Saturday’s betting tips: Bettors fading Penn State

    Who’s hot

NCAAF: Arkansas is 20-7 against the spread in its last 27 home games.

NCAAB: Seton Hall is 5-1 against the spread in its last six home games.

NHL: Pittsburgh has won six of its last eight.

NHL: San Jose is 10-1 in its last 11 games against Phoenix.

    Who’s not

NCAAF: The under is 0-8 in West Virginia’s last eight overall.

NCAAF: Texas A&M is 1-7 against the spread in its last eight.

NCAAB: Washington is 2-6 against the spread in its last eight overall.

NHL: Winnipeg has dropped four straight games.

NHL: Ottawa is 3-7 in its last 10 games in Toronto.

    Key stat

94.2 – The Oregon Ducks and Stanford Cardinal average 94.2 points per game combined. Stanford sits third in the nation putting up 48.2 points while Oregon checks in at fifth at 46 points per contest. Oddsmakers currently have a 69.5-point total on the board for Saturday night’s date between the two clubs.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Jaxon Shipley, Texas Longhorns – Shipley has been ruled out of Saturday’s game against Missouri after injuring his right knee Oct. 29 against Kansas. The wideout tops the team with 33 catches and three touchdowns and sits second with 438 receiving yards.
Texas receiver Jaxon Shipley (knee) will not play against Missouri tomorrow.

    Game of the day

Oregon Ducks at Stanford Cardinal (-3.5, 68)

    Notable quotable

"Due to multiple threats made against Assisant Coach Mike McQueary, the University has decided it would be in the best interest of all for Assisant Coach McQueary not to be in attendance at Saturday's Nebraska game," – Penn State athletic department in a statement. McQueary was also placed on administrative leave Friday afternoon.

    Notes and tips

Almost 70 percent of *********** Consensus bettors are backing Nebraska as the Cornhuskers head into what’s sure to be an emotional matchup at Penn State Saturday afternoon. As of Friday night, you could find Penn State anywhere from +3 to +4, while the total was holding at 43 points.

New Jersey Devils left wing Ilya Kovalchuk has been ruled out for both ends of a home-and-home series against the Washington Capitals. Kovalchuk, who is nursing a muscle pull in his leg, will miss games on Friday and Saturday, coach Peter DeBoer detailed. “It's lingering," DeBoer told ESPNNewYork.com. "But it's definitely getting better. He'll be back real soon." Kovalchuk, 28, suffered the injury during the team's 4-3 shootout win over the Atlantic Division rival Philadelphia Flyers on Nov. 3. Signed to a 15-year, $100 million deal prior to last season, Kovalchuk collected two goals, seven assists and two penalty minutes in 11 games in the 2011-12 campaign.

Oddsmakers are being forced to adjust their Australian Open odds with Tiger Woods on the prowl. After Wood surged to the top of the leaderboard with Friday’s second-round 5-under 67 some books moved him from a +150 favorite to +110. “I really played well,” Woods told reporters. “Even though I shot 5 under, it felt it could have been 8 or 9 deep.”

Manny Pacquiao weighed in at 143 pounds Friday for his bout against Juan Manuel Marquez this Saturday night. Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38 KOs), at 143 pounds, is the lightest he’s been in two and a half years. Marquez (53-5-1, 39 KOs) tipped the scales at 142 pounds – his heaviest weight ever. Saturday’s bout is the third meeting between these fighters. Pacquiao earned a split decision win in 2008 while their first meeting in 2004 was a draw. Pacquiao is putting his WBO welterweight title on the line in Las Vegas Saturday as a -1000 favorite.

      Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Dolphins are 6-29 vs spread in last 35 games as a home favorite.

-- Giants covered 23 of their last 30 games as an underdog.

-- Cleveland is 2-14 against the spread in its last 16 games.

-- Lions are 8-1-1 vs spread in their last ten road games.

-- Buffalo covered seven of last nine games as a road underdog.

-- Under is 12-3 in Washington's last fifteen games.

      ******************

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a fall Saturday

      13) Someone explain to me why Jerry Sandusky isn't in prison.

      12) Cool setting in San Diego for the outdoor game with Michigan State and North Carolina; game was sponsored by Quicken Loans, owned by the guy who owns the Cleveland Cavaliers and is a huge Michigan State alumnus. He tried to hire Tom Izzo to coach the Cavaliers in 2010.

      11) Game was played on the USS Carl Vinson, a huge battleship with a flight deck of 4.5 acres. But who was Carl Vinson? He served fifty years as a Congressman from Georgia, and was a big supporter of the military. Guy lived until he was 98.

      10) Fallout from NBA lockout: Mike Breen was broadcasting Duke game last night on ESPNU, instead of an NBA game, like he usually would on a Friday night. Belmont is pretty good; we'll hear from them in March. On the flip side, Doris Burke's voice goes through me worse than fingernails on a chalkboard. Got reacquainted with the mute button last night.

      9) Duke has three brothers on their team, the Plumlees. Its first time since 1958 a Division I hoop team has three brothers (siblings) on it.

      8) Love watching games at Cameron Indoor just to see the reactions of the visiting coaches as their team gets screwed relentlessly by the officials. Its kind of like the swallows returning to Capistrano every year.

      7) Phillies gave Jonathan Papelbon $50M for four years, as Red Sox are further taken apart. Next thing I expect the Marlins to announce that they acquired the Green Monster to put in their new ballpark.

      6) There is good news somewhere!!!!! Nationals' catcher Wilson Ramos was rescued in the Venezuelan mountains and is apparently OK after he was kidnapped during the week. Pro ballplayers are targets of evil down there, because they have so much more money than everyone else.

      5) Eldrick Woods was leading after two rounds of the Australian Open (it is summer there), but Saturday wasn't so good; Australian John Senden shot a 63, Woods ballooned to a 75, and he trails by six strokes after the third round of play. He may never win again. Seriously.

      4) Pretty cool tripleheader at Mohegan Sun Friday, so cool that we may attend next year. Three D-I college basketball games, all involving teams from the Nutmeg State. Yale beat Central Connecticut, Fairfield beat Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart beat the Hartford Hawks.

      3) Duke hung on for dear life against Belmont, winning 77-76 over a very good Bruin squad. Belmont was a 13-seed LY; this score has to improve their seed by at least one slot, assuming their regular season is similar to what they did LY, when they dominated the Atlantic Sun. Belmont made only 6-19 from the arc, and still lost by a point. Good team.

      2) Loyola Marymount went to the LA Sports Arena and handed it to UCLA, beating Bruins 69-58. Shocking score, really surprising. LMU has a fine coach in Max Good, but this wasn't close in the second half. Won't be long before Larry Brown is declaring interest in the UCLA job.

First time LMU beat UCLA since 1941. 19-freakin'-41.

      1) Friday was 11-11-11. Happens once in a lifetime. I'm trying real hard to believe that our world is not going crazy, but there is evidence to the contrary.

Hockey Night In Canada: NHL betting preview
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa Senators at Toronto Maple Leafs (-170, 5.5)

With fans waiting for the other shoe to drop, Toronto still owns first place in the Northeast Division as the Maple Leafs prepare to host the up-and-down Senators at the Air Canada Centre.

                Phil-ling the void

Perhaps the sign of a great team is one that can rely on its stars to get them out of a jam and keep things moving forward. If early indications mean anything, the Maple Leafs and Phil Kessel are on their way.

A modest two-game losing streak could have snowballed Thursday night against the recharged St. Louis Blues. Yet, Kessel scored, pushed his league-leading point total to 23, and Toronto escaped with a 3-2 win and everything was back on track.

Kessel now has 12 goals and has at least one point in 13 of the last 16 games.

                A bump in the road

Things were skating along swimmingly for the Senators until captain Daniel Alfredsson suffered a concussion. Without their leader, Ottawa headed into Friday’s tilt with the Buffalo Sabres on a 1-3-1 stretch and lost a 3-2 gut-wrencher to the Rangers at home Wednesday night.

Prior to Friday, Alfredsson had four goals and seven points, but as all Senators fans know, he brings much more to the table than his statistics and it shows without him.

                An Ivy League find

Ben Scrivens? Really? Indeed, the Maple Leafs deserve credit for snagging this undrafted goaltender out of Cornell. He has filled in admirably and has been able to spell Jonas Gustavsson while he’s battled a bit of a slump.

The absence of starter James Reimer hasn't damaged the Maple Leafs' standing and for as long as this ride goes, Scrivens will take it. He is 2-1 with a .900 save percentage and a 3.27 GAA.

He notched the win over the Blues Thursday night.

                History

The two rivals have split the last eight meetings, with Ottawa notching a 3-2 win on Oct. 30, as Kaspars Daugavins scored the winner at 7:08 of the third period. Two of the last three installments, and three of the last five in the series, have gone over.

Calgary Flames at Colorado Avalanche (-135, 5.5)

There’s a long way to go, but the Northwest is shaping up to be a bear of a division, and the Flames and Avalanche may get left behind. Calgary is offensively challenged and Colorado is defensively challenged, so there will certainly be a clash of styles in this nightcap.

                Plenty of pucks

If at first you don't succeed, shoot, shoot again. Colorado needed plenty of opportunities to break a four-game winless streak Thursday, but they did get it done.

The Avalanche fired 51 shots on net -- and topped 50 for the first time in nearly 10 seasons - as they outlasted the New York Islanders, 4-3, on home ice.

Hard to believe, but it was just Colorado's second home win of the season.

                Little fire from the Flames

Calgary only has 30 total goals heading into Friday's game with the Blackhawks, so it's been a season-long struggle to say the least. But, in the five games leading into the tilt in Chicago, it's been particularly dry.

The Flames managed two goals or less in four of those games, with only a 4-1 breakout win versus Detroit to hang their hat on.

Rene Bourque has five goals, and Alex Tanguay has eight assists. Surely, though, they expect more out of Jarome Iginla, who takes just four goals into the Blackhawks game.

                New look in net

There was some question of just how Colorado's new-look goaltending tandem would shake out. And despite the team's standing, one would have to think that the organization is pleased with the efforts of Semyon Varlamov and Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

Varlamov has been the horse, going 5-6-1 with a .900 save percentage and a 3.00 GAA. He has the team's lone shutout.

But Giguere is still hanging on. The veteran is making the most of his chances. He beat the Islanders Thursday to improve to 3-1, with a .920 and a 2.18 GAA. Clearly, there are worse combos out there than this one.

                History

The Flames have won the last seven games in this series, dating back to Nov. 9, 2010, including two this season already. Five of the last seven games in this rivalry have gone over.

Ice picks: Saturday's best NHL bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Winnipeg Jets at Columbus Blue Jackets (-130, 5.5)

Somehow, Columbus Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel still has a job, but you have to think another loss at home might be the last straw.

Columbus dropped its third straight game Thursday, falling 6-3 to Chicago. After the game, the club sent defenseman Kris Russell to the Blues in exchange for Nikita Nikitin. The Jackets also picked up Mark Letestu from the Penguins Wednesday for a fourth-round pick.

But minor deals like these aren’t going to be enough to turn things around. Steve Mason has been dreadful between the pipes and may be the next guy packing his bags.

"I'm trying to get these guys to believe,” Arniel told reporters. “Hammer on the things they're doing well. It's real easy to just keep criticizing them, showing them all the crap that's maybe happening. We've done that. We've got to get these guys believing in themselves personally, doing their job, then they have to start believing as a team. If we do things the right way and play for each other, good things will happen."

                  Not buying it, coach.

                  Pick: Jets

Tampa Bay Lightning at St. Louis Blues (-130, 5.5)

The Lightning ruffled some feathers earlier this week by refusing to break their 1-3-1 defensive formation while the Flyers had the puck in their own end, which resulted in a whole lot of standing around.

It may not have been pretty, but Guy Boucher’s system helped the Lightning earn a 2-1 overtime win over the top offensive team in the league.

Meanwhile, Ken Hitchcock already seems to be making a big difference in St. Louis. The Blues dropped a 3-2 decision to the Leafs on Thursday, but dominated the final two periods of play and ended up outshooting Toronto 40-22.

“It’s hard to fault the effort in the second and third and the overtime,” Hitchcock told reporters. “It’s hard to fault anything there. But the first period for me was an alarm bell. That’s something we have to talk about tomorrow, address and change. If we want to be a good team, we can’t have those periods.”

So far so good for Hitchcock's Blues. We'll take a flier on them here.

                  Pick: Blues

Fordham Rams at Syracuse Orange (-26, N/A)

Syracuse heads into its home opener with high expectations – the Orange check in at No. 5 in the AP and the USA Today/ESPN Coaches polls. And for good reason.

They did lose Ricky Jackson (who picked up All-Big East Second Team honors), but the rest of the club remains relatively intact from last season. Sophomore big men Fab Melo and center Baye Moussa Keita hope to ease the loss of Jackson while Kris Joseph tries to build upon a solid but not spectacular season that saw him average 14.3 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.

Syracuse opens the doors to Fordham Saturday and the Rams are pretty pumped up for this one. Fordham returns eight players from last year but this club has a long way to go. AP picked them to finish last in the A-10.

“When I scheduled this game, I wanted it to be our first game because it could be a great point of reference for the rest of the year,” Fordham coach Tom Pecora told reporters. “Not only playing a top-five team, but the environment that we are going to play in. So after you’ve been in that environment, you shouldn’t be getting rattled much the rest of the year, because you’ve been exposed to worse.”

Hard to eat this type of chalk in the first game of the season, but the Rams are in over their heads here.

                        Pick: Orange

Northern Iowa Panthers at Old Dominion Monarchs (-4, N/A)

It looks as though Old Dominion will have a huge part of its team in the lineup Saturday.

The team’s leading scorer, Kent Bazemore, underwent surgery over the summer to repair a stress fracture in his foot but is about a month ahead of schedule in his recovery. The Monarchs are going to need him too as they have just two returning starters.

"I think Kent is physically catching up," coach Blaine Taylor told reporters. "I think his conditioning and his rhythm are catching up. I think mentally he's real steady. He has a certain calm about understanding the situation he's in and not overreacting to the fact that maybe he's not in as good a shape and maybe he's not quite where he could be yet.”

Bazemore played six minutes in an exhibition game last week, so it might be a stretch to expect his best effort Saturday. The 6-foot-5 senior averaged 12.3 points per game last season and should at least give the Monarchs an emotional boost.

                        Pick: Monarchs
