Sunday’s betting tips: Scoring drought in Boys vs. Skins

    Who’s hot

NFL: The Bears are 4-0 ATS in their last four overall and the over is 8-2 in their last 10 home games.

NFL: The Raiders are 5-0 ATS in their last five road games.

NFL: The 49ers are 9-1-1 ATS in their last 11 overall and 6-0-1 ATS in their last seven home games.

NHL: The Sharks are 5-1 in their last six road games.

NCAAB: St. Joseph’s is 6-1 ATS in its last seven overall.

CFL: British Columbia is 8-2 ATS in its last 10 overall.

    Who’s not

NFL: The Browns are 1-8-2 ATS in their last 11 home games.

NFL: The Panthers are 1-5 ATS in their last six road games.

NFL: The Redskins are 0-5 ATS in their last five overall.

NHL: The Ducks are 2-12 in their last 14 overall and 1-5 in their last six home games.

NCAAB: Western Kentucky is 0-5 ATS in its last five overall and the over is 0-5 in the team’s last five overall.

CFL: The over is 1-6 in Hamilton’s last seven overall and 0-4 in Winnipeg’s last four playoff games.

    Key stat

5-1 – The under in the last six meetings between NFC East rivals Dallas and Washington. These two simply can’t score against each other. Aside from one aberration last season, no more than 34 total points have been scored in any of the last six encounters. A combined 50 points were scored in the 2009 season tilts plus the first matchup of the 2010 campaign.

The under is 4-1 in the Cowboys’ last five overall and 7-1 in the Redskins’ last eight overall.

    Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

Insult to injury. Injury to insult. It might as well be both for the Phildaelphia Eagles, who appear to be going from bad to worse. They will be without both Michael Vick (ribs) and Jeremy Maclin (shoulder) for Sunday night’s NFC East battle against the Giants. The visiting Eagles opened as three-point underdogs and the spread, not surprisingly, has climbed to five.

    Biggest games on the slate

Cincinnati Bengals at Baltimore Ravens (-7, 40.5)

Philadelphia Eagles at New York Giants (-4.5, 45.5)

    Notable quotable

“I certainly still believe that we can be a playoff team. I would hope that everyone in this locker room thinks we’re going to be a playoff team. We sat at 5-5 in 2007. We went to Jacksonville at 5-4, got beat, came home and didn’t lose another game until January 11th in New England or whenever it was. We’ve done it before but like I said we gotta get that first one. We gotta see what it feels like again to go out there as a team and put together a game and win.” – San Diego Chargers’ quarterback Philip Rivers. The Bolts have lost four in a row heading into Sunday’s game at Chicago, where the visitors are 3.5-point underdogs.

    Tips and notes

Georgia Tech’s first game against real competition under new men’s basketball coach Brian Gregory resulted in a 13-point loss to St. Joseph’s at the Charleston Classic on Thursday. Glen Rice Jr., however, was suspended for the first three games of the season and he returned on Friday. The result was a much better performance from the Jackets in a 73-60 win over VCU. “He gives us more depth on the perimeter and we get more guys who can make plays for each other,” Gregory said of Rice, who scored a game-high 19 points on seven of 11 shooting.

NASCAR’s Sprint Cup all comes down to Carl Edwards vs. Tony Stewart on Sunday at Homestead’s Ford 400. Edwards leads Stewart by a mere three points heading into the final race of the season. Stewart is favored at +400 to win the race ahead of Edwards, second at +450. Edwards, though, is -140 to hang on and win the title with Stewart going off at +120. Stewart has two wins, three Top 5 finishes, and six Top 10 finishes with an average finish of 12.4 at homestead. Edwards has two wins, four Top 5 finishes, and six Top 10 finishes with an average finish of 5.7 at the track.

Houston cannot be counted out against Los Angeles in Sunday’s MLS championship game, because the Dynamo have won five in a row and have not lost since September 10, a span of nine games. They also beat L.A. 3-1 on October 23. However, it does not look great for Houston. The team won only two road games during the regular season and Los Angeles has the good fortune of playing this one at home. The Galaxy are undefeated in their own stadium this year and they boast by far the league’s best record at 22-5-10. The Dynamo will be without star midfielder Brad Davis (quad), who was injured in the Eastern Conference final.

      Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Six most popular picks and six least popular picks in Hilton handicapping contest, which has 517 contestants, all of whom who pick five NFL games a week against the spread. They put up $1,500 each, so these are serious handicappers........

      6) Dallas Cowboys 119
      5) Cincinnati Bengals 120
      4) Minnesota Vikings 121
      3) St Louis Rams 134
      2) Buffalo Bills 147
      1) Chicago Bears 188 27) New Jersey Jets 64
      28) Tampa Bay Buccaneers 61
      29) Tennessee Titans 54
      30) Seattle Seahawks 52
      31) Denver Broncos 35
      32) Kansas City Chiefs 24

      ******************

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college sports Saturday.......

      13) If you went to bed before 11pm Saturday, you missed a lot; ton of drama in the late games, as the college football season took a dramatic turn with a series of wild finishes. Put it this way; if you root for a top 10 team and that team isn't in the SEC, you probably had a bad day.

      12) USC led 38-14 at Oregon with 3:28 left in third quarter, but Ducks missed a FG in the last 0:10 that would've tied the game. In the last five weeks, Trojans won as underdogs of 9-13 points, and took Stanford to OT as an 8-point underdog. USC is a top 10 team that can't go bowling.

      11) Florida State missed a FG at home in the last minute that would have broken Virginia's heart; Cavaliers hung on for 14-13 win, in game marked by lot of confusion with the officials in the game's last minute. Thats the good news for Virginia; bad news is that coach London will probably be on the short list to replace Joe Paterno at Penn State. He's a good coach.

      10) When was last time Texas lost in basketball and football on same day? Kansas State had only 8 first downs in Austin, was outgained 310-121, but somehow upset the 6-4 Longhorns 17-13, a losss that has to put Mack Brown back on the Texas hot seat. .

      9) Poor Dennis Erickson had his heart ripped out for third week in a row, as Arizona State lost 31-27 to rival Arizona; game ended with ASU on the 9-yard line. Sun Devils are 6-5, probably the most disappointing team in the country. Erickson will be very glad to see November end.

      8) Tennessee almost never loses to Vanderbilt, but they were a home dog to the Commodores in a game they needed to stay alive for a bowl bid. It doesn't happen often, but Vols scored a defensive TD in OT on a 90-yard INT, giving Tennessee a 27-21 win. Vols have to beat Kentucky next week to finish 6-6 and go bowling. Music City Bowl?

      7) Underdogs are now 20-2 vs spread in WAC games they went 3-0 this weekend; Louisiana Tech has come out of nowhere to lead the WAC.

      6) Cincinnati Bearcats were a top 25 basketball team. Key word is were since the Bearcats lost at home to Presbyterian 56-54. The Blue Hose lost to Duke last week by 41 points.

      5) Georgia Southern had 302 rushing yards in a 24-14 loss at Alabama; not only are the Eagles not in the SEC, they're a I-AA team that completed one pass in seven tries Saturday. Betcha Nick Saban loved that stat.

      4) Speaking of I-AA teams, Florida trailed Furman 22-7; game was 40-32 in 4th quarter, before Gators scored couple of defensive TDs to put the game away 54-32. Paladins had 233 rushing yards. Florida is bowl-eligible, but playing terribly as the season winds down.

      3) You know your defense sucks (UTEP) when other team runs 60 plays in a game (Tulsa), and only seven of them come on 3rd down.

      2) If I had a Heisman vote, I would vote for Robert Griffin III of Baylor. Most Heisman voters probably don't know what color uniforms the Bears wear, so he ain't winning, but he might be the best player in America.

      1) Right now, UCLA is in line to play in the Pac-12 title game, but they still have to play USC; if Bruins lose that game, a 5-4 team in league play will compete for the league championship. Terrific.

Canadian Bacon: CFL Playoff Semifinals preview and picks
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HAMILTON TIGER CATS AT WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS (-3, 51)

The Blue Bombers finished first in the East ahead of the Alouettes, who were ousted from the playoffs last week by the Tiger Cats. But neither Winnipeg nor Hamilton had a strong regular-season finish, with both teams having lost seven of their last 10 games.

While the Blue Bombers have struggled on offense, the Tiger Cats defense has proven way too generous, including in a 52-44 OT win last Sunday in Montreal. The good news for the Bombers is that Buck Pierce will be back behind center, although he has thrown more interceptions than touchdown passes in his last seven games (12 to four).

Winnipeg has arguably the league’s best group of receivers in Terrence Edwards, Clarence Denmark and Corey Watson. The team’s rushing game is not quite the same without Fred Reid, but Chris Garrett has done pretty good job with 689 yards in six games for an average of 6.2 yards per carry.

Running the ball is not a problem for Hamilton and the resilient Avon Cobourne is also excellent in pass protection. Cobourne always proves at his best in the most important games and he proved it once again with 97 rushing yards against the Alouettes and a key touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The Tiger Cats will also benefit from the acquisition of receiver Terrence Jeffers-Harris on Friday, the day after he was let go by the Blue Bombers. The 23-year-old won’t be eligible for this game, but you can imagine he will be grilled by the Tiger Cats coaching staff for any information about Winnipeg’s playbook. Will it make some sort of difference? Our colleagues in Ontario certainly seem to think so, or at least wish it will.

With the return of Canadian CB Ryan Hinds, the Tiger Cats will be able to bring back into the lineup DE Stevie Baggs, who—because of the import/non-import ratio (which involves citizens and non-citizens of Canada; Baggs is not a citizen)—was left out against the Alouettes. The Bombers won their three regular-season games against Hamilton by a combined score of 87-60 and they have won five of the last six playoff showdowns between these two teams since 1988.

Winnipeg’s defense, led by Tim Burke, dominated in many statistical categories during the season and should be a difference-maker in this game.

        Pick: Winnipeg

        EDMONTON ESKIMOS AT B.C. LIONS (-6, 50)

The Lions had a terrible start to the season but have since been almost unbeatable, and now they are one win away of hosting the Grey Cup in front of their Vancouver fans. Wally Buono’s team had only one win in its first seven games only to go on an eight-game winning streak.

It has been the other way around for Edmonton, which boasted a perfect record before losing a few games in a row (the team has since bounced back down the stretch).

The Lions have won three of their four games against the Eskimos and have to be considered as heavy favorites in this Western final for many reasons. Travis Lulay must be considered one of the best quarterbacks in the CFL. His prime target, Geroy Simon, enjoyed his best campaign in three years with 1350 yards and eight touchdowns during the regular season.

B.C.’s defense is second best in the league, led up front by the likes of Keron Williams, Aaron Hunt, Brent Johnson and Khalif Mitchell. And let’s not forget that the front seven is anchored by MLB Solomon Elimimian, probably the best in the league at his position and a young athlete who may very well get an invitation from an NFL team next year.

Without Canadian RB Jerome Messam (knee), the Eskimos become a more predictable team on offense. Ricky Ray might still win the passing duel and once again gain more than 300 yards through the air against BC. Ray had the best QB rating in the league with a 99.3 mark during the regular season. He can count on two of the best receivers in the business with Fred Stamps and Adarius Bowman, who both caught for more than 1100 yards this year. And even if both are covered, Ray can rely on Jason Barnes.

But will that be enough? I doubt it.

        Pick: B.C.

Ice picks: Sunday's best NHL bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Maple Leafs at Carolina Hurricanes (-154, 5.5)

Someone will have to find the back of the net at some point in this one, either in regulation, overtime, or during a shootout. Perhaps the latter is most likely based on the way Toronto and Carolina have fared of late.

The Hurricanes have dropped seven of their last eight contests mainly due to a significant power shortage. They are scoreless over their last two games and they have scored more than two goals only once in this dismal eight-game stretch (averaging 1.5 per). Carolina did not have to face Buffalo's Ryan Miller on Friday, but it still got shut out by backup Jhonas Enroth.

"In my situation, I'm not sure I can fully describe the frustration of not seeing one of those second-chance goals," said on-the-hot-seat head coach Paul Maurice after his squad missed a host of opportunities against the Sabres.

Frustration is mounting for Toronto, as well. Heading into Saturday night's date at Washington, the Maple Leafs have lost three in a row and have mustered only five goals in that span. They have gone six consecutive games without scoring more than two goals, while averaging 1.33 tallies in those six.

            Pick: Under

Ottawa Senators at Vancouver Canucks (-180,5.5)

Ottawa has to be the streakiest team in the NHL heading into Sunday's game at Vancouver.

They lost three in a row in mid October, won six straight to end the month, dropped five consecutive decisions to begin November, and have currently won three in a row. Ready for its fifth stop during a six-game road trip, Ottawa has scored 13 goals in its last three (wins over Toronto, Calgary, and Edmonton).

“Our role players have been very good for the last few games and know we are starting to get some goals out of them," said head coach Paul MacLean. "It really helps the team and takes a lot of the weight off the other guys.”

Vancouver has lost two of three going into this one. At least five goals have been scored in each of the team's last nine games.

Roberto Luongo should be minding the net on Sunday after getting an off day when the Canucks lost to Chicago 5-1 on Wednesday. Luongo, though, has been mediocre this season with a 2.97 GAA and .896 save percentage.

            Pick: Over

Washington Huskies at Saint Louis Billikens

Something will have to give when Washington and Saint Louis square off on Sunday afternoon. Combined, the Huskies (3-0, 2-1 ATS) and Billikens (2-0, 2-0 ATS) are 5-0 and 4-1 ATS.

St. Louis is coming off a disappointing 12-19 (6-10 Atlantic 10) campaign, but last season was rocked before it started by a sexual assault investigation. Charges were dropped, but it left both Kwamain Mitchell and Willie Reed out for the year.

Mitchell is back and the Billikens are off to a good start. The star point guard shot just three of 13 in a 71-37 win over Tennessee State on November 11, but he dished out eight assists. Mitchell had nine points, four assists, and a team-high seven rebounds in Tuesday’s 61-42 blowout of Southern Illinois.

“He adds a whole new element to our game,” teammate Cody Ellis said of Mitchell. “He draws a lot of respect from everyone we play. He is definitely a big asset to us.”

Washington will be playing its first road game of the season. The Huskies endured a big scare against Florida Atlantic last Sunday when it led by four points with just over a minute to play before prevailing 77-71.

Shooting guard C.J. Wilcox is averaging 19.3 points and making 52.9 percent of his field goals through three games.

                    Pick: Saint Louis

                    Iowa Hawkeyes at Creighton Bluejays

Another all-undefeated matchup on Sunday pits a pair of 3-0, 1-0 ATS teams in Iowa and Creighton.

They already have one common opponent in the form of none other than the Chicago State Cougars. Iowa dominated 96-53 at home last Friday and Creighton, also with home-court advantage, prevailed by a similar 95-61 decision last Sunday.

The Bluejays already have a pretty decent road win having defeated UAB 70-60, which preceded a pair of blowout home victories against inferior competition. Sophomore forward Doug McDermott poured in 27 points against the Blazers and is averaging 20.3 points per contest despite playing limited minutes in the two most recent outings.

It's a family affair at Creighton, where second-year head coach Greg McDermott is Doug's father. And Doug is certainly on the way to making his dad a very happy man this season thanks in part to plenty of offseason work.

“I think I’ve gotten a little bigger, and I tried to work on my ball-handling in the offseason,” Doug explained. “Last year I was more of a back-to-the-basket guy. I did a lot of work on facing up, and got better in that area.

“I think I get it, after playing a year in college, what I’m going to see night in and night out. We have a lot of returning pieces, so we should be really good.”

Iowa, which is also looking good, is playing its first road game of the year. The Hawkeyes are being led by guards Matt Gatens (16.3 ppg) and Eric May (15.3 ppg).

                    Pick: Creighton
