Wednesday's betting tips: Wildcats ride ATS skid at home

    Who’s hot

NHL: The Boston Bruins have won nine straight.

NHL: Minnesota is 8-2 in its last 10.

NCAAB: Kentucky has covered the spread in six of its last eight.

NCAAB: Ohio State is 6-2 against the number in its last eight non-conference games.

    Who’s not

NHL: Anaheim is 3-13 in its last 16 overall.

NHL: The New York Islanders are 6-20 in their last 26.

NCAAB: Alabama A&M is riding an 0-7 run against the spread.

NCAAB: Arizona is 0-5 against the spread in its last five home games.

    Key stat

32.1 – NHL favorites on the puckline have won just 32.1 percent of their games so far this season, while underdogs sit at nearly 68 percent. Pittsburgh leads the league’s money standings up 11.66 units while the New York Islanders sit last at -15.46 units.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Jaromir Jagr, Philadelphia Flyers – Jagr hopes to return to the lineup for Wednesday’s game against the New York Islanders but is still considered questionable. Jagr has sat out the past two games due to a groin injury. He has been undergoing acupuncture treatments to alleviate pain. In 18 games, the 39-
    Game of the day

Chicago Blackhawks at San Jose Sharks (-140, 5.5)

    Notable quotable

"I would like to take their phone, their Facebook, their Twitter, their freedom, their keys to their room, their card, and send them all to the same building on Friday night. But part of the world we live in - that age group of 19, 21, 22, 23 - there's just a lot of things happening in their lives, and … we try our very best to give as much freedom as we can, so they can grow as people, as students, as athletes.” - Arizona hoops coach Sean Miller. The No. 23 Wildcats are set as 7-point favorites at home to San Diego State.

    Notes and tips

Nevada dismissed leading rusher Mike Ball from the team on Tuesday for a violation of team rules. The junior running back has rushed for 704 yards and three touchdowns in eight games this season. Ball had three 100-yard games, including a season-high 198 in a 45-38 victory over Fresno State on Oct. 22. Oddsmakers had Nevada set as a 1-point favorite at the open as they get set to visit Utah State Saturday but are now listed at +1.5.

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas is feeling some major heat as his club has lost three of its last four Premier League matches ahead of Wednesday's Champs League affair with Bayer Leverkusen. "I want to get my team back to winning ways," he told reporters. "As we enter a run of results, we do not want to go into the negative spiral this team went through last year. The emotions these players lived then are enough to make them want to avoid that stigma again." Chelsea is currently pegged as a +125 favorite.

Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said a broken thumb will not prevent quarterback Ben Roethlisberger from playing in Sunday's game against Kansas City. Roethlisberger fractured the thumb on his throwing hand in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Nov. 13. He did not take snaps in Monday's practice but said there was no chance he would not play Sunday. Roethlisberger has thrown for 2,877 yards with 16 scoring passes and nine interceptions for Pittsburgh (7-3), which is tied with Baltimore atop the AFC North. The Steelers are pegged as 10.5-point road favorites at Arrowhead.

      Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Broncos cut Kyle Orton, which makes Brady Quinn the backup QB; will be interested to see which team picks up Orton.

-- Eldrick Woods is 8-1 favorite to win the 2012 Masters; McIlroy is at 10-1, Mickelson 15-1. Woods hasn't won anything in two years.

-- Former Clemson coach Cliff Ellis brought his Coastal Carolina team to Littlejohn Coliseum and upset the Tigers 60-59; Chanticleers are the best team in the Big South. Could make some noise in March.

-- Memphis' 99-97 double OT win over Tennessee was a Maui Classic. Weird that teams in same state had to go 2,000 miles for that game.

-- Missouri was very impressive in crushing the Cal Bears; veteran team will be tough in their final season in the Big X.

-- Kansas beat UCLA by 16, but at least the Bruins showed some life in the second half. Very strange team Ben Howland has.

      *******************

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

      13) OK, so the Jets’ defensive coordinator is a guy named Mike Pettine; turns out this guy was on a TV reality show back in 2002, when he was a high school coach in Pennsylvania, and his team’s arch-rival was the area's traditional power, coached by his father.

Cameras followed both teams; lot of interesting stuff, but if you told me this guy would’ve wound up as an NFL coordinator, I would’ve scoffed. You put the TV on and there he is. Good for him.

      12) Oregon’s prize basketball recruit, Jabari Brown, has left the Ducks after two games; going to be very, very interesting to see where he winds up. Imagine having a big bucks job where your future hinges on the flightiness of an 18-year old and his "people"?

      11) Usually on Selection Sunday, the last two teams announced are a 7-10 first-round game, because it builds drama, with the 10-seed generally being a bubble team. I can already see it this year; Northwestern has never been in the NCAAs, but you know CBS wants them in, because they’d carry the Chicago market, which is big. Wildcats are going to play in a 7-10 first round game, and their reaction on TV when their name goes up on the board is going to be priceless.

      10) Surprising stat: Tony Romo has a career record of 18-2 as a starter in November.

      9) They started a College Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City, which is great, but if you’re going to do it, do it right. Eddie Sutton is being inducted and Jerry Tarkanian isn’t. I want to hear the argument for this; what imbeciles vote on this? No matter which direction you come from, Tarkanian is the stronger candidate. Remember now, you can’t throw ethics at Tark if you’ve voted Sutton in.

      8) Julius Erving’s 1974 ABA championship ring sold at auction last week for a whopping $460,741. All in all, he sold 144 items at auction for a combined $3,552,627. Hopefully that’s enough to get him out of his financial mess. Athletes need to learn how to handle their money better.

      7) UCLA suspended Reeves Nelson for the Middle Tennessee State game, then re-instated him, but the kid missed UCLA’s flight to Maui. Whoops. Nelson played OK against Kansas, but Bruins are clearly a team in trouble. Could to be long year for Ben Howland in Westwood.

      6) Phillies traded for Ty Wigginton, which means he finally gets to play on a good team; Wigginton will platoon at 1B with John Mayberry until Ryan Howard’s torn Achilles tendon is healed next summer.

      5) Eagles didn’t miss injured WR Jeremy Maclin that much against the Giants, because backup QB Vince Young has good chemistry with Maclin’s backups, who practice with Young on the scout team. They will need both Maclin and Jackson against the Patriots this week.

      4) Steeler fans will be glad to know that NBC chose Lions-Saints for the December 4 Sunday night game; Bengals-Steelers was the other strong option. Who wants to sit out in the December cold at night, when you have to work the next day?

      3) Big pat on the back to Jim Boeheim for staunchly defending his friend Bernie Fine in his greatest moment of need; the two have been friends for almost 50 years. Boeheim showed he is no politician, and that’s a compliment. No idea if Fine is guilty or innocent, but you're innocent until proven guilty and Fine needs friends right now.

      2) In their last four games, Seahawks have been whistled for 47 penalties worth 368 yards; their opponents have been called for 23 penalties for 231 yards. No coincidence that Seattle’s offensive line coach is former Raiders’ head coach Tom Cable.

      1) The six NFL teams playing Thanksgiving Day have a combined record this year of 47-18, which takes many of this week’s best matchups away from Sunday TV, which has to both surprise and disappoint the league.

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Blackhawks at San Jose Sharks (-140, 5.5)

Making too much of Chicago’s 9-2 blowout loss to Edmonton over the weekend is probably a mistake. Then again, not making enough of it would also be a problem.

A team with Chicago’s talent should never get run out of the rink like they did in Edmonton and it was the way the Blackhawks let it happen. Sure, Dan Carcillo mixed it up a bit in the third period and there were a few shoving matches, but Chicago should have been fit to be tied.

Maybe they had other things on the mind – like the trip to Vegas the club embarked on after getting outscored 14-4 in Alberta. What’s most concerning is this is the part of the schedule Chicago should be banking points.

“We haven’t had a super difficult schedule as far as teams,” Sean O'Donnell told reporters. “I’m hoping these two losses kind of wake us up a little bit. It’s good to get away.”

We’ll believe it when we see it.

              Pick: San Jose

Winnipeg Jets at Washington Capitals (-200, 5.5)

Things are just getting nasty in Washington and Bruce Boudreau had better get his club going before it’s too late.

Not that he isn’t trying. Washington’s bench boss banished Alex Semin to the press box in Monday’s 4-3 over Phoenix and has publicly sparred with struggling superstar Alex Ovechkin.

Monday’s win was just Washington’s second in eight games and critics continue to blast the club for its sloppy play. Granted a win is two points no matter how you slice it, but it wasn’t an overly impressive victory.

“We know one win doesn’t make up for what we’ve been going through the last couple weeks, but it definitely lightens the room up,” Mike Knuble told reporters. “It’s nice to go home not feeling so down.”

The Caps have been a lot better at home (7-1-1), but they don’t deserve this type of chalk. Jump on the dog or play the over.

              Pick: Over

Siena won two of first three games, losing by 6 to St Bonaventure, but they're using 6-man rotation, which is probably why they're shooting a crummy 29.4% behind arc. Memphis won double OT game vs in-state rival Tennessee yesterday, now faces Georgetown team that had glorified practice in easy win over host Chaminade. Tigers also had tough game Monday but are deep, with three subs playing 33+ minutes Tuesday. Hoyas play seven guys- they are 3-1, losing tough game to Kansas 67-63 late Monday night.

Kansas is young, thinner than usual but talented; they've beaten UCLA by 16, Georgetown by 4 this week. Jayhawks' bench played total of 44 minutes vs UCLA, 52 vs Georgetown. Duke had two decent tests so far on Maui, beating Tennessee by 10, Michigan by 7; Blue Devils aren't a great defensive team, allowing Belmont 76 points, Michigan 75, but can Kansas shoot ball well enough to take advantage?

Michigan is well-coached; UCLA acts like they hate each other, but they did show spark in second half of 72-56 loss to Kansas Tuesday, cutting lead to 5 at one point. Wolverines play 1-3-1 defense that is hard to get ready for; Bruins made 8-14 from arc last night, still lost by 16. Third day in row for Michigan; UCLA had easy win vs Chaminade Monday.

Virginia Tech Hokies at Syracuse Orange (-8, N/A)

Amid all the controversy surrounding the investigation of Bernie Fine, the Syracuse Orange just keep doing their thing as they get ready for the NIT semifinal.

For the record, coach Jim Boeheim reiterated his support for Fine in the sexual assault investigation.

“I’ve been friends for 50 years with Coach Fine, and that buys a lot of loyalty to me,” Boeheim told reporters. “Our program will be fine. It’s been pretty good for 36 years. We’ve been through a lot of different things. We’ll get through it.”

Meanwhile, Syracuse is perfect straight up and against the number heading into Wednesday’s date Virginia Tech and the Hokies could have a tough time dealing with the Orange’s balanced attack. James Southerland, Dion Waiters and Kris Joseph are all scoring better than 13 points per game.

Plus, Syracuse is holding its opposition to 34.7 percent shooting from the floor.

                      Pick: Orange

San Diego State Aztecs at Arizona Wildcats (-7, N/A)

To the casual sports fan, Arizona’s 4-1 straight up start to the season looks pretty good. College hoops bettors know better.

The Wildcats are only 1-4 against the spread and this is already shaping up to be a trying season for coach Sean Miller. Arizona suspended 6-foot-8, 235-pound freshman Sidiki Johnson Tuesday for violating a team policy.

However, the young Wildcats did gain some valuable experience in New York, where they dropped a 67-57 decision to Mississippi State in the 2K Championship game as 5.5-point favorites.

"We played against a lot of different styles," Miller told reporters. "Duquesne pressed. We saw a lot of fast pace. St. John's zoned, but was fast-paced. Mississippi State played man-to-man, but it was at a very slow tempo and we didn't handle it well."

San Diego State is another young club struggling against the number but we think they'll give Arizona a good run.

                      Pick: Aztecs
