Sunday’s betting tips: Pack could exploit GMen

    Who’s hot

NFL: The Dolphins are 5-0 ATS in their last five overall and the under is 6-0-1 in their last seven against the AFC.

NFL: The under is 7-0 in the Falcons’ last seven overall .

NFL: The Broncos are 4-0 ATS in their last four overall and 4-0 ATS in their last four road games.

NHL: The Red Wings are 7-0 in their last seven overall and 4-0 in their last four road games.

NCAAB: Stanford is 6-0 ATS in its last six overall and 4-0 ATS in its last four home games.

    Who’s not

NFL: The Rams are 2-10 ATS in their last 12 overall and 1-6 ATS in their last seven road games.

NFL: The Browns are 1-7-2 ATS in their last 10 home games.

NFL: The Giants are 1-5-1 ATS in their last seven overall and 0-3-1 ATS in their last four home games.

NHL: The Ducks are 1-6 in their last seven home games and 3-13 in their last 16 against the Western Conference.

NCAAB: Notre Dame is 0-6-1 ATS in its last seven overall and 1-5 ATS in its last six road games.

    Key stat

14.1 – Points per game by which 11-0 Green Bay is outscoring opponents as it looks to keep its winning streak going on Sunday against the Giants. Speaking of points, a ton could be scored in this one. Aaron Rodgers third in the league in passing yards with 3,475 and Eli Manning is fourth at 3,358. The Packers are 31st in pass defense (287.8 yards per game) and the Giants are 26th (251.2). New York is coming off a blowout loss at New Orleans in which it allowed 577 total yards of offense.

    Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

Plenty of starting quarterbacks have been confirmed out for this week (and beyond), but the statuses of two are up in the air. Sam Bradford (ankle) is a game-time decision for the Rams and Josh Freeman (shoulder) is the same for the Bucs. Both teams have activated quarterbacks off the practice squads as insurance policies. A.J. Feeley will get the nod at San Francisco if Bradford can’t go while Josh Johnson is ready to start if Freeman has to be on the sidelines at home against Carolina.

    Biggest games on the slate

Cincinnati Bengals at Pittsburgh Steelers (-7, 43)

Detroit Lions at New Orleans Saints (-9, 53.5)

Green Bay Packers at New York Giants (6.5, 53.5)

    Notable quotable

“I think our philosophy whenever you play any team, you don’t look at their record. We understand they’re a good team but whether you’re 11-0 or 3-8, it doesn’t matter to us…. We know we want to go out there and play well. We want to move the ball. When we get down there near the endzone, we have to make sure we’re getting touchdowns and not just settling for field goals.” – New York Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning when asked about facing the 11-0 Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

    Tips and notes

Tiger Woods has once again been up and down, this time at the Chevron World Golf Challenge. In between two mediocre rounds he turned in a 67 on Friday. But don’t be fooled by his 73 on Saturday; he continued to strike the ball well. “Even though I made three bogeys on par 5s, I had two three-putts, but I played well,” said Woods. “I hit a lot of good shots that ended up in bad spots because I had bad (wind) gusts.” He trails Zach Johnson by one shot but could easily be ahead by one. Johnson holed out from 163 yards for eagle on the 18th in round three.

Doug McDermott, the son of head coach Greg McDermott, is carrying the load so far for undefeated Creighton. He leads the team in both points per game (23.7) and rebounds per game (8.5) through six contests going into Sunday’s home date with Nebraska. The Bluejays have endured just one scare, which came on Wednesday in an 85-83 win at San Diego State. McDermott went for 25 points and 12 boards as Creighton erased a 17-point deficit.

The Vancouver Canucks are playing like they want to make a return trip to the Stanley Cup Finals. A big reason is because they are lighting the lamp with relative ease. Heading into Sunday’s home game against Calgary, the Canucks have won five of their last six and even in a Thursday loss to Nashville they scored five times. Vancouver has found the net 20 times in its last five outings. The team is up to fourth in the NHL in scoring at 3.12 goals per game.

      Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Six most popular picks and six least popular picks in Hilton handicapping contest, which has 517 contestants, all of whom who pick five NFL games a week against the spread. They put up $1,500 each, so these are serious handicappers........Eagles (23) and Seahawks (26) had the least support this week, but they both played on Thursday, so we omitted them from this week's table.

      6) Carolina Panthers 111
      5) San Diego Chargers 114
      4) Baltimore Ravens 116
      3) Houston Texans 120
      2) Atlanta Falcons 121
      1) Denver Broncos 133 25) Cleveland Browns 43
      26) Indianapolis Colts 39
      27) Jacksonville Jaguars 37
      28) St Louis Rams 36
      T29) Kansas City Chiefs 33
      T29) Tampa Bay Bucs 33

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college sports Saturday........

      13) Has a team ever scored 42 points in a game without picking up a first down in the first half? LSU gets more production out of defense/special teams than any football team since the 1985 Bears.

      12) North Carolina made 11 of 18 shots behind arc and still lost by one at Kentucky, in a game that seemed a lot more like March than December.

      11) When was the last time Oklahoma/Texas both lost conference games by 20+ points on the same day? Oklahoma State beat the Sooners for the first time in nine years. Baylor beat Longhorns for second straight year.

      10) Big East won 8-4 in the Big East-SEC Challenge, with Georgetown's win at Alabama Thursday the best game of the 12. Going to be a long year in Knoxville, if Pitt won there without injured point guard Woodall.

      9) Tough day for Conference USA and the Houston Cougars, as Southern Mississippi won the C-USA title game 49-28, costing the league its first BCS bowl slot and an estimated $11M payday. Rough way for the great career of Houston QB Case Keenum to come to an end.

      8) Purdue led by 19 at Xavier with under 11:00 left but lost by 3, a great win for the Musketeers, who will be challenged by Saint Louis for the top spot in the Atlantic 14. Purdue's oft-injured Robbie Hummel had trouble with his legs again, this time with severe cramping. Sad thing to see.

      7) Wild ending to Wisconsin's 42-39 win over Michigan State in the first Big Dozen title game; Spartans ran a Wisconsin punt back to the 5-yard line in the last 2:00, but Michigan State just barely ran into the punter, giving the Badgers a game-ending first down. If Michigan State gained 471 yards on Wisconsin, what is Oregon's offense going to do to them when they meet in the Rose Bowl?

      6) Speaking of the Badgers, rough week on the hardwood, as they lost by 7 at home to Marquette after losing by 3 in Chapel Hill during the week. Its still beneficial to play games like that, just better, obviously, to win them.

      5) Utah State (7-5) and Wyoming (8-4) are teams we haven't seen a lot of that will be going bowling. Good for them.

      4) Going to be a rough year for Georgia Tech, who lost 57-52 at Tulane, a game you cannot lose if you have any hope of being a good ACC team. Green Wave has gotten better, but not that much better.

      3) Wow. Didn't think Clemson had it in them to spank Virginia Tech again but they did 38-10, making the total score in their two meetings this year a convincing 61-13. Tigers will go to Orange Bowl for first time since 1981, when they beat Nebraska 22-15, and won the national championship.

      2) Detroit Titans are 1-6 vs D-I opponents after losing to Cleveland State at home Saturday; they're playing St John's Monday night and are naming their court after Dick Vitale, who coached the Titans for a few years, but is being honored for his great contributions to college basketball over the last 30 years. He really has been a great ambassador for the sport, and has also helped raise over $100M for cancer research through the V Foundation.

      1) So tomorrow night the bowl matchups will be set; 35 games stretching from December 17 until early January. Think about it; 70 of the 120 D-I teams go to a bowl and one of the best teams (USC) is on probation and can't go to one. Every coach who misses a bowl is on the hot seat for next season. A few coaches who make bowls have already been or will be fired.

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Sunday's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Red Wings at Colorado Avalanche (133, 5.5)

After a relatively slow start, the Red Wings are positively on fire.

They have won seven in a row and now have 33 points, tied for third most in the entire NHL along with fellow Central Division leader Chicago. In this current streak, Detroit has been taken to overtime just once and it has won its last three games by a combined score of 12-4.

"The confidence in the room right now is great," said goalie Jimmy Howard, who has made 17 straight starts. "And in hockey, confidence is everything."

The Wings and Avalanche have faced each other twice this season. Detroit dominated both contests; 3-0 on October 8 and 5-2 on November 8.

        Pick: Red Wings

Minnesota Wild at Anaheim Ducks (-116, 5.5)

By comparison, the Ducks are on a flat-out hot streak right now. Still, it does not get much worse than this team when it comes to the entire NHL.

Anaheim has earned points in two straight games, winning 4-1 over Montreal on Wednesday and losing in a shootout to Philadelphia on Friday. Wednesday’s victory ended a whopping seven-game losing streak.

The Ducks are tied for second to last in the league, two points ahead of Columbus. Enter new head coach Bruce Boudreau, former head man of the Washington Capitals.

"The energy and enthusiasm on the bench was really good,” Boudreau said after his first game, in which Anaheim blew a 3-0 lead over the Flyers. “Everybody left everything they had on the ice. It wasn't a question of people not giving it their all. They tried hard."

No, the problem isn’t effort. The problem is just that the Ducks aren’t any good.

        Pick: Wild

College funds: Sunday's best NCAAB bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Baylor Bears at Northwestern Wildcats (-3, 137.5)

Something will have to give when Baylor visits Northwestern on Sunday. Both teams are undefeated, with Baylor coming in at 6-0 and Northwestern registering at 7-0.

The jury is still out on the Bears because they have played a soft schedule. Their best win came on November 15 in the form of a 77-67 victory over San Diego State.

On paper, though, eighth-ranked Baylor looks great. Forward Quincy Acy is averaging 11.7 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. Fellow forward Quincy Miller is averaging 15.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per outing.

But the real story is the return of preseason Big 12 Player of the Year Perry Jones III. He missed the first five games due to suspension but took the court on Tuesday and promptly dropped 27 points on Prairie View in a 90-54 win.

Don’t expect Northwestern to be able to handle the 6’11’’ sophomore.

                Pick: Baylor

UNLV Rebels vs. Wichita State Shockers (-2, 140)

UNLV has surged into the Top 25 thanks to an 8-0 start to the season that includes an upset of then-No. 1 North Carolina. The Rebels, basically playing at home in Las Vegas, stunned the Tar Heels 90-80 on November 26.

They almost had a hangover on Wednesday at UC-Santa Barbara, but the Rebels survived 94-88 in overtime.

If Wichita State wants to be the team to halt the hot streak, it will have to contain UNLV forward Mike Moser. So far, nobody has been able to do it.

Moser leads the team in a host of categories, averaging 17.5 points, 13.2 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game to go along with a 50.5 field-goal percentage.

                Pick: UNLV

New Mexico State (-2.5) lost 80-72 to Southern Mississippi in Alaskan Shootout, in game where Aggies got USM in foul trouble, but hit on only 30-44 foul shots (Kabongo was 15-15; others were 15-29). USM's subs outscored State's 30-12. This is Eagles' first game since coming back to lower 48; Aggies lost at home to Arizona during week. C-USA favorites of 7 or less points are 2-12 against the spread.

Rider won its last eight games against Marist, with six of eight wins by 11+ points; Broncs won last four visits here by 14-13-22-16 points, but Rider is off to hideous 1-7 start this year, with only win by hoop over #311 Howard- they lost last three games by 12+ points. Red Foxes are 2-5, beating teams ranked #293/313, even though they're shooting 41.2% behind arc. Not lot to choose from here.

St Peter's won four of last five games against Manhattan, taking three in row by 28-17-9 points, but they've lost seven of last eight visits to this gym. Peacocks are 2-4, but three of their four losses are against teams in top 100; they're 0-3 on road, losing by 7-17-9 points. Jaspers are 4-4, but 3-0 against teams ranked below #200 (St Peter's is ranked #224); Manhattan is turning ball over 26% of time, which isn't good.

Iona won four of last five games against Niagara, winning last three trips here by 6-3-6 points; Gaels are 5-1, with only loss by point to Purdue. Iona scored 89+ points in five of its six games; three of its five wins are by 12+ points. Niagara is 3-4, with only one win against team ranked higher than #290. Eagles have made only 26.3% of 3-point shotts. Iona is ranked #18 in country in offensive efficiency.

Fairfield won its last seven games vs Canisius, winning last three visits here by 14-6-7 points; Stags are 4-4, but have played only two games at home. Canisius is 1-4, with only win by 4 over #318 Longwood. Dogs are 4-2 vs spread in first six MAAC conference games this year. Griffs' opponents are making a ridiculous 59.6% of 2-point shots, partly due to Canisius turning ball over 25.7% of time, leading to easy baskets.

First true road game for NC State team that lost by 7 to Vanderbilt, beat Texas by 3 on neutral floors (trailed Texas by 18). Irish lost both games on road, by 29 to Missouri, 20 at Gonzaga. Maryland is 3-3, with all three losses vs top 100 teams, by 20-26-9 points. ACC home underdogs are amazingly 0-6 vs spread this season; Big East road favorites of 5 or less points are 8-5 vs spread. Terps are shooting 59.4% from foul line.

Cal Bears suspended F Solomon for this game, not good sign; Bears are 6-1, but only loss was by 39 against Missouri in Kansas City, closest they've come to road game, until today. San Diego State won four of last five games, with all five games decided by 4 or less points. Road team is 9-1 vs spread in Mountain West games where spread is 5 or less points; Pac-12 road teams are 10-6 vs spread when number is 4 or less points.

Home side won last six Nebraska-Creighton games, last three of which were decided by 6 or less points. Huskers lost last four visits to Omaha, by 7-26-12-6 points. 6-0 Bluejays are shooting 45% outside arc, 57.8% inside it; they're #1 in offensive efficiency. First road game for 4-0 Kansas State squad that beat George Washington by 13 in only game vs top 100 opponent; Wildcats' foes are making just 35% of 2-point shots. 5-2 Virginia Tech is playing fifth straight game vs top 100 opponent, losing last game by 3 at Minnesota, against Gopher squad missing two of its best players. ACC single digit home favorites are 5-2 vs spread. Big X road underdogs are 2-8.
