Thursday’s betting tips: Bettors back Eagles despite ATS skid

    Who’s hot

NFL: Seattle is 6-2-1 against the number in its last nine overall.

NCAAF: The over is 8-2 in West Virginia’s last 10 overall.

NCAAB: Georgetown has covered the number in four straight.

NCAAB: The under is 8-2-1 in Kentucky’s last 11.

NHL: The New York Rangers are 10-2 in their last 12.

NHL: Phoenix is 13-1-1 in its last 15 against Winnipeg/Atlanta.

    Who’s not

NFL: Philadelphia is 3-10 against the spread in its last 13 as a favorite.

NCAAF: South Florida is riding a 1-7 slump against the spread.

NCAAB: St. John’s is 2-6 against the spread in its last eight.

NCAAB: Alabama is 1-5 against the spread in its last six vs. the Big East.

NHL: Washington is 2-7 in its last nine.

NHL: Columbus is 13-38 in its last 51 overall.

    Key stat

30 – The No. 1 Kentucky Wildcats are 6-0 straight up and have won their games by an average of 30 points so far this season. However, the Wildcats are just 3-2 against the spread. They host St. John’s as 23-point favorites Thursday evening.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Ahmad Bradshaw, New York Giants - Bradshaw expressed optimism that he will return to the lineup this weekend. Bradshaw, who has sat out four straight games with a broken bone in his foot, said there is a "big shot" he will play in Sunday's game against the undefeated Green Bay Packers. New York's running game has struggled in the absence of Bradshaw, who has 111 carries for 440 yards and five touchdowns this season. He rushed for 1,235 yards and eight touchdowns last season.

    Game of the day

Philadelphia Eagles at Seattle Seahawks (3, 43)

    Notable quotable

“You can take the rest of the games, and you can delete them. ... What this team is going to be remembered for is what happens (Thursday night). ... We’re playing a very good team. Their record doesn’t reflect what kind of a team they are, how well-coached they are, or what kind of players they have.” – West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen about Thursday’s matchup with South Florida. Oddsmakers have the Mountaineers set as 2-point favorites.

    Notes and tips

The Philadelphia Eagles have dropped seven of their last 10 against the spread, but bettors are jumping all over them in Thursday’s matchup against the Seahawks in Seattle. As of Wednesday evening, more than 66 percent of *********** Consensus bettors were backing Philadelphia, which was set as a 3-point favorite.

Pittsburgh Penguins defensemen Kris Letang and Zbynek Michalek will sit out Thursday's game against Washington. Both players are dealing with concussion-like symptoms. Letang suffered a broken nose Saturday on a hit by Montreal's Max Pacrioretty, who drew a three-game suspension for the blow. He practiced Monday and Tuesday but was experiencing trouble breathing. He also is suffering from a virus. Michalek also sat out Tuesday's game after taking a blow to the head in Saturday's game against Montreal. He has been bothered by headaches but was not diagnosed with a concussion.

The Kansas City Chiefs had incumbent starter Tyler Palko and newcomer Kyle Orton split quarterback reps at practice on Wednesday. Palko was expected to see 60 percent of the first-team reps, while Orton - who was claimed off waivers from the Denver Broncos last week - would be given 40 percent. Chiefs head coach Todd Haley hasn't named a starter for Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears. Palko took over the starting role after Matt Cassel went down with a season-ending injury. The 28-year-old has thrown for 444 yards with zero touchdowns and six interceptions in two games. Kansas City is currently pegged as a 7-point underdog.

      Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Big Dozen won the Big Dozen-ACC Challenge for the third year in a row. They're the best league in the country from top to bottom.

-- UNLV survived a trap game after beating North Carolina; Rebels won in double OT at a good UCSB team, 94-88.

-- Creighton was down 17 early, rallied to win 85-83 at San Diego State, which plays a close game just about every time out.

-- Rhode Island is 1-6 after losing at Brown. Yikes.

-- Denver won by 13 at Utah State; Aggies don't lose very many home games. Pioneers play like Princeton, have an experienced team.

-- Teams that won the two Disney tournaments and the Atlantis event last weekend all lost their next game this week. Go figure.

      ********************

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for in December......

      13) College football coaching changes have to be done fairly quickly, so that staffs are in place for recruiting season; put a staff in place too late, and that staff loses a full year in the recruiting cycle, so it’ll be very interesting to see how some of these schools fill their coaching vacancies.

      12) At some point, the baseball free agents will start signing with new teams, with Pujols-Fielder-Reyes the three most interesting cases.

      11) Who is running the Red Sox? The new kid GM didn’t seem to want Bobby Valentine as manager, but that’s who the Sox hired, so how much clout does the new GM really have? Are Red Sox owners placating their fanbase by hiring a manager the players don't want?

      10) Who will ESPN name to replace Valentine in the Sunday night TV booth? Bobby V and Orel Hershiser were a huge improvement as analysts over Joe Morgan, the previous Sunday night analyst. As long as they don’t bring Morgan back and don’t promote Rick Sutcliffe, it’ll be OK.

      9) Which NFL teams go in the tank, and which will show spunk and make the playoffs? Remember, the Packers were the #6 seed in the NFC LY and won the Super Bowl, so getting in tournament is still the main thing.

      8) Speaking of Green Bay, if they beat the Giants this week, will their being unbeaten become a burden?

      7) On the other end of the spectrum, can Dan Orlovsky lead the Colts to an 0-16 finish? He had a hand in Detroit’s 0-16 season in 2008, and we know there’s no substitute for experience.

      6) Am curious to follow Duke’s progress as they had towards ACC play, after they got spanked at Ohio State Tuesday; they’re not real strong in the backcourt, which will be their undoing in March.

      5) Hopefully Steve Lavin will regain his strength and be able to return to the St John’s bench soon. We enjoyed his seven years of work on ESPN and miss hearing him on TV. Get well soon.

      4) What will the quality of play be like when the NBA starts up again? What will the schedule look like? Will the league be smart enough to reduce the price of the DirecTV package?

      3) These birthdays seem to come more quickly every year, but I’ll be another year older sometime this month. Couldn’t work it out this year, but want to spend my birthday in 2012 in Las Vegas, simply because I’ve never been warm on my birthday, and that would be a good thing.

      2) I have 25 guys on my fantasy baseball team; three have already had surgery on injuries they suffered since the regular season ended. Guess I just don’t want to see any more of their names in the paper until I see a boxscore in March.

      1) I enjoy watching the bowl games and seeing different matchups, but it would be lot more fun if there were a playoff. You know, like there is in basketball, and in I-AA, D-II and D-III football. And in just about every other sport. Even squash.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Georgetown Hoyas at Alabama Crimson Tide (-8, 126.5)

No one can penalize Alabama for playing a weak schedule this year.

The No. 12-ranked and unbeaten Crimson Tide takes on another national opponent when it meets Georgetown as part of the Big East/SEC Challenge.

Georgetown, a traditional power, has won three straight games and is starting to gain support from the voters in the polls. The Hoyas have gotten some surprises production on offense in that span, averaging more than 86 points per game and playing over the total in the two lined games in that stretch.

Alabama is 2-1 over/under in its last three and boast a 10-1 over/under count in its last 11 meetings with Big East programs.

                Pick: Over 126.5

Mississippi Rebels at DePaul Blue Devils (0, 146)

Mississippi will go into an opponent's home arena for the first time this season, as the Rebels travel to Chicago for a matchup with DePaul in the Big East/SEC Challenge on Thursday at Allstate Arena.

The teams have split the two previous meetings. DePaul won at home in the 1983 NIT quarterfinals, and Ole Miss won in the 2007 San Juan Shootout in Puerto Rico.

After dropping its opening game in the Old Spice Classic to Minnesota, DePaul beat Texas Tech and Arizona State to finish the tournament 2-1. The Blue Demons are only three wins away from matching their seven wins from last year, coach Oliver Purnell's first at the helm.

                Pick: DePaul

                        Thursday, December 1

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Thursday’s best NHL bets
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Penguins at Washington Capitals (-110, 5.5)

If this date with the Penguins can’t wake up the Caps, their newly-named coach Dale Hunter might as well pack it in already.

Washington has just two wins in its last nine overall, but the Capitals did escape with a 3-2 win over Pittsburgh in the first meeting between the two teams.

That game also featured one of the ugliest knockouts you’ll ever see when Pittsburgh’s Arron Asham destroyed Jay Beagle in a third-period tussle. Beagle hasn’t played since and is still suffering from post-concussion symptoms.

Speaking of which, if you haven’t heard, this will be the first game in which the Capitals will face Sidney Crosby since David Steckel smoked him in last season’s Winter Classic. Steckel has since moved on to Toronto, but you can bet there will be some ill will between the two clubs.

The Penguins came up short in a 4-3 loss to the Rangers at MSG on Tuesday, but they played very well apart from a tough span in the second period. The boys will be out to win this one for The Kid.

                        Pick: Penguins

Ottawa Senators at Dallas Stars (-125, 5.5)

So far, both the Ottawa Senators and the Dallas Stars have exceeded expectations.

Ottawa has won five of its last seven and are holding down the No. 8 spot in the Eastern Conference. There are a lot of good things happening with the Sens – Paul MacLean has instilled some accountability from behind the bench and a number of the team’s young talents are immerging.

“I was a little bit happy and unhappy with my team tonight, but at the end of the night, we found a way to win the game,” MacLean told reporters after a 6-4 win over Winnipeg. “We showed some resilence and we worked real hard."

But you have to wonder how long they can keep this up when they’re allowing a league-worst 3.4 goals per game.

Dallas is going through a similar situation. No. 1 goaltender Kari Lehtonen carried this club early this season, but now he’s out with a groin injury, leaving Andrew Raycroft to hold the fort. He made 35 saves in a 3-1 win over Colorado Monday, but they need to tighten up in their own zone.

The Stars are giving up 32.8 shots per game, worst in the show.

                        Pick: Over
