Krzyzewski goes for record vs. Michigan State

        MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS (0-1)

        vs. DUKE BLUE DEVILS (2-0)

State Farm Champions Classic - New York, NY
        Tip-off: Tuesday, 7:00 p.m. EDT
        Line: Duke -6, Total: 138.5

Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski seeks his record-breaking 903rd career win, but Tom Izzo’s Michigan State Spartans will look to delay that effort on a neutral court in the State Farm Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden.

Krzyzewski tied Bob Knight’s all-time Division I wins record on Saturday with a victory over Presbyterian, to move his team to 2-0, while the Spartans lost their first game of the season against Duke’s rival, North Carolina, on board the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier. The Blue Devils kicked off their season slowly, beating 11-point underdog Belmont by one point (77-76), but showed marked improvement in their second contest, covering the 28.5-point spread easily in a 96-55 win over Presbyterian. Krzyzewski’s team finished off last season strongly, winning ATS in eight of its last 13 matches. Additionally, over the last two seasons Krzyzewski has coached well at neutral sites, going 14-8 ATS (64%) in those games. Michigan State, which missed 18 of 20 three-pointers versus UNC, does not have the shooters to keep up with the high-scoring Blue Devils. Play on DUKE to come out victorious and remain undefeated, giving Coach K his record-breaking win.

These two highly-rated FoxSheets trends also like the Blue Devils to win on Tuesday.

Mike Krzyzewski is 65-39 ATS (62.5%, +22.1 Units) off a home win scoring 85 or more points as the coach of DUKE. The average score was DUKE 85.2, OPPONENT 67.4 - (Rating = 2*).

Tom Izzo is 13-30 ATS (30.2%, -20.0 Units) in road games after playing a game as an underdog as the coach of MICHIGAN STATE. The average score was MICHIGAN ST 66.8, OPPONENT 67.6 - (Rating = 2*).

The Spartans (0-1) were led by Draymond Green in their 67-55 loss to the Tar Heels, who dropped 13 points and grabbed 18 rebounds. But he was also at the center of Michigan State’s sloppy play with five turnovers and 13 missed shots in a weak and inefficient offensive performance. The Spartans shot just 30.6% from the field and were a dismal 2-of-20 from three-point range in their first game, splits that will have to improve if they want any hope of pulling off the upset against the always sharp-shooting Blue Devils.

Duke (2-0) showed a big transition between its first two games after almost falling to Belmont at home in its season opener. After turning the ball over 19 times to the Bruins, the Blue Devils took much better care of the ball in their second game, only giving it away 10 times. Duke is shooting 52% FG, including an impressive 49% from downtown (17-for-35). The key for remaining efficient on offense rests in the frontcourt, which dominated the Blue Hose in the paint, outscoring them 40-16 down low. Mason and Miles Plumlee (95 pts, 39 reb combined) will have to continue their strong play against a stellar Spartans frontcourt that outscored an elite North Carolina crew in the paint last Friday.

No. 2 Kentucky and No. 12 Kansas square off at MSG

          KANSAS JAYHAWKS (1-0)

          vs. KENTUCKY WILDCATS (1-0)

State Farm Champions Classic - New York, NY
          Tip-off: Tuesday, 9:20 p.m. EDT
          Line: Kentucky -6, Total: 147.5

Two of college basketball’s most storied franchises, Kansas and Kentucky, do battle at New York City’s Madison Square Garden as part of the inaugural Champions Classic Tuesday night.

Both teams lost key players from last year’s roster, but the Wildcats have reloaded more effectively. No. 2 Kentucky brought in the nation’s best recruiting class, and they have as much offensive firepower as any team in the nation. No. 12 Kansas has one of the nation’s best power forwards in blue-collar banger Thomas Robinson, but they don’t have the kind of individual talent to match up across the board with the Wildcats. UK has fared well in neutral court games under John Calipari, going 20-3 SU and 14-8 ATS (64%) in his first two seasons in Lexington. The Jayhawks are 19-5 SU in neutral-site action, but only 11-13 ATS since 2008-09. KENTUCKY is the pick to win and cover the moderate spread.

The FoxSheets have a trend concerning the UK head coach that works in the Wildcats’ favor:

John Calipari is 16-6 ATS (72.7%, +9.4 Units) after a game with 24 or more assists in all games he has coached since 1997. The average score was Calipari 78.0, OPPONENT 63.3.

Kansas lost its top three, and four of its top five, scorers from last year’s squad. But, unlike Kentucky, the Jayhawks had a down year recruiting. A lot of Robinson’s points come on second chance opportunities, and point guard Tyshawn Taylor is one of the fastest players in the nation, capable of getting to the basket. They scored 100 points in a blowout win over Towson on Friday, shooting 59% from the floor and committing just five turnovers. But no one on this team has had the experience of creating his own offense against a top-flight team like Kentucky. This will be the Jayhawks’ first game as an underdog since 2008-09. They were 2-4 SU and 3-3 ATS as an underdog that season.

The Wildcats once again have a collection of freshman superstars to go along with three double-digit scorers from last year’s Final Four team: forward Terrence Jones (15.7 PPG last season) and guards Doron Lamb (12.3 PPG) and Darius Miller (10.9 PPG). Freshmen Anthony Davis (23 points, 10 assists, 5 blocks), Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (15 points), Marquis Teague (16 points) and Kyle Witjer (14 points) all had impressive debuts in a 108-58 home win over Marist. The team shot 61% from the floor and outrebounded the Red Foxes 51 to 29.

No. 3 Ohio State hosts No. 7 Florida on Tuesday

            FLORIDA GATORS (1-0)

            at OHIO STATE BUCKEYES (1-0)

            Tip-off: Tuesday, 8:00 p.m. EDT
Line: Ohio State -10.5, Total: 136.5

After overpowering small school opponents in their respective openers, No. 7 Florida and No. 3 Ohio State play their first marquee game of the year when the teams face off in Columbus Tuesday night.

When these teams met in Gainesville a year ago, the Buckeyes blitzed the Gators late. They forced 11 turnovers over the final 12½ minutes and outscored Florida 37-18 during that span in an eventual 93-75 road win. The Gators also had no answer for Buckeyes big man Jared Sullinger, who had 26 points on 13-of-17 shooting. They lost some valuable contributors from last year’s team, but Ohio State still has point guard Aaron Craft, arguably the best perimeter defender in the nation, and senior William Buford to harass Florida’s four-guard lineup. Throw in the home-court advantage and Sullinger’s edge (in skill and in weight: 25 pounds) over Patric Young, the Gators’ lone low post presence, and OHIO STATE is the pick to cover the hefty spread.

The FoxSheets have a strong trend working against Florida:

Play Against - Underdogs of 10 to 19.5 points (FLORIDA) - after a win by 10 points or more, with just two starters returning from last year in the first 5 games of the season. (34-11 over the last 5 seasons, 75.6%, +21.9 units. Rating = 2*).

If Florida is going to pull off the win, it will need to do it from the perimeter. Along with returning starters Erving Walker and Kenny Boynton, the Gators often utilize a four-guard lineup with top freshman Brandon Beal and Rutgers transfer Mike Rosario (who came off the bench in their opener against Jackson State, but played the fifth-most minutes on the team). Those four combined to go 11-for-23 from three-point land in an easy 99-59 win over Jackson State.

The obvious issue against Ohio State will be matching up with Sullinger, the nation’s top big man. Young, a sophomore, had his way against an undersized Jackson State front line (12 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 blocks) but showed little against top competition in his freshman season. The Gators’ only other true frontcourt player who gets significant minutes is 6-foot-10, 225-pound stretch power forward Erik Murphy.

The Buckeyes, as expected, had little trouble dispatching of Wright State in their season-opener. Sullinger led the way with 19 points and nine rebounds in a 73-42 win, as OSU forced 25 turnovers and limited the Raiders to 31.7% FG.

The only real question mark for Ohio State is how it replaces the three-point shooting of Jon Diebler, who hit 50.2% of his threes as the biggest part of OSU’s nation’s-best 42.3% 3-pt FG Pct. But a big part of that success stems from the double teams that Sullinger draws. Buford (44% on threes last season) and Craft (38% 3-pt FG last year) are both capable of hitting open jumpers, though the team shot just 5-for-14 from three in the Wright State win.

OSU has won 40 of its past 41 games SU at Value City Arena, though the Buckeyes are only 20-17 ATS in lined games during that span.

                Tuesday Trio

                November 15, 2011

With the NBA season quickly going down the tubes, the focus on the hardwood will be on college basketball moving forward. The 24-hour marathon goes through the entire day on Tuesday with a handful of powerhouse teams hooking up. We'll take a look at the three key night contests, starting with an ACC/Big 10 showdown at Madison Square Garden.

                Duke (-6, 138 ½) vs. Michigan State - 7:00 PM EST (ESPN)

The Blue Devils (2-0) survived a scare in their season opening 77-76 home victory over Belmont. Duke failed to cover as 11 ½-point favorites, but made up for it with a 96-55 blowout of Presbyterian to cash as 29 ½-point 'chalk.' The first big test now comes in Manhattan against a Michigan State squad that is already 0-1 against Tobacco Road's finest.

The Spartans (0-1) fell short in their season opener against top-ranked North Carolina, 67-55 on an aircraft carrier in San Diego. Michigan State shot just 30% from the floor, while making only 2 of 20 attempts from three-point range. The only positive for the Spartans was the 42-31 rebounding advantage over the Tar Heels, including 18 boards from senior forward Draymond Green.

Duke knocked off Michigan State in the ACC/Big 10 Challenge last December, 84-79, but the Spartans cashed as 10-point underdogs. The Spartans hit 49% of their shots from the field, but eventual top-pick Kyrie Irving burned MSU for 31 points, including 13 from the free-throw line.

                Florida at Ohio State (-10 ½, 136 ½) - 8:00 PM EST (ESPN2)

A top-10 battle takes place in Columbus as the Gators (1-0) look to avenge an ugly home defeat to the Buckeyes (1-0) last season. Florida jumped out to a 26-point halftime lead in a 99-59 rout of Jackson State in Gainesville as the Gators drilled 13 three-pointers. The Gators will take on an Ohio State club that destroyed Wright State on Friday, 73-42 to cash as 27-point favorites.

These two schools have a nice rivalry going over the last five years after playing for both the football and basketball championship in the same season (2007). Ohio State lost each of those title games, but the Buckeyes got a modicum of revenge with a pair of double-digit victories over Billy Donovan's squad the last two meetings. The Buckeyes drilled the Gators last December at the O'Connell Center, 93-75 as 2 ½-point 'dogs as OSU shot a sizzling 63% from the floor.

Florida finished last season on a 13-2 run to the 'over,' while compiling a perfect 6-0 ATS mark in the underdog role. Meanwhile, the Buckeyes are 6-9 ATS in their last 15 games as double-digit favorites, but Thad Matta's group is 6-2 ATS the previous eight contests at Value City Arena.

                Kansas vs. Kentucky (-6, 147 ½) - 9:20 PM EST (ESPN)

Two of the most legendary programs in college basketball history wrap up the night at Madison Square Garden following Duke and Michigan State. The Wildcats and Jayhawks are the top two schools with the most wins ever as both look for their second victory of the season tonight. Kentucky (1-0) turned a nine-point halftime lead into a 108-58 trouncing of Marist in its opener at Rupp Arena as the Wildcats covered as 35-point favorites. Kansas (1-0) also took care of its business to start the season with a 100-54 thumping of Towson at Allen Fieldhouse, while cashing as 32 ½-point 'chalk.'

Plenty of familiar faces have moved on as the Wildcats are without star point guard Brandon Knight, while KU lost four starters following a run to the Elite Eight. These clubs are meeting for the first time since the second round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament when the top-seeded Jayhawks eliminated Kentucky, 88-76 as eight-point favorites.

Bill Self's team is listed as an underdog for the first time since losing in the Sweet 16 of the 2009 Big Dance to Michigan State, 67-62. Kentucky covered just six of its final 15 games last season as a single-digit favorite, including a 5-8 ATS mark in that role away from Lexington.

                  Armadillo's Write-Up

                  Tuesday, November 15

West Virginia struggled in its opener, beating Oral Roberts 78-71; they gave up 17 offensive rebounds and fouled 25 times-- WV only has three guys who played college ball LY. This is Kent State's opener- they lost by 13 to Florida LY, best team they played- they have four starters back from LY's 25-12 team, but have a new coach. Big East home favorites of less than 25 points are 2-6 vs spread.

San Diego State is 3-0, beating stiffs by 12-33-15 points at home; now they go to Waco to play Baylor squad that has four starters back from 18-13 team that went 7-9 in Big 12; Bears beat couple cupcakes by 20-33 points. Aztecs have almost whole new team after going 34-3 LY, so this is tough test, since Baylor has a terrific frontcourt.

Rhode Island lost its opener 92-90 in OT at George Mason, as Patriots shot 51% at home and Rams turned ball over 19 times while going 6-25 behind arc. URI lost three starters from LY's 20-14 team. Texas lost all five starters from LY, but Brown is starter quality- they beat Boston U by 36 in their opener. Big X home favorites are 2-4 against spread.

Belmont lost 77-76 at Duke last week; they're legit good team; Bruins forced 19 Duke turnovers and stayed even on boards- getting chance to play in-state rival has them excited. Memphis has all five starters back from 25-10 team that was 10-6 in league then won C-USA by point at UTEP- they lost by hoop to Arizona in NCAAs. This is their opener.

Villanova beats LaSalle every year, but LY's game was 84-81; too bad for Explorers big man Murray transferred after the season. Four of last six Villanova series wins were by 13+ points. LaSalle crushed Lafayette in its opener- they start four guards, because thats who their best players are. Villanova won its opener by 36, making 11-25 from the arc.

Michigan State lost its opener by 12 to North Carolina; their bench was 4-24 from floor, but game was outdoors on a ship, so hard to indict them for that. Spartans are 1-3 vs Duke last nine years, losing 84-79 at Duke LY, losing all three preseason meetings, by 24-7-5 points. Duke slipped by Belmont last week by a point. ACC favorites are 5-2 vs spread.

Ohio State lost three starters from 34-3 team that went 16-2 in Big 11, but got upset by Kentucky in Sweet 16; good news is Sullinger returned to school, which is why Buckeyes are betting favorite in Vegas to win a national title next spring. State won 93-75 at Florida LY. Gators have lot of good guards; Donovan improved his coaching staff in offseason this is going to be a good Florida team, but they're young up front.

Iowa State crushed Drake 91-43 LY; they're 6-3 in last nine series games, but lost two of last three visits here, winning 90-70 in last visit in 2009. Cyclones made 10-22 from arc in 86-77 win over Lehigh- they've got lot of talented newcomers, either JCs/transfers. Drake has four starters back from LY- his team took a trip to New Zealand/Australia last summer.

Southern Illinois lost to D-II Ohio Dominican, day before Panthers lost to Southern Indiana by 23; home team won Salukis' last seven games vs Saint Louis. Billikens lost last three visits here by 26-9-16 points. These teams didn't play LY. Saint Louis held Tennessee State under 30% from floor in its opener- they have very good set of guards.

Kansas is lot younger/thinner than usual; they lost four starters from its 35-3 team that went 14-2 in Big 12 but lost in Elite 8- two of its recruits are ineligible. Kentucky has three starters back from 29-9 team that was 10-6 in SEC and lost by point to UConn in national semis. Kentucky won its opener by 50 over Marist, but game was 45-36 at the half.

Road team won both Santa Clara-UCSB games last two years; Broncos won 79-68 in Thunderdome two years ago, lost 80-69 at home in LY's meeting. Santa Clara haa good guards, but seven of its 13 players are new to college ball. Broncos were 24-14 LY, 8-6 in WCC. Gauchos has four starters back from 18-14, 8-8 team. Orlando Johnson is one best players in country- UCSB has a senior-laden team.

Home side won all three Northern Colorado-Wyoming games; Bears won 67-53 LY in Greeley, but Bears lost four starters from 21-11 team that was 13-3 in Big Sky, losing to San Diego State in NCAAs. Wyoming's new coach is former Florida aide Shyatt, so they're going to play faster. Bears committed 20 turnovers, 29 fouls in home loss to New Mexico St.

Utah State won 10 of last 11 games vs Weber State, winning last four by 26-6-12-12 points; Aggies won three of last four visits here, winning by 6-19-6 points. Very young Utah State team beat BYU at home in first game. Weber State has four starters back plus injured star Lilliard from an 18-14 team- they're expected to be very good, win the Big Sky title.
