Thursday's betting tips: Houston owns Tulane

    Who’s hot

NCAAF: Houston is 8-0 ATS in its last eight games against Tulane.

NHL: The under is 8-2 in the Blues’ last 10 home games.

NHL: The over is 7-1 in San Jose’s last eight home games.

    Who’s not

NCAAF: Virginia Tech is 1-7 ATS in its last eight games.

NHL: Florida is 5-12 in its last 17 road games.

NHL: The Kings are 1-5 in their last six games.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

The Bruins won't have forward Daniel Paille when they host Edmonton on Thursday. Paille underwent facial surgery on Wednesday after taking a slap shot in the face in Monday’s win over the Islanders. Team officials said Paille will be listed as day-to-day following the surgery to repair his broken nose and facial lacerations.

    Key stat

86.3 – That’s how many rushing yards Virginia Tech gives up per game, good for seventh nationally. Still, defensive coordinator Bud Foster made personnel changes this week to get more speed in the lineup, hoping to slow down a Georgia Tech option attack that averages 328 rushing yards.

    Game of the day

No. 9 Virginia Tech Hokies at No. 19 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (1, 49.5)

    Notable quotable

"I'm really looking forward to having a chance to go out and put better play on film and just go out and be successful. It was overwhelming at first and it's slowly died down and now I kind of feel like I'm in the middle of the season like I should be." -- Raiders QB Carson Palmer, who’s thrown three TDs and six INTs in six quarters of play. Oakland is a 7-point dog at San Diego on the NFL Network’s Thursday Night Football.

    Notes and tips

No. 15 South Carolina is expected to have QB Connor Shaw back for its Saturday home game against Florida. He suffered a concussion in last week’s 44-28 loss to Arkansas when he was sacked by Jake Bequette. Shaw lay motionless on the field for a few minutes after the vicious hit but eventually was able to walk off the field. The Gamecocks are favored by 3.5 points over the Gators, who snapped a four-game skid with a 26-21 win over Vanderbilt last week.

The reeling Blackhawks look to get back on track at woeful Columbus on Thursday. Chicago has dropped three straight by a combined score of 14-6. They were shut 3-0 Tuesday in St. Louis in a listless effort. "We were sloppy (and) we didn't move our feet," captain Jonathan Toews said. "We just didn't have the effort. Our legs weren't moving out there. We just have to get rid of that laziness, play harder and help each other out there. You don't key on past games but you have to learn from them and learn from them fast."

Explosive Chargers RB Ryan Mathews has not suffered any setbacks in coming back from his groin injury, and is expected to start Thursday’s home game against the Raiders. He’ll share duties with bruising RB Mike Tolbert. San Diego WR Malcom Floyd (hip) will miss his second straight game. For the Raiders, RB Darren McFadden (foot) is not expected to play, leaving Michael Bush as the workhorse.

      Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Highest-rated primetime TV shows last week........

      1) NBC 22.1 Ravens-Steelers Sunday Night Football wins the week.

      2) CBS 20.0 LSU-Alabama—Strong showing for well-hyped college game.

      3) CBS 19.7 NCIS—Star Mark Harmon once played QB for UCLA.

      4) ABC 16.3 Dancing with the Stars—have never seen this program.

      5) CBS 16.0 Big Bang Theory—Hopefully it’s a better show than its commercials make it look.

      6) FOX 15.7 The OT—NFL postgame show after the 4:15 games, which had lot of drama this week.

      **************

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud........

      13) Mets apparently have almost no interest in re-signing Jose Reyes and may even be discussing trading David Wright. Either way, they need to reduce ticket prices at the same rate they’re reducing their payroll ($55M off the books this winter).

They were gifted with a brand-new $850M stadium two years ago and now treat their fans like they’re the Pirates? Not good.

      12) Saw my first Christmas commercial on November 7. Pretty soon they’ll be on during the World Series.

      11) Ole Miss paid Houston Nutt a $6M buyout when they fired him; the guy had consecutive bad seasons, after going 9-4 in each of his first two seasons coaching the Rebels. How much money do these schools have that they can just write a $6M check to a guy they’re getting rid of. Did Nutt suddenly become incompetent? He was 9-4 two years ago.

      10) Search committee for the new Ole Miss coach is being headed by Archie Manning and an Executive VP at FedEx; the coach is going to be hired before the new AD, instead of hiring an AD and letting him pick the coach. Not the normal way of doing things, but recruiting is such that they need the new coach in place quickly.

      9) Eagles’ play Monday night was disturbing in that their receivers just seem so careless with the ball in their hands. The fumbled punt return near the end of the first half showed an almost total disregard for ball security. No one wins turning the ball over.

      8) In their last five games (1-4), Florida Gators have been outscored 76-20 in the second half. In their last four games, Tennessee Vols have been outscored 59-0 after halftime. With Tennessee, think its lack of depth; with Florida, it could very well be coaching adjustments, or lack thereof.

      7) Kid named Derrick Brodus is a student at Tennessee who is a walk-on kicker, but doesn’t dress for games; he was on his couch watching TV at 6:10 Saturday, when he got a phone call from the Tennessee coaches, telling him to be ready for a police escort to the stadium.

Vols’ kicker had gotten hurt during pre-game practice, so they needed him to kick in the game against Middle Tennessee State. An hour later, and Brodus was in uniform on the field at Neyland Stadium, kicking three PATs and a FG for Tennessee.

      6) Road team won last five Miami-Florida State games. Underdog covered nine of last ten series games, winning eight of last nine SU.

      5) If you like golf, the Australian Open is on the Golf Channel this week; airs from 8pm to 1am, eastern time.

      4) ESPN can be really annoying when they put their mind to it; they are doing a weekly poll of Heisman Trophy voters and do updates like it’s an actual game or something. I’m guessing the segments are well-sponsored and they make money off it, but does anyone care?

      3) Arizona and UNLV both are having terrible football seasons, but both are somehow road favorites this week, which tells you how amazingly pathetic Colorado and New Mexico are. Rebels were a 41-point underdog Saturday; now they’re a road favorite?

      2) 22-year German guy won $8.7 at the World Series of Poker. Its about time they legalized online poker in this country, so an American would have a better shot at winning these events. Kid I know who is a poker pro moved from Philly to Malta to continue his poker playing. Shouldn’t have to do that.

      1) Nebraska-Penn State game Saturday will be very strange to watch; last home game for Joe Paterno, who started coaching there when I was 6. I'm 51 now. Too bad its not under happier circumstances.

Ice picks: Thursday's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Maple Leafs at St. Louis Blues (-160, 5.5)

Under new coach Ken Hitchcock, the Blues blanked Chicago 3-0 on Tuesday as they killed all nine Blackhawks’ power plays.

Goalie Jaroslav Halak earned his first shutout since last season’s finale against Nashville, stopping 29 shots.

"When a coaching change happened so fast, we just needed to probably look in the mirror and ask yourself if that was the best you have," Halak said. "Everybody did their best."

Now they welcome a Toronto club that has scored one goal in its past two games, including a 5-1 loss to Florida on Tuesday.

“I threw a couple of pucks away on the power play, and I think we’re all pressing and there’s no need for it,” Leafs winger Clarke MacArthur said.

The under is 8-2 in St. Louis’ last 10 home games, and 5-1 in the Blues’ last six overall. The under is also 5-2 in the last seven Maple Leafs-Blues games in St. Louis.

        Pick: Under

Vancouver Canucks at Los Angeles Kings (-114, 5)

Having won once in their last six tries, the Kings entertain a rested Canucks squad that scored on five of six power-play chances in a 6-2 win at Chicago.

That victory wrapped up a 2-2 road trip for Vancouver, which has been inconsistent following last season’s trip to the Stanley Cup finals.

But the Canucks enjoy facing Los Angeles. They’ve won five of the past seven meetings.

Vancouver has been off since Sunday. In their last 26 games on three or more days of rest, the Canucks are 21-5.

        Pick: Canucks
