Sunday’s betting tips: Manning on fire in 4th

    Who’s hot

NFL: The under is 7-0 in the Dolphins’ last seven overall and 6-1 in the Redskins’ last seven overall.

NFL: The 49ers are 8-0-1 in their last nine overall and 5-0-1 in their last six home games.

NFL: The Chiefs are 5-1 ATS in their last six overall and 4-1 in their last five against the AFC.

NHL: The over is 3-0-1 in the Islanders’ last four road games and 5-1-1 in the Canucks’ last seven overall.

CBB: UNC-Wilmington is 12-3-1 ATS in its last 16 non-conference games.

CFL: Calgary is 4-1-1 ATS in its last six overall.

    Who’s not

NFL: The Colts are 0-5 ATS in their last five overall and 1-5 ATS in their last six home games.

NFL: The Eagles are 1-6 ATS in their last seven home games.

NFL: The Browns are 2-12-2 ATS in their last 16 overall and 0-6-2 in their last eight home games.

NHL: The Ducks are 1-6 in their last seven overall.

CBB: N.C. State is 3-12-1 in its last 16 overall dating back to last season.

CFL: Montreal is 0-6 ATS in its last six overall and 0-4 ATS in its last four home games.

    Key stat

121.7 – Eli Manning’s fourth-quarter quarterback rating this season. The New York Giants’ signal-caller has completed 68.7 percent of his passes in the final 15 minutes of games while tossing eight touchdowns and just two interceptions. In his career, Manning has led his team to victory 19 times when trailing or tied in the fourth quarter. He has done it five times already in 2011, including in three straight outings.

    Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

Manning could be limited as the Giants go up against San Francisco in a huge NFC showdown. Mario Manningham (knee) was a late addition to the injury report on Saturday and fellow wideout Hakeem Nicks (hamstring) is questionable. Manningham’s status is unknown and Nicks will be a game-time decision.

Carolina Panthers’ quarterback Cam Newton was also a late addition to the injury report. Newton is dealing with a sore shoulder but is expected to start at home against Tennessee.

    Biggest games on the slate

New England Patriots at New York Jets (-1, 47.5)

New Orleans Saints at Atlanta Falcons (1, 49.5)

Pittsburgh Steelers at Cincinnati Bengals (3, 41.5)

    Notable quotable

“We will never accept this kind of chronic losing. It’s an unwelcome visitor that we will not tolerate.” – Indianapolis Colts’ owner Jim Irsay via his favorite means of communicating—Twitter—after his team’s most recent loss to the Atlanta Falcons. If the “chronic losing” is ever going to come to an end, it could be on Sunday. The Colts host a 2-6 Jaguars’ squad that is 0-4 on the road this season.

    Tips and notes

The Blackhawks are a -163 home favorite against Edmonton, and for good reason. Chicago has won two in a row and both victories on Thursday and Friday came by three goals apiece. The Oilers, on the other hand, lost by three goals on both Thursday and Friday (6-3 at Boston and 3-0 at Detroit). In the last two head-to-head meetings between these two teams in 2010-11, the Blackhawks outscored Edmonton by a combined 9-1.

The Arizona Wildcats have already played two relatively tough games heading into Sunday’s home date with Ball State, for which they are a 14-point favorite. Arizona is 2-0 but 0-2 ATS, while Ball State is getting ready for its season opener. Look for Jordin Mayes to see plenty of action for the Wildcats. He took just seven shots in 18 minutes against Valparaiso before logging 27 minutes against Duquesne while going six of 10 from the floor and four of seven from downtown for a game-high 19 points.

Kansas City is the next opponent for the ongoing Tim Tebow saga. Defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel, however, has made sure that the focus is not squarely on the most hotly-debated player in the NFL. “If you disregard those guys,” Crennel said of Denver running backs Willis McGahee and Knowshon Moreno, “and concentrate on Tebow, those guys will hurt you. You have to prepare for the two-back offense and you have to prepare for the shotgun offense. We’ve been trying to do our best to give our guys a look at both of them.”

Canadian Bacon: CFL Divisional Semifinals preview and picks
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Montreal Alouettes (-6, 55)

The Alouettes, who have lost their last three games, know that in order to beat the Tiger-Cats they will need to slow down RB and former teammate Avon Cobourne. In two losses to Hamilton this year, Cobourne rushed for 169 yards. In both wins against the Tabbies, Montreal limited Cobourne to a meager 40 yards.

Hamilton, which has been shuffling players of late, will go with Kevin Glenn as starting QB. But one can wonder how long head-coach Marcel Bellefeuille will keep him on the field before going with Quinton Porter. In any case, the Tiger-Cats don’t have much depth in their group of receivers, where the biggest threat comes from Chris Williams.

The Alouettes have no doubt on the identity of their starting QB. Anthony Calvillo has led that team to three consecutive Grey Cups, game winning the last two. Without LT Josh Bourke, the Als OL seems a lot more fragile. Jeff Perrett, who replaces him, is more efficient on the right side and he will need some support from FB Kerry Carter or even Ryan Bomben to contain the attacks coming from DE Justin Hickman (13 sacks), Stevie Baggs and DT Eddie Steele.

Montreal defensive coordinator Tim Burke, a former Alouette, knows the subtleties of his opponent’s offense and has found some very potent defensive schemes of his own to slow it down.

Playoff experience, home-field advantage (although it will take more than the some 30,000 expected at the Big O to really disturb Kevin Glenn) and the mastermind of Marc Trestman all point in favor of the Alouettes. But don’t be surprised to see the Tiger-Cats make it interesting until the final whistle.

      Pick: Montreal

Calgary Stampeders at Edmonton Eskimos (-1.5, 51.5)

Both teams finished the regular season with identical records of 11-7, but since the Eskimos took the head-to-head series they are hosting this new episode of the Battle of Alberta.

Drew Tate took over Henry Burris’ job and has shown some very impressive things over the last few games, but he must now prove that he can handle playoff pressure. With Nik Lewis, Ken-Yon Rambo, Johnny Forzani and Romby Bryant, he has the personnel to pick up big gains through the air. RB Jon Cornish gains an average of 7.3 yards each time he runs, the best in that category amongst all those who had 50 carries or more this year.

On special teams, speedster Larry Taylor can change the course of close game on a single punt or kickoff return. The Stampeders’ defense will need to show more poise than it did against Winnipeg. This said, the Stampeders have kept a very good record on the road (6-3) and they know how to deal with a hostile crowd, even in place like Edmonton.

RB Jerome Messam (lower body injury) has practiced over the last few days and should be in the starting lineup, making the Eskimos attack only more threatening. In the past when Messam has enjoyed good rushing games against the Stampeders, the Eskimos have usually emerged as winners. The Stampeders are vulnerable against the run, having allowed 23 rushing touchdowns this season, more than any other team.

QB Ricky Ray can also rely on some very potent receivers with Fred Stamps, Adarius Bowman and Jason Barnes, all more than capable of causing problems to the Stampeders’ secondary. The OL will be without RT Greg Wojt (ankle). On defense, LB J.C. Sherrit (ankle) remains doubtful. On the brighter side, DE Greg Peach (knee) should be back in action.

      Pick: Edmonton

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Sunday's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Flyers at Florida Panthers (108, 5.5)

Don’t look now, but the Florida Panthers are contending for first place in the Southeast Division. In fact, they had sole possession of the lead for about 24 hours between Thursday and Friday (Washington retook it by one point after beating New Jersey).

Florida has won two in a row and has earned points in six straight games. The big reason for such success is a sudden scoring barrage that has the team up to 11th in the NHL in goals per game and fourth in power play conversions. The Panthers have scored 10 goals in their past two outings and have found the net at least twice on nine consecutive occasions.

Kris Versteeg joined the party with his first career hat trick in Thursday’s 5-2 win at Winnipeg. Versteeg now leads the squad in both points (17) and shots on goal (44).

The Flyers, meanwhile, also have 20 points through 15 games. They have earned points in five straight but have dropped two of their last three (one in overtime, one in a shootout).

        Pick: Panthers

Minnesota Wild at Anaheim Ducks (-132, 5)

Anaheim has been in brutal form since winning four of its first five games to start the season. Prior to Friday’s 4-3 win over Vancouver, the Ducks had lost six in a row nine of 10. They have not outscored an opponent by more than a goal since October 16, a span of 12 games.

“We gave them a little too much,” goalie Jonas Hiller said after holding off the Canucks. “They had lots of speed coming through the neutral zone and our defensemen had no chance to stand up or do anything. “At the end, we found a way. That’s definitely something we can build on and get the confidence that we can win against one the best teams in the league.”

Confidence? Hiller is sporting a disappointing 2.95 GAA and .903 save percentage. He has allowed 21 goals over his past six games.

Minnesota, meanwhile, lost at San Jose 3-1 on Thursday but has still won five of its last six contests.

        Pick: Wild

North Carolina Tar Heels at N.C. Asheville Bulldogs (16)

North Carolina is back in action two days after taking care of Michigan State 67-55 in the Carrier Classic and covering the 8.5 points.

Pre-season All-American Harrison Barnes is off to a good start. The star sophomore drained five of 11 shots from the floor and scored a game-high 17 points. Carolina’s big front-court also produced, as John Henson and Tyler Zeller combined for 21 points and 13 rebounds.

N.C. Asheville opened its season on Friday night at N.C. State and lost 84-75. It should not have been that close, though, as the Wolfpack led 44-27 at the half and cruised the rest of the way without too much trouble. State was playing without star forward C.J. Leslie.

UNC beat Asheville 80-69 at home last season after taking a 13-point halftime advantage. In a 2008 game at Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels obliterated Asheville 116-48.

            Pick: North Carolina

Rider Broncs at Pittsburgh Panthers (-21)

Pittsburgh is not taking its non-conference schedule lightly even though the team knows it has far more important games on its schedule.

“We still got to get a couple games under our belt just for everybody to understand their role, what they’re doing and how we’re going to play the rotation in general,” guard Ashton Gibbs said prior to Friday’s opener. “These first couple games are going to be key.”

The Panthers acted like it meant something, too, as they raced to a 47-26 halftime lead over Albany and prevailed 89-56. Gibbs scored 21 points and junior guard Tray Woodall erupted for a career-high 25 in addition to 10 assists.

Pittsburgh is off to a fine start. Rider…. Not so much. The Broncs got blown out 83-57 at Robert Morris on Friday.

These two teams faced each other last season at Pittsburgh with the Panthers seizing a 22-point lead midway through the second half before getting a 87-68 win.

            Pick: Pittsburgh

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

                  13) Second year in a row, Boise State lost its first game of year when they missed an easy FG on the last play of the game. TCU went to Boise and upset the Broncos 36-35. Good news for other BCS contenders.

                  12) Freshman QB Connor Halliday, who hadn't played since September 10, came off the bench on a cold, rainy night and completed 27-36 passes for 494 yards, four TDs as Washington State (+12) upset Arizona State 37-27. Coach Paul Wulff is rebuilding the Coogs and they're a lot better than they've been in years, at 4-6. Second straight horrible loss for ASU, who lost 29-28 at UCLA last week, missing a FG on the last play.

                  11) Texas A&M lost its third straight game, two of them in OT- Aggies are 5-5, 1-4 in games decided by four or less points or in OT. They could easily be 9-1, but now they're not even bowl eligible yet.

                  10) Same thing for Miami Hurricanes; they've lost five games, none by more than eight points. Miami lost 23-19 at Florida State, just the second time they've lost in their last six visits to Tallahassee.

                  9) Texas Tech beat the Sooners in Norman three weeks ago, then stopped playing, losing their next three games by combined score of 159-33; thats an average loss of 53-11. How can a team fall apart that quickly?

                  8) Baylor was down 24-3 after three quarters at Kansas, which would've been just a horrific loss, but Robert Griffin III rallied the Bears to a 31-30 win in OT, giving them six wins with three home games remaining. Losing to an awful Jayhawk team would've been hideous. Kansas went for two points and the win in OT, a ploy that usually fails.

                  7) NC State has now failed to cover its last 11 games as a road favorite, as the Wolfpack lost 14-10 at Boston College.

                  6) How does the Big East get a BCS slot? Only three of their eight teams have winning records, and one of those is Rutgers. Cincinnati is in first at 3-1, a half-game ahead of West Virginia, which beat the Bearcats 24-21 at Nippert Stadium Saturday. On a neutral field, Cincinnati would be a dog of 19 points to LSU, 16 to Georgia; they'd be pick 'em with Baylor. Thats using the Gold Sheet's power ratings, which are accurate.

                  5) How come every time I turn on my TV, I see Matt Millen? This guy is one of the worst executives in the history of sports, pro or college, and no matter what sport, but he works on ESPN, he works on NFL Network, like he invented football. Totally baffling.

                  4) Florida Gators are 1-5 in their last six games, with the only win a 26-21 escape job over Vanderbilt. Gators scored 12 or less points in four of the five losses. Next up is I-AA Furman, so Florida will be bowl eligible, but this is their worst team in 20+ years. Urban Meyer knew when to scoot.

                  3) LSU-Alabama took a lot out of each other last week; neither team beat the spread Saturday. Crimson Tide won a 24-7 snoozer at Mississippi St, while the Bayou Bengals pulled away from Western Kentucky, 41-9. The prospects of an LSU-Bama rematch were helped a lot Saturday when both Boise State and Stanford lost.

                  2) We talked earlier this week about how UAB, Arizona, UNLV were all road favorites, despite being horrible teams. Arizona/UNLV both lost on the up, while UAB rallied back from 35-17 down in 4th quarter to beat a truly terrible Memphis team, 41-35.

                  1) Andrew Luck is a really good college QB, no doubt, and he'll win the Heisman Trophy probably, but when I hear people say he's the best NFL prospect since John Elway, I want to laugh. No way is he that good. You are talking about 28 years of prospects. Media types get all carried away because the kid goes to a good academic school. Its laughable.
