Wednesday’s betting tips: Ole Miss suspends starting QB, RB

    Who’s hot

NCAAF: Miami (Ohio) is 6-2 against the spread in its last eight home games.

NCAAF: Ohio is 5-2 against the spread in its last seven games as a road favorite.

NCAAB: The over is 8-3 in Wisconsin’s last 11 overall.

NHL: Carolina is 11-4 in its last 15 games in Montreal.

    Who’s not

NCAAF: The under is 1-5 in Western Michigan’s last six.

NCAAF: Bowling Green is 10-23 against the spread in its last 33 home games.

NCAAB: Pitt is 1-4 against the spread in its last five non-conference games.

NHL: Chicago is 3-7 in its last 10 meetings with Vancouver.

    Key stat

-110- Oddsmakers currently have the United States set as -110 favorites against the International side in the President’s Cup, which tees off Thursday at Royal Melbourne.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Roberto Luongo, Vancouver Canucks – Luongo will miss Wednesday night's game against the Chicago Blackhawks with an upper body injury. Luongo is being listed as day to day. Backup Cory Schneider will draw the start in net against the Blackhawks. Luongo is 7-5 with a 2.97 goals-against average and .896 save percentage this season for the reigning Western Conference champions.

    Game of the day

Ohio Bobcats at Bowling Green Falcons (6.5, 57.5)

    Notable quotable

"We can't fall asleep back there in the secondary. It can get boring, especially when a team just keeps running the ball, series after series, play after play." – New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis on facing Denver’s run-heavy offense with Tim Tebow at quarterback.

    Notes and tips

Mississippi coach Houston Nutt has suspended starting quarterback Randall Mackey and top rusher Jeff Scott for Saturday's game against No. 1 LSU for team rules violations. Nutt did not elaborate on the reason for the suspensions, which he said could spill over to the season finale against Mississippi State. It was announced in early November that Nutt would not return as coach next season after not failing to meet expectations. Mackey has thrown for 1,112 yards and seven touchdowns this season. Backup Zack Stoudt is expected to get the start against the Tigers. Scott has 529 rushing yards and six scores on the campaign. Ole Miss is pegged as a 29.5-point underdog for this week's game.

The Chicago Blackhawks begin their annual road trip with the circus coming to the United Center. They’ll kick off a six-game trek Wednesday in Vancouver and won’t be back home again until Nov. 29.

UCLA has suspended forward Reeves Nelson indefinitely for conduct unbecoming of a member of the team. Coach Ben Howland said Nelson would not play in Tuesday night's game against Middle Tennessee State. Nelson's status will be re-evaluated after he meets with Howland later this week. Nelson, a junior, had 13 points and eight rebounds in the then No. 17-ranked Bruins' 69-58 season-opening loss to Loyola Marymount last week.

      Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Marlins offered Jose Reyes $90M for six years. Interesting to see if he grabs it, or goes for the nine-figure offer.

-- Ben Roethlisberger has a fracture in his right thumb, will still play. If I remember right, Brett Favre played with this injury; said it affected the touch he could put on certain passes, but he still played.

-- According to ESPN, 34.3% of baseball fans only watch their favorite team play. 15.2% of NFL fans only watch their favorite team.

-- Joe Paterno's pension from Penn State? $554,000 a year.

-- Tennessee's football team has been outscored 87-0 in second half of their last five games. Apparently, they lack depth.

-- Ole Miss suspended its starting QB and best RB for this week's game against LSU, which will make our weekly Les Miles quote a little less colorful. The next Ole Miss coach has quite a mess to clean up.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Random thoughts from pair of bleary eyes

      13) UCLA has already lost to LMU and Middle Tennessee State, so the Ben Howland/hot seat watch is officially underway. Howland suspended one of his best players, Reeves Nelson- its probably already seemed like a long season for him. Bruins just don't seem to enjoy playing.

      12) Rough night for the SEC, with LSU losing at Coastal Carolina, South Carolina losing at Elon and Florida losing at Ohio State, Kentucky's win over Kansas helps, but not a whole lot.

      11) College basketball in Philadelphia is tough; Penn took Temple to OT Monday night, LaSalle took Villanova last night. Both favorites won, but games like that help both teams. Make you tougher for March.

      10) Belmont lost by a point at Duke last week, but got squashed by the lightning-quick Memphis Tigers, who could breeze thru Conference USA again this season. We won't see Belmont again until early March, but if they can avoid a team with great athletes, they'll upset someone.

      9) Wow, is West Virginia young; they've got only three players who were on last year's team. Seven freshmen, so they're going to have hard time in games against older teams. Teams like Kent State, who won by 10 in an early morning upset in Morgantown. .

      8) Until the late 70's, NC State-Wake Forest-North Carolina-Duke had a season opening tournament every year, called Big 4 tournament. Made a lot of money for everyone. Thats why NC State opened with UNC/Duke in 1976. Not sure why Michigan State did it this year. Its overscheduling.

      7) Was impressed by Washington State in their 89-81 loss at Gonzaga about 24 hours ago. Coogs showed a lot of heart; too bad they lost their really talented players, who left school early.

      6) Iowa State got upset at Drake; its going to take Cyclones a while to get some chemistry, but they're too talented to lose to Drake. They've got a bunch of transfers from all over. Chemistry isn't instant or easy.

      5) Weber State looks like the class of the Big Sky- they beat Utah State by 10 Tuesday night, a rare win over their in-state rivals.

      4) Pepperdine beat Arizona State 66-60; rumors have Herb Sendek not so happy in Tempe. At this rate, the feeling's going to be mutual.

      3) St Mary's looked terrific in pummeling Northern Iowa 57-41; have to see some more of the Gaels, but they're going to give Gonzaga a run for the money to win the WCC. .

      2) Mike Krzyzewski went 38-47 in his first three years at Duke; he was making $48,000 a year. In today's world, he wouldn't have seen Year #4, but things have worked out pretty well for him. He even got a few raises.

      1) The whole Coach K/903rd win thing would've been better had we not been subjected to so much of Robert M Knight. Can't figure out ESPN; Knight bullied the media for years. He offers no great insight on TV, other than it is smart to fake your shot. He says that 100 times a game. Why is he given the prime assignments? They have several better analysts.

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Blackhawks at Vancouver Canucks (-130, 5.5)

There’s no love lost between these clubs and both are rounding into form ahead of Wednesday’s date.

They combined for 56 minutes in penalties in Vancouver’s 6-2 win at the United Center on Nov. 6 and both teams are clicking offensively right now. The Canucks are averaging four goals per game over their last four while Chicago has tallied 16 in its last three.

"When you play with confidence you don't really think about what you're doing, you maybe get back to the game that you played when you were younger," Canucks defenseman Aaron Rome told reporters after scoring three goals in four games. "I played in offensive situations at all levels, so I knew that I kind of had it in me, but maybe not to this extent."

Chicago may be without standout defenseman Brent Seabrook after he crashed into the end boards on Sunday and the Blackhawks will come out firing to begin their annual road trip with the circus coming to the United Center.

        Pick: Over

Anaheim Ducks at Los Angeles Kings (-165, 5)

This isn’t exactly the way either the Kings or Ducks expected to start the season, but a home-and-home between the two clubs should at least light a spark.

Los Angeles has won just three of its last 10 while Anaheim has just two wins in its last 12. So while there’s still lots of time to turn things around, frustrations are beginning to set in.

"We have to put some wins together now. It starts on Wednesday," Anaheim defenseman Cam Fowler told reporters. "We should be going into those two games like Stanley Cup Game 7. It's a big rivalry. Playing those guys back to back, home and home, it could get us going in the right way or it could set us back again. We have to be ready."

Fowler wasn’t the only one to note the urgency of this matchup. Ryan Getzlaf, who has only nine points this season, defended Anaheim’s coaching staff while challenging the rest of the team to step up.

This is going to be a good one.

        Pick: Anaheim

Princeton lost by 16 to Wagner in its opener, turning ball over 28 times- if they're turning it over 28 teams against an NEC team, they're in big trouble here.

Long Beach State is picked to win Big West again; they won league LY by four games, then got beat in conference tourney, so games like this are designed to toughen them up for March. 49ers have four starters back from 22-12 team that lost by less than 10 points LY to both St Mary's and North Carolina. Boise State lost 86-84 at Utah LY; Broncos lost 55 ppg from LY's 22-13 team that went 10-6 in WAC but is now in MWC, a tougher conference, so they're in rebuilding mode, with 9 of 14 players freshmen or sophs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Long Beach State 49ers at Pitt Panthers (-13.5)

Over the past few years, the Pitt Panthers have been a tough team to get a read on. This season it could be even worse.

With 10 underclassmen trying to come together on the roster, Jamie Dixon’s squad may take a while to find itself. That much was evident in Pitt’s first two games of the year. The Panthers hammered Albany 89-56 in its opener and then barely squeaked by Rider 86-78 thanks to a 16-5 run down the stretch that still didn’t get Pitt supporters to the window with -22 tickets.

"We have so many young guys out there we've got to all be learning and listening and getting better," Dixon said. "We had older guys make young men mistakes and we've got to get that changed."

Granted, this is the time to tighten up these mistakes, but it’s hard to know which team we’re going to see on a nightly basis.

                  Pick: Pitt

Georgia Southern Eagles at Wake Forest Demon Deacons (-12.5)

When C.J. Harris and Travis McKie hit the bench midway through the second half of Wake Forest’s opener, coach Jeff Bzdelik had to be holding his breath.

He must have been seeing flashbacks of last season’s 10-point loss to Stetson. However, this time the Demon Deacons held on with their top scorers on the bench and then went on a 7-point run to close out Loyola of Maryland 75-63 as 2-point favorites.

"It was a great win for us," Bzdelik told reporters. "This basketball team showed a lot of grit and determination. Are there areas where we can do better? Sure. But we won."

The game wouldn’t have been nearly as close if Wake Forest had done a better job from the charity stripe. The Demon Deacons hit only 47.8 percent of their free throws and should be much better than that on a nightly basis.

                  Pick: Georgia Southern

                    ACC

The Atlantic Coast Conference has undergone a major coaching turnover this season. Never in its 58-year history has the ACC had four new coaches in one season.

The new coaches are Brian Gregory at Georgia Tech, Mark Turgeon at Maryland, Jim Larranaga at Miami, and Mark Gottfried at North Carolina State.

Mike Krzyzewski (Duke) is the old man of the group in his 32nd season. Florida State’s Leonard Hamilton (10th year) is the only other coach in double-digits in the ACC. Roy Williams enters his ninth season at North Carolina.

                    BIG TEN

Michigan State has faced two of the best teams in the nation this season in a pair of ACC opponents North Carolina and Duke. The Spartans looked particularly bad against North Carolina in the Carrier Classic last Friday night.

Tom Izzo’s team lost 67-55 while shooting an abysmal 30.6 percent (22-72) from the floor and 10 percent (2-20) from 3-point land. The only reason the final score was somewhat respectable was Michigan State grabbing 19 offensive rebounds.

The biggest question for Michigan State this season will be their offense and their ability to score points consistently.

                    BIG 12

One of our favorite coaches is back in the Midwest. Lon Kruger left the big lights of Las Vegas to take over the slumping Oklahoma program. The Sooners have won just 27 games over the last two years (9-23 SU in conference play) after winning 30 games in 2009.

Kruger will get this team back to prominence and the Sooners could actually be a sleeper team in the mediocre Big 12 this season. He has four returning starters back and an outstanding newcomer in Romero Osby, who transferred from Mississippi State.

                    BIG EAST

Louisville was a possible sleeper pick to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament this season, but unfortunately for the Cardinals, they’ve been hit hard by injuries.

Talented freshman Wayne Blackshear (right shoulder) and forwards Rakeem Buckles (right knee) and Stephan Van Treese (left knee) are all out, but the biggest loss came Sunday when junior guard Mike Marra suffered a torn left ACL. Marra is now out for the rest of the season.

                    PAC-12

UCLA’s season is teetering on disaster right now. The Bruins knew they’d be playing their home games in the ancient L.A. Sports Arena while Pauley Pavilion was getting renovated and that was already an issue for the players.

They lost their first “home” game to Loyola Marymount 69-58 last Friday night and fell to Middle Tennessee State by 20 points Tuesday.

There were issues between coach Ben Howland and players and on Monday, Howland announced that UCLA’s best player, Reeves Nelson, would be suspended indefinitely for "conduct unbecoming a member of the UCLA basketball team."

                    SEC

Kentucky is the heavy favorite to win the SEC this season. The Wildcats are also the second favorite (+400) behind North Carolina (+200) to win the national championship.

Kentucky will have to do it with highly-touted freshman. The Wildcats will play four true freshman significant minutes (Anthony Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Marquis Teague, and Kyle Wiltjer). But the difference this season is Kentucky also has three veterans that the young guys can also rely on in Terrence Jones, Doron Lamb, and Darius Miller.

This team is by far the most talented in the country and might very well be cutting down the nets in the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans on April 2.
