Sunday’s betting tips: Defense helping Tebow

    Who’s hot

NFL: The Seahawks are 5-1 ATS in their last six home games and 5-0 ATS in their last five against the NFC.

NFL: The Bears are 5-0 ATS in their last five overall and the over is 4-1 in their last five overall.

NFL: The under is 5-0 in the Jaguars’ last five overall.

NHL: The Wild are 5-1 in their last six overall and 6-1 in their last seven home games.

CFL: British Columbia is 9-2 ATS in its last 11 overall and 5-1 ATS in its last six home games.

NCAAB: Illinois is 4-1 ATS in its last five home games and the under is 6-1-1 in its last eight overall.

    Who’s not

NFL: The Rams are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 overall and the over is 1-6 in their last seven overall.

NFL: The Browns are 2-8-1 ATS in their last 11 against the AFC and 1-5 ATS in their last six road games.

NFL: The Colts are 0-6 ATS in their last six overall and 1-6 ATS in their last seven home games.

NHL: The Hurricanes are 1-6 in their last seven road games.

CFL: The over is 1-4 in British Columbia’s last five overall and 0-7 in the last seven meetings between B.C. and Winnipeg in B.C.

NCAAB: Morehead State is 0-5 ATS in its last five overall and 0-4 ATS in its last four road games.

    Key stat

85.4 – Rushing yards per game allowed by the Falcons’ defense, second best in the entire NFL behind San Francisco. That could be bad news for the Vikings, who do their best offensive work on the ground but will be without Adrian Peterson. Minnesota is fifth in the league in rushing and 28th in the league in passing. The pressure will be on Christian Ponder to deliver a big performance.

    Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

Week 12 in the NFL appears to be the week of the backup quarterbacks. The list:

Arizona – Matt Leinart in for Matt Schaub (out for the season) at Jacksonville.

Chicago – Caleb Hanie in for Jay Cutler (out for the season) at Oakland.

Philadelphia – Vince Young in for Michael Vick (confirmed out with a rib injury) vs. New England.

Kansas City – Tyler Palko in for Matt Cassel (out for the season, Palko starting ahead of recently-acquired Kyle Orton) vs. Pittsburgh.

    Biggest games on the slate

New England Patriots at Philadelphia Eagles (3.5, 50.5)

Chicago Bears at Oakland Raiders (-3, 41.5)

    Notable quotable

“I think it means a lot more to my teammates than it does to me. I feel like it's a sign of the type of defense that we've been playing…. I feel like they had to give it to somebody, so they just gave it to me. But we've been playing such good defense, anybody on the defense could have gotten it.” – Denver Broncos’ linebacker Von Miller on his AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance against the Jets last Thursday (10 tackles, nine solo, three for loss, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble). The Broncos have allowed a combined 23 points in their last two victories.

    Tips and notes

All signs point to a convincing win and lots of goals in the process for Toronto (13-8-2) when it visits Anaheim (6-12-4) on Sunday. The Maple Leafs have found the net 11 times in their current two-game winning streak and they have lit the lamp 20 times in their last four overall. Meanwhile, the Ducks have dropped six in a row and they have allowed a ridiculous 19 goals over their past four outings. Anaheim is second to last in the NHL with 16 points.

Missouri is off to a flying start under new men's basketball coach Frank Haith. Even in the absence of Laurence Bowers (out for the season with a torn ACL), the Tigers are 5-0 and 3-1 ATS. They are coming off consecutive blowouts of Notre Dame and California heading into Sunday's home game against Binghampton (0-4). According to the school's website, Missouri's 39-point victory over No. 20 Cal was its largest margin of victory over a ranked opponent in history. Marcus Denmon currently leads the squad with 19.6 points per game.

Roger Federer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be squaring off for the second time in the same tournament and for the third time in 15 days when they battle for the title at the World Tour Finals. This is the third consecutive Sunday on which they will face each other, as they clashed in the Paris final before colliding in round-robin London action last weekend. Federer won both encounters; 6-1, 7-6(3) in Paris and 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in London. Tsonga is a relatively decent 3-7 lifetime against the Swiss, but Federer has won three in a row in the head-to-head series and five of seven in 2011.

      Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Six most popular picks and six least popular picks in Hilton handicapping contest, which has 517 contestants, all of whom who pick five NFL games a week against the spread. They put up $1,500 each, so these are serious handicappers........

      T5) Detroit Lions 119
      T5) Cincinnati Bengals 119
      4) New England Patriots 122
      3) Carolina Panthers 142
      2) Chicago Bears 150
      1) Houston Texans 210

      27) Oakland Raiders 46
      28) Indianapolis Colts 42
      29) Buffalo Bills 41
      30) Minnesota Vikings 33
      31) Kansas City Chiefs 32
      32) St Louis Rams 25

      ***********************

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college sports Saturday.......

      13) Alabama left no doubt that it belongs in the national title game, with a 42-14 pounding of Auburn in the Iron Bowl; if LSU beats Georgia in the SEC title game next week, national title game will be a rematch between the Crimson Tide and the Tigers. In New Orleans. There are some people who think LSU gets in the national title game even if they lose next week.

      12) UNLV made 13-32 from arc, was +9 on boards as they upset North Carolina 90-80 at Orleans Arena. Job for Coach Dave Rice now becomes bringing his Rebels back down to earth; they leave Vegas for first time this coming week, visiting UCSB and Wichita State, two pretty good teams.

      11) USC sent the Pac-12 and the rest of the country a loud message, with a 50-0 thumping of crosstown rival UCLA; next week's first-ever conference championship game, with UCLA-Oregon meeting, is a joke. Trojans were by far the best team in the Pac-12 South and should've been in that game. Conference wouldn't let them play because they're on probation.

      10) Harvard beat Central Florida to win the Battle for Atlantis down in the Bahamas. Crimson is going to get a pretty good seed when they win the Ivy League. UConn won 3rd place game in OT over Florida State.

      9) Kentucky ended a 26-year losing streak to Tennessee, beating the Vols 10-7 and keeping them from becoming bowl eligible.

      8) Murray State beat Southern Mississippi 90-81 in double OT to win the Great Alaskan Shootout. Quite a game. Golden Eagles got to OT without ever having led in regulation, but they ran out of gas in the second OT.

      7) 12-point underdog Maryland led 41-14 at NC State with 6:00 left in the third quarter; not only didn't they win, they didn't cover the spread, as the Wolfpack outscored Maryland 42-0 over the final 20:57.

      6) San Diego State keeps winning basketball games, Aztecs escaped Santa Barbara with a 76-75 OT win Saturday night. Steve Fisher is milking a lot of wins out of a very young team.

      5) Wisconsin beat up on Penn State 45-7, will face Michigan State in the first Big Dozen title game next weekend; Spartans won first matchup on a TD on the last play of the game in a tipped ball off a Hail Mary pass.

      4) Illinois' first six games this year: 6-0, scoring 36.3 ppg.

Illinois' last six games this year: 0-6, scoring 11 ppg. Losing at Minnesota in the season finale is very bad for the coach's job security.

      3) Vanderbilt is bowl eligible, a very big deal for them, as they won 41-7 at Wake Forest; freshman QB Jordan Rodgers (Aaron's brother) has been a big spark for the Commodores.

      2) Baylor ran off 102 plays for 617 yards in a 66-42 massacre of Texas Tech-- Robert Griffin III was held out of the second half as a precaution after he got smacked in the head on a second quarter run, but Bears ran the ball for 360 yards. How the hell did Tech ever win at Oklahoma?

      1) Clemson stumbles into the ACC title game against Virginia Tech with two straight losses; Tigers were outgained 420-153 in their 34-13 at South Carolina, Clemson's third straight loss to the Gamecocks.

        CFL
        Armadillo's Write-Up

        Sunday, November 27

Winnipeg (11-8) @ BCLions (12-7)-- Lions started season 1-6; losses 5-6 both came against Winnipeg, 25-20 (+3.5) on road in Week 5, then 30-17 (-1) two weeks later- they've won 11 of 12 games since them, going 5-1 vs spread in last six games as home favorite. Bombers stumbled to 3-7 finish in regular season after starting 7-1; they're 0-4 in Grey Cups since winning title in 1990. BC coach Buono has won four Grey Cups, last one coming five years ago. Winnipeg is 5-2 as a road underdog this year. Weird playing a championship game on someone's home field, advantage Lions. Bombers have to have confidence though, after beating BC twice during the season.

Canadian Bacon: Grey Cup preview and pick
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS AT B.C. LIONS

The 99th Grey Cup promises to offer a great spectacle between two teams who followed very different paths to get there. The Lions started with a terrible 1-6 record, losing their first games of 2011. The Blue Bombers sprinted out of the gate but seemed out of breath down the stretch of the regular season.

Ironically it’s by mauling the Montreal Alouettes in the last game of the regular season that B.C. opened the door for Winnipeg to claim first place in the East and to host the Conference Finals. The Bombers lost their last three regular-season games while the B.C. Lions got in the playoffs with 11 wins in their last 12 games.

Quarterback Travis Lulay, this year’s most outstanding player, will try to continue his success and give the Lions a shot at accomplishing a rare feat: winning the Grey Cup at home, which only three teams have managed to do in the last three decades. With receivers like Geroy Simon, Arland Bruce, Akeem Foster and Paris Jackson, Lulay certainly has the tools to win the aerial battle.

But the young QB will need help from his offensive line to contain defensive ends Odell Willis and Jason Vega, two of the most efficient pass rushers in the CFL. Unlike his counterpart Buck Pierce, Lulay will have the luxury of calling plays at the line of scrimmage without being deafened by a crowd that will, without a doubt, largely be supporting the Lions.

Pierce is a tough act to follow and let’s not underestimate his resiliency in such a big game. He doesn’t mind adversity and even if he denies it, he probably would like to beat his former coach Wally Buono, who gave up on him in Vancouver because he felt the veteran QB was injury prone.

Although Lions’ running back Andrew Harris can do some damage, the Blue Bombers have a more potent ground game with Chris Garrett, who gained no less than 190 yards rushing in the East Final.

That being said, we must agree with Buono, who said this game will be fought and decided in the trenches. It is the offensive and defensive lines that will give Lulay and Pierce a chance to throw the ball, make it possible for Harris and Garrett to run with the ball, and for the receivers to catch some passes downfield.

This game will feature interesting duels involving some seasoned veterans: Glenn January against Brent Johnson, Doug Brown against Angus Reid, Odell Willis against Ben Archibald, and so forth. None of these players has a shot at being named this game’s MVP, but they are truly the ones that will be the difference-makers in a contest that could be much closer than many anticipate.

        Pick: B.C.

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Blues at Columbus Blue Jackets (120, 5.5)

Insert Curtis Sanford. Hello, winning streak (relatively speaking).

A puck to the head on Monday has sidelined starting goaltender Steve Mason and has paved the way for the unheralded Sanford to lead Columbus. And he has led the team straight out of last place in the entire NHL, past the Islanders and gaining on Anaheim and Calgary.

Sanford beat Calgary 4-1 on Monday, gave up just one goal in a 2-1 shootout loss at New Jersey on Wednesday, and he took care of Buffalo 5-1 on Friday. This week he boasts a 1.00 GAA and .963 save percentage. For the season Sanford is 3-0-2 with a 1.27 GAA and a .950 save percentage.

"I think what happens sometimes is you throw a young guy in there or a guy like Curtis, who hasn't played an NHL game in a number of years, the guys sometimes buckle down a little bit more," said head coach Scott Arniel.

The Blues, meanwhile, have won two in a row but are just 1-4 in their last five road games.

          Pick: Blue Jackets

Calgary Flames at Minnesota Wild (-133, 5)

The Wild will have to start a new streak on Sunday.

Minnesota had won five in a row but finally slowed down on Friday and lost 5-2 at home to Edmonton. Despite the setback, the team is still 13-6-3 and in first place in the Northwest Division (tied for first in the Western Conference with 29 points as of Saturday evening).

Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom has missed the last two games due to a personal matter. He was 50-50 to return for Friday's contest but Josh Harding ended up getting a second consecutive start. Backstrom, who should be minding the net against Calgary, has won his last three outings and has surrendered a total of just four goals in that span.

Calgary, meanwhile, has dropped three straight after getting blanked at St. Louis 2-0 on Friday.

The recent head-to-head series is being dominated by the Wild. They have won four in a row dating back to last season, when they took the last three meetings by a combined score of 13-2. Minnesota shut out the Flames 3-0 at home earlier this season on November 8.

          Pick: Wild

Oklahoma Sooners vs. St. Louis Billikens

Oklahoma and St. Louis are battling in the final of the 76 Classic on Sunday night in Anaheim.

Both teams have been impressive through two games. The Sooners covered spreads easily in a 74-59 win over Washington State on Friday and an 85-73 victory over Santa Clara on Saturday. The Billikens handled Boston College 62-51 before taking care of Villanova 80-68.

Oklahoma is being led by junior guard Steven Pledger. He is averaging 20 points per game both during the tournament and for the season and he has connected on 14 of 23 field-goal attempts over his last two outings.

The Sooners, though, pride themselves on getting it done with defense.

“We want to force our opponents into as many (turnovers) as we can,” explained point guard Sam Grooms. “The pressure we put on them in the full court with our defense is something we work on every day. It's nothing new. It's repetition, repetition.”

                  Pick: Oklahoma

Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

If there is a Toilet Bowl at the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, this is it.

Texas Tech fell to Indiana State 60-49 then lost to DePaul 76-70. Wake Forest was clipped by Dayton 80-76 then got blown out by Arizona State 84-56 on Friday. Thus the stage is set for the last-place game.

The Demon Deacons have done nothing to change any minds after being picked to finish dead last in the ACC. They are a decent 3-2 (no quality wins) and 2-2 ATS, but Friday's performance was brutally bad.

"We were real hurt after this one because we feel like we didn't fight at all," guard C.J. Harris said after the drubbing by the Sun Devils. "They came out and knocked us in the mouth, and we didn't do a good job of responding. That's on us."

                  Pick: Texas Tech
