Tuesday's betting tips: 'Cuse pushes on after sex scandal

    Who’s hot

NHL: Pittsburgh is 10-4 in its last 14 games as an underdog.

NHL: The New York Rangers have won nine of their last 11.

NCAAB: Michigan has covered in nine of its last 10 road games.

NCAAB: Ohio State has covered in seven of its last nine non-conference games.

    Who’s not

NHL: Carolina is 3-10 in its last 13.

NHL: Nashville has dropped four straight games.

NCAAB: Maryland is 4-11 against the spread in its last 15 home games.

NCAAB: Arizona is 1-5 against the spread in its last six overall.

    Key stat

3.24, 3.27 - If you need statistical evidence to back up the coaching changes the Carolina Hurricanes and Washington Capitals made Monday, you needn’t look any further than average goals against. The Hurricanes allow 3.24 goals per game (28th in the league) while the Capitals allow 3.27 (29th). We took a deeper look at the coaching changes in today's Ice Picks.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Kevin Kolb, Arizona Cardinals - Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt expects quarterback Kevin Kolb to return for this Sunday's game against the visiting Dallas Cowboys. Kolb has missed the past four games with an injured foot. He practiced on a limited basis last week, but was ultimately not ready to return for Sunday's win over the St. Louis Rams. John Skelton has been the starter in Kolb's absence, going 3-1. Kolb has thrown for 1,706 yards with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions in seven games. Arizona opened around +4.5 at home to Dallas.

    Game of the day

Duke Blue Devils at Ohio State Buckeyes (-5.5, 144)

    Notable quotable

“The allegations that have come forth today are disturbing and deeply troubling. I am personally very shocked because I have never witnessed any of the activities that have been alleged. I believe the university took the appropriate step tonight. What is most important is that this matter be fully investigated and that anyone with information be supported to come forward so that the truth can be found. I deeply regret any statements I made that might have inhibited that from occurring or been insensitive to victims of abuse.” – Syracuse Orange coach Jim Boeheim in a statement about the dismissal of assistant coach Bernie Fine, who is accused of sexually assaulting at least two former ball boys. The Orange, who are 4-1 against the spread this season, are back in action Tuesday night when they host Eastern Michigan as huge 29-point favorites.

    Notes and tips

Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III said he will be under center for Saturday's regular-season finale against Texas. Griffin was knocked out of Saturday's game against Texas Tech with an apparent head injury, but said there was "no doubt" he'd be ready to play against the Longhorns. Griffin was hit hard at the end of a run in the first half. After going to the sideline for one play, he returned to score on a short run. After he was checked out at halftime, the decision was made to keep Griffin on the sideline for the rest of the game. "He had a little trouble remembering what was going on," Baylor coach Art Briles said. "We were going to be cautious because that's the right thing to do. Robert's a tough guy. He wanted to go. ... But he didn't need to go."

Montreal Canadiens left wing Max Pacioretty has been suspended for three games following his hit on Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang. The discipline was announced Monday after Pacioretty had a hearing with NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan. He is eligible to return Dec. 6 against Columbus. Pacioretty lowered the boom on Letang, who ended up with a broken nose, late in the third period of Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Penguins. "I feel terrible that he got hurt and I'm thankful that he came back," Pacioretty said of Letang following the game. Pacioretty knows a thing or two about injuries, having been sidelined with a severe concussion and cervical neck fracture after Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara sent him into a stanchion during a game on March 8.

      Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Saints gained 354 yards last night. In the first half.

-- Giants' backup QB David Carr has earned $36,796,765 in his career, which hasn't been very good.

-- Oakland Grizzlies beat Tennessee second year in a row, 89-81.

-- Seems awful young to do it, but Billy Donovan won his 400th game as a college coach Monday. I must be old; saw him play in high school.

-- Next year, six head football coaches in Pac-12 will be in their first or second year on the job.

-- I won't miss Urban Meyer as a TV announcer; he seems so serious, devoid of personality. Hard to believe he's a great recruiter, which may explain why he hasn't stayed at any of his jobs very long.

      ********************

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Our bottom 8, top 5 in NFL......

      32) Colts-- Why isn't Peyton Manning on IR? Are they trying to win?

      31) Rams-- Next season, the new coach won’t punt to Patrick Peterson. And don't tell me the Rams are talentless; they hammered the Saints, so there has to be some talent in that locker room.

      30) Vikings—Down 10 with 5:00 to go in Atlanta, Minnesota had 4th-and-goal from the Falcon 1-yard line.

YOU HAVE TO KICK THE FIELD GOAL THERE.

But no, Vikings went for the TD, didn’t make it and all hope was lost. Leslie Frazier is now on the suspects’ list as a game manager. At 2-9, he is a suspect in general as a head coach.

      29) Jaguars—Pretty good defense, very good RB, fairly bad record. They need a QB. Playing the rookie makes no sense; he’s simply not ready. By time this team re-locates to LA, he might be ready.

      28) Browns—Team needs a new nickname, a new identity; keep the same colors, but “Browns” are the family that founded/owns the Bengals, a division rival. Have a big contest, find a mascot people like and give your team a new identity.

      8) Bears—Why do some NFL teams not let injured players make road trips? Anytime the starting QB goes down, he should be on the sideline helping his backup. I’m not talking about the Bears here, because Cutler was in Oakland, but seems to me the injured QB can be a valuable resource.

      7) Texans—Schaub injury really hurts; the Leinart injury is no big deal, since he’s no good anyway. Thought the Yates kid threw the ball well; they went into a second half shell because they didn’t have a backup QB.

Which reminds me, NFL screwed up when they ditched the emergency 3rd-QB that every team got to have in case of injuries. Not having that extra QB available crushes the quality of the product if the starting QB gets hurt early in the game.

      6) Steelers—This story bears repeating. Big Ben didn’t start as a high school junior because the coach’s son was the QB, the same kid who wound up playing WR at D-III Denison, hardly a small college power. Wonder if Ben donates to the high school’s booster club now?

      5) Ravens—It would be great if everyone attacked their lives with the same enthusiasm Ray Lewis brings to football; he’s really going to miss playing. Think that’s a big problem for athletes; how to find something post-retirement that stimulates them as much as playing the game did.

      4) Saints—Think Sean Payton still remembers getting stripped of his play calling duties while the Giants’ OC? Something tells me he does.

      3) 49ers—NFL held back several rivalries (this one, Dallas-Giants. Browns-Ravens) to be played twice in last five weeks of season. Would rather see division rivalry games spread out little more, but they’re after big TV ratings, and apparently this is formula that gets the best ratings.

      2) Patriots—Since the end of baseball season, Red Sox have lost their manager, GM, closer, team doctor, NESN’s sideline reporter and their DH, probably. They can’t decide between Bobby Valentine and Gene Lamont as the new manager; since those men seem to be polar opposites personality-wise, we can assume there is a power struggle going on within the front office. Hopefully someone is writing a book about all this.

      1) Packers—Boring team. All they do is score lot of points and win games. It does bother me that all these celebration penalties are called league-wide but the Packers still get to do the Lambeau Leap. It’s a small thing, but whats up with that?

Instant replay: NCAAF and NFL betting recap

Each week, we’ll recap all the betting information you need to know from the college and pro football action that went down over the weekend.

        NCAAF betting recap

Barring some sort of huge upset, we’re going to have a rematch between LSU and Alabama in the BCS championship game – like it or not.

LSU plays Georgia this Saturday and will punch its ticket for the big game with a win, while Alabama’s regular season is done after it demolished 42-14 in the Iron Bowl. Sounds like it’s a done deal.

Meanwhile, favorites had a nice week in college pigskin, going 28-23-3 against the spread with visiting favorites going 11-6-1 against the number.

Andrew Luck led Stanford to a 28-14 win over Notre Dame as a 7-point favorite in what will likely be his last home game as a Cardinal and Michigan earned its first win over Ohio State in eight years, but couldn’t cover as an 8.5-point favorite.

        NFL betting recap

Following Thanksgiving Day’s action, Sunday’s games always seem to lack a little luster. But at least Tim Tebow came to play. Again.

Tebow led the Broncos to a huge 16-13 overtime win over the listless San Diego Chargers. Nick Novak missed on a 53-yard field goal attempt, which opened the door for another Tebow drive that set up Matt Prater’s winning kick. The Broncos are now just a game behind Oakland for the division lead and have covered the number in four straight games.

On the other end of the spectrum, Indianapolis fell to 0-11 straight up and 2-9 against the spread with a 27-19 loss to Carolina.

Underdogs were 6-5-1 against the number ahead of Monday night’s matchup between the Giants and Saints with visiting underdogs going 5-2-1 against the spread. Three underdogs won outright while total plays finished split at six overs and six unders.

College football odds: Week 14 opening line report

In a strange twist of fate, Georgia’s season, pre-bowl of course, will come to an end right where it began some three months before. But the mood around the team could not be more different.

The Bulldogs, in what seems like an eternity ago, dropped a disheartening 35-21 decision to Boise State in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome on Sept. 3. It was a night to forget, as a team from a non-BCS conference traveled into their neck of the woods, into SEC country, and had its way.

Georgia coach Mark Richt was immediately placed in the line of fire. His job was in jeopardy, as well. And his program was in a state of flux. Indeed, it was chaos in Athens, Ga.

And then, to complicate matters, the Bulldogs lost in Week 2, in their conference opener to South Carolina, 45-42. What could happen next, they thought?

Well, sometimes things right themselves in college football, and Richt will attest to that. Twelve weeks later, no one’s talking about his job security, and the Bulldogs appear in great shape, as champions of the SEC East. On Saturday, after having won 10 consecutive games (8-2 ATS), they will attempt to derail LSU’s dream season in the conference title game.

“To win 10 in a row is nice. When we were 0-2, a lot of people, within our building, thought we could snap out of it,” Richt said. “But you can't win 10 in row, without winning one in a row. So, that kind of became our war cry.”

So far, so good. But with the Tigers on tap, and all that is at stake, Georgia is going to need more than just a motto.

“They need to win this game, LSU, obviously,” Pete Korner, of Esportclub, LLC, in Las Vegas told ***********. “Georgia will be ready, but it means so much to LSU.”

Korner and his line consultant group sent out Tigers -10 to his clients. The Wynn Las Vegas, the first sportsbook to post weekly college football odds, went a little higher, installing LSU as 11-point chalk.

“Like I said, Georgia can play, and will be ready,” Korner said. “But it is all important for LSU now. And it just bodes well for them to win big.”

And with that, let’s take a look at some of next week’s other marquee games:

          Conference Championship Games:

MAC: Ohio (+3.5) vs. Northern Illinois (Detroit, Mich.)

This league often gets a bad name, especially around bowl season, when it’s tough for it to snag wins and, perhaps more important, some respect. But the MAC produced five teams with at least seven wins this season, and the Bobcats and Huskies are the best of the bunch.

“Two good teams with great years,” Korner said. “Should be close, and those who will watch this will see the very best of that conference.”

CUSA: Southern Miss (+14) at Houston

The Case Keenum Show kicked it up a notch against Tulsa on Friday, and the Cougars are so close to a BCS berth now, they can taste it.

“Houston is always trouble, we’ve been missing on these numbers,” said Korner, who recommended the Cougars as 17-point faves. “Most of our power ratings came up low on this game. We’re just jacking it up, because Houston needs a big win, of course.”

Big Ten: Michigan State (+9.5) vs. Wisconsin (Indianapolis, Ind.)

The Spartans may need more than a Hail Mary this time around, as the Badgers finally are playing up to their capabilities. Just ask Penn State, which never had a chance in Madison on Saturday.

“This will be a good game. Michigan State has played well, but Wisconsin could have been the team vying for the title game right about now. That’s how good they are,” Korner said. “Michigan State is not going to go away in this game. The score will be close for a while. But Wisconsin should show here that they could have been one of the top two or three teams in the country.”

The Sports Club sent out MSU +8 but some offshore books had this spread at 10 points late Sunday night.

ACC: Clemson (+7) vs. Virginia Tech (Charlotte, N.C.)

The Hokies have a distant chance at the BCS title game, so expect Frank Beamer’s bunch to play accordingly. Clemson had a tremendous season, but in big games, their defense has been exposed. The pros expect more of the same.

“Clemson has looked just rotten lately,” Korner said. “Our power ratings were close, but this is Virginia Tech’s game here. They’re still a good team, have been for a long time, and know how to play in these situations.”

Korner’s group recommended a lower number (4.5) than what most books opened with on Sunday.

          Pac-12: UCLA (+30.5) at Oregon

The Ducks will be kicking themselves for that home loss to USC for a long time, but they can continue to take out their frustrations here on the Bruins, and set themselves up for a BCS at-large berth.

“Whatever they want to do with this game, it’s up to Oregon,” Korner said. “Had to go with a big, big number, and let’s see where it goes.”

          Regular-Season Games:

          Oklahoma (+3) at Oklahoma State

A lot more than state pride on the line, as the Cowboys try to improve their final case for the BCS title game, and the Sooners try to lock up one of the BCS at-large berths. Should be a dandy.

“A very good game, and we were close on this line,” Korner said. “Lot of points, fun to watch, and the total is at 78. This is one of those games where whoever has the ball last will win it.”

West Virginia (Pick) at South Florida

The Big East title race is far too jumbled -- and perhaps too meaningless -- to lay out for everyone. But just know this, from the Mountaineers’ perspective. They need a win and some help. They can only control the former.

“This is a true, pick ‘em game here,” Korner said. “We know that South Florida quarterback B.J. Daniels is probable, so that plays into it. But it should be a good, clean game.”

          UConn (+9.5) at Cincinnati

Same deal here for the Bearcats. They have a chance at a BCS berth, as does West Virginia and Louisville, the latter of which isn’t even playing this week. So, expect Cincinnati to sense that and play accordingly against the Huskies.

“UConn had its day,” said Korner, referring to the Huskies’ win over Rutgers on Saturday. “So I think this one is all Cincinnati. My power ratings said 16 here, but I brought it down a little. But this one means too much to Cincinnati.”

NFL odds: Week 13 opening line report

“An NFL team getting three touchdowns is ridiculous.”

So oddsmakers told me this week. It didn’t stop them from opening the Colts as 21-point underdogs at New England.

Giving the Colts -- only the 12th NFL team in 60 years to start 0-11 – three touchdowns is the only way books can stem the tide of Patriots money pouring in lately. New England has won three straight and covered each by an average of 17.5 points.

“New England is always a public team and now that they’re on a roll again, people just bet them hand over fist and don’t care what the pointspread is,” MGM Mirage sportsbook manager Jeff Stoneback told ***********. “Well, we’ll find out what they think of 21.”

Even three touchdowns won’t entice the public to bet the Colts, Las Vegas Hilton SuperBook manager Jay Kornegay told ***********.

“They’ve been betting against the Colts pretty much every week,” he said. “I don’t think the general public is really going to touch this game. I expect the sharps to be on the dog. It’s not going to be a heavily-bet game, more of a discussion game.”

So how unusual is a three-touchdown spread? Kornegay’s research indicates it’s happened 13 times in the last four decades. The underdog is 7-4-2 ATS. (See chart below).

New England laid 24, 22 and 20.5 in 2007 as Bill Belichick repeatedly ran up scores. If you include the 20.5 New England laid against the Jets, but failed to cover in a 20-10 win, those huge dogs are 8-4-2 ATS.

“I’d take that every Sunday,” Kornegay said.

As for Colts-Pats, he added, “I’m just glad they took it off Sunday night so I don’t have to watch it.”

Wynn Las Vegas sportsbook manager John Avello noted the Colts are just 2-9 ATS this season.

“Carolina beats them at home, Jacksonville beats them at home, Atlanta creams them at home,” he told ***********. “I don’t like hanging games like this because they’re no good for business. Lots of people are going to lay off, though some might tease it down seven points to 14.”

If the spread goes over 21, Avello expects the professionals to pounce.

So far, 66 percent of Covers Consensus bettors like the Pats to cover 21.

Twice a line has gone off at 24. The defending champion Steelers laid 24 against the expansion Bucs in 1976, and the undefeated Pats laid 24 to A.J. Feeley-led Philly in 2007. (Donovan McNabb was hurt.)

Only the 1987 49ers laid such a huge number on the road.

            BIGGEST SPREAD OF THE WEEK

Indianapolis at New England (-21, 49.5)

Since the start of 2007, the Pats are 20-20-1 as home favorites. Colts-related trends seem irrelevant with No. 18 out of the lineup.

            SMALLEST SPREADS OF THE WEEK

Atlanta at Houston (1, 38.5) Tennessee at Buffalo (-1, 43.5), San Diego at Jacksonville (1.5, 38.5)

Texans rookie T.J. Yates, who hails from suburban Atlanta, is expected to start against his hometown Falcons after backup Matt Leinart broke his collarbone in Sunday’s win at Jacksonville. While it’s not an ideal situation, remember that Yates started 44 games at North Carolina and completed 67 percent of his throws as a senior, with 19 TDs and nine INTs.

“He’s got the ability, he's got the arm, he's got the brains, all those things," coach Gary Kubiak said of the fifth-round pick in preseason. “Just needs reps.”

Yates almost beat out Leinart for the backup job.

He gets to play with an outstanding running game and the NFL’s No. 1 defense. Yates didn’t commit a turnover while going 8 of 15 for 70 yards and leading a field-goal drive.

“I don’t know of a team that’s faced as much adversity as we have,” tight end Owen Daniels told the Houston Chronicle. “We got a lot accomplished with T.J. Having a game like this under his belt and getting a week of practice with the starters will definitely help him and give the coaches more confidence in him.”

While Houston has won five straight, going 4-0-1 ATS, the Chargers have lost six in a row SU and ATS.

            BIGGEST TOTALS OF THE WEEK

Detroit Lions at New Orleans Saints (-7.5, 54), Green Bay at N.Y. Giants (6.5, 52)

With Lions bad boy Ndamukong Suh expected to be suspended, Drew Brees gets a cleaner pocket. Matthew Stafford is putting points on the board for both teams; he’s thrown seven TDs and nine INTs the last three games.

The Packers are averaging 34.7 points. They had two extra days to prepare for a Giants team coming off a short week.

            SMALLEST TOTALS OF THE WEEK

Kansas City at Chicago (-9, 36.5), Baltimore at Cleveland (6.5, 37.5), St. Louis at San Francisco (-13, 37.5)

Keep an eye on the quarterback situation in K.C., where coach Todd Haley insists Tyler Palko remains the starter despite committing seven turnovers and leading the Chiefs to 12 points in two games. Kyle Orton, who arrived at the end of last week, will get some first-team reps.

Ice picks: Tuesday's best NHL bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Blues at Washington Capitals (-145, 5.5)

Let’s be honest: Bruce Boudreau isn’t exactly known as a hockey genius.

He’s probably a good guy and is generally known as a players’ coach but it was obvious his team had turned a deaf ear to his tirades. That won’t happen with Dale Hunter, one of the most feared players in the league when he laced them up.

This coaching move was long overdue for the Caps. Teams with this type of talent shouldn’t go through prolonged losing streaks every couple of months like Washington has been guilty of over the last two seasons. That’s something Hunter should put an end to immediately.

“I’m a players’ coach, but the players will know when I’m mad at them,” Hunter told reporters. “If you continuously make mistakes, there will be repercussions.”

The problem with the coaching change is that it’s probably going to be even harder to find a reasonable line for Capitals supporters, though at least they may start playing up to expectations.

                    Pick: Capitals

Florida Panthers at Carolina Hurricanes (+110, 5.5)

You have to feel for Paul Maurice. He could be one of the smartest hockey guys around, but for whatever reason, it just wasn’t working out.

However, likely the most significant reason is lack of talent. Outside of Eric Staal, Cam Ward, and Jeff Skinner, the Hurricanes don’t have a lot to fall back on. So when Staal’s off to the worst start of his career and Ward is fighting the puck, there are bound to be problems.

Kirk Muller may end up as one of the better coaches in the entire league, but he’ll have his problems with this group. The Hurricanes are one of the youngest teams in the league and have a lot to learn - which plays a big part in this coaching move.

“We may win our first game or first three games, but what I'm really looking for are new ideas," general manager Jim Rutherford told reporters. "What I also will look for is a consistent work ethic."

The work ethic may change but the results probably won’t.

                    Pick: Panthers

                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Duke Blue Devils at Ohio State Buckeyes (-5.5, 144)

Like so many of us, the Ohio State Buckeyes battled through a turkey hangover when they got back to work following Thanksgiving weekend.

They went into the half against Valparaiso up just four points. Luckily for Buckeyes bettors, they shook it off in the second half and cruised to an 80-47 victory as a 22.5-point favorite. Jared Sullinger had another huge game, posting 14 points, 13 rebounds and five assists.

“We weren’t communicating enough, and I think that’s a big sign that we weren’t ready to play,” guard Aaron Craft told reporters. “Coach always says that’s one of the biggest ‘tells’ he has when we’re not ready. We did a good job fixing that in the second half.”

They won’t get away with that kind of effort with Duke visiting Tuesday. The Blue Devils are rolling along at 6-0 straight up and just downed Michigan and Kansas to claim another Maui Invitational title, covering the number in both of those wins.

                              Pick: Blue Devils

Michigan Wolverines at Virginia Cavaliers (-2.5, 112)

Virginia heads into Tuesday’s date with the Michigan Wolverines owning one of the country’s best defenses. The Cavaliers are giving up just 45.3 points per game on 33.5 percent shooting, but they haven’t faced anything close to the caliber of offense Michigan will bring at them.

The Wolverines have already faced some tough competition at the Maui Invitational. They knocked off then-No. 8 Memphis and gave Duke a run for its money before beating UCLA in the third-place game.

"You don't know how people are going to do when all of a sudden, the teams and the coaches that you see on television every day, and all of a sudden, it's you," Michigan coach John Beilein told reporters. "I really liked what we saw from there."

Virginia has covered in 18 of its last 25 overall but Michigan is a tasty moneyline pick here.

                              Pick: Wolverines
