Tuesday’s betting tips: Coach K goes for record win

    Weather to watch

Meteorologists predict temperatures will dip into the 30s around the kickoff of Tuesday’s Ball State-Northern Illinois matchup with a 12 mph NW wind.

    Who’s hot

NCAAF: Ball State has covered in four straight games.

NHL: Colorado is 10-3-1 in its last 14 meetings with Pittsburgh.

NHL: Dallas is 15-6 in its last 21.

NCAAB: The over is 21-7-1 in California’s last 29.

NCAAB: Florida is riding an 8-2-1 run against the spread.

    Who’s not

NCAAF: Northern Illinois is 5-11 against the spread against teams with a winning record.

NHL: Columbus is 4-15 in its last 19 home games.

NHL: Nashville is 0-5 in its last five meetings with Washington.

NCAAB: Michigan State is 7-18-1 against the spread in its last 26.

NCAAB: Kentucky is 0-4-1 against the spread in its last five against Big 12 teams.

    Key stat

41.6 – Northern Illinois averages 41.6 points per game this season and has been held under 40 points just once in its last seven games. The Huskies won six of those games outright and they are 7-1 against the spread in their last eight home contests.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Mike Green, Washington Capitals - Washington Capitals stud defenseman Mike Green's return to the lineup was short-lived. Green re-injured his right ankle in the first period of Friday's victory over the New Jersey Devils and didn’t join the team’s trip for Tuesday’s game in Nashville. He had been sidelined for six consecutive games during which the Capitals went 2-4. Green initially suffered the injury Oct. 22 against the Detroit Red Wings. The former first-round pick has three goals and three assists in eight games this season.

    Game of the day

Kansas Jayhawks versus Kentucky Wildcats (-6, N/A)

    Notable quotable

“It’s one of those games where things you’ve got to get better are going to get exposed. We’re going to have to address something coming out of that game. Something’s going to get exposed that we’re going to have to look at and you guys will ask me, ‘Is that going to be a problem for the whole entire year?” – Florida coach Billy Donovan ahead of Florida’s matchup with Ohio State. The Gators are pegged as 10.5-point underdogs.

    Notes and tips

Mike Krzyzewski takes his first stab at his 903rd career win Tuesday against Michigan State at Madison Square Garden in the State Farm Champions Classic. Coach K is tied for the most wins in Division I hoops with Bob Knight after the Blue Devils hammered Presbyterian in their season opener. “I’d rather go out and try to win this game for the right reasons, and the residual is you get 903,” Krzyzewski told reporters. “I mean, that’s another perk you get from it. That’s not the perk. The perk is beating Michigan State, going 3-0 and becoming a better team. And then things add up.” Duke is set as a 6-point favorite.

Rex Grossman will remain the starting quarterback of the Washington Redskins. Coach Mike Shanahan said Monday that he is sticking with Grossman over John Beck for this week's game against the Dallas Cowboys. Grossman was tabbed to start Sunday’s tilt against Miami, his first since being benched in favor of Beck after starting the season's first five games. Beck went 0-3 as the starter, prompting the switch. Grossman has thrown for 1,347 yards and six touchdowns this season. The Redskins opened around +9 at home to Dallas.

Michigan coach Brady Hoke believes quarterback Denard Robinson will be healthy and ready to play in this weekend's game against No. 17 Nebraska. Robinson suffered a sprained wrist during the third quarter of the 20th-ranked Wolverines' 31-14 win over Illinois and did not return. Hoke said Robinson looked good during Sunday's practice and should be fine all week. Robinson has passed for 1,709 yards and rushed for 910 more with 25 total touchdowns this season. Michigan opened as a 3.5-point home favorite.

      Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Matt Schaub (foot) is out for year; a huge blow for the Texans.

-- Big Dozen took Joe Paterno's name off their league championship trophy. Doesn't take long for the rats to start jumping off the ship.

-- I compared Tim Tebow to former Bears' QB Bobby Douglass; one big difference-- while Tebow is highly religious, Douglass was married to a Playboy bunny. Advantage, Douglass.

-- If I owned the Jets, I'd quash Rex Ryan's acting career pretty fast.

-- Dodgers gave mediocre 2B Mark Ellis $8.75M for two years, not too hard to figure out why they're a bankrupt, inept organization.

-- Would be interesting if Mark Cuban buys the Dodgers; they wouldn't be bankrupt or inept anymore. That would shake things up.

      *********************

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

      13) Denver is 3-1 with Tim Tebow starting at QB, 1-4 when Kyle Orton starts; the problem for John Elway/John Fox is this: How far do you think Tebow can take you, long-term? He is unquestionably a unique player who makes the Broncos hard to prepare for, but can you win a Super Bowl this way? If you decide to go in another direction, what do you do with Tebow? Would another team want him? Can you cut a starting QB who wins more than he loses? He probably gets talked about too much, but it surely will be an interesting decision for the Broncos.

      12) Somewhere, Doug Flutie watches TV on Sundays and wishes he had gotten the chance that Tebow is getting.

      11) Over 24,000 couples got married last Friday, on 11-11-11. Makes it lot harder for spouses to forget their anniversary.

      10) Thanks to the gentleman who e-mailed me, correcting my lack of military knowledge; the USS Carl Vinson is an aircraft carrier, not a battleship. I’d like to say I knew the difference, but in reality, not so much. Now I know.

      9) There have been three NFL games this year where a team didn’t score a TD and didn't try a field goal, a true shutout. Seahawks at Pittsburgh in Week 2, Raiders against Kansas City in Week 7, and the Colts against Atlanta in Week 9.

      8) In their last three games, Ravens have forced only six 3/outs on 31 drives (19.4%). In their first six games, they forced 32 on 74 drives (43.2%). Forcing 3/outs helps you win the battle for field position, makes your offense’s job a little easier.

      7) NFL Network’s special on Al Davis was interesting; it covered both sides of the man. Am guessing they re-did a lot of it after he passed away in early October. Hopefully the new ownership of the Raiders will hang onto coaches longer than Davis did in his later years.

      6) I’m amazed at the amount of high school football that is played on artificial turf; I’m told a field costs about $250,000 to install. Lot of cash for a high school that might play five home games a year, maybe 7-8 down south.

      5) One thing for sure; I don’t give a rat’s ass about the President’s Cup this weekend, and I’m guessing Eldrick Woods doesn’t either, though I’m sure his sponsors sure do.

      4) Quite a brickfest in LA over weekend, at USC’s home opener. Cal-Northridge shot 4-21 from the arc, the Trojans were 0-15, but still won by 7. Not going to get too far in the Pac-12 shooting 0-15 from the arc.

Quick question: since Cal-Northridge’s nickname is Matadors, does that mean they play matador defense? They fouled USC 30 times in this game. Might’ve been smarter just to stand there and watch them hoist bricks?

      3) This coming Saturday used to be THE DAY in college football, along with January 1; now thanks to the BCS, neither day is that much of a big deal. Most of the big rivalries have jumped forward to next week or the week after, extending the season a couple weeks. Having Rivalry Saturday as part of Thanksgiving weekend clutters things up a lot. Awful lot of stuff going on next weekend.

      2) Over their first five games, Lions converted 23 of 57 third down plays (40.4%); in four games since then, they’re 11-56 (19.6%). Detroit has one of the better backup QBs in Shaun Hill; if Stafford has a broken index finger on his right hand, isn’t it stupid to let him start?

      1) We wrote last week that Eagles’ lack of ball security in their Chicago loss was alarming; DeSean Jackson just seemed out of it, or even worse, indifferent. Now we find out he skipped a team meeting Saturday, and so he didn’t play against the Cardinals.

This is why the Rams drafted Donnie Avery instead of Jackson; there were signs in college Jackson could be a problem (bigger problem was that Avery wasn’t difficult, he just couldn’t play).

If the Eagles are smart, they weather the storm and forge ahead next year, probably with Steve Spagnuolo as their new defensive coordinator. Firing Andy Reid, in my humble opinion, would be a big mistake.

          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Tuesday, November 15

West Virginia struggled in its opener, beating Oral Roberts 78-71; they gave up 17 offensive rebounds and fouled 25 times-- WV only has three guys who played college ball LY. This is Kent State's opener- they lost by 13 to Florida LY, best team they played- they have four starters back from LY's 25-12 team, but have a new coach. Big East home favorites of less than 25 points are 2-6 vs spread.

San Diego State is 3-0, beating stiffs by 12-33-15 points at home; now they go to Waco to play Baylor squad that has four starters back from 18-13 team that went 7-9 in Big 12; Bears beat couple cupcakes by 20-33 points. Aztecs have almost whole new team after going 34-3 LY, so this is tough test, since Baylor has a terrific frontcourt.

Rhode Island lost its opener 92-90 in OT at George Mason, as Patriots shot 51% at home and Rams turned ball over 19 times while going 6-25 behind arc. URI lost three starters from LY's 20-14 team. Texas lost all five starters from LY, but Brown is starter quality- they beat Boston U by 36 in their opener. Big X home favorites are 2-4 against spread.

Belmont lost 77-76 at Duke last week; they're legit good team; Bruins forced 19 Duke turnovers and stayed even on boards- getting chance to play in-state rival has them excited. Memphis has all five starters back from 25-10 team that was 10-6 in league then won C-USA by point at UTEP- they lost by hoop to Arizona in NCAAs. This is their opener.

Villanova beats LaSalle every year, but LY's game was 84-81; too bad for Explorers big man Murray transferred after the season. Four of last six Villanova series wins were by 13+ points. LaSalle crushed Lafayette in its opener- they start four guards, because thats who their best players are. Villanova won its opener by 36, making 11-25 from the arc.

Michigan State lost its opener by 12 to North Carolina; their bench was 4-24 from floor, but game was outdoors on a ship, so hard to indict them for that. Spartans are 1-3 vs Duke last nine years, losing 84-79 at Duke LY, losing all three preseason meetings, by 24-7-5 points. Duke slipped by Belmont last week by a point. ACC favorites are 5-2 vs spread.

Ohio State lost three starters from 34-3 team that went 16-2 in Big 11, but got upset by Kentucky in Sweet 16; good news is Sullinger returned to school, which is why Buckeyes are betting favorite in Vegas to win a national title next spring. State won 93-75 at Florida LY. Gators have lot of good guards; Donovan improved his coaching staff in offseason this is going to be a good Florida team, but they're young up front.

Iowa State crushed Drake 91-43 LY; they're 6-3 in last nine series games, but lost two of last three visits here, winning 90-70 in last visit in 2009. Cyclones made 10-22 from arc in 86-77 win over Lehigh- they've got lot of talented newcomers, either JCs/transfers. Drake has four starters back from LY- his team took a trip to New Zealand/Australia last summer.

Southern Illinois lost to D-II Ohio Dominican, day before Panthers lost to Southern Indiana by 23; home team won Salukis' last seven games vs Saint Louis. Billikens lost last three visits here by 26-9-16 points. These teams didn't play LY. Saint Louis held Tennessee State under 30% from floor in its opener- they have very good set of guards.

Kansas is lot younger/thinner than usual; they lost four starters from its 35-3 team that went 14-2 in Big 12 but lost in Elite 8- two of its recruits are ineligible. Kentucky has three starters back from 29-9 team that was 10-6 in SEC and lost by point to UConn in national semis. Kentucky won its opener by 50 over Marist, but game was 45-36 at the half.

Road team won both Santa Clara-UCSB games last two years; Broncos won 79-68 in Thunderdome two years ago, lost 80-69 at home in LY's meeting. Santa Clara haa good guards, but seven of its 13 players are new to college ball. Broncos were 24-14 LY, 8-6 in WCC. Gauchos has four starters back from 18-14, 8-8 team. Orlando Johnson is one best players in country- UCSB has a senior-laden team.

Home side won all three Northern Colorado-Wyoming games; Bears won 67-53 LY in Greeley, but Bears lost four starters from 21-11 team that was 13-3 in Big Sky, losing to San Diego State in NCAAs. Wyoming's new coach is former Florida aide Shyatt, so they're going to play faster. Bears committed 20 turnovers, 29 fouls in home loss to New Mexico St.

Utah State won 10 of last 11 games vs Weber State, winning last four by 26-6-12-12 points; Aggies won three of last four visits here, winning by 6-19-6 points. Very young Utah State team beat BYU at home in first game. Weber State has four starters back plus injured star Lilliard from an 18-14 team- they're expected to be very good, win the Big Sky title.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday's NCAAB action: What bettors need to know
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Kansas vs. Kentucky (-6, N/A)

                THE STORY
: The two winningest programs in Division I square off when No. 13 Kansas and No. 2 Kentucky meet in the State Farm Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden. Kentucky (2,053 wins) will try to add to its relatively slim lead over Kansas (2,039 wins) on the all-time victory list. Both teams rolled to easy victories in their openers, Kansas routing Towson 100-54 in the EA Sports Maui Invitational and Kentucky rolling Marist 108-58.

                TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT KANSAS (1-0, 0-0 Big 12): The Jayhawks return only one full-time starter in guard Tyshawn Taylor, but they certainly aren't short on talent. Junior forward Thomas Robinson showed the force he is capable of being with 18 points, 11 rebounds and four assists against Towson. Junior guard Travis Releford scored 14 points, and 7-foot center Jeff Withey had 10 points and four blocked shots. Kansas will have to nurse along some of its younger, less experienced players, but an eighth straight Big 12 title is not out of the question.

ABOUT KENTUCKY (1-0, 0-0 SEC): The Wildcats have another crop of stellar freshmen with point guard Marquis Teague, 6-10 forward Anthony Davis, 6-7 swingman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and 6-9 forward Kyle Wiltjer. Add to the mix sophomores Doron Lamb (12.3 ppg) and Terrence Jones (15.7 ppg, 8.8 rpg), who returned rather than jumping to the NBA, and the Wildcats should be poised for a deep run. In a testament to their depth, the Wildcats had five players score in double figures against Marist, and Jones wasn't one of them. Davis made a huge splash in his debut, putting up 23 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots. Teague added 16 points to go along with 15 apiece from Lamb and Kidd-Gilchrist and 14 from Wiltjer.

                TIP-INS

                1. The meeting will mark the first between head coach Bill Self and John Calipari since Self's Kansas team beat Calipari's Memphis squad 75-68 in overtime in the national championship game on April 7, 2008.

                2. The teams last met in the second round of the 2007 NCAA tournament, with Kansas winning 88-76 in Chicago. Kentucky leads the all-time series 19-6, but Kansas has won the last three meetings.

                3. The Wildcats will be the highest-ranked team Kansas has faced since beating No. 2 Memphis in the national title game in 2007 and the highest-ranked regular-season opponent since the Jayhawks beat No. 1 Florida in the 2006 Las Vegas Invitational.

                Florida at Ohio State (-10.5)

                THE STORY
: The reigning Big Ten and SEC champions clash when No. 3 Ohio State hosts No. 10 Florida as part of the Global Sports Shootout. The Buckeyes opened their four-game Shootout slate with a 73-43 rout of Wright State, while the Gators rolled to a 99-59 home win over Jackson State. Ohio State won at Florida last season, 93-75.

                TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN2

ABOUT FLORIDA (1-0, 0-0 SEC): The Gators won their opener for the 21st consecutive season, using an early 23-0 run to build a 33-point lead in the first 11:08 of play. Junior guards Kenny Boynton and Mike Rosario paced five players in double digits with 19 points, while sophomore C Patric Young had 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Senior PG Erving Walker joined Boynton as a second-team All-SEC pick last season.

ABOUT OHIO STATE (1-0, 0-0 Big Ten): The Buckeyes had no trouble getting past the Raiders on Friday, riding a 19-point effort from sophomore All-America PF Jared Sullinger. Senior SG William Buford, who will make his 100th career start Tuesday, added 13 points in the opener, while sophomore Aaron Craft added 10 points and three steals. Sophomore SF Deshaun Thomas and sophomore SG Lenzelle Smith Jr. both made a smooth transition into the starting lineup, combining for 17 points.

                TIP-INS

                1. Ohio State leads the all-time series, 7-4, but Florida claimed the biggest matchup — an 84-75 victory in the 2007 national championship game.

                2. The Buckeyes have won 23 straight home games and are 38-1 in Columbus since the start of the 2009-10 season.

                3. Florida posted the third-best road record in the nation last season, winning 75 percent of its games away from home.

                Belmont at Memphis (N/A)

                THE STORY
: Belmont is certainly not shying away from big-time competition early in the season. After narrowly falling at No. 6 Duke on Friday, the Bruins will take another stab at a top 10 team when they visit No. 10 Memphis on Tuesday in the opening round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational. Belmont, which returns 10 of its top 12 players from last season, battled Duke to the final buzzer before falling 77-76. A strong favorite to take the Atlantic Sun Conference, the Bruins are hoping for a deep run in the NCAA Tournament and are tuning up against top competition. The Tigers return five starters and are the favorites to assume their customary place atop Conference USA.

                TV: 12 p.m. ET, ESPN, ESPN3.com.

ABOUT BELMONT (0-1): The Bruins start three seniors and two juniors on a team that went 30-5 last season and lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Belmont certainly did not appear fazed by the big stage Friday, going into Cameron Indoor Stadium on national television and taking Duke to the wire. The Bruins forced 19 turnovers and were even on the glass (33-33). Five players reached double figures in scoring for Belmont, led by Kerron Johnson’s 15 points.

ABOUT MEMPHIS (2010-11: 25-10, 10-6 C-USA): Coach Josh Pastner has done a remarkable job of rebuilding the program since taking over from John Calipari. After missing the NCAA Tournament in his first season, Pastner guided the Tigers to a Conference USA tournament title in 2011. Still very young with five freshmen and sophomores among the top seven in the rotation, Memphis will lean on senior Wesley Witherspoon and sophomore Will Barton - the team’s leading returning scorer.

                TIP-INS:

                1. The Bruins led the nation in bench production last season at 40.2 points.

                2. The Tigers are 17-5 all-time against Atlantic Sun Conference foes.

                3. Memphis is getting some help on the sidelines from Los Angeles Lakers forward Luke Walton, who played with Pastner at Arizona and is serving as an assistant during the NBA lockout

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Michigan State versus Duke (-6, N/A)

With all eyes on Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski as he looks for his 903rd career win, Michigan State is getting lost in the shuffle.

If nothing else, you have to admire the Spartans’ gumption for starting the season on an air craft carrier against North Carolina and then following it up with a date with Duke at Madison Square Garden in the State Farm Champions Classic.

"We’re going to know, and we’re going to learn, where we’re at," Spartans coach Tom Izzo told reporters. "It’ll be easier to coach guys, to say, if you didn’t win the game, and you did a poor job, this is where you gotta get to, this is where you gotta be."

The Spartans allowed the Tar Heels to get out on a 22-6 run before the half on Veteran’s Day and then cruised to a 67-55 victory as Michigan State battled foul trouble.

Tom Izzo’s boys will have a tough time again as Coach K and the Blue Devils look to make history.

                  Pick: Duke

                  Kansas versus Kentucky (-6, N/A)

Kentucky coach John Calipari knows how important it is for his young Wildcats to get out to a solid start to the season, but it doesn’t sound like everyone’s on the same page yet.

“This is a great test,” Calipari told reporters. “If we’re in a close game and stuff doesn’t go right, don’t look at my players. That’s me. We just haven’t had time. It’s the middle of November. Let’s hope it’s not a one-point game and someone has the ball late.”

Kentucky does have six freshman, but it’s not like the Jayhawks have a ton of experience either and both clubs aren’t afraid to talk about this matchup’s importance either.

“This game right here is like a statement game, to let everybody know how good we are,” UK guard Doron Lamb said. “We just want to prove to everybody that we’re the best team in the country.”

This one goes down to the wire.

                  Pick: Kansas

Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL bets
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

                        HOT TEAM: New York Rangers

They had to open the season overseas, and even when they came back to North America, the renovated Madison Square Garden wasn’t ready yet, so they continued on the road in the Western Conference.

A month later, the Rangers have finally had some home games, have had some time to sleep in their own beds, and have been able to recuperate. The results have been impressive. Friday’s 5-1 win over Carolina, in which they scored four goals in the third period, was New York’s sixth consecutive, the franchise’s longest winning streak since October 2009.

The Rangers are now 5-1-1 in their refurbished home, which is the best start they've had there since 1992. And they seem to be snapping slumps along the way. On Friday, vs. Carolina, Brandon Dubinsky finally scored his first goal of the season, after potting 24 last year.

It's going to be tough for New York to keep up with Pittsburgh in the Atlantic Division, moving forward, but the Rangers have skill up front, depth on the back line, and of course, they can always rely on goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, if all else fails.

                        COLD TEAM: Colorado Avalanche

When you can’t take advantage of home ice, you’re going to have problems in the Western Conference, and the Avalanche are proof positive. Colorado is 2-6 in Denver, and is only 1-5 in November overall.

Trying to build off a 4-3 win over the Islanders on Thursday, Colorado again came up short on Saturday, dropping a 4-3 decision to Calgary in which the Flames opened with a 3-0 in the first period.

Maybe it’s just something about Calgary that gets Colorado shaking. The Flames have defeated the Avalanche eight consecutive straight times and two times this month.

And let’s face it, the defense needs to improve. Goaltenders Semyon Varlamov and Jean-Sebastien Giguere have been good at times, but with little help, Colorado has already allowed 50 goals.

                        OVER PLAY: Carolina Hurricanes

They’re still not very good, and as usual, it will be a grind for them to make the playoffs in the Eastern Conference, but boy are the Hurricanes an entertaining watch these days. And that description is usually code for overs. Plenty of them.

Carolina’s 5-3 victory over the Penguins on Saturday night was the team’s second straight over in a 24-hour span. The Hurricanes have gone over in six of the last seven games, and have only gone under in November once.

The offense -- often a problem in Carolina -- has been fast and furious. Jeff Skinner has seven goals and 10 assists, Tuomo Ruutu has six scores, and even Eric Staal, who has had a slow start, has recovered a bit with four goals and three assists.

Goaltender Cam Ward, who made 37 saves vs. the Penguins, is due for a breakout, so beware. Stuck with 3.05 goals-against average, he’s bound to turn it around at some point, so ride this over train while you can.

                        UNDER PLAY: St. Louis Blues

New coach Ken Hitchcock has reinvigorated the troops, and the Blues have notched at least one point in all three of his games behind the bench. And as any typical Hitchcock team would do, St. Louis has returned to its stingy ways on defense.

Look no further than a 3-0 victory over Tampa Bay on Saturday night. It was Hitchcock’s second win in three tries, and all three of his games have gone under. In fact, St. Louis is riding a five-game under streak, headed into Tuesday’s game versus Detroit.

In the brief Hitchcock Era, the Blues have outscored the competition, 8-3, and goaltenders Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott have one shutout each. Keep St. Louis on your under radar, moving forward.

                        Surveying the schedule:

** The banged-up Flyers had a nice, little respite last week, playing only once, at Tampa Bay. But they’ll get back to it this week. Sunday’s game versus the Panthers in Florida was the opener of a back-to-back set of games for Philadelphia, and opened a run of five games in a nine-day span.

** The Canucks, on the other hand, will take a little breather this week. Sunday’s game vs. the Islanders in Vancouver was one of just two games in a seven-day span for the defending Western Conference champions. So, expect some fresh legs when the Canucks play the Senators on Nov. 20.

Ice picks: Tuesday's best NHL bets
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Jersey Devils at Boston Bruins (-190, 5)

It’s safe to say the Boston Bruins have shaken their Stanley Cup hangover.

They got out of the gate slow and had a lot of problems in their own end and on the forecheck on a nightly basis, but now they head into Tuesday’s date with the Devils riding a five-game winning streak.

They’re averaging six goals per game over the stretch and are playing nasty – just ask Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller, who was steamrolled by Milan Lucic on Saturday.

"It's pretty to watch. As a goalie, it's OK to sit back and watch your team play like that sometimes. You've just got to be ready if it comes back your way," Boston goalie Tim Thomas told reporters. "We've seen some beautiful plays."

You wouldn’t go as far to say the same thing about New Jersey’s recent play, but the Devils have reeled off four wins in their last five. Ilya Kovalchuk may also return from his groin injury.

                          Pick: Over

Phoenix Coyotes at Toronto Maple Leafs (-115, 5.5)

It’s hard to complain about Toronto’s 10-6-1 record, but Leafs bettors should be cautious.

Toronto has dropped three of its last four and some disturbing trends are surfacing. The Leafs had no business picking up a point in an overtime loss to St. Louis last week when they were outshot 32-8 in the final 45 minutes. And they weren’t any better in a 5-2 loss at home to the rival Senators on Saturday, when they welcomed in this year’s Hall of Fame inductees.

“We didn’t have a killer instinct,” coach Ron Wilson told reporters. “Again, like in St. Louis, we backed off a little bit … That’s what we’re going to have to figure out: How to push the pace for 60 minutes and develop that kind of instinct to keep pushing a team down.”

Phoenix won’t let the Leafs off the hook, either. The Coyotes are coming off an impressive 3-0 shutout at San Jose.

                          Pick: Coyotes

Instant replay: NCAAF and NFL betting recap

Each week, we’ll recap all the betting information you need to know from the college and pro football action that went down over the weekend.

                              NCAAF betting recap

It was a solid week for underdog bettors with the pups going 29-27 against the spread, with 15 underdogs winning outright.

Oregon was one of those underdogs and pulled off the biggest win of the weekend, pounding then No. 2 Stanford 53-30 as a 2.5-point pup on the road. The win moved the Ducks up three spots to No. 4 in the BCS standings. Stanford dropped all the way to No. 9 with the loss.

TCU did its part to shake up the BCS landscape as well, downing Boise State 36-35 as a huge 17-point underdog. That loss bumped the Broncos down to No. 10 in the BCS standings.

In the bad beat department, Memphis had a pair of 18-point leads over UAB and still couldn’t close out the deal. UAB put 24 points on the fourth quarter to slip by the Tigers 41-35 as a 5.5-point underdog.

The under finished 31-26 for the week.

                              NFL betting recap

From Tim Tebow’s two-completion victory over Kansas City to a couple of big meltdowns by a couple of high-profile teams, it was an interesting week in the NFL.

Underdogs were 8-7 against the spread ahead of Monday night’s Vikings-Packers contest and all eight of those pups won outright – seven of which came on the road.

Philadelphia was stunned 21-17 by the visiting Arizona Cardinals, who cashed in as fat 13.5-point favorites and Seattle shocked the Baltimore Ravens 22-17 as a 7-point underdog.

It looked as though under bettors would get through Sunday with a tidy profit before Sunday’s last four games on the schedule all played over their totals. The under was 8-7 in Week 10 heading into the Monday Nighter.

After the over dominated early this season, things are back to normal now. The over is 73-71 to date.
