Key stat

28.2 – Weber State Wildcats guard Damian Lillard leads the nation in scoring, dropping 28.2 points per game. He blew up on Saturday with 41 points in a 91-89 double-overtime loss to St. Mary’s. However, the Wildcats dropped another game against the number (this time as 15-point favorites) and now sit at 1-3-1 against the spread this season. They visit BYU Wednesday.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Ray Lewis, Baltimore Ravens - Lewis has been sidelined for three games due to turf toe and is expected to sit out Sunday's matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. Oddsmakers have the Ravens as 16.5-point favorites. The Ravens have won all three games without Lewis (2-0-1 ATS) and remain tied with Pittsburgh atop the AFC North. The former NFL Defensive Player of the Year has 68 tackles and two forced fumbles this season.

Notable quotable

But we know they will tale us seriously now, given the points we have taken in the group." – Basel bench boss Marco Streller ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League match with Manchester United, who need at least a point to advance to the final 16. Oddsmakers have United set as a -180 favorite with the draw at +255 after the two clubs played to a 3-3 draw at Old Trafford in September.

Notes and tips

There are a handful of tasty Champions League matchups set to go down Wednesday. One of the more intriguing matches on the slate has Real Madrid set as just a +135 favorite against Ajax. Madrid has nothing to play for after already advancing to the knockout stage and is expected to start its reserves. Ajax has a number of issues to deal with, but only needs a draw to advance without any outside help, which is exactly what manager Frank de Boer is looking for. He told reporters he expects at least a point Wednesday and oddsmakers have the draw at +210.

The Florida Gators expect to welcome 6-foot-10 junior forward Erik Murphy back to the lineup Wednesday against Arizona after he missed the last three games with a knee injury. Murphy is averaging 10 points and four rebounds per game early this season and the Gators were just outrebounded 40-33 in a loss to Syracuse on Friday. Meanwhile, the Wildcats announced freshman guard Josiah Turner will be suspended for Wednesday's game after he violated team policy. Turner is averaging 7.1 points and about 19 minutes of action per game.

The Carolina Panthers have placed starting defensive tackles Sione Fua and Terrell McClain on season-ending injured reserve. The duo had started every game since the season opener after being selected in the third round of the draft. Fua has a right hamstring strain and McClain suffered a sprained left knee. The Panthers signed defensive tackle Ogemdi Nwagbuo and added defensive tackle Jason Shirley from the team's practice squad to fill the vacated roster spots. Carolina has lost 14 players this year to season-ending injuries and is set as a 3-point underdog at home to Atlanta.

-- Southern Miss coach Larry Fedora is leaving Hattiesburg to become the new football coach at North Carolina.

-- Clemson just signed offensive coordinator Chad Morris to a 6-year contract worth $1.3M a year. He's an assistant coach. Wow.

-- Texans signed Jeff Garcia to be their #3 QB behind TJ Yates and Jake Delhomme. Lot of experience on that Houston bench.

-- Hanley Ramirez told the Marlins he wants to stay at SS. Uh-oh.

-- CBS/NBC are arm wrestling over who gets to broadcast the Patriots' game at Denver next week. Decision is coming Wednesday.

13) So ESPN basically traded Bobby Valentine to the Red Sox for Terry Francona? I’m thinking the TV network got the better of that trade.

12) Seeing as I watch 14 hours of college football every Saturday for three months a year, and then most every bowl game, I think I’m qualified to have a vote for the Heisman Trophy, seeing as there are like 900 voters anyway. I didn’t attend a college that has bigtime football, so I would be fair minded and objective. Anyone know how I could make this happen? I mean, seriously, there are some nitwits who have votes. I’d like one, too.

11) Why are the 49ers really good? They’ve started 26 drives this season in enemy territory; their opponents have started six in 49er territory. They haven’t made many mistakes, and that wins games.

10) In four of Denver’s 12 games this season, the first Bronco TD was scored by the defense or special teams.

9) Nick Saban voted Stanford ahead of Oklahoma State in the coaches’ poll; does he really think the Cardinal is better than OSU, was he just protecting his own team’s butt in the vote, or does he not respect the Cowboys because their defense isn’t as good as the other national title contenders? Stanford-OSU will be a very interesting game.

8) Lions have an assistant coach named Brandon Fisher, who played college football at Montana; he is Jeff Fisher’s son. Jim Schwartz coached with the elder Fisher with the Titans.

7) Another reason I should vote for all things college football; six nitwits had Boise State ranked lower than 10th. Anyone who doesn’t have them as a top 10 team is either ill-informed, corrupt, or both.

6) In their last eight games, Rams have been outscored 108-31 in second half; first halves haven’t been all that much better.

5) TV station A&E should just change its name to Storage Wars Network (SWN); seems like they have Storage Wars marathons on at least twice a week. A&E has to be surprised how popular that show is.

4) Hugh Freeze is new Ole Miss football coach; he was Michael Oher’s high school coach, if you saw the movie The Blind Side. In jumping from Arkansas State to the SEC, Freeze adds a zero to the end of his salary, as in, he just got a 1,000% raise in pay.

3) Biggest bowl spread is the 15 points Oklahoma is favored to beat Iowa by. Its very, very hard for me to lay double digits in a bowl, just because when a team is favored by that many points, the chance of the kids being overconfident is very high. I’ll have to research that before bowls start.

2) Highest totals in a bowl right now: Washington-Baylor (78), OSU-Stanford (75), Wisconsin-Oregon (72).

Lowest totals: Alabama-LSU (39.5), Ohio State-Florida (44), Iowa State-Rutgers (44.5).

Philadelphia Flyers at Buffalo Sabres (-110, 5.5)

Everything was supposed to get back to normal when Ryan Miller settled in between the pipes for the first time in weeks on Saturday. Miller had been sidelined with a concussion after being steamrolled by Boston forward Milan Lucic, something the Sabres vowed wouldn’t happen again.

Then Nashville pest forward Jordin Tootoo drove the net and smoked Miller again. This time, Miller jumped on top of Tootoo immediately, but nothing much came of the ensuing fracas. Tootoo was tossed and has since been slapped with a two-game suspension.

Not that it makes much difference to the Sabres. They’re getting pushed around all over the place this year and Paul Gaustad shouldn’t be the guy that everybody turns to on the bench.

"All it does is prove the facts are right when I said it was open season. … It appears it is open season," coach Lindy Ruff told reporters about the NHL’s inability to protect goaltenders.

Now they have to deal with a feisty Flyers club, the same team that chased Miller with three goals on 11 shots back on Nov. 2. If Miller gets the call here, he’ll be sharp. He’s had just about enough of this nonsense.

Washington Capitals at Ottawa Senators (-110, 5.5)

Each coach handles his superstars differently. Some like to throw them all together, loading up on one line, while others prefer to spread the talent out.

Well, with the Caps managing just one win over their last six, Dale Hunter may be ready to throw all of his eggs in one basket. Alex Ovechkin, Alex Semin and Nicklas Backstrom practiced together on the same line Tuesday. Hunter was noncommittal about whether the line would stay together for Wednesday’s game, but it’s worth a shot at this point.

“I think that we’ve been losing, so we’ve got to do something to mix it up a little bit,” Backstrom told reporters. “We’ve been playing with each other before, and when we do the right things, we’re good together.”

Not to take anything away from the Sens, who have had a great start and play hard every night, but they are going to have a tough time keeping it going.
