Pitt back in November- they lost their first two league games last weekend by 16-20 points. Gators are off eight days after this game. MAAC road underdogs of 19+ points are 1-4; SEC home favorites of 15+ points are 4-9-1.

UMass split last six games after 4-0 start; they're 5-0 vs teams ranked below #200, with all five wins by 14+ points. Minutemen are forcing turnovers on 26% of possessions. Siena plays six guys; they were lucky to beat crosstown rival Albany last game. Saints are 1-3 on road, losing by 28-2-7 points. Atlantic 14 double digit home favorites are 6-3 vs spread; MAAC road underdogs of 15 or less points are 10-5 vs spread.

Fairfield is 5-4, 1-4 vs teams ranked in top 120, with only win against #112 Arizona State, only team they've beaten thats ranked above #197. Stags turn ball over 23.2% of time, not good. Old Dominion is allowing 58.8 ppg in last six games; they're making just 27.5% behind arc, 63.7% from foul line. MAAC favorites of 5 or less points are 2-5 vs spread; CAA underdogs of 5 or less points are 2-13 vs spread.

Richmond beat VCU by 12 LY, snapping 6-game series skid; Spiders are 0-4 in last four visits here, losing by 5-8-20-8 points. Richmond is 6-2 this season, but lost both games vs top 100 teams, losing at Davidson by 13, by 9 on neutral floor to Illinois. VCU is 5-3, 0-3 vs top 100 teams, losing by 15-13-8 points. Atlantic 14 road underdogs of 5 or less points are 10-4 vs spread; CAA home favorites are 4-7 against the spread.

Strange that Army-Navy game is in Washington for first time; Middies won last nine series games, covering seven of them, with last four wins by combined score of 120-23. Favorites covered eight of last ten series games. 4-7 Navy is 0-5 in games decided by less than 7 points; lack of a quality kicker cost them dearly earlier in season. Army is 2-8 vs D-I teams, with six losses by 10+ points; they scored 14-12-14 points in lat three games, losses by 10-15-28 points. No bowl game for either team, so this game takes on even more importance than it usually does.

Army vs. Navy: What bettors need to know
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Army Black Knights vs. Navy Midshipmen (-7, 58)

The 112th Army-Navy is the only FBS game on the board Saturday and will generate plenty of betting action.

The Midshipmen (4-7, 6-5 ATS) have won nine straight against the Black Knights (3-8, 5-6 ATS) by an average of 22.5 points per game. The nine-game run is the longest streak in series history. Navy has covered the spread in seven of the last nine meetings.

Navy has looked like the superior team again this year and has played better competition. The Midshipmen’s opponents were a combined 58-46. Army’s opponents went 48-55.

Per usual, both squads feature potent ground games. Army leads the nation in rushing at 350.9 yards and needs 140 yards against Navy to become the first team at West Point to rush for 4,000 yards in a season. The Blacks Knights have put up prolific numbers, despite being without starting quarterback Trent Steelman for much of the second half of the season.

Steelman is expected to start against Navy, but isn’t thought to be 100 percent. Freshman Angel Santiago and senior Max Jenkins will backup Steelman.

Both teams have had ample time to prepare, but that hasn’t always helped the Black Knights, who are 5-22 ATS after a bye week.

The game will be played at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland.

                            The line

Navy opened as a 7-point favorite and remained there throughout the week. There were a few 7.5s popping up as of Friday but the vast majority of sportsbooks in Nevada and offshore were offering -7.

                            The total

The total opened at 56, but was up to 58 by Friday. Army is averaging 25.18 and allowing 28.36 points. Navy is averaging 29.91 and surrendering 29.64 points.

The last five meetings have stayed under the total, averaging 36.6 points, and Army has scored a total of two touchdowns in the last four games against Navy.

                            Weather

Temperatures are expected to be in the low 40s by kickoff with a 13 mph NW wind.

                            Trends

Army is 9-20-1 ATS in last 30 as an underdog of 3.5-10.
Navy is 10-4 AT in its last 14 games in December.
Under is 10-2 in last 12 games following a bye week.
