42 – Miami (Ohio) RedHawks quarterback Zac Dysert completed 42 of his 54 pass attempts last week against Western Michigan, snapping Ben Roethlisberger’s record of 41 completions in a single game. Dysert has completed better than 73 percent of his passing attempts over the past five games.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Matt Hasselbeck, Tennessee Titans – After leaving Sunday’s loss to Atlanta with an arm injury, Hasselbeck suffered no structural damage to his right forearm and elbow, and simply has a muscle strain. He underwent tests Monday that came back negative. Coach Mike Munchak said his signal caller will be day to day for practice and could play against Tampa Bay depending on how well he is throwing the football. Rookie Jake Locker replaced Hasselbeck on Sunday and threw his first two NFL touchdown passes. Hasselbeck has passed for 2,357 yards and 14 touchdowns this season. Tennessee opened as 3.5-point favorites at home to Tampa Bay.

The Illinois Fighting Illini are struggling with their outside shooting early this season and they could have a tough time from outside again Tuesday against Richmond. 32) Colts—Can now win a game and still get first pick, but the Barkley kid at USC is starting to impress some people as much as Andrew Luck; the ability to cash in here with a trade bonanza may not be what it once was.

31) Rams—I’m tired of complaining about my favorite team, but getting pounded twice by the hideous 49ers this December isn’t going to do much for my holiday spirit.

30) Browns—I’m curious if they really think Colt McCoy is their QB of the future. Not saying he can’t be, just wondering if they think he is. Their games are really hard to watch.

29) Panthers—On the other hand, Carolina is fun to watch, because their QB can play a little, and their defense stinks, so there are lot of points scored in their games. If you’re going to have an awful team, have an awful team that’s fun to watch. That’s my advice for the day.

28) Redskins-- Somewhere in the afterlife, Al Davis looks on and smiles at Mike Shanahan’s struggles. Its not quite as easy without Elway under center.

8) Texans—Matt Leinart, the stage is yours. We’ll find out quickly if you’ve prepared well enough.

7) Bears—Wouldn’t worry about Caleb Hanie. No one coaches up backup QBs like Mike Martz. He even made Marc Bulger look good.

6) Steelers—Think they’re better than Ravens, but since they lost twice to them…….

5) Ravens— Haven’t played good games back-to-back; starting to look old on defense. Don’t trust Flacco unless he’s throwing deep.

4) Saints—Week 11 bye had to be welcome, but teams can’t like having Monday night game after the bye; sets up a short week right after.

3) Patriots— Opposed Tyler Palko is his first NFL start this week, get Vince Young Sunday; Palko was the reason Joe Flacco transferred from Pitt to Delaware.

2) 49ers—Haven’t allowed a first half TD in last four games (48-12); for season, have started 24 drives in enemy territory. Opponents have started six in 49er territory.

Los Angeles Kings at St. Louis Blues (-130, 5)

The St. Louis Blues caught some flack for dumping Davis Payne in favor of Ken Hitchcock so early this season but it seems to have lit a spark under the club.

The Blues haven’t lost in regulation since Hitchcock took over, though they were hardly satisfied with Saturday’s 3-2 shootout loss to Minnesota. St. Louis gave up a shorthanded goal to Mikko Koivu and couldn’t hold a 2-1 lead in the third period but picking up another point has them in the thick of the race in the Central division.

"We've been able to respond to the challenge," Hitchcock told reporters. "We haven't been overwhelmed by the challenge that's there. We've gotten really pushed hard by some awful good teams and the one thing we've been able to do is respond to the challenge.”

Hitchcock doesn’t let anything slide and he’ll have the Blues ready for this one.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Tampa Bay Lightning (-150, 5.5)

The Tampa Bay Lightning normally don’t have many issues on offense. Their problems normally stem from a lack of depth on the back end.

They have dropped three of their last four, but Victor Hedman is back on the blue line and veteran Mattias Ohlund may not be far behind as he rehabs from arthroscopic knee surgery.

"We know that on defense it's been very tough for us since the beginning of the year, and on the road we have been exposed and one of the big reasons is that we have played without Ohlund," coach Guy Boucher told reporters. "He plays against the first lines, he brings physicality, he's smart and top lines don't like to play against him because they know they could get knocked down at any moment.”

Until they have him back, Tampa will continue to struggle in its own zone.

Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL bets

HOT TEAM: Minnesota Wild

They still play tight defense, they can still slow it down with the best of them, and they still have solid goaltending, all staples of the original Wild under coach Jacques Lemaire.

But this version has some serious star power, and can score a little bit too. Under new coach Mike Yeo, the Wild have won eight of their last 10 games, and will take a four-game winning streak into Wednesday’s tilt versus Nashville.

The numbers aren’t great from the high-priced players, but when you win, and fill seats, that’s really all that matters, and both have been the case in Minnesota. Dany Heatley has five goals and 12 points, Devin Setoguchi has six and 10, and Mikko Koivu finally broke out on Saturday with two goals vs. St. Louis, and now has 10 points on the season.

It all adds up to a deep set of forwards in the Western Conference, and when you have a decent tandem in net -- like the Wild do in Niklas Backstrom (7-4-2, 1.97 goals-against average) and Josh Harding (5-1-1, 1.79) -- you’re going to win your fair share of games.

And keep Minnesota on your radar this week, as they open a four-game homestand, after three days off. Starting Wednesday, they will play the Predators, Oilers, Flames and Lightning in a six-day span, but all of them will be in St. Paul.

COLD TEAM: New York Islanders

There was definitely some preseason buzz around the Islanders headed into what appeared to be a season of promise. Their young goal scorers up front -- John Tavares, Michael Grabner, and Matt Moulson -- were coming off breakout seasons, and workhorse defenseman Mark Streit was healthy again after missing last year.

Indeed, it looked like a postseason berth might be in the cards.

Well, the best laid plans? Not so much. Streit is a minus-13, Kyle Okposo, who has yet to score a goal, has been a healthy scratch of late, and the Islanders have lost five of the last six games headed into Monday’s contest versus Pittsburgh.
New York is just 2-6 in November, and on Saturday, the Islanders were blown out on home ice, dropping a 6-0 decision to surging Boston.

OVER PLAY: Chicago Blackhawks

A little weekend hiccup in Western Canada, versus Calgary and Edmonton on back to back nights, notwithstanding, Chicago has it rolling again this season, and appears very much like it intends to make some noise in the postseason yet again.

At the apex of the surge has been the names you’d expect on the scoring sheet. Jonathan Toews, Marian Hossa, Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp have lived up to billing with 10, nine, seven and seven goals, respectively.

And as a result, the Blackhawks have become a fairly reasonable over buy. In fact, Chicago will take a four-game over streak into Wednesday’s tilt versus San Jose, and in the last nine Blackhawks games, seven have been pushed past the total.

Of course, inconsistent goaltending helps the cause when it comes to overs, and Chicago, too, has delivered there, as well. Saturday against Edmonton was a perfect example. The Blackhawks had no answers, and nowhere to turn in net, as Ray Emery and Corey Crawford combined to make just 25 saves, while allowing nine goals. Ouch.

UNDER PLAY: Dallas Stars

Goaltender Kari Lehtonen has calmed down a bit, but he still has some decent numbers. With an 11-4 mark, and a 2.44 goals-against average, he has still helped Dallas to the label of one of the better under plays out there.

His backup, Andrew Raycroft, hasn’t been great, though, posting an 0-4 mark with a 3.55 goals-against. But either way, Dallas has still managed consecutive unders and three in the last five games as the Stars prepare to take on Edmonton on Monday night.

Of course, it helps the cause when you can’t score, and that’s the funk Dallas is in right now. Consider the last five games. In four of them, the Stars scored two goals or less. And in two of them, they were shut out.

SURVEYING THE SCHEDULE

** The Columbus Blue Jackets won a game Saturday. That’s No. 4 on the year, and believe it or not, they’re actually on a 2-2 run. Keep them in your sights this week, though, as they play three games in five days through the holiday, starting with Monday against Calgary.

** The Penguins, still without injured center Sidney Crosby, will be a busy bunch, too. On Monday, a home game against the Islanders begins a stretch of four games in six days through the holiday weekend, three of which are at home.

Richmond lost four starters from 29-8 team that made run to Sweet 16; Spiders are 3-1 this year, allowing 61 or less points in all four games, but they're taking big step up here, visiting Illinois club that won first three games, all by 15+ points (all vs stiff teams). Illini have four new starters after last group was disappointing 20-14, 9-9 in league. Spiders lost by 13 at Davidson, in only game vs team ranked in top 200 (71).

Buffalo won six of last seven games vs local rival Canisius, with four of the six wins by 5 or less points; Bulls beat St Peter's of MAAC by 7, split pair of 8-point decisions vs Ivy League teams. Griffins still haven't played home game; they're 1-2, losing by 9 at James Madison, by 25 at UNLV five nights ago. MAAC road underdogs are 8-6 againt spread. MAC home favorites are 4-3.

Georgia lost to Cal by 24 last night, after allowing 54.7 ppg during 3-0 start; they shot 33% last night. Dawgs have two starters back from LY's 23-12 team (9-7 in SEC), but they're talented. Notre Dame got whacked by 29 by Missouri last night, its first loss in five games; they've got two starters back from 27-7 team that was 14-4 in league. SEC teams are 12-6 vs spread away from home so far this season.

Memphis beat good Belmont team by 16 in it opener, but lost by 12 to Michigan Monday, shooting 33% and getting outrebounded by 13; they have have all five starters back from 25-10 team that was 10-6 in C-USA LY. Tennessee lost four starters and its coach from 19-15 team that was 8-8 in SEC; Vols allowed 62.5 ppg in waxing couple of stiffs by 29-23, but they lost by 10 to Duke Monday, going 0-8 behind the arc.

Michigan allowed 51 ppg in winning by 17-4 point vs pair of stiff D-I teams- they held Memphis to 61 Monday, holding Tigers to 33% from floor, while shooting 53%. Big Dozen road teams are 8-2 vs spread if spread is less than 9 points. Duke only got seven points from its bench in 10-point win over Tennessee. Michigan's 1-3-1 defense can be tough to prepare for on short notice. This is an interesting game.

Kansas team that is younger/thinner than usual, but is still picked to win Big X; their starters shot 54% Monday, bench was 3-12 in 4-point win over Georgetown. UCLA has already lost to LMU/Middle Tennessee; they got only 11 minutes from Nelson (missed flight after suspension game before that) Monday- they had glorified workout in easy win over Chaminade. Big X teams are 0-6-1 vs spread away from home this season. Pac-10 underdogs are 6-4-1 vs spread away from home.

Missouri is off to 4-0 start, waxing Notre Dame by 29- their starters hit 64% from floor last night, in first win vs top 200 team. California has four starters back from 18-15 team that was 10-8 in league LY; Bears are also off to 4-0 start, winning by 21-27-17-24 points, allowing 53 ppg. Both teams are experienced. Mizzou will have crowd edge with game in Kansas City. Cal has better coach with Montgomery former NBA guy.

La Salle Explorers at Pittsburgh Panthers (-16.5)

Last week we told you to be careful betting the Pitt Panthers early in the year. Hopefully you listened.

Pitt was stunned 86-76 by Long Beach State in its home opener, dropping the cash as a fat 13.5-point favorite and after the game it didn’t seem like Panthers coach Jamie Dixon was overly surprised.

"We have a lot of work to do," Dixon said. "We've been talking about that. We have to get better. We know that. This was disappointing. We recognized going in that we have to be a better team, especially defensively. We always get better as the year goes on.”

That’s the kind of statement that drives bettors crazy. You’d like to think the Panthers come out and buckle down with a huge blowout Tuesday, but we aren’t betting on it.

La Salle already stunned Villanova and won’t lay down against Pitt.

Tennessee State Tigers at North Carolina Tar Heels (-27.5)

The Tar Heels received 62 of a possible 65 No. 1 overall votes in this week’s AP poll but coach Roy Williams isn’t satisfied.

UNC is coming off a 101-75 victory over Mississippi Valley State that saw the Heels struggle from downtown (5 of 19) and looked out of sync at times.

“Well obviously you're pleased with the 'W', but you'd like to shoot the ball better,” UNC coach Roy Williams told reporters. “You'd like to make some of the open shots you have from 3 more than we did and you'd like to make more free throws.”

On the bright side, UNC did have six players score in double figures and dominated the glass, outrebounding the Delta Devils 62-39. You have to love UNC’s depth when they look to the bench with a big lead down the stretch.
