    Old Spice Classic

Indiana State had 25-5 scoring edge from foul line in 60-49 win vs Texas Tech Thursday; they've got four starters back from LY's 20-14 team, are 5-0 allowing 54 ppg in last four. ISU only played six guys more than 12 minutes vs Tech. Minnesota allowed 62.2 ppg in 5-0 start, but gave up 27 more points vs DePaul than they had in any other game. Gophers had 19 offensive rebounds, played 10 guys 10+ minutes yesterday.

Dayton allowed 62 ppg in 3-1 start, with only loss at Miami Oh in OT; Flyers have three starters back from 22-14 team, also have a new coach. Fairfield forced 22 turnovers (had 13 steals) in 55-44 win over Arizona State Thursday, but Stags shot just 34%, their starting guards 4-20 from floor. Fairfield i 3-0 when it allows 60 or less points, 0-2 when it allows more than 60. A-14 teams are 14-7 vs spread if spread is 6 or less.

    Battle for Atlantis

UConn is off to 5-0 start, but this is best team they've faced so far, all five Huskies' wins were by 10+ points. Central Florida shot 50% from floor, just 13-27 from line Thursday- their only loss is to Florida State, a team with athletes similar to UConn. Knights have all five starters back from LY. Conference USA road underdogs are 4-6 vs spread. Big East favorites are 14-19 vs spread, 5-5 on the road.

Florida State scored 77 ppg in its 5-0 start, with all five wins by 12+ so far; they held UMass to 28% Thursday, 2-23 from arc, while blocking nine shots. Harvard beat Utah by 30 Thursday, and didn't play anyone more than 24 minutes; they have five starters back from LY's 23-7 team that lost Ivy title game at buzzer. Harvard can rightfully lay claim to an at-large bid in March if they win this game and slip up in Ivy.

    Preseason NIT final

Boeheim is coaching his 112th game in Garden; this is like home game for Syracuse team that is blocking 27% of opponents' shots, top %age in country. Orange was down at half to Va Tech last game, rallied to win easily by 11. Stanford is 5-0, allowing 55.8 ppg, but only team they've played in top 150 was distracted Oklahoma State squad. Big East single digit favorites are 6-7 vs spread. Pac-10 single digit road dogs are 7-7-1.

    76 Classic

Saint Louis is 4-0, beating Southern Illinois by 19, Washington by 13 and BC by 11- they forced 21 turnovers Thursday but didn't finish well around basket. Villanova is 4-0, crushing outmanned Riverside in first round, but Wildcat bench contributed only three hoops on 13 shots in its 72:00 of play Thursday. Billikens have all five starters back from LY. Villanova is younger team, with only two starters back from LY.

Santa Clara lost by 33 at Santa Barbara, then best San Jose by 26, before terrific OT win last night; Broncos hit 11-25 3's last night, but also had three guys play 41+ minutes. Oklahoma has new coach (Kruger), four starters back from its 14-18 team that got last coach fired; Sooners were +11 in turnovers vs Washington State, with six guys playing 24:00+ and 7th guy playing 13. Broncos have three starters back from 24-14 team.

    Alaskan Shootout

San Francisco survived Dartmouth's 10-23 shooting from arc to advance here; Dons are 5-1, but three of their last four wins were by either 1 or 2 points. USF has all five starters back from LY's 19-15 team. Murray St. lost three starters from LY's 23-9 team; they're 5-0, beating UAB by 7, Anchorage by only a hoop. OVC road teams are 7-2 vs spread in games where spread is six or less points, all this one should be.

New Mexico State is 4-0, winning by 14-9-16-29 points; Aggies get to foul line better than anyone in US right now- they were 35-49 from foul line last night and grabbed 24 offensive boards. Southern Mississippi is 2-1 vs D-I teams, splitting pair of games in Colorado on way to Alaska, then beating Cal-Irvine by 11 last night; Eagles played seven guys last night; they've got three starters back from LY's 22-10 team.

    Other games

Xavier is 3-0 but hasn't really been tested yet; best team they've beaten is Miami, O (66-60), ranked #134. #68 Georgia is 4-1, allowing 54.3 ppg in its wins, 70 in loss to Cal; Dawgs lost four starters from LY but have good coach and lot of young talent. Musketeers have three starters back from 24-8 team. SEC underdogs are 7-2 vs spread this season. Xavier shot just 52.2% from foul line in its first three games.

Rhode Island is 0-3 but hasn't played home game yet, losing at George Mason in OT, by 10 at Texas, 20 at Nebraska; allowing 91.7 ppg. Rams were 2-0 vs CAA squads LY, winning by 6-12 points. Hofstra leads the country, making 50% of 3-pointers in 2-2 start, losing to FAU by hoop, at Oregon State by 10, beating two stiffs. A-14 home favorites are 7-3 vs spread. CAA road underdogs of 13 or less points are 1-9 vs spread.

Cincinnati is 3-1 but hasn't played anyone ranked higher than #219; bad loss to Presbyterian is hard to forget. Marshall allowed just 54.5 ppg in 4-0 start, but they haven't played club ranked higher than #236; Herd has four starters back from a 22-12 team that didn't shoot well but was a top 20 club on offensive boards. Big East home favorites are 9-14 vs the spread. Conference USA road underdogs are 5-6.

UNLV hasn't left home yet, but they go crosstown here to play tourney in smaller Orleans Arena; Rebels are 5-0, but only team they played in top 180 was Nevada (won 71-67). USC is scoring just 56.4 ppg in 2-3 start, with losses by 3-2-6 points to Nebraska-San Diego State and Cal Poly (ouch). Trojans lost their PG to knee injury on trip to Brazil this summer. Mountain West home favorites are 7-8 against the spread.

College funds: Friday's best NCAAB bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ohio Bobcats at Louisville Cardinals (-16, N/A)

Nobody ever said playing for Rick Pitino was easy. He demands a lot out of his players with the systems he installs, but when everybody can get on the same page, Louisville can be tough to beat.

So far it looks as though he has a bunch of quick learners on this season’s squad.

“Our communication verbally, our switching, we’re doing some awesome things that none of my teams have been able to master at this early time,” Pitino told reporters after Louisville drilled Arkansas St 54-27 as a 22-point favorite.

The blowout moved Louisville to 4-0 straight up and 3-0 against the spread on the year and the Cardinals are giving up just 44 points per game.

The under is also 19-6-1 in Louisville’s last 26 home games.

        Pick: Cardinals

Georgia Bulldogs at Xavier Musketeers (-10, N/A)

After last season, Georgia coach Mark Ford expected to have at least one of his top two prospects back for this year. That didn’t happen as both Trey Thompkins and Travis Leslie declared for the NBA.

Now the Bulldogs are learning on the fly through a tough early schedule with a young roster. They’ve been predictably up-and-down so far, but improved to 4-1 straight up and 2-2 against the spread with an upset win over Notre Dame Tuesday.

“This schedule is challenging and for a young team, it’s extra challenging,” Fox told reporters after the game. “You gotta learn how to beat good teams and you don’t learn how to beat good teams by just playing bad ones. So we’re gonna have to grow up on the job. We’re gonna have a lot of teachable moments like we had against Cal and Notre Dame. There is just so much for this group to experience.”

We like what Georgia showed against the Irish. If they can get a similar effort Friday, they'll be in this game.

        Pick: Georgia

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NIT Season Tip-Off action: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stanford Cardinal vs. Syracuse Orange (-9, 136)

THE STORY: Fifth-ranked Syracuse meets Stanford in the championship game of the NIT Season Tip-Off at Madison Square Garden. The Orange beat Virginia Tech 69-58 in the semifinals, while the Cardinal knocked off Oklahoma State 82-67. Stanford is looking for its first fall tournament crown in four years, while Syracuse is off to its eighth consecutive 5-0 start. The Orange have played 131 games at Madison Square Garden under Jim Boeheim (68-43 record), so they’ll have a huge home-court advantage. These two teams have never met.

          TV: 5 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT STANFORD (5-0): The Cardinal led 46-35 at the half against Oklahoma State on Wednesday, and then used a 12-0 run to break the game open at the start of the second. Senior forward Josh Owens scored 21 points on 10-of-12 field goals to lead Stanford, which made a season-best 9 of 19 from behind the arc. Owens and sophomore guard Aaron Bright both average a team-high 14 points, and freshman guard Chasson Randle is the only other player in double figures with 10.4 points per game.

ABOUT SYRACUSE (5-0): The Orange, who have won their first five games by an average of 28.2 points, boast one of the deepest rotations in the nation. Nineteen different players have appeared in games so far, and 10 of those are averaging at least 12 minutes. Senior forward Kris Joseph leads the way with 14.8 points per game, but Dion Waiters and James Southerland also contribute off the bench. Waiters, a sophomore guard, averages 13.2 points and Southerland, a junior forward, scores 11.

          TRENDS:

          * Cardinal are 1-5 ATS in their last six neutral-site games.
          * Orange are 6-0 ATS in their last six non-conference games.
          * Over is 4-0 in Cardinal's last four vs. Big East.
          * Over is 5-2 in Orange's last seven non-conference games.

          TIP-INS:

          1. This is the second of at least four games the Orange will play in Madison Square Garden this season. They face St. John’s later and then conclude the season there in the Big East Tournament.

          2. Stanford is 12-26 all-time against teams from the Big East.

          3. This is the Cardinal’s fourth appearance in the preseason NIT, and they’ve been runner-up the last two times (2002 and 1998).

Virginia Tech Hokies vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys (N/A)

THE STORY: In the consolation game of the NIT Season Tip-Off at Madison Square Garden, Virginia Tech meets Oklahoma State after both teams were dealt their first loss of the season Wednesday night. The Hokies lost 69-58 to No. 5 Syracuse, while the Cowboys had an 82-67 setback against Stanford. It’s a bit of a quirky matchup, because these two teams will meet again on New Year’s Eve at Oklahoma State’s Gallagher-Iba Arena. Virginia Tech beat the Cowboys in their first-ever meeting last year in Anaheim.

          TV: 2:30 p.m. ET; ESPN/ESPN2

ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH (3-1): The Hokies opened the year with home victories over East Tennessee State, Monmouth and Florida International before losing to Syracuse. The Hokies led by two at the break against the Orange but ended up getting worn down in the second half. Dorenzo Hudson leads the team with 17.8 points per game, including 31in the win over Florida International, but the senior guard scored only 13 on 3-of-7 shooting against Syracuse.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA STATE (3-1): The Cowboys started the season with home wins against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Texas-San Antonio before the loss to Stanford. Before that game, Oklahoma State had won four games in a row at Madison Square Garden, but the Cardinal led 46-35 at the break and opened the second half on a12-0 run. Freshman Le’Bryan Nash was one of the most hyped recruits in recent memory for the Cowboys, and he’s averaging 13 points, but another freshman leads the team scoring. Point guard Cezar Guerrero is scoring 14 points per game off the bench.

          TRENDS:
          * Oklahoma State is 6-13 against the spread in its last 19 overall.
          * Virginia Tech is 1-4 against the number in its last five neutral site games.
          * The under is 8-2 in Oklahoma State's last 10.

          TIP-INS:

          1. Oklahoma State’s Jean-Paul Olukemi is coming off a zero-point, four-foul performance.

          2. Olukemi scored 22 against Virginia Tech in a 56-51 loss last season.

          3. Virginia Tech’s J.T. Thompson and Marquis Rankin are both out with knee injuries. Thompson is out for the season, but Rankin is expected to return within the next few weeks.
