Monday’s betting tips: Crosby returns for Penguins

    Who’s hot

NFL: Kansas City is 5-0 against the spread in its last five as an underdog.

NHL: Boston has won eight straight games.

NHL: Dallas is 8-3 in its last 11 home games.

NCAAB: Florida is 9-2-1 in its last 12 overall.

NCAAB: The under is 7-1 in Georgetown’s last eight.

    Who’s not

NFL: New England is 3-15 against the spread in its last 18 as a favorite of 10.5 or more points

NHL: The New York Islanders are 6-21 in their last 27 meetings with Pittsburgh.

NHL: Carolina is 1-7 against the spread in its last eight overall.

NCAAB: Missouri is 1-6-1 against the spread in its last eight.

NCAAB: Duke is 1-5 against the spread in its last six overall.

    Key stat

75-40 - New England has outscored its opposition 75-40 in its two primetime games this season – straight up and against the spread wins over New England and Miami.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Sherrod Wright, George Mason Patriots – Wright missed Saturday’s game with a wrist injury and is still listed as questionable for Monday’s date with Brown. Wright is averaging 14 points per game so far this season.

    Game of the day

Kansas City Chiefs at New England Patriots (15, 46.5)

    Notable quotable

"This is a business trip. We're there to do a job. If you want to take a vacation, do it on your own time – I'm not in a vacation mood." – Memphis coach Josh Pastner about playing in the Maui International. The Tigers square off against the Michigan Wolverines Monday.

    Notes and tips

It looks as though bettors aren’t afraid of the heavy chalk with the Kansas City Chiefs starting Tyler Palko at quarterback in New England. The Patriots currently sit as 15-point favorites and almost 75 percent of *********** Consensus bettors are backing the home team. The Pats are just 1-3 against the number in their last four.

Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby will make his long-awaited return to the ice for Monday's game against the Atlantic Division rival New York Islanders. The team announced the decision on its website Sunday. The 2007 NHL MVP has been sidelined since Jan. 5 due to a concussion. Crosby was cleared for contact in practice Oct. 13 and has traveled with the team, but has yet to play this season. The 24-year-old Nova Scotia native collected 32 goals and 34 assists in just 41 games last season.

Ice picks: Monday's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edmonton Oilers at Dallas Stars (-145, 5.5)

These young Oilers are giving their supporters 1980s flashbacks.

With Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle leading the charge, Edmonton hammered Chicago 9-2 Saturday night despite being outshot 36-34. Nugent Hopkins had five assists, Hall picked up a hat trick and Eberle scored and added three helpers.

“It definitely gives us confidence,” Hall told reporters. “It's great we won all three periods. It's easy to let off the gas pedal, but we didn't.”

That’s a major step in the right direction for a young club that has predictably struggled with consistency. They had dropped five straight, so they were in desperate need of a win.

This is a tough matchup against a solid Stars team that has dropped five in a row as well, but we’ll take a shot with the Oilers.

        Pick: Oilers

Phoenix Coyotes at Washington Capitals (-145, 5.5)

You know things are going well for the Coyotes when Paul Bissonnette is finding the back of the net.

The NHL’s undisputed Twitter king and one of its most feared heavyweights isn’t exactly known for his scoring prowess, but with more than 50 family members and friends in the stands Saturday, he buried his first of the season in a 4-2 win over Buffalo.

“It’s probably blowing up big time,” Bissonnette told reporters of his Twitter account after potting his fifth career goal. “I haven’t checked it yet. These are nights where people like to congratulate, because most of the time I’m getting flak for being such a pug.”

While Phoenix is cruising with three wins in its first four games on this road trip, Alex Ovechkin and the Caps are taking a lot of heat after getting pounded 7-1 by Toronto. You know coach Bruce Boudreau is steamed and there is some talk that Alex Semin may be a healthy scratch for this one.

        Pick: Over

Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          HOT TEAM: Minnesota Wild

They still play tight defense, they can still slow it down with the best of them, and they still have solid goaltending, all staples of the original Wild under coach Jacques Lemaire.

But this version has some serious star power, and can score a little bit too. Under new coach Mike Yeo, the Wild have won eight of their last 10 games, and will take a four-game winning streak into Wednesday’s tilt versus Nashville.

The numbers aren’t great from the high-priced players, but when you win, and fill seats, that’s really all that matters, and both have been the case in Minnesota. Dany Heatley has five goals and 12 points, Devin Setoguchi has six and 10, and Mikko Koivu finally broke out on Saturday with two goals vs. St. Louis, and now has 10 points on the season.

It all adds up to a deep set of forwards in the Western Conference, and when you have a decent tandem in net -- like the Wild do in Niklas Backstrom (7-4-2, 1.97 goals-against average) and Josh Harding (5-1-1, 1.79) -- you’re going to win your fair share of games.

And keep Minnesota on your radar this week, as they open a four-game homestand, after three days off. Starting Wednesday, they will play the Predators, Oilers, Flames and Lightning in a six-day span, but all of them will be in St. Paul.

          COLD TEAM: New York Islanders

There was definitely some preseason buzz around the Islanders headed into what appeared to be a season of promise. Their young goal scorers up front -- John Tavares, Michael Grabner, and Matt Moulson -- were coming off breakout seasons, and workhorse defenseman Mark Streit was healthy again after missing last year.

Indeed, it looked like a postseason berth might be in the cards.

Well, the best laid plans? Not so much. Streit is a minus-13, Kyle Okposo, who has yet to score a goal, has been a healthy scratch of late, and the Islanders have lost five of the last six games headed into Monday’s contest versus Pittsburgh.
New York is just 2-6 in November, and on Saturday, the Islanders were blown out on home ice, dropping a 6-0 decision to surging Boston.

          OVER PLAY: Chicago Blackhawks

A little weekend hiccup in Western Canada, versus Calgary and Edmonton on back to back nights, notwithstanding, Chicago has it rolling again this season, and appears very much like it intends to make some noise in the postseason yet again.

At the apex of the surge has been the names you’d expect on the scoring sheet. Jonathan Toews, Marian Hossa, Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp have lived up to billing with 10, nine, seven and seven goals, respectively.

And as a result, the Blackhawks have become a fairly reasonable over buy. In fact, Chicago will take a four-game over streak into Wednesday’s tilt versus San Jose, and in the last nine Blackhawks games, seven have been pushed past the total.

Of course, inconsistent goaltending helps the cause when it comes to overs, and Chicago, too, has delivered there, as well. Saturday against Edmonton was a perfect example. The Blackhawks had no answers, and nowhere to turn in net, as Ray Emery and Corey Crawford combined to make just 25 saves, while allowing nine goals. Ouch.

          UNDER PLAY: Dallas Stars

Goaltender Kari Lehtonen has calmed down a bit, but he still has some decent numbers. With an 11-4 mark, and a 2.44 goals-against average, he has still helped Dallas to the label of one of the better under plays out there.

His backup, Andrew Raycroft, hasn’t been great, though, posting an 0-4 mark with a 3.55 goals-against. But either way, Dallas has still managed consecutive unders and three in the last five games as the Stars prepare to take on Edmonton on Monday night.

Of course, it helps the cause when you can’t score, and that’s the funk Dallas is in right now. Consider the last five games. In four of them, the Stars scored two goals or less. And in two of them, they were shut out.

          SURVEYING THE SCHEDULE

** The Columbus Blue Jackets won a game Saturday. That’s No. 4 on the year, and believe it or not, they’re actually on a 2-2 run. Keep them in your sights this week, though, as they play three games in five days through the holiday, starting with Monday against Calgary.

** The Penguins, still without injured center Sidney Crosby, will be a busy bunch, too. On Monday, a home game against the Islanders begins a stretch of four games in six days through the holiday weekend, three of which are at home.

College funds: Monday's best NCAAB bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Michigan Wolverines at Memphis Tigers (-4)

It wasn’t pretty, but the Michigan Wolverines did take some positives away from a 59-55 squeaker of a win over Western Illinois.

"We needed a game like that, to kind of wake us up a little bit," Jordan Morgan told reporters. "Not just wake us up -- get used to playing in those situations where we've got to knock down free throws late, and we've got to get key stops and key baskets. We needed to feel that pressure."

They need to get a lot better in a lot of different aspects of the game if they’re going to hang around with Memphis at the Maui Invitational. Will Barton, Wesley Witherspoon and Joe Jackson all cracked the 20-point plateau in Memphis’ 97-81 beatdown of Belmont as a 3-point favorite to open the season.

We haven’t seen much of Memphis yet, but it’s not hard to see what a tough team this is going to be. The Tigers’ length and athleticism could be tough for Michigan to match.

            Pick: Memphis

Georgetown Hoyas at Kansas Jayhawks (-5)

Kansas coach Bill Self has no illusions about his club at this point in the season. The Jayhawks have potential, but they were in over their heads in a 75-65 loss against Kansas last week as 6.5-point underdogs.

"If you look at our team individually, we don't jump off the paper at you at all," Self told reporters. "That doesn't mean we don't have good players. We do, but not like we have from the marquee standpoint in the past. You have to become one, and we're not one yet."

The Hoyas have a way to go as well, though you have to like the quick start they’re off to. Hollis Thompson and Jason Clark look poised in the offense and Georgetown’s crop of freshmen appear to be ready for a big workload this season.

The Hoyas covered easily as 19-point favorites in a 86-45 rout of UNC Greensboro but obviously have a much stiffer test ahead of them here.

            Pick: Jayhawks

                Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Six NFL head coaches who got fired after short tenures; all six had better records than the 10-31 mark the Rams have under their current coach

-- Eric Mangini was 23-26 in three years with the Jets; 10-22 in couple of years in Cleveland- he got fired in both places.

-- Redskins fired Steve Spurrier and Jim Zorn, both after two seasons with a 12-20 record. 12-20 is a lot better than 10-31.

-- Rams fired Rich Brooks after he went 13-19 in 1995-96; he was a good coach, too. Imaginative. Wound up getting to the Super Bowl with Atlanta as defensive coordinator, then coached the Kentucky Wildcats.

-- Oakland fired Bill Callahan after he went 17-18 in two years; he got canned a year after winning the AFC Championship.

-- Gunther Cunningham went 16-16 coaching the Chiefs in 1999-2000, but he got fired. How do you fire a guy with a .500 record?

-- Josh McDaniels went 11-17 in 2009-10 coaching the Broncos, but he started out 6-0. Unfortunately, the Rams hired him as a coordinator, and he's been a disaster. Thats 7-25 for McDaniels in his last 32 NFL games. When the Rams fire their head coach, McDaniels should go with him.

                ********************

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday.........

                13) Bears won their fifth game in row; Chargers lost their fifth straight tilt, but Chicago lost Jay Cutler to a broken right thumb; all you fantasy guys, go get Caleb Hanie. No one coaches up backup QBs like Mike Martz..

                12) 49ers had five more takeaways Sunday, are now +17 in turnovers this season; they've won/covered their last eight games and could clinch NFC West title next weekend, mainly because the other three teams stink. But give San Francisco credit; they're doing all the little things right.

                11) Carolina led 24-7 at Ford Field with 3:00 left before halftime, wound up getting beat 49-35 by the Lions, who scored TDs on all six drives in the Carolina red zone. Panthers are lot more fun to watch this year, but 2-8 is still not good. Not good at all.

                10) Green Bay is 10-0; their next two games are Detroit, at the Giants, as seaon begins to wind down. After that, Pack has visits from Oakland, the Bears and a rematch with Detroit, and a visit to Kansas City. Next couple weeks are their two toughest tests left.

                9) There was a streak alive going into this weekend where a Miami alumni had scored an NFL TD for 149 straight regular season weeks; Winslow had a touchdown nullified by a penalty for the Bucs. Not sure if a Hurricane alumnus scored or not this weekend. Just under nine years; thats really an impressive stat that espn.com came up with.

                8) How about the Raiders and Carson Palmer? 162 rushing yards in their 27-21 win; Raiders overcame the standard 12 penalties for 117 yards, and are in first place in AFC West. Whomever made the Palmer trade should be NFL Executive of the Year. .

                7) Favorites are 5-6-2 so far this week; home teams were 7-4-2. Over was 6-7. NFC won two of three games against the AFC. There were 66 TDs scored the offense this week; 26 of the 66 came on drives of less than 50 yards. Turnovers/kicking game/3rd downs give teams short fields to work on, which seems the only way teams score TDs nowadays. .

                6) For instance, Seattle scored three TDs in St Louis Sunday; they came on drives of 40-25-21 yards, as the inept Ram offense couldn't move the ball. Seahawks started nine drives on their side of the 50, and scored 3 points. More games are lost than won; the Rams lost to Seattle because they can't block the other team. Simple as that.

                5) So far, Week 11 has seen the 2nd-best red zone offense of any week this season, with teams scoring 4.94 yards/red zone drive. Last week was the worst week this season for red zone production.

                4) Miami was 0-7, but hasn't allowed a TD in their last three games and are now 3-7 after hammering the slumping Bills 35-8. You look at those close games the Dolphins lost (by 3-1-3 points) and they could easily be 6-4.

                3) Giants haven't played Dallas yet, which means they play twice in the last five weeks of the season, which will decide the NFC East title.

                2) DeSean Jackson negated a 60-yard completion by getting a taunting flag thrown on him in front of the Giants' bench; a grievous error that will not go over well with Andy Reid, whenever he decides to implement discipline on his star receiver. An amazingly selfish play that cost his team in a close game. Eagles have a problem with Jackson right now.

                1) Should've played the over in Cincinnati-Baltimore as soon as I heard that Ray Lewis was out; Bengals gained 483 yards but turned ball over three times. Baltimore scored TDs on both drives that started in Bengals' territory, drives of 2-38 yards. Short drives like that win games.
