Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Dewayne Dedmon, USC Trojans – Dedmon may miss up to six weeks with a stress fracture in his right foot after an MRI Monday revealed the injury to his fifth metatarsal. The 7-footer, who is wearing a walking boot and using crutches, has averaged 7.7 points and 6.0 rebounds through his team's first seven games. Dedmon earlier this season suffered a fracture in his right hand during practice and had to wear a splint until Nov. 9. The Trojans visit UC Riverside Wednesday.

The Eagles, who have dropped three of their last four straight up, travel to Seattle on the short week after a blowout loss to the Patriots. Oddsmakers have the Eagles set as 3-point favorites.

Notes and tips

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Sidney Rice is not expected to play in Thursday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Rice suffered a concussion in Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins that "basically rules him out," Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said. It is the second concussion suffered by Rice this season. The first, which occurred against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 10, did not force him to miss a game. Rice has appeared in eight games this season, hauling in 29 receptions for 449 yards and one touchdown.

Montreal Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov could make his long-awaited return to the lineup Wednesday. Markov, who practiced again Monday, hasn't appeared in a game in over a year. He has been sidelined since suffering an ACL and MCL tear against the Carolina Hurricanes on Nov. 13, 2010. The 32-year-old Russian, who signed a three-year, $17.25 million contract in June, has collected 81 goals and 285 assists in 623 career games.

North Carolina forward Harrison Barnes is expected to play in Wednesday’s game against Wisconsin after spraining his right ankle in Saturday’s upset loss to UNLV in the Las Vegas Invitational. He practiced fully despite leaving Las Vegas on crutches and should be in the starting lineup. Barnes leads the team averaging 17.3 points per game.

-- Jaguars were 9,800 fans short of a sellout for Monday night's game with San Diego; wonder if firing Jack Del Rio sold any tix Tuesday.

-- New owner of the Jags is Shahid Kahn, who made his fortune in the car parts business. He invented the seamless bumper. Kahn tried to buy the Rams in 2010, but Stan Kroenke had right of first refusal.

-- Colts will start Dan Orlovsky at QB this week; he last started for the 2008 Lions......you know, the 0-16 Lions. Whoops.

-- There is a Nathan Forrest HS in Jacksonville. Mr Forrest was the first Grand Wizard in the Ku Klux Klan. Terrific.

-- Redskins have turned the ball over 2+ times in each of their last eight games (minus-11). Hard to win that way.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

13) Went to the **** at 5:30am on Black Friday; wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Turns out its just like any other day at the ****, just with lot more high school girls. Felt bad for the employees in the food court, who had to work at that ungodly hour. Who is buying food at 5:30am (other than me)?

12) Former Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez spent this season as a studio analyst at CBS College Sports; he did an interview with his old crew last week, after he was named new coach at Arizona. Whole interview was laughter and busting on RichRod, which he took with great humor. Was fun to watch; great to see someone in his position who doesn’t take himself so seriously.

11) Saint Louis Billikens are in college hoops’ top 25 for first time since 1994; they responded to that by losing at LMU Tuesday night.

10) In case you missed it, competitive eater Kobiyashi consumed 7.5 pounds of turkey in ten minutes last week, which apparently is a world record, so congrats to him on that.

9) Few things are more annoying than getting e-mails from the NBA Store during the lockout.

8) It seems impossible, but DePaul is 2-52 in Big East play the last three years; saw them play this past weekend, and they’re going to make a jump this year. They’ve gotten a lot better.

7) Hulk Hogan had to fork over $10.4M plus a 40% stake in all of his businesses as part of his divorce settlement. On plus side, he doesn’t have to pay alimony. Thats a very expensive divorce.

6) Why don’t Idaho/Idaho State play basketball against each other? Seems like it would be natural/profitable for the teams to play. Same for Indiana/ Indiana State and Ohio/Ohio U?

5) If you think you’re having a bad day, check this out. Akron football coach Rob Iannello got fired via phone, as he was driving from Akron to New York to attend his mother’s funeral. Days don’t get much worse than that.

4) Seems to me that if Alabama were to beat LSU in the BCS bowl game, then the teams should split the national title, since they would’ve split two games against each other. Either that, or find a free stadium, free up three hours of TV time and play again the day before the Super Bowl. Who would be against that?

3) The more I think about it, the more I’m convinced Urban Meyer is this generation’s Larry Brown, a winning coach who never stays for long. In my mind, Florida is a better job than Ohio State, but I’m big on warm weather. Ohio State is headed for probation; we'll see how long Meyer lasts in Columbu.

2) NBA training camps open December 9; think moreso than usual, there’s going to be a lot of conditioning work going on. Read stuff during lockout about some players being 20-30 pounds overweight.

New Jersey Devils at Colorado Avalanche (-110, 5.5)

The New Jersey Devils are coming off a tough 3-2 loss against the Islanders to split their home-and-home series and even though that was four days ago, they’re still fuming about the way it went down.

After Ilya Kovalchuk was stripped of the puck by Michael Grabner for a shorthanded tally to give the Islanders a 3-2 lead in the third, Zach Parise appeared to tie the game with just two seconds left in regulation. However, the war room team in Toronto disallowed the goal.

"Based on my view of the replays, I wouldn't consider what I saw a distinct kicking motion, but I don't get to make those decisions,” New Jersey coach Pete DeBoer told reporters. “You live with it, and you move on."

The loss overshadows the fact that the Devils are playing much better lately. They have won four of their last six overall and were tied for ninth place in the Eastern Conference with the Caps heading into Tuesday night’s action.

Not bad considering Kovalchuk has just five goals. The Devils will come out flying after a few days off.

Montreal Canadiens at Anaheim Ducks (-110, 5.5)

How bad have things gotten in Anaheim? Bad enough that Bobby Ryan is practicing with the third line as the Ducks are reportedly shopping him to any team that will listen – which basically works out to the other 29 clubs in the league.

The New York Rangers are one club that have supposedly talked to Anaheim about the winger who scored 34 goals and 71 points last season, but has only seven goals and 11 points this year.

Whether anything comes of these trade rumors is a crapshoot, but something’s going to have to be done with the Ducks, who have dropped seven straight and were just a point out of last place heading into Tuesday’s action.

"There's no excuses. I just hate excuses,” veteran Teemu Selanne told reporters. “Everybody has a job to do, and it starts from there. Do your job. Not talking. It should be simple, but I guess it's not. We shouldn't even talk about anything. Enough talking."

Montreal has dropped three of four, but you can’t play Anaheim here until the Ducks switch something up.

North Carolina's star Barnes has gimpy ankle, is ?able here; Tar Heels lost at UNLV Saturday after Barnes got hurt in first half. With three days to recover from the excitement of knocking off the top team in the country, No. 20 UNLV is adjusting to life as a team with new expectations.

When Dave Rice took over for Lon Kruger in the off-season, the former Rebels player set about making sure a talented team would stick with him through the transition. Eleven players chose to stick with the program, including stars Chace Stanback and Oscar Bellfield. UNLV will be looking to avoid a letdown when it visits UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday.

The Gauchos are a tough group that has already crushed Santa Clara and took San Diego State into overtime Saturday. Orlando Johnson found his name on a few preseason All-American lists and should give the Rebels trouble.

Pittsburgh Panthers at Duquesne Dukes (+6, 149.5)

No. 17 Pittsburgh and Duquesne renew acquaintances for the 80th time in the annual City Game, which for the second straight year will be played at the Consol Energy Center.

The Panthers have won 29 of the last 32 series meetings, including the past 10 by an average of 15.7 points. And, although the last five meetings have finished under the total, the teams are a combined 7-2 over/under to start the year - both ranking among the Top 50 offensive programs in the country.

Pitt has bounced back from its home loss to Long Beach State with three consecutive victories, including an 81-71 triumph over Robert Morris its last time out. Duquesne dominated Louisiana-Lafayette in its last game, never trailing and leading by as many as 24 in an 84-65 victory.

THE STORY: Fifth-ranked North Carolina looks to rebound from a stunning early-season loss when it hosts No. 7 Wisconsin as part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge on Wednesday night. The Tar Heels were a nearly unanimous No. 1 before suffering a 90-80 defeat against UNLV in Las Vegas Saturday. The Badgers, meanwhile, are coming off a 73-56 rout of Brigham Young. UNC sophomore forward Harrison Barnes (ankle) is not at full strength but is still expected to play.

ABOUT WISCONSIN (6-0): The Badgers led all Division I teams in most major defensive categories, including points allowed (39.2) and opponent field-goal percentage (30.5), but that defense will be tested by a UNC team averaging 88 points per game. Wisconsin is also outrebounding its opponents by nearly 14 per game. Sophomore SG Ben Brust (12.8 ppg) leads a group of four players scoring in double figures, while junior C Jared Berggren adds 12.3 ppg. Senior PG Taylor averages 11.0 points and 5.8 assists.

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (5-1): The Tar Heels boast one of the country's most explosive starting lineups, but that arsenal could be significantly weakened if Barnes, the team's top scorer at 17.3 ppg, is not at 100 percent. His absence would put more pressure on the other two UNC forwards, junior John Henson (15.8 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 3.0 bpg) and senior Tyler Zeller (13.5 ppg, 7.2 rpg). Sophomore PG Kendall Marshall ranks second nationally with 10.8 assists per game.
