Maui Classic Semifinals
November 22, 2011
Duke and Michigan will square off tonight in the semifinals of the Maui Classic at 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPNU. This is a rematch of a second-round game in last year’s NCAA Tournament when the Blue Devils won a 73-71 decision when Darius Morris’s potential tying bucket at the buzzer was off the mark.
Michigan (4-0 straight up, 1-1 against the spread) stayed undefeated with Monday’s 73-61 win over Memphis as a 4 ½-point underdog. The Wolverines cashed money-line tickets in the plus-180 range (risk $100 to win $180).
Tim Hardaway Jr. was the catalyst for the winners, finishing with 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Freshman point guard Trey Burke provided a big lift with 14 points and four assists.
John Beilein’s team has its entire nucleus back with the exception of Morris, who was a second-round pick to the Lakers in the NBA Draft. For our purposes, last year’s Michigan team was one for the ages as it cashed tickets at a 15-1 ATS clip in the last two months of the season.
Hardaway is the star but senior Zach Novak is the team’s leader. Novak makes timely shots, rebounds well, devours loose balls and takes charges galore. Hardaway is a steady scorer that can get his buckets in every conceivable way. He has an excellent shot from 3-point range, can score off the dribble and can post up smaller players.
Duke (5-0 SU, 1-4 ATS) captured a 77-67 win over Tennessee in the opening round, but it failed to cover the number for a third straight game. Austin Rivers scored a game-high 18 points, while Ryan Kelly and Seth Curry scored 17 points apiece.
Mike Krzyzewski’s squad had wins over Belmont (77-76), Presbyterian (96-55), Michigan State (74-69) and Davidson (82-69) before beating the Volunteers, who nonetheless hooked up their backers as 12-point underdogs.
The ‘over’ is 4-1 overall for Duke. The ‘under’ is 1-0-1 for Michigan after its win over Memphis resulted in a push with the total of 134.
As of early this afternoon, most betting shops had Duke installed as a seven-point favorite with a total of 133. The Wolverines are available to win outright for a plus-250 payout (risk $100 to win $250).
UCLA and Kansas will collide in the other semifinal matchup at 9:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.
Most spots are listing Kansas (2-1 SU, 1-2 ATS) as an 8 ½-point ‘chalk’ with a total of 141. The Bruins are plus-325 on the money line.
Bill Self’s team won a 67-63 decision over Georgetown early this morning (midnight Eastern tip-off), but the Hoyas took the cash as 5 ½-point underdogs. Thomas Robinson led the Jayhawks with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Tyshawn Taylor chipped in with 16 points.
UCLA (1-2 SU, 1-2 ATS) had an easier time of it Monday, drilling Chaminade by a 92-60 count as a 13 ½-point favorite. Lazeric Jones led five double-figure scorers with 19 points, seven assists and six rebounds.
Ben Howland’s team was glad to get away from L.A. after dropping its first two games at home by double-digit margins. And UCLA was a double-digit favorite in both contests!
The Bruins lost their opener 69-58 to Loyola-Marymount and then got trounced 86-66 by Middle Tennessee. The ‘over’ is 2-1 for UCLA, cashing in its last two outings.
On the other hand, the ‘under’ is 2-1 for KU.
Memphis is a four-point favorite vs. Tennessee in a loser’s bracket matchup on ESPN2 at 2:00 p.m. Eastern. The total is 145 and the Vols are plus-150 on the money line.
The other consolation contest will pit host Chaminade against Georgetown at 4:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2. The Hoyas are favored by 22 and the total is 139 ½.
