Thursday's betting tips: Penguins shelf Sidney Crosby

    Who’s hot

NFL: Pittsburgh has covered in seven of its last nine home games.

NHL: Minnesota has won five straight.

NHL: Pittsburgh has won seven of its last eight games in Philadelphia.

NCAAB: The under is 21-7-1 in UConn’s last 29 home games.

    Who’s not

NFL: Cleveland is 3-11-2 in its last 16 games overall.

NHL: Phoenix is 4-11 in its last 15 games in Detroit.

NHL: The New York Islanders are 3-7 in their last 10 home games.

NCAAB: West Virginia is 1-5 against the spread in its last six neutral site games.

    Key stat

5.90 – Cleveland Browns quarterback Colt McCoy sits 30th in the NFL, averaging just 5.90 yards per completion this season. McCoy faces the Pittsburgh Steelers, who own the NFL’s No. 1 total defense, as 14-point home underdogs. McCoy suffered a mild knee sprain last week but is considered probable for Thursday’s game. As of Wednesday evening, more than 65 percent of *********** Consensus bettors were backing the Steelers as 14-point favorites.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Peyton Hillis, Cleveland Browns – Hillis has been limited in the short week of practice due to a hip injury and is officially listed as questionable for Thursday’s game. Hillis suffered the injury in last week’s loss to Baltimore, which was his second game back in action after missing five straight with a hamstring issue. If he can’t go, Montario Hardesty could be in line to start. Hardesty has not played since suffering a calf injury against San Francisco on Oct. 30. He has rushed for 244 yards on 75 carries this season.

    Game of the day

Cleveland Browns at Pittsburgh Steelers (-14, 38)

    Notable quotable

"The grand prize is we get to go down and play in Storrs. They're one of the best programs in all of basketball. They could beat us by probably 150 points last year, but we're very excited to play them." - Havard coach Tommy Amaker about being ranked among the top 25 for the first time in school history ahead of Thursday matchup at UConn. Harvard is set as a 6.5-point underdog.

    Notes and tips

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby will sit out the next two games for precautionary measures. Penguins general manager Ray Shero confirmed the decision which will keep Crosby out of Thursday's game against the Keystone State rival Philadelphia Flyers and Saturday's tilt versus the New York Islanders. Crosby collided with teammate Chris Kunitz during the third period of Monday's game against the Boston Bruins. Both players remained on the ice for a few minutes - but returned to action a couple minutes later. "Sidney took a hard hit during our game against Boston Monday night and wasn't feeling 100 percent," Shero said. "He saw Dr. Micky Collins of UMPC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) today and took an ImPACT test, which showed no problems. However, we all think it's best that he sits out the next two games as a precaution." Crosby, who is currently in a seven-game goalless drought, has collected 12 points in eight contests since returning from a concussion.

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid says Michael Vick will retain his starting role this Sunday against the Miami Dolphins. Vick had proclaimed himself fit to play earlier in the week, and Reid echoed those sentiments Wednesday after Vick reported no problems during Monday's workout. He's expected to practice throughout the week. Vick has missed the last three weeks recovering from two broken ribs. Vince Young will return to the backup role Sunday. Vick has thrown for 2,193 yards with 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in nine games this season.

      Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Best game lat night was out west, with Iona winning 80-78 in OT at Denver. Couple of solid mid-major teams there.

-- Alabama lost at Dayton, Georgia lost to Georgia Tech. Bad night for the SEC, even with Florida beating Arizona in OT.

-- Utah Utes picked a bad year to join the Pac-12; they're really terrible this season, losing by 31 at home to Cal-State Fullerton Wednesday.

-- Illinois/Purdue/Nebraska of Big Dozen all survived close calls at home against St Bonaventure/Western Carolina/Florida Gulf Coast.

-- Rutgers lost to Princeton, Penn State lost to Lafayette; these teams are going to squashed in conference, if they're losing these games.

-- Loyola Md won at George Washington; Greyhounds are 7-1, could challenge Iona/Fairfield for MAAC supremacy.

      ********************

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

      13) So Hanley Ramirez went to the Marlins and asked for more money to move to third base. Shocking. Now they're going to trade him. Good luck getting value there.

      12) How does a parent teach a kid geography these days? San Diego State and Boise State are in the Big East? With Houston and SMU? Yikes.

      11) Why is 6-7 UCLA playing in a bowl game but Western Kentucky is staying home? Sun Belt got three bowl bids; Hilltoppers finished second in the league but didn't get an invite. Nice bowl system they have.

      10) Sacramento Kings have a season ticket plan where the 34 games cost $340, a mere $10 a game. Lot of empty seats at Arco Arena LY.

      9) Braves' manager Fredi Gonzalez got ripped LY for using a reliever on back-to-back days 144 times, most in the big leagues. But for the last five years of his great career, future Hall of Famer Bobby Cox averaged using a reliever on back-to-back days 140.6 times. Not much difference.

      8) Belmont Bruins are moving from Atlantic Sun to Ohio Valley next year will be interesting to see if they challenge Murray State for supremacy in the OVC. Racers are unbeaten this season, but right now, A-Sun is listed as the #19 conference, OVC #27 (out of 32). Step down for Belmont.

      7) 70 of the 120 I-A college football teams go to bowl games; USC can't go, so they're #71. By my count, right now 9 of the 70 bowl teams will have a different coach next year. Another 11 will switch leagues or already have switched leagues. Kind of tough to handicap games when teams like Southern Miss and Arkansas State lose the coach before their bowl.

      6) Tulsa won its last three bowl games by an average score of 57-18, and two of three teams they beat were ranked in top 25 when they beat them. Hurricane won 62-35 LY, as a 10-point underdog.

      5) Mets' new leadoff hitter is Andres Torres, who will be 34 next month and has had exactly one good major league season, back in 2010. Wouldn't want to be selling Mets' season tickets this winter.

      4) Over last five years, SEC teams are 30-16 in bowl games, 18-11 vs the spread when favored, 9-8 when an underdog, but they're 0-5 as underdogs the last two seasons.

      3) North Carolina's Harrison Barnes and Creighton's Greg McDermott were high school teammates in Ames, Iowa, which is where Iowa State is located. McDermott's father was the ISU coach back then, but left when he didn't land Barnes for the Cyclones, and he signed on his son to play at Creighton, his new employer. Its worked out well for everyone but the home folks for Iowa State, who have a boatload of transfers this year.

      2) You know you're having a good day when you turn down a job offer worth $20M a season over ten years.

      1) Anyone else get a feeling the 2012 Marlins are a trainwreck waiting to happen? Lot of volatile personalities down there in Miami.

              Thursday, December 8

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Thursday’s best NHL bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Wild at Los Angeles Kings (N/A)

If you haven’t already, it’s time to start taking the Minnesota Wild seriously.

With Tuesday’s win over the San Jose Sharks, they pulled into first place overall with 39 points in 28 games played. And it’s not just the point total, but how they’re piling them up.

Josh Harding was forced to leave Tuesday’s win just over a minute into the game with a neck injury, which could have spelled disaster with Niklas Backstrom already on the shelf with a groin injury. Instead, rookie Matt Hackett stepped in and stopped all 34 shots he saw in a 2-1 win.

"I think it's a good sign that there's a lot of character in the room," Wild forward Kyle Brodziak told reporters about Minnesota’s comeback wins. "It's happened so many times this year, and it seems like every single time everybody's talking each other through it, saying to each other to stick with it.”

Backstrom and Harding are both considered probable for Thursday night and the Kings continue to struggle to find the back of the net.

              Pick: Wild

Colorado Avalanche at Calgary Flames (-130, 5.5)

Early prediction: there’s going to be a lot of talk about defensive assignments in both dressing rooms before this one.

The Avalanche were just destroyed 6-0 by Vancouver, while Calgary slipped past the lowly Hurricanes 7-6 on Tuesday. Calgary had a 4-2 lead heading into the third period before the floodgates opened, while Colorado was down 2-0 after the second before the Canucks poured it on.

"We let down at the end, we got sloppy, and it cost us some goals,” Calgary associate coach Craig Hartsburg told reporters. “But we're at the point here where we have to build on the positives. We'll look back at that part of the game and say, 'This can't happen,' but there's a lot of really good things in that hockey game we'll have to build on."

Colorado has won just one of the last 11 meetings between the two teams and Calgary will be fired up after its latest barnburner.

              Pick: Flames

Boston College is 2-6, with only wins over New Hampshire/Riverside by total of 7 points; five of their six losses are by 11+ points, with loss at Holy Cross (86-64) only true road game. Eagles won last three games vs Providence by 5-5-2 points; they've won three of last four visits here. Friars are 7-2, with best wins over #104 Fairfield, #134 South Carolina; both their losses are vs top 100 teams, Iona/Northern Iowa.

8-0 Harvard held two top 100 teams they beat to 45 ppg, winning by 5 over Florida State, 10 over Central Florida; UConn is 7-1, beating Florida State by 2 in OT, Arkansas by 13 in last two games. These two teams were in Bahamas tourney but didn't meet. Crimson won its three away games by 9-10-7 points, but against teams ranked #211/188/156. UConn is #3 offensive rebounding team in country. Interesting game.

Detroit's win over St John's Monday makes them 2-6 vs D-I opponents, but four of the six losses were by 6 or less points; Titans are 1-4 in last five games vs Wetern Michigan; five of last six series games were decided by 6 or less points. Broncos are overscheduled and 0-6 vs D-I teams, as they've played #3 schedule in America- they lost by 6-5 points in two games that were against teams not ranked in the top 100.

Eastern Michigan is 3-4, losing last game to Colgate; best team they've beaten was #182 IUPUI; Eagles are making just 25.2% of shots on arc, turning ball over 23.4% of time. Drake won 58-54 at Eastern LY; they're 4-3 vs D-I teams, but three teams that beat them are in top 100- they're 3-0 at home, with a win over Iowa State. Eastern's 66-49 loss at #317 Texas Southern is red flag- their only road win (1-3) was at IUPUI.

Kansas State is 5-0, allowing 59 ppg; only top 10- team they beat was #49 Va Tech (69-61); Wildcat opponents are making 36.2% of 2-point shots, 25.8% of 3-pointers while turning ball over 23.9% of time. West Virginia only has three players back from LY; they scored 60-62 in two losses, by 10-13 points to Kent/Miss State- they scored 77+ points in their four wins- they're only making 28.1% of their 3-pointers.

Harvard Crimson at UConn Huskies (-6.5, 129.5)

No. 24 Harvard figured it would get a crack at No. 9 Connecticut in the championship game of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament over Thanksgiving weekend. Unfortunately, the Huskies failed to hold up their end of the bargain and lost to Central Florida, leaving the Crimson to roll to the title.

Connecticut has added one significant piece since that loss, getting freshman point guard Ryan Boatright eligible following a six-game suspension. The Aurora, Ill., native has been a key part of the Huskies’ last two victories, hitting three free throws to force overtime in the third-place game at Atlantis, and leading the team with 23 points in a victory over Arkansas on Saturday.

Boatright’s emergence has taken the pressure off Jeremy Lamb and Shabazz Napier, who were doing the bulk of the scoring in the team’s first six games. Boatright was 8 of 12 from the field and added six assists and five rebounds against Arkansas.

                Pick: UConn -6.5

West Virginia Mountaineers at Kansas State Wildcats (-2, 134.5)

Kansas State can look back to Bob Huggins’ single season as head coach to the year that turned the school into a contender in the Big 12, with then-assistant Frank Martin a big part of that transformation.

Huggins won the most games by a first-year coach (23) in Wildcats history but Martin took them to their highest win total (29) in 2010 and ended a 12-year NCAA Tournament drought with a berth in 2008.

Martin has been around long enough that all of the players on the roster are his recruits, including senior forward Jamar Samuels, who scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half Sunday in a 69-61 victory at Virginia Tech.

                Pick: Kansas State -2
