Ice picks: Sunday's best NHL bets
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Flyers at Florida Panthers (108, 5.5)

Don’t look now, but the Florida Panthers are contending for first place in the Southeast Division. In fact, they had sole possession of the lead for about 24 hours between Thursday and Friday (Washington retook it by one point after beating New Jersey).

Florida has won two in a row and has earned points in six straight games. The big reason for such success is a sudden scoring barrage that has the team up to 11th in the NHL in goals per game and fourth in power play conversions. The Panthers have scored 10 goals in their past two outings and have found the net at least twice on nine consecutive occasions.

Kris Versteeg joined the party with his first career hat trick in Thursday’s 5-2 win at Winnipeg. Versteeg now leads the squad in both points (17) and shots on goal (44).

The Flyers, meanwhile, also have 20 points through 15 games. They have earned points in five straight but have dropped two of their last three (one in overtime, one in a shootout).

    Pick: Panthers

Minnesota Wild at Anaheim Ducks (-132, 5)

Anaheim has been in brutal form since winning four of its first five games to start the season. Prior to Friday’s 4-3 win over Vancouver, the Ducks had lost six in a row nine of 10. They have not outscored an opponent by more than a goal since October 16, a span of 12 games.

“We gave them a little too much,” goalie Jonas Hiller said after holding off the Canucks. “They had lots of speed coming through the neutral zone and our defensemen had no chance to stand up or do anything. “At the end, we found a way. That’s definitely something we can build on and get the confidence that we can win against one the best teams in the league.”

Confidence? Hiller is sporting a disappointing 2.95 GAA and .903 save percentage. He has allowed 21 goals over his past six games.

Minnesota, meanwhile, lost at San Jose 3-1 on Thursday but has still won five of its last six contests.

    Pick: Wild

Preview: Flyers (8-4) at Panthers (7-4)

                Date: November 13, 2011 5:00 PM EDT

Kris Versteeg wasn't a perfect fit after the Philadelphia Flyers traded for him during last season's stretch run.

The Florida Panthers, though, couldn't be happier with how the left wing has meshed with his new teammates after acquiring him from the Flyers.

Coming off his first career hat trick, Versteeg looks to help the Panthers post their first seven-game point streak in two years Sunday when they host Philadelphia.

Acquired from Toronto on Feb. 14 for two draft picks, Versteeg had seven goals and 11 points in 27 regular-season games for the Flyers, who went just 11-9-7 after the deal and barely hung on for their first Atlantic Division title in five seasons. He was limited to one goal in 11 playoff games as Philadelphia was ousted in the second round.

While more attention was paid to their offseason moves of dealing Jeff Carter and captain Mike Richards and signing goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, a Flyers trade that went under the radar has helped Florida (8-4-3) post its best start since opening 10-1 with four ties 15 years ago.

The Panthers, 3-0-3 in their last six, picked up Versteeg on July 1 for two draft picks. The forward has team bests with eight goals and 17 points after scoring three times and recording a career high-tying four points in Thursday's 5-2 road win over Winnipeg.

"It hasn't just been one game," first-year coach Kevin Dineen said. "He's been really consistent and a good player for us all year."

So has Versteeg's former teammate in Chicago, defenseman Brian Campbell.

Acquired in June for Rostislav Olesz, Campbell has 10 of his team-best 14 assists on the power play, which is now among the league's best at 24.1 percent after ranking last (13.1 percent) a year ago.

The Panthers, whose last seven-game point streak was a 5-0-3 run Nov. 12-25, 2009, will face a Flyers team that's killed 19 of 20 penalties during its 3-0-2 stretch.

The one power-play goal Philadelphia (8-4-3) allowed in that span, however, came in its most recent contest and was costly. It let Tampa Bay tie Wednesday's game in the third period, and the Flyers went on to lose 2-1 in overtime.

Among the league's best with 3.80 goals per game, Philadelphia managed a season-low 15 shots as the Lightning employed a 1-3-1 defense that essentially brought the game to a standstill.

"That's not hockey in my book, but whatever," Flyers captain Chris Pronger said after returning from a six-game absence due to an eye injury.

The Flyers could get plenty more opportunities in this matchup as the Panthers surrender 33.0 shots per game, among the most in the NHL.

Florida, though, has been getting a solid effort in net from Jose Theodore, 3-0-2 with a 2.13 goals-against average in his last five starts.

Theodore is 7-0-1 with a 1.97 GAA in his last eight starts versus Philadelphia.

Bryzgalov also has been playing well, allowing seven goals in his past four games while going 3-0-1. He could make his first start versus the Panthers in a Flyers uniform after going 2-0-1 with a 1.58 GAA against them while with Phoenix.

This is the teams' first meeting of the season after Philadelphia won three of four in 2010-11, including both matchups in Sunrise, Fla. The Flyers are 4-1-1 on the road, facing a Panthers club which has lost its last three home games in shootouts.

Preview: Oilers (8-5) at Blackhawks (7-4)

                  Date: November 13, 2011 7:00 PM EDT

The Edmonton Oilers have stumbled a bit since posting six wins in a row for the first time in over nine years.

The Chicago Blackhawks seem to be clicking on all cylinders following a season-worst three-game skid.

Hoping to avoid a third consecutive defeat for the first time this season, the Oilers conclude a six-game road trip seeking a third straight win at the United Center on Sunday night.

Edmonton (9-5-2), which outscored opponents 17-6 during a six-game run Oct. 22-Nov. 3, has since dropped three of four. One night after falling 6-3 to Boston, the Oilers were shut out for the first time this season in a 3-0 loss to Detroit on Friday.

Former ********* Nikolai Khabibulin made 27 saves, surrendering a season-worst three goals.

"From winning to losing, it changes so quick," said Khabibulin, who dropped to 7-1-2. "We don't want to panic, but we've got to realize what was working for us and get back to that."

Edmonton has scored just one power-play goal in 16 opportunities on its current trip. Since opening their trek with a 3-0 win over Los Angeles, the Oilers have allowed 14 goals - just two fewer than their total through their first 11 games.

"It's not the direction that we want to be going," said left wing Taylor Hall, who has just one assist in seven road games. "We really want to finish this road trip at .500. If we do, I think that would be a successful road trip considering the teams that we've played. We want to get our game going the right way, the way we were playing when we were on our win streak."

Edmonton has won two in a row and three of five in Chicago, but has dropped nine of 12 overall between the teams.

Regrouping Sunday could prove difficult given the Blackhawks' (10-4-3) recent offensive outburst.

After an 0-2-1 stretch from Nov. 4-8, Chicago followed up its highest scoring output of the season - a 6-3 win at Columbus on Thursday - with a 4-1 victory over Calgary on Friday.

Forward Patrick Kane tallied his team-leading 17th point with an empty-netter for his second goal in as many nights. Patrick Sharp had a season-high three assists, while Dan Carcillo and Marian Hossa added two apiece.

Also coming up big were defensemen Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook, who each notched their first goals of the season. The Blackhawks, who rank near the top of the league with 3.18 goals per game, are 3-0-0 when Keith and Seabrook register a point in the same game.

"That's part of our game that needs to be there," Keith said. "I think it's important that we stay on that and help contribute.

"It's nice to get points and things like that but the main thing is just keeping plays alive and having good gaps and supporting our forwards."

Ray Emery spelled No. 1 goaltender Corey Crawford, turning away 24 shots to improve to 3-0-1. Despite the impressive display, Crawford, who's allowed 12 goals over his last three games, could be back in goal against the Oilers.

Crawford has gone 1-1-0 with a 1.52 goals-against average in two career starts against Edmonton.

Khabibulin, who spent four seasons in Chicago before signing with the Oilers in 2009-10, has since gone 2-2-0 with a 3.57 GAA versus his former team - surrendering four goals three times.

He'll look to slow down Kane and Blackhawks' captain Jonathan Toews, who have compiled a combined 12 goals and 15 assists in their last eight contests against Edmonton.

Preview: Wild (5-5) at Ducks (5-7)

                    Date: November 13, 2011 8:00 PM EDT

Just when the Anaheim Ducks thought they were beginning to turn their fortunes around, they learned they'll be without their top defenseman for awhile.

The Ducks will try to withstand an extended absence from Lubomir Visnovsky starting Sunday night when they host the Minnesota Wild.

Anaheim (6-7-3) is 2-6-3 since a four-game winning streak, but ended a six-game slide by beating Vancouver 4-3 on Friday, when Jonas Hiller allowed three third-period goals but also stopped 19 shots in the final 20 minutes. The victory came a day after the Ducks regrouped with a team meeting.

"We had to get that monkey off our back," coach Randy Carlyle said. "We've been floundering along here. We've played some good hockey in spurts, and we did the same thing (Friday), but we had enough of a cushion. It was pretty tense in some situations there, and everything was going against us. You could see the ice was tilted, and they were winning all the battles.

                    "Jonas Hiller stood tall."

The Ducks suffered a major blow in the final minute Friday, as Visnovsky broke his finger when he was hit in the right hand by a shot. He's been ruled out for roughly four weeks.

Visnovsky was the NHL's top scoring defenseman last season with 68 points, but he has just four and a minus-7 rating in 2011-12. He'd also been playing through a broken finger on his left hand for two weeks.

"Obviously it's not good to see one of our key players go down," fellow Ducks defenseman Luca Sbisa told the team's official website. "The other side is there's a big opportunity and one of us has to take it. I'm more than happy to take over that role."

Sbisa and journeyman Kurtis Foster are expected to see increased playing time with Visnovsky out. Sbisa has three assists this season after getting two goals and nine assists with a minus-11 rating in 2010-11.

Foster, a member of the Wild (8-5-3) from 2005-09, has played just three games after being acquired in a trade with Edmonton last summer for fellow blueliner Andy Sutton.

Hiller, who had an assist to go with his 38 saves Friday, made 23 saves as Teemu Selanne set up all of the Ducks' goals in a 3-2 win at Minnesota on Oct. 27.

The Wild are trying to avoid their first three-game skid of the season after falling 5-2 at Los Angeles on Saturday. They gave up the first five goals, including four in the second period.

Even in their last win, a 3-0 victory at Calgary on Tuesday, the Wild got outshot 41-26 but got bailed out by Niklas Backstrom's 41 saves.

"We played three bad games in a row,' Minnesota coach Mike Yeo said after Saturday's loss. "We thought that when we won five games in a row that we're there but we're not even close. Along the way we forgot what we had to put in to win hockey games. We got what we deserved."

Dany Heatley, who had an assist Saturday, leads Minnesota with five goals and 11 points after being acquired from San Jose in exchange for Martin Havlat last summer. The right wing had a point against the Ducks last month, matching his total from his previous four visits to Anaheim.

Preview: Islanders (4-6) at Canucks (7-8)

                      Date: November 13, 2011 9:00 PM EDT

The Vancouver Canucks have dealt with their share of struggles, though few teams have been playing worse than the New York Islanders.

After an up-and-down road trip, Vancouver begins a three-game homestand Sunday night against an Islanders squad which is winless on the road.

Vancouver (8-8-1) likely envisioned a better start after its run to the Stanley Cup finals last season. The Canucks have yet to put together more than two consecutive victories after finishing a 3-3-0 road trip with a 4-3 loss Friday in Anaheim.

Vancouver fell behind 4-0 after two periods, and a third-period rally in which it outshot Anaheim 22-2 fell short.

``In the third period, we played the way we should play and showed how good we can be,' said Daniel Sedin, who had two assists and is among the league leaders with 16. "In the first two periods, we weren't good enough. We should play the whole game like we did in the third period.'

Aaron Rome didn't help matters when he received a game misconduct and five-minute major for a hit on Anaheim's Devante Smith-Pelly, as Vancouver allowed two goals during the second-period penalty kill.

Rome likely will be considered a repeat offender when the league reviews the hit, which could lead to a suspension. The defenseman knocked Boston's Nathan Horton out of the finals with a hard hit in Game 3 and was suspended for the rest of the series.

Roberto Luongo allowed four goals on 19 shots Friday before Cory Schneider replaced him to start the third period, and it's unclear who will start this game. Luongo is 4-7-2 with one tie and a 3.00 goals-against average in his last 14 appearances against the Islanders, which drafted him fourth overall in 1997.

No matter who gets the nod, Vancouver seems to have a solid chance of bouncing back against struggling New York (4-6-3).

The Islanders are 1-5-3 in their last nine games after blowing a three-goal lead in a 4-3 overtime loss to Colorado on Thursday. The defense allowed 51 shots to reach goaltender Al Montoya, who made 47 saves but committed a high-sticking penalty in overtime which led to a power-play goal.

"When you get a couple goals scored on you, you tend to seize up and that's what we did," said Brian Rolston, who scored in the loss. "That's the time when we need to be confident and make confident plays with the puck. We didn't do that. That's something that needs to be stressed."

The loss dropped the Islanders to 0-3-2 on the road, marking the second time in three seasons they've lost their first five away from home.

New York had lost seven of eight in Vancouver before winning the last meeting there 5-2 on March 16, 2010, behind two goals and three assists from John Tavares.

He also scored in the Canucks' 4-3 shootout victory in the most recent matchup Jan. 11, when Daniel Sedin had an assist to give him two goals and seven assists during a six-game point streak versus the Islanders.

Daniel's twin brother, Henrik, has identical statistics against New York during that span.

North Carolina Tar Heels at N.C. Asheville Bulldogs (16)

North Carolina is back in action two days after taking care of Michigan State 67-55 in the Carrier Classic and covering the 8.5 points.

Pre-season All-American Harrison Barnes is off to a good start. The star sophomore drained five of 11 shots from the floor and scored a game-high 17 points. Carolina’s big front-court also produced, as John Henson and Tyler Zeller combined for 21 points and 13 rebounds.

N.C. Asheville opened its season on Friday night at N.C. State and lost 84-75. It should not have been that close, though, as the Wolfpack led 44-27 at the half and cruised the rest of the way without too much trouble. State was playing without star forward C.J. Leslie.

UNC beat Asheville 80-69 at home last season after taking a 13-point halftime advantage. In a 2008 game at Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels obliterated Asheville 116-48.

                              Pick: North Carolina

Rider Broncs at Pittsburgh Panthers (-21)

Pittsburgh is not taking its non-conference schedule lightly even though the team knows it has far more important games on its schedule.

“We still got to get a couple games under our belt just for everybody to understand their role, what they’re doing and how we’re going to play the rotation in general,” guard Ashton Gibbs said prior to Friday’s opener. “These first couple games are going to be key.”

The Panthers acted like it meant something, too, as they raced to a 47-26 halftime lead over Albany and prevailed 89-56. Gibbs scored 21 points and junior guard Tray Woodall erupted for a career-high 25 in addition to 10 assists.

Pittsburgh is off to a fine start. Rider…. Not so much. The Broncs got blown out 83-57 at Robert Morris on Friday.

These two teams faced each other last season at Pittsburgh with the Panthers seizing a 22-point lead midway through the second half before getting a 87-68 win.

                              Pick: Pittsburgh
