Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Jaromir Jagr, Philadelphia Flyers – Jagr did not make the trip to Winnipeg for Saturday’s game. He was forced out of Philly’s 2-1 win over Phoenix on Thursday with an undisclosed lower-body injury. Jagr played only three shifts before departing. Jagr has six goals and 17 points in his first season with the Flyers and his first NHL season after a three-year stint in Russia.

Notes and tips

The Ravens expect to be without All-Pro middle linebacker Ray Lewis for the next two games due to a toe injury he suffered last week at Seattle. Lewis, 36, has started 57 straight games and leads Baltimore with 68 tackles this season. Sunday, the Ravens are 7-point home favorites over AFC North rival Cincinnati. The upstart Bengals likely will be without star WR A.J. Green, who has a knee injury.

No. 9 Clemson, which has already clinched the ACC's Coastal Division, might not use electric freshman WR Sammy Watkins (shoulder) when the Tigers visit N.C. State as 7.5-point favorites. “He will dress and we will watch him in **** warmups and see how he is,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney told CBSSports.com. “It might be a situation where he's ready and we see how we are doing. If we can hold him, we'll hold him." Watkins has caught 68 balls for 1,034 yards and 10 TDs.

With Illinois leading the Big Ten in sacks (32), look for No. 13 Wisconsin to pound the ball with RB Montee Ball. The junior leads the conference in all-purpose yards (146.2), rushing yards (124.2) and scoring (16.4). Ball has scored 27 TDs, a new conference record. The visiting Badgers are favored by 14.5, with the total set at 50.5.

Washington Capitals at Toronto Maple Leafs (128, 5.5)

Similarity Central here at the Air Canada Centre. Teams that were red hot out of the box but have since cooled, square off with both hungry for a win that’s been at least a week in the making.

Troubled Toronto

There’s a still long way to go before you can call them flukes, but the Maple Leafs, once the talk of the league, have hit a dry spell. Thursday’s 4-1 loss to Nashville was their third in a row and fifth in the last six games.

Toronto has only seven points this month and hasn’t scored more than three goals in a game since Nov. 3. That’s not going to get it done.

Tough to blame anything on forward Phil Kessel, but even he’s slowed down a bit. Going pointless against the Predators snapped a four-game point streak for the Maple Leafs’ leader.

Crashing Capitals

Anyone who remembers the HBO series with the Capitals last season as coach Bruce Boudreau cursed his way through tough times, knows this team is capable of horrific slumps in the Alex Ovechkin Era. But they usually find their way out of them, especially in the regular season.

Well, they’re in one again. Thursday’s 4-1 loss at Winnipeg was the Capitals’ third in a row and fourth in the last five games. They are now under .500 on the road (4-5), and have yet to win a game on this current trip.

Ovechkin was firing blanks versus the Jets, as he landed five shots in 18:12 of ice time, only to come up empty. Ovechkin has been up and down this season, as he takes seven goals, 14 points, and a minus-3 rating into Saturday’s tilt.

Declining Dion?

Toronto defenseman Dion Phaneuf is off to a good start with two goals and 12 points, but his recent shifts have been counterproductive.

Phaneuf was a minus-3 versus Nashville, is minus-5 over his last five games, and has been a plus player just once all month.

He’s still blocking shots, with 14 this month alone, but goals are finding the back of the Maple Leafs’ net when he’s on the ice and that’s not a good sign for Toronto moving forward.

History

This is the first meeting of the season. Washington has won four of the last five in the series, and three of those games ended in a shootout. The Capitals have produced four straight unders.

Chicago Blackhawks at Edmonton Oilers (112, 5.5)

Maybe we should call them the Chicago Back-hawks, because that’s exactly where they are: Back on everyone’s radar. This should be a delightful nightcap with plenty of skill and speed on both ends of that great Edmonton ice.

Leaving no doubts this year

Chicago appears intent on not waiting until the last week of the regular season to clinch a playoff berth, like it did last year. At this rate, Chicago may clinch a spot in February.

The Blackhawks, with 27 points before Friday’s game against Calgary, were atop the Central Division and the rest of the league on the strength of four consecutive wins. They had scored 21 goals during that stretch and started a hefty six-game road swing with an impressive 5-1 victory over Vancouver on Wednesday night.

Through Thursday, both Marian Hossa and Patrick Kane belonged to the 21-point club and they had posted eight and seven goals, respectively. If that keeps up, we may be looking at another long run in the Windy City.

Leaking a little Oil

Edmonton, a tremendous early-season surprise, has dropped off a bit. The Oilers have lost four straight and have five defeats overall in November.

Their defense and goaltending, impressive in October, has been a bit off this month, as Edmonton has allowed 20 goals during this skid.

Goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin still has impressive statistics -- a .937 save percentage and a 1.74 GAA. But he has lost his last three starts and doubt appears to have crept in.

Barker out

On Nov. 10, at Boston, Edmonton defenseman Cam Barker had the best game of his season. He fired six shots on net and had one block in a 6-3 loss.

Unfortunately for Barker, he won't be able to repeat that effort anytime soon.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound left-handed shot is scheduled to have ankle surgery and may miss three months. He has one goal and is a plus-3 this season.

History

Chicago has won the last three installments in this series, including a 6-3 home decision on Nov. 13. Three of the last four in this rivalry have gone under, and four of the last five Oilers’ games also have gone under.

Phoenix Coyotes at Buffalo Sabres (-148, 5.5)

Phoenix has mustered nine goals in its past four games, including one overtime game and another that went to the shootout. The under is 3-0-1 in that span.

But Coyotes goalie Mike Smith, who replaced Ilya Bryzgalov, has been impressive. He stopped 40 shots in a 2-1 loss at Philly on Thursday night.

''He gives us the chance to win every night and that's all you can ask from any goaltender,'' Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said.

This is a tough part of the schedule for the Sabres, who will be playing the fourth game of a 4-in-6 days situation. The under is 7-3 in Buffalo’s last 10 games in that circumstance.

The under is also 5-2-2 in the Coyotes’ last nine games playing on one day’s rest, and 11-4-2 in the last 17 Phoenix-Buffalo meetings.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Florida Panthers (-116, 5.5)

Dating to last season, the Pens have won five straight over the Panthers. Most recently Pittsburgh posted a 4-2 home win over Florida on Oct. 11.

The Pens enter this one angry after going 0 for 7 on the power play in Thursday’s 4-1 loss at Tampa Bay. That included a stretch of one minute, 39 seconds with a 5-on-3 advantage. The Lightning, meanwhile, went 2 for 6 on the power play.

"Our special teams have to be even or better to win games," Penguins center Jordan Staal said. "Our [penalty-killing] faltered a bit. It just wasn't a pretty special-teams battle."

When the Pens lose by three or more goals, they usually respond. They're 39-15 in their last 54 games in that situation.

Florida had its four-game road winning streak snapped in a 4-1 loss at St. Louis on Thursday. The Panthers are just 2-2-0-3 at home this season, and 2-10 in their last 12 games against Atlantic Division foes.

James Madison Dukes at La Salle Explorers (-2.5, 148)

James Madison returned four starters from last year’s 21-12 squad that appeared in the CBI post-season tourney.

The Dukes, picked to finish fifth in the Colonial Athletic Association, opened with an 82-73 win over Canisius. Senior guard Humpty Hitchens poured in a career-high 26 points and junior guard A.J. Davis, a transfer from Wyoming, scored 23.

Senior forward Julius Wells, who had 13 points and five boards, is the Colonial’s career points leader. Even with guard Devon Moore (11.4 ppg, 4.2 apg last season) sidelined until mid-December, scoring is not a problem.

The Explorers (1-1) are coming off a heartbreaking overtime loss to Philadelphia rival Villanova. They’re picked to finish 13th in the 14-team Atlantic 10.

The road team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.

Charleston Cougars at Clemson Tigers (-11.5, 131)

Clemson, picked to finish seventh in the ACC, held its first two opponents to 31 percent shooting or less with relentless defense. The Tigers (2-0) won by an average of 22 points.

Senior guard Andre Young is averaging 13.5 points and 3.0 assists, leading a team that starts four upper-classmen. Young has drained at least one 3-pointer in 36 of the last 37 games.

Coach Brad Brownell has done a great job in just over a season at the helm, guiding the Tigers to a 24-12 mark.

Charleston, picked to finish second in the SoCon’s South Division, is gunning for its first 3-0 start since 2002-03. But coach Bobby Cremins’ squad was routed 94-55 in their last visit to Littlejohn Coliseum in 2009. Clemson won this matchup at home, 66-59, last season.

The Cougars start two sophomores and a freshman. One of the sophomores, Jordan Scott, nailed 5 of 7 three-pointers in Charleston’s 72-57 win over Morehead State.

But this team is too inexperienced to hang with the Tigers on the road.

13) If there’s no NBA season, and that could very well happen at this point, what happens to the Olympic basketball team for next summer in London? Worse comes to worse, guess they could put together a Duke alumni team to go play for Coach K, the Great Educator. Might be the first time much of America roots against its own team.

12) Why is Coach K the Olympic coach anyway? Because he went to West Point? Greg Popovich went to the Air Force Academy, why can’t he be the coach? He’s won four NBA titles. Phil Jackson? Rick Pitino? Pat Riley? Just don’t tell me they’re not as good a coach as Coach Krzyzewski, because they are.

11) They’ve had 297 straight sellouts at Lambeau Field, which is 35 or 36 years worth of games, when you add in playoff games.

10) Minnesota Vikings have now lost nine straight division games.

9) Highest-ranked college football team in Texas? The 10th-ranked Houston Cougars of Conference USA.

8) ESPN Full court is way better if you have DirecTV instead of digital cable. More channels, more options, especially if you have SportsPak, which is only an extra $13 or so a month.

7) Houston Astros will be an AL West team, starting in 2013; guess its one of the conditions of MLB approving sale of the team to Jim Crane. They cut $70M off price of the franchise so the Astros would move.

6) Watching the Northern Iowa-St Mary’s game some night earlier this week (the hoop marathon screws up my sense of time), was surprised to hear that both head coaches are working under 10-year contracts. That’s good business; you have a good coach, you lock him up. Really surprised no big school ever made a big play for St Mary’s’ Randy Bennett; he’s done wonders with the Gaels.

5) Hawai’i coach Gib Arnold writes each one of his players a note before every game, describing what he needs from that player that day. Interesting approach. Hawai’i is pretty good; if they make the NCAAs soon, someone else will imitate Arnold and start writing those notes.

4) Hard to believe LaceDarius Dunn is finally gone from Baylor; I watched him play so much, saw him hoist up so many bombs from the arc, felt like I should’ve attended his graduation ceremony. Would be a good story if Baylor made the Final Four this year, with both of Coach Drew’s parents trying to beat cancer.

3) Bud Selig’s given name is Allan Huber Selig. He used to be a used car salesman, now he makes $14M a year. Just thought you’d like to know.

2) Nothing wrong with Heinz Field hosting high school and college games, but NFL stadiums that also host games at lower levels of football should have to have Field Turf. Just makes sense, having a dependable playing surface. NFL made the Patriots improve their playing surface.

Louisville beat Butler 88-73 in LY's season opener; five of Cardinals' 11 returning players are already hurt- they won first two games by 35-11 points against stiff teams. Butlerlost three starters from LY; they split first two games, losing in OT at Evansville, then beating Chattanooga by 11, not impressive. Big East favorites are 5-10 against the spread.

Southern Illinois is off to terrible start, losing to a D-II team, then losing at home to Saint Louis by 19- they scored only 52.5 ppg in those games. Salukis have three starters back from 13-19 team. Northeastern has first home games after winning in OT at Boston U and losing at UMass by 16. Huskies have four starters back from LY's 11-20 team (6-12 CAA).

LaSalle split its first two games, beating Lafayette by 26, losing by 7 in OT to Villanova (led by 5 at half); Explorers lost three starters after LYs 15-18 team, but seem to have better chemistry now. James Madison has four starters back from 21-12 team that went 10-8 in CAA- they beat Canisius by 9 in opener. A-14 favorites are 10-6, 4-3 at home.

George Mason has new coach and a suspended PG; they're 2-1, as two of three games went OT- their loss was to FIU, Sun Belt rival of FAU, today's opponent. FAU has four starters back from 21-11 team that was 13-3 in Sun Belt, but they're 1-3 this year, losing by 5-6-6 points, with only win by 7 against Georgia State on a neutral court.

New Mexico State won its first two games, by 14 at Northern Colorado, 9 at New Mexico; Aggies forced 20 Lobo turnovers, got to line 38 times at Pit, but they've lost six of last eight games vs UTEP, including three of last four played here. First road game for Miner squad that lost 73-64 in opener to UTSA, then beat Cal-Riverside 52-41 in last game.

Hawai'i is getting better; they beat Cal-Northridge 86-67 in ESPN opener late Monday night; Warriors have three starters back from 19-13 team that went 8-8 in WAC. Gonzaga scored 83 ppg in a pair of 8-point wins over E Washington/Washington State; Bulldogs have three starters back from LY's 25-10 team (11-3 in WCC). This game in is Vancouver.

Harvard won by 9 at Holy Cross, which beat Boston College by 22 on Friday; Crimson is expected to win Ivy, interesting test vs LMU squad that won at UCLA, but then loss to Middle Tennessee by 7. Lions are picked to finish 6th in WCC; they played first two games without their leading returning starter, Viney. WCC underdogs are 4-2 vs spread. .

Visiting team won last five San Jose St-Santa Clara games; Spartans won last two visits here, 62-59/74-68. San Jose's last two games were decided by total of 3 points- they're 1-2, with only win over UC-Irvine. Santa Clara lost its only D-I game by 33 at UCSB. WCC home faves are 2-5 vs spread this year. SC's Foster might by POY in WCC this year.

Sixth game in nine days for San Diego State which won at buzzer in late Thursday night game over USC; Aztecs beat Long Beach by 16 in LY's opener, but they lost four double figure scorers off that team. 49ers won at Pitt Wednesday, shooting 59% from floor- they've got four starters back from LY's 22-12 team that has over 300 career starts.

Old Dominion lost its first gane by 17 to Northern Iowa, then beat two stiffs by 8-10 points; Monarchs lost three starters from LY's 27-7 team that was 14-4 in CAA. South Florida won its first three games, allowing 56 ppg in wins over Vermont (61-59)/Marist (81-67) and a D-II team; Bulls have three starters back from 10-23 team (3-15 in Big East).

NC State is off to 3-0 start in Gottfried era, scoring 87.5 ppg in winning first two games, then hanging on for 60-58 win over Princeton team that plays little bit like Vanderbilt, except with lesser players. Vandy lost at home by 13 to Cleveland State, won its other two games by 14-12; they have four starters now from LY's 23-11, but miss Ezili (suspended).

First road game for Texas squad that scored 90 ppg in winning its first two games, by 36 over Boston U, 10 over Rhode Island. Longhorns have all new starters this year, but they've always got solid talent. Oregon State is playing more man defense; they scored 87 ppg in winning first three games while playing faster. Long trip east for them to NJ.

Utah is off to shaky start, beating cupcake by 3, then losing at Boise by 21 points; Utes have new coach, three new starters after LY's team was 13-18, 6-10 in MWC. Montana State lost its opener at Arizona State by 6, after tailing by 12 at half; Bobcats lost four starters from 13-18 team that was 7-9 in Big Sky. Big Sky road dogs are 7-4 (single digits, 1-3).
