Tuesday’s betting tips: Marquette starting PG back from suspension

    Who’s hot

NHL: Minnesota has won four straight and nine of its last 11.

NHL: The over is 7-1 in Anaheim’s last eight overall.

NCAAB: Syracuse has covered the number in 10 of its last 14 overall.

NCAAB: Marquette is 5-2 against the spread this season.

    Who’s not

NHL: Carolina is 8-21 in its last 29.

NHL: Columbus is 13-39 in its 52 games overall.

NCAAB: North Carolina is 1-5 against the spread in games following a win.

NCAAB: Pittsburgh is 0-4 against the spread in its last four home games.

    Key stat

16.33 – The Detroit Red Wings lead the NHL’s money standings having earned 16.33 units for their supporters heading into Tuesday’s road date with St. Louis, more than five units ahead of the second-place Minnesota Wild.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Vikings - The Minnesota Vikings may Peterson in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions. Peterson has missed the past two games with a high-ankle sprain but had a good workout at the end of last week and is said to be feeling much better. Frazier wouldn't confirm whether Peterson would attend the team's first practice of the week Wednesday. The 26-year-old has 187 carries for 875 yards and 11 touchdowns in 10 games this season. He also has 16 catches for 125 yards and a score.

    Game of the day

Missouri Tigers at Villanova Wildcats (6.5, 148.5)

    Notable quotable

"I usually don't look ahead but I thought Marshall might be better than anybody we've played, so I think that will be a difficult thing for our players now to turn around this thing by Tuesday and get ready." – Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim about Tuesday’s matchup with Marshall after downing Florida 72-68 Friday night. The Orange are pegged as 14.5-point favorites.

    Notes and tips

Marquette starting point guard Junior Cadougan is expected back in the lineup Tuesday against Washington after serving a one-game suspension for violating team rules. Cadougan sat out 61-54 victory over Wisconsin and will be a big boost to the lineup. He’s averaging 7.7 points and 6.3 assists per game for the Golden Eagles, who are averaging 84.1 points per game. Marquette is set as a 6-point favorite.

The Boston Bruins are expected to start backup goaltender Tuukka Rask Tuesday at Winnipeg. The Bruins are in the middle of a stretch of five games in eight days and are coming off an impressive 3-1 win over Pittsburgh that saw starter Tim Thomas stand on his head with 45 saves. Rask is working on a 2.25 goals against average and a .921 save percentage this season. Boston is set as a -150 road favorite.

Utah has indefinitely suspended starting point guard Josh Watkins for conduct detrimental to the team. First-year coach Larry Krystkowiak said Watkins would not be able to take part in team activities until he reaches certain goals. Watkins has scored in double digits in 13 straight games, including 11 points in an 82-52 loss to Fresno State on Saturday. Utah, set to play in the inaugural Pac-12 season, is 1-6 and off to its worst start in school history.

      Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Eight NFL games this year where the losing side had the biggest advantage in average starting field position:

+15 Eagles vs Arizona, Week 10—Philly needs to hire Steve Spagnuolo as DC as soon as the Rams fire him.

+14 Cowboys @ Arizona, Week 13—Whats with these Cardinals?

+11 Broncos @ Tennessee, Week 3—Denver lost games like this in the pre-Tebow era.

+11 Raiders vs Kansas City Week 7—Misleading because Chiefs ran two INTs back for scores, which don’t enter into this stat.

+10 Patriots @ Buffalo, Week 3—New England led 21-3 at one point; Brady threw pick-6 which doesn’t get factored in here.

+10 Eagles vs 49ers Week 4—Philly led 23-3 in third quarter; Brown fumbled on 1-yard line while trying to lateral. Been that kind of year.

+9 Dolphins @ Cleveland Week 3—Browns scored winning TD in last 1:30. Miami could easily be 7-5 right now.

+9 Buccaneers vs Carolina Week 13—Interesting choice between Newton/Dalton as Rookie of Year. I might be only person who liked the Bucs’ orange jerseys.

      ****************

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Our bottom 8, top 5 in NFL.........

      32) Colts—Ironic that Colts will finish 0-16 the season they host the Super Bowl.

      31) Rams—They’re 10-34 the last three years, 15-61 since start of ’07 season. But I’m not bitter or anything. Time to clean house, again.

      30) Vikings—Before hiring a head coach, how about giving him a quiz to see if he understands the basics of clock management, stuff you don’t need to be a football coach to know, but STUFF YOU HAVE TO KNOW.

      29) Browns—Let me see, the old Browns moved to Baltimore, became the Ravens and got really good; the old Browns’ coach before they moved was Belichick, whose done pretty well in Foxboro. Lets just move on.

      28) Jaguars—New owner is the man who got rich after he invented the seamless bumper for cars. Interested to see who he hires as his new coach.

      8) Broncos—Won six of last seven games; someone remind me why the Panthers let John Fox go.

      7) Texans—TJ Yates is better than Leinart, so Houston actually gained on that exchange. Curious to see how much they expand his role each week.

      6) Steelers—Big Ben had a spiffy fedora on in his post-game interview Sunday; how would history be different had the Giants not drafted Eli Manning and simply taken Big Ben?

      5) 49ers—Miami Marlins gave Jose Reyes $106M for six years; they better hire a track coach to keep his hamstrings in one piece.

      4) Ravens—Ex-Baltimore coach Brian Billick is very good on TV; explains the game in a non-technical way that’s easy to understand.

      3) Saints—Before this season is over, Sean Payton is going to whack someone with one of those crutches.

      2) Patriots—I think Belichick actually likes it when media nitwits keep saying the Patriots have the worst defense in the NFL (ranking is based on yards given up); that’s why he let Dan Orlovsky run amok in garbage time Sunday.

      1) Packers—Ted Thompson doesn’t get enough credit for dumping Favre at just the right time. Took a lot of onions, and turned out to be brilliant.

Instant replay: NCAAF and NFL betting recap

Each week, we’ll recap all the betting information you need to know from the college and pro football action that went down over the weekend.

        College football betting recap.

If you were looking for upsets during Championship Weekend, they were few and far between.

Favorites went 20-2 straight up over the last week, but the two outright upsets were biggies. Houston saw its BCS hopes go down the drain by getting hammered 49-28 by Southern Mississippi as a 12-point favorite.

Meanwhile, Virginia Tech was pegged as a 7-point visiting favorite in Clemson but the hometown Tigers ran away with a 38-10 blowout as Tajh Boyd threw for 240 yards and three touchdowns and Andre Ellington rushed for 125 yards and a major.

Despite the loss, Virginia Tech will face Michigan in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 3 in New Orleans. As everybody expected, LSU drilled Georgia in the SEC Championship to set up a date with Alabama in the BCS title game.

Over bettors had a good week with 14 of the 22 games playing over the total.

        NFL betting recap

The Green Bay Packers continued their run to perfection with a win over the New York Giants, but it was their stiffest test so far this year. Giants bettors cashed in on the 38-35 decision with New York set as a 7-point underdog.

Meanwhile, the Indianapolis Colts easily covered one of the biggest spreads we’ve seen in years but couldn’t pick up their first win of the season. New England escaped with a 31-24 victory after closing as a 20.5-point favorite.

Heading into Monday night’s Chargers-Jaguars matchup underdogs were 8-7 in Week 13 while under bettors had an 8-7 edge in the over/under tally.

College football odds: Top 6 non BCS bowl games to bet

The college football bowl schedule was released on Sunday night and pointspreads weren’t far behind, as the Wynn Casino released lines for nearly all 35 games on Monday afternoon.

While the BCS bowls will be getting the majority of the spotlight over the next several weeks, here are six “other” games that are worth your interest if you plan to place a few wagers during bowl season:

Utah vs. Georgia Tech -4, Hyundai Sun Bowl

Should Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson abandon his triple option offense? It’s a question that’s been asked before and will no doubt be raised again if the Yellow Jackets fall to the Utes as 4-point favorites.

Johnson has lost all three of his bowl games since taking over at Georgia Tech in 2008, and his Navy teams lost the two years before he arrived.

In the last three bowl games, the Yellow Jackets have scored 7, 14 and 3 points, an indication that opponents with adequate time to prepare have no trouble slowing down his unusual attack. Utes coach Kyle Whittingham, it should be noted, is 6-1 all-time in bowl games.

Kansas State vs. Arkansas -8, AT&T Cotton Bowl

This has to be the highest-profile matchup of any non-BCS bowl simply because both schools felt they were BCS-worthy. Arkansas finished No. 6 in the rankings and Kansas State was eighth, but fans seemed to be happy with the consolation prize, as both schools sold out their allotment of tickets within hours after the game was announced.

The Wildcats will be underdogs yet again against a team that is perceived to have far superior talent across the board. Kansas State won outright as underdogs six times in the regular season and was only favored in four games despite posting a 10-2 record.

Bill Snyder worked wonders this season and will likely garner Coach of the Year consideration, but this will be one of his toughest challenges yet. The Wildcats struggled to slow down the fast-paced offenses of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Baylor, and the Razorbacks have a plethora of playmakers as well.

UCLA vs. Illinois -1.5, Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl

Who isn’t interested in a matchup between a pair of coachless BCS schools with a combined losing record playing in a bowl whose sponsor is famous for macaroni and cheese?

UCLA (6-7) had a chance to land in the penthouse, the Rose Bowl, with a win over Oregon in the Pac-12 title game. Instead, the Bruins are in the outhouse, facing off against an Illinois team that has lost six straight after a 6-0 start.

Both schools are headed in the wrong direction and will be performing coaching searches, so there will be plenty of uncertainty from a preparation and focus standpoint. May the team with the biggest appetite win.

Iowa vs. Oklahoma -16.5, Insight Bowl

Iowa had a disappointing season, finishing in fourth place in the Big Ten Legends division standings with a 7-5 record. Nonetheless, don’t underestimate the Hawkeyes, who are typically one of the best bowl teams in the country under head coach Kirk Ferentz.

Don’t be fooled by the 16.5-point spread. This game has a chance to be much closer, as Oklahoma has struggled offensively since early November, when it lost star wide receiver Ryan Broyles to a season-ending injury. Consider this: Landry Jones hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass since Nov. 5, a span of three games.

Iowa has covered four straight bowl games under Ferentz, and has twice won outright as underdogs. Bob Stoops, meanwhile, is well-known for his bowl futility. He’s lost five of his last eight, and it’s hard to imagine the Sooners will be excited to play in a non-BCS bowl.

Ohio State vs. Florida -2, TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl

Will future Ohio State coach Urban Meyer dare show his face in Jacksonville for this matchup?

More importantly, do “Tax Slayers” have anything in common with gators?

The answer to both questions is probably a resounding “no,” but this has to be the most intriguing matchup of 6-6 teams we’ve seen in quite some time. The last time these two teams met was in the 2007 BCS National Championship Game, when Meyer’s Gators destroyed the Buckeyes 41-14 as touchdown underdogs.

Florida has fallen off offensively under Will Muschamp since Meyer left the program, and this year ranked 88th nationally in passing offense and 75th in rushing. It’s not like Ohio State was any better, though, finishing 107th in the country with only 320 total yards per game.

Penn State vs. Houston -6.5, TicketCity Bowl

Everyone loves a good, high-powered offense against dominant defense matchup, and that’s exactly what this is.

Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin threw eight touchdown passes the entire season. Houston quarterback Case Keenum tossed 45, including nine in one game against Rice.

At 10-2 ATS, the Cougars were the best team in the country for bettors until a 49-28 debacle against Southern Miss in the Conference USA Championship game. Houston didn’t beat a Top 25 opponent while starting the year 12-0 but will get one final chance to change that against Penn State, which is undoubtedly the best defense the Cougars will face.

Ice picks: Tuesday's best NHL bets
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Red Wings at St. Louis Blues (-115, 5.5)

It’s not uncommon to see a team get on a bit of a run following a coaching change. That’s exactly what happened to the Blues when Ken Hitchcock climbed behind the bench.

St. Louis went 8-1-2 in its first 11 games after giving Davis Payne the boot, but teams are starting to get a better feel for what the Blues are trying to do now.

"We're going to get a push," Hitchcock told reporters. "You can surprise a team, but we're now playing a second wave. When we start playing the Chicago's and Detroit's again, now we'll have a look. They'll be ready for us. They won't be surprised by our game."

St. Louis has been a lot better defensively since Hitchcock took over and should be in the mix at the end of the year as long as the offense holds up. The Wings finally gave starting goaltender Jimmy Howard a break after 17 consecutive starts on Sunday and Ty Conklin couldn’t get it done in a 4-2 loss to Colorado.

Howard should be back in goal for this one.

                          Pick: Red Wings

Colorado Avalanche at Vancouver Canucks (-205, 5.5)

Could the Vancouver Canucks really trade Roberto Luongo?

Of course, rumors of the club cutting ties with its high-priced netminder have surfaced from time to time over the past few years, but it’s worth considering with the way Cory Schneider is playing.

With bigwigs gathering in Pebble Beach, the Ottawa Sun is reporting that Vancouver has shopped the veteran netminder but that no team has been willing to take on his $5.3-million annual contract that runs until 2021-22. Plus, there’s that small issue of his no-trade clause making this speculation questionable at best.

However, all this talk isn’t good for a dressing room. Luongo is supposed to be the No. 1 guy and hasn’t played like it, but maybe this competition from Schneider will finally get Luongo going.

No word on who starts yet for Tuesday’s game though the over is likely the best bet here. Vancouver has scored at least four goals in four of its last five and seven of the last 11 meetings between the two clubs have played over as well.

                          Pick: Over
