Wednesday’s betting tips: Books react to Penn State scandal

    Who’s hot

NCAAF: Miami (Ohio) has covered the number in four of the last five.

NCAAB: The over is 9-3 in Arizona’s last 12 overall.

NCAAB: Akron is 13-3 against the spread in its last 16.

NHL: The New York Rangers have won four straight.

    Who’s not

NCAAF: The over is 1-7 in Temple’s last eight.

NCAAB: The Liberty Flames are riding a 1-6 slump against the spread.

NCAAB: Duquesne is 1-8 against the spread in its last nine overall.

NHL: Tampa Bay is 1-4 in its last five home games against Philadelphia.

    Key stat

12.8 – The Temple Owls rank fourth nationally allowing only 12.8 points per game. However, they were lit up in a 35-31 loss to Ohio as a 4-point favorite in their last game.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Darren McFadden, Oakland Raiders – McFadden has been ruled out for the second straight game and will be on the sidelines when the Raiders clash with the San Diego Chargers Thursday. McFadden suffered a sprained right foot in the first quarter against Kansas City on Oct. 23 and sat out Sunday's home loss to Denver. Michael Bush will make his second straight start. He rushed for 96 yards on 19 carries and had a touchdown catch against the Broncos. McFadden has rushed for 614 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 5.4 yards per carry this season. Oakland and San Diego are in a three-way tie with Kansas CIty for first place in the AFC West with 4-4 records. The Raiders are set as 7-point underdogs at San Diego.

    Game of the day

Miami (Ohio) at Temple (-13, 44)

    Notable quotable

“The ability to spread ‘em out and run spread-option football...that’s not something I was able to come right in here and do because that’s not what was in place here. I wanted to take advantage of the best abilities I had at Temple when I got here, and right now we’re trying to gradually move it. Where we are is what I like--but ultimately what I like is doing what our team does best.” – Temple coach Steve Addazio on what he was looking for by naming former backup Chris Coyer his starting quarterback. Coyer played most of Temple’s 35-31 loss to Ohio last week and gets the call for Wednesday’s matchup with Miami (Ohio). The Owls are set as 13-point favorites at home.

    Notes and tips

Penn State opened as a 3-point underdog for this weekend’s game against Nebraska before news of the sexual abuse scandal involving former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. Now as speculation continues to grow that Joe Paterno has coached his last game, many books have taken the line off the board. As of Tuesday evening, a number of shops still had the line on the board, but had Penn State at +3.5. Penn State officials elected to cancel Paterno's weekly press conference Tuesday, but reports claimed he did speak with a gathering of people at his home later in the evening.

The pointspread for Wednesday’s Miami (Ohio)-Temple matchup is on the move. Temple opened around -12.5 at most books before dropping to as low as -11 earlier this week. However, that line is on its way back up at most shops and sat around -13 as of Tuesday evening. About 55 percent of *********** Consensus bettors are backing Temple.

The Philadelphia Flyers could get a major boost if captain Chris Pronger is able to return to the lineup Wednesday night against Tampa Bay. Pronger has been on the shelf since taking a high stick to the eye on Oct. 24. Pronger has participated in all aspects of Philadelphia’s practices over the past couple days but said he will likely wait until Wednesday’s morning skate to decide his status. Philadelphia is set at -105 at Tampa Bay.

College funds: Wednesday's best NCAAB bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Liberty Flames at No. 19 Texas A&M Aggies (-18.5, N/A)

The Aggies are going to have to deal with an unexpected speed bump early this season as they deal with being one of the Big 12’s favorites.

After Billy Kennedy was hired to man the bench back in May, he was forced to take a leave of absence to undergo treatment for Parkinson’s disease. Associate coach Glynn Cyprien will lead the club until Kennedy returns and has already addressed the hype surrounding the team.

"We addressed it on the first day for a total of about five minutes," Cyprien told reporters. "And I think these guys ... because they're a veteran team, understand it's not where you start but it's where you finish. And it hasn't come up again."

Junior Khris Middleton is one of three returning starters and 10 lettermen on the team and could be poised for even bigger things after averaging 14.4 points and 5.2 rebounds last season.

These Aggies will come out with a bang.

      Pick: Aggies

Duquesne Dukes at No. 16 Arizona Wildcats (-9, 148.5)

The Arizona Wildcats may have some problems getting on track.

They lost Derrick Williams to the NBA when he went No. 2 overall to Minnesota and sophomore guard Lamont Jones transferred to Iona. The Wildcats struggled early in their first game of the year and headed into the half against Valparaiso with just a two-point lead.

They ended up rallying for a 73-64 victory, but couldn’t cover as 14.5-point favorites.

"We're not the 16th-ranked team in the country," Arizona coach Sean Miller told reporters. "Maybe at some point we can get to that spot, but we still have a ways to go. These early games give us the opportunity to learn."

We’ll take the coach at his word even though Duquesne is looking to replace its top two scorers from last season.

      Pick: Dukes

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at Ottawa Senators (+110, 5.5)

The New York Rangers had to endure an epic road trip before playing their first home game at MSG, but they made their first home stand of the season count.

The Rangers went 4-1-1 at Madison Square Garden and have won their last four contests heading into Wednesday’s date in Ottawa.

"It's hard when you go on the road for that amount of time because sometimes there's a let-down feeling that we're home and it's going to be a lot easier,” backup goalie Martin Biron said after blanking Winnipeg 3-0 Sunday. “There was none of that. It was a lot of hard work that has paid off in the end and that has to keep going."

However, the injury bug is messing with the Blueshirts’ roster. Defenseman Marc Staal is still out with a concussion, Mike Rupp is sidelined with a knee injury and Wojtek Wolski just landed on the shelf with a sports hernia.

Still, the Rangers are showing a lot more life than they did earlier this season. They’re going to be a tough team to play against as long as they keep their staple players in the lineup.

        Pick: Rangers

Philadelphia Flyers at Tampa Bay Lightning (-125, 5.5)

Philadelphia owns the league’s top offense, producing four goals per game while Tampa Bay sits fifth in the league averaging 3.1 goals per contest.

So if you’re a big fan of clogging the neutral zone and 1-0 final scores, this game probably isn’t for you.

Philadelphia is coming off 9-2 destruction of the Blue Jackets and has already scored at least seven goals in three different games this season.
"Things just seemed to be clicking out there," James van Riemsdyk told reporters. "I don't know, we were making good passes up and down the ice and making smart plays with the puck. When you do that, it makes the game look a lot easier out there."

The Lightning are just 3-9 on the road so they’ll be happy to get back home in front of their home fans. Seems like the over is the logical play in this one.

        Pick: Over

            Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- There is a new racino at Aqueduct in Queens; in the first ten days it was open, they did $15M in business. Lot of action.

-- According to some ratings they did on espn.com this week, worst home field advantage in NFL goes to the Dolphins and Colts.

-- Seems like lot of the blame for the Colts' demise is being handed to Chris Polian, GM Bill Polian's son. Lot of key behind the scenes people with the Colts have left, apparently because of young Polian.

-- Former Tennessee hoop coach Bruce Pearl has a new 3-hour Sirius radio show, twice a week. After the last four days, the stuff Pearl did to get fired all seems kind of minor.

-- Miami Marlins appear to be the team pursuing Jose Reyes the most, as free agency begins. Hanley Ramirez would move to third base.

-- A couple in Arkansas recently had their 20th child; the mother is 45, the father is really, really tired. Apparently these people have a reality show on TLC, because, you know, everyone has a reality show.

            ********************

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Our NFL Bottom 5, top 8.........

            32) Colts—9 down, 7 to go, and then they can decide whether to trade the #1 pick, trade Peyton Manning, or let him and Andrew Luck try and co-exist. Will be an interesting decision, if it comes to that.

            31) Rams-- Inexcusable loss in Arizona Sunday makes them 9-31 in Year 3 of the Spagnuolo Era, which needs to end soon. He’s a terrific defensive coordinator, overmatched as a head coach. In related news, Jeff Fisher is currently unemployed. Look for the Eagles to scoop Spags up as soon as the Rams fire him. He'll improve their defense a lot.

            30) Redskins—Daniel Snyder must love owning this generation’s version of the ’76 Buccaneers. If I wasn’t lazy, I’d look up Mike Shanahan’s coaching record with/without John Elway playing. Its not pretty.

            29) Panthers— They’re fun to watch but still 2-6. Coaching staff has shown a knack for butchering game management, which should be the easiest part of the job. Of course, if Mare hadn’t snap-hooked field goal at end of the Minnesota game, they’re not on this list.

            28) Vikings—I grew up rooting for the Los Angeles Rams, who lost more than one outdoor playoff game in the frigid Minnesota winter (one of them ruined my 10th birthday). There is no way on God’s green earth I want the Vikings moving to LA, so people of Minnesota, vote that new stadium in. Keep your hideous Vikings.

            8) Lions—Monsters of Motor City visit Monsters of Midway this week, trying to sweep the Bears.

            7) Texans—Wait until you see this offense when Andre Johnson gets healthy. Sleeper team for AFC champs.

            6) Steelers—You cannot let Joe Flacco drive 92 yards to beat you on your home field. Bad omen.

            5) 49ers-- +12 in turnovers, which means they’re playing great defense and are taking advantage of the breaks they’re getting.

            4) Giants—Would it kill them to let Eli Manning run no-huddle offense the whole game?

            3) Ravens—Great football teams have talent scouts who find players like that Smith kid at WR, and GMs smart enough to draft/sign them.

            2) Saints—Throwback uniforms are cool because they’ve never changed their helmets; same ones Charlton Heston wore in a football movie in the late 60’s, when he played a fading QB at the end of his career.

            1) Packers—When their defense scores, they’re pretty scary.

              Armadillo's Write-Up

              Wednesday, November 9

Mississippi State won its opener by 10, playing seven guys; Bulldogs have two quality big guys, two senior guards- they're picked #5 in SEC this year. Akron has three starters back from 23-13 team that was 9-7 in MAC and won MAC tourney, with two OT wins- they lost six of top six scorers from LY, have six new players, but have won 23+ games six years in a row. Zips are #2 pick in MAC East this season. .

St John's was down 7 at half Monday, won by 15; Red Storm used only seven guys-- they were 12-25 from line, 4-15 from arc, as a young team struggles shooting, but ran well when they forced turnovers. Lehigh has four starters back from LY's 16-15 team that lost to USC by 27, to Penn State by 14; they're picked #3 in Patriot League this year. Coach Lavin was at practice Tuesday; unsure if he will coach this game.

Texas A&M coach Kennedy has Parkinson's, so team is being coached by an interim right now; Aggies have three starters back from 24-9 team that was 10-6 in Big 12- very strong inside, a top 20 team in offensive rebounding and getting to foul line. Kennedy wants to play faster, but it is unclear if his guards can score well enough to do it. Liberty was 19-13 LY, has four starters back but is picked only 8th in Big South; they lost by 21 to Notre Dame, by 30 to George Maon LY.

Arizona won its opener by 9; they used nine guys for 15+ minutes, so they've got better depth than most. No Wildcat starter made a 3-pointer, so shooting could be an issue. Its a big advantage to have already played a game while your opponent hasn't played. Duquesne was 19-13 LY, 10-6 in A-14; they lost to Pitt by 14, West Va by 3, George Mason in double OT. Dukes have good guards but their big guys are shaky.
