College football odds: Week 11 opening line report

Stanford seemingly plays with fire every week. For those legions of players out there who ride the Cardinal every week, and there’s a lot of you out there, you know what we’re talking about.

When you have Andrew Luck under center, though, you can make up for a lot of things. And for this year’s Stanford team, that means big finishes, and plenty of covers.

“Every single road game, we have started slow on offense, and every single road game our defense has kept us in the game,” Stanford coach David Shaw said. “That has been the way it’s been all year.”

Good thing for the Cardinal though, is that their game of the year, vs. Oregon on Saturday, is at home.

“We just try to run our offense,” Shaw said, “and keep them off balance and mix in our play action game.”

They’ll be doing plenty of that this week vs. the Ducks. But the results could be different. After all, though they clearly dismantled a soft schedule and deserve to be unbeaten, there are questions about Stanford when they finally run into one of the nation’s big boys.

Well, the Ducks, whose lone loss to LSU seems like ages ago, are one of those.

“We had to give some respect to Oregon, but we definitely wanted to make Stanford a favorite,” Pete Korner of Esportclub, LLC, in Las Vegas, told ***********. “It’s is a tight one. But I thought 3 was too much.

The Wynn Las Vegas, which is the first book in Nevada to post college football odds, disagreed and opened a point higher than the Sports Club’s number at Stanford -3 (-120).

“Oregon has shown they have the ability to win it, certainly,” Korner said. “But it is Stanford’s game here. It’s their time, they’re at home, and this is their shot.”

And with that, let’s take a look at some of next week’s other marquee games. We’ll list the Wynn’s numbers and tell you what Korner’s line consultant group sent out to its clients.

Virginia Tech (+1) at Georgia Tech

The sexier-than-expected ACC race will be in full focus on Thursday night, as the Hokies take on the Yellow Jackets. Berths in the league title game are still very much up for grabs, and this game will go a long way toward clearing up the picture.

“Lot of opinions on this one,” said Korner who recommended the game as a pick’em. “We went right down the middle. It should be a good game on primetime.”

West Virginia (+3.5) vs. Cincinnati (Paul Brown Stadium)

Tough to figure out the Mountaineers, who had positioned themselves so nicely in the Big East after a road win at Rutgers two weeks ago. But now, Cincinnati is in the driver’s seat to win the worst league in the BCS. This game, keep in mind, is not on the Bearcats’ usual field.

“West Virginia will make a bowl somewhere, but really, they’re not playing all that well,” Korner said. “Cincinnati, on the other hand, is really playing well these days, and we had to show for that.”

Miami (+10) at Florida State

Sentimental, traditional and emotional. This game will be all three, though just not that high on the national radar. That said both teams, now that the pressure is off, have been playing well of late.

“The money will come in on Florida State, so we wanted to be just above the 10 mark,” Korner, who sent out FSU -10.5, said. “They are playing better, and are putting up points. Though I do think the wiseguys will take Miami here.”

Tennessee (+14) at Arkansas

Give credit to Arkansas for continuing to deliver in the shadow of LSU and Alabama. It likely won’t get them anywhere, but they do have interest across the betting world, and can score points with the best of them.

“I think they win this one big, and have been playing real well for themselves quietly,” Korner said. “I expect that this line might go up.”

The Wynn held this line back because of the uncertain status of Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray who’s battling a bad thumb.

Alabama (-18) at Mississippi State

The Bulldogs are in a tough spot here. Alabama will be angry and out for blood, as they try to erase the memory of its 9-6 home loss to LSU. Primed for a bounceback, the line has to be aware of that.

The Wynn opened with the Crimson Tide favored by 18 points while some offshore shops went with Bama -17. Korner’s group went a bit higher, installing the Tide as 21-point chalk.

“We are counting on Alabama to play big here on the road, and get it back together,” Korner said. “This is another game where they can just call the final score. I do like them to bounce back here, and not quit on the title race. A few upsets and they can be right back in the mix.”

Oklahoma State (-18.5) at Texas Tech

The Cowboys received a close call from Kansas State, and boy, are there holes on that Oklahoma State defense. But they are where they are, and if they win out -- though that will be difficult -- they should have a chance at the BCS title game.

“Oklahoma State sure is entertaining, and I’ll be honest. I was watching their game, while LSU-Alabama was going on,” Korner said. “Texas Tech cannot keep up with this team. Oklahoma State is going to maul these guys.”

Michigan State (-3) at Iowa

The Spartans have a good chance in the Big Ten race, which either shows you that Michigan State is at least a little impressive, or the league isn’t any good. Either way, the Spartans have an opportunity to get closer to respectability vs. the Hawkeyes.

“Close game, good game,” Korner said. “Not that Iowa cannot win, they certainly are capable of getting a victory. But it means more to Michigan State. I expect this line to hold all week.”

TCU (+14.5) at Boise State

With some fun matchups between these two teams in the past, we couldn’t let this one get by us. TCU is not the TCU we’ve come to know. But the Horned Frogs can still play, and perhaps throw a scare into the Broncos.

The Sports Club sent out Boise State -16 while the Wynn went a little lower (-14.5) but still over the key number.

“TCU is not doing it these days, and Boise has everything to lose,” Korner said. “It means way more to Boise, and they’re at home, so I had to go with the biggest number I could.”

Nebraska (-2.5) at Penn State

This looked like a great matchup two weeks ago. Now, the Cornhuskers are coming off a home loss, and the Nittany Lions find themselves surrounded by a cloud of controversy, thanks to an arrested former coach.

The Wynn likes Penn State more than Korner’s group. The Vegas sportsbook opened with the Cornhuskers under a field goal favorite while the Sports Club recommended Penn State +3.5.

“Interesting game, for sure,” Korner said. “People are still betting Nebraska every week, so we wanted to go over the standard 3. I don’t know if Penn State will be distracted, they might be. But I think Nebraska can win and cover anyway.”

Western Michigan at Toledo (-11), 8 p.m., ESPNU

Toledo faces a major letdown situation when Western Michigan visits the Glass Bowl for Senior Night.

The Rockets (5-4, 5-4 ATS) lost a back-and-forth 63-60 home game to Northern Illinois last Tuesday, an emotional defeat that delivered a major blow to their MAC title hopes.

The Broncos (5-4, 5-4 ATS) arrive off of a bye week and haven’t played since Oct. 29.

Toledo won at Western Michigan, 37-24, last September, despite being outgained 416-268.

The Line

Toledo opened as a 10-point favorite Sunday at the Las Vegas Wynn. By Monday, the Rockets were giving 11 with even a few 11.5s available offshore.

The underdog has covered the spread in the last five meetings, with the road team covering four straight.

Quarterbacks

Sophomore Terrance Owens and junior Austin Dantin have split snaps throughout the year, but Dantin played the vast majority of the game against Northern Illinois. He completed 20 of 33 passes for 321 yards and four touchdowns. Dantin had 173 yards with two touchdowns and an interception last year against Western Michigan.

Senior Alex Carder has put up huge numbers for the Broncos, throwing for 2,274 yards already, with 18 touchdowns and only eight interceptions. He threw for 403 yards and four interceptions against Toledo last year.

Weather

Temperatures are expected to drop into the low 40s, with light winds and only a slim chance of precipitation.

Injury Report

Toledo starting safety Charles Rancifer was suspended for the Northern Illinois game. Coach Tim Beckman had not said publicly if Rancifer would be back against Western Michigan.

Western Michigan is not reporting any significant injuries.

Trends

Over is 20-6-1 in Toledo’s last 27 games as a home favorite and 19-7 overall as a favorite.

WMU is 10-21-3 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.

Toledo is 40-23 ATS at the Glass Bowl since 2000.

Northern Illinois (-6) at Bowling Green, 8 p.m.

The Huskies cannot afford to come out flat against an up-and-down Bowling Green team that is expecting to get its leading rusher back and had an extra week to stew over an ugly 27-15 loss at Kent State on Oct. 29.

The Falcons will need to improve their shoddy run defense (91st, allowing 190.78 yards per game) if they want to hang with the Huskies, who are averaging 246.78 rushing yards, ninth most in the nation.

On the bright side, Northern Illinois’ rushing defense is worse, surrendering 202 yards per game.

Northern Illinois hasn’t won in Bowling Green since 1986. The two teams have not met since 2008, a 16-13 Northern Illinois home win.

The Line

Northern Illinois opened as a 7-point favorite Sunday at the Las Vegas Wynn. But the line had dropped to -5.5 at a lot of books by Monday afternoon.

The Falcons are 10-22 ATS in their last 32 home games and just 2-5 ATS as a home dog under coach Dave Clawson.

Quarterbacks

Northern Illinois boast the best QB in the conference in senior Chandler Harnish (1,962 passing yards, 18 TDs, 4 INTs). Harnish also leads the Huskies in rushing.

Sophomore Matt Schilz threw for 400 yards against Kent State. He has 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, but has been sacked 20 times.

Injury Report

Bowling Green is expected to get leading rusher Anthon Samuel back. The freshman, who has five 100-yard rushing games, missed the loss to Kent State with a concussion.

Cornerback Jeffrey Garrett, a starter before suffering a hamstring injury in early October, could return, but is considered a game-time decision.

Weather

Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-50s with a 13 mph South wind and the possibility of late thunder storms moving in during the second half.

Trends

Bowling Green is 11-4 ATS in its last 15 games in November.

Under is 8-3 in Falcons’ last 11 games as underdogs.

Broncos haven't played in 10 days, while Rockets scored 60 points at home last Tuesday but lost; they've allowed three kickoff returns for TDs in last their three games, winning four of last five. Northern Illinois won three of last four games vs Bowling Green-- home teams won five of last six series games. Miami (Ohio) at Temple: What bettors need to know

Miami (Ohio) RedHawks at Temple Owls (-12.5, 42.5)

When it comes to weekday football, the Mid-American Conference is where it’s at. The MAC is in the spotlight Wednesday when the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks visit the City of Brotherly Love to face the Temple Owls.

The RedHawks won the most recent meeting between the schools, dropping the Owls 23-3 in Fred Yager Stadium last November. Temple has won three of the five all-time meetings straight up but is just 2-3 against the spread.

Line moves

Temple opened as high as a two-touchdown favorite but has since been bet down to -12.5. The total opened around 42.5 points.

Weather

For November night football, it doesn’t get much better than Wednesday’s forecast. The temperature at Lincoln Financial Field will be in the mid 50s with a slight 4-mph breeze blowing ESE from corner to corner. There is an 18 percent chance of rain later in the evening.

Ups and downs

Temple took on some stiff competition to start the schedule, but appeared to be the team to beat when conference play began. The Owls, however, have dropped back-to-back games and sit 3-3 in MAC play heading into Wednesday.

Miami (Ohio), on the other hand, has won two games in a row and four of its last five, posting a profitable 4-1 ATS mark in that span. The RedHawks rolled over the basement on the MAC East, taking down Buffalo and Akron the past two weeks.

"We are at home against an outstanding Miami team," Owls head coach Steve Addazio told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "They are averaging 22 points per game. They are second in the MAC in passing offense (271.1 yards per game). Their quarterback (Zack Dysert) is a heck of a player."

Dysert has been picking up steam heading into this contest. He’s completed almost 72 percent of his passes and thrown for seven touchdowns and just one interception during Miami’s two-game streak. He’s also been a weapon on the ground, rushing for 32 yards and a score in the win over Akron.

Dysert ranks fourth among non-seniors with 7,381 career passing yards, trailing OU's Landry Jones, BU's Robert Griffin III, and USC's Matt Barkley.

"We have our work cut out for us," Addazio said. "We are here at 5-4 right now. We hope we are an edgy football team."

Pierce by piece

Most programs would be pushing the panic button after losing the conference’s top running back to injury. But not Temple.

The Owls are playing the waiting game when it comes to Bernard Pierce’s head injury (questionable), suffered against the Ohio Bobcats last Wednesday. Pierce has also been slowed by a leg injury this season, but his replacement Matt Brown is just as explosive.

Brown, a junior, is ninth in the MAC in rushing, totaling 577 yards on 99 carries – an average of 5.83 yards per attempt. He’s found the end zone twice this season and could get the lion’s share of the rushing game if Pierce is unable to play.

"Hey, if you are going to tote the ball, and you are going to run a power run game, and you are going to carry the ball 20 to 25 times a game, you are going to get whacked by a high velocity by a lot of people,” Addazio told reporters about Pierce and other injuries on the Owls roster.

Quarterback Chris Coyer, who took over as Temple’s No. 1 QB after a solid performance off the bench in the loss to the Bobcats, also picks up the slack in the rushing game. Coyer rushed for a team-high 184 yards, to go along with 123 yards and three passing touchdowns.

“They threw me in there and I knew I was gonna play some throughout the game - I didn’t know I was gonna play that much,” Coyer told the media. “But I felt ready and I felt prepared and we went with it and I felt great.”

Where the action is: Mid-week football line moves

For our weekly look at football lines on the move, we spoke to MGM Mirage sportsbook manager Jeff Stoneback. He tells us why these lines are moving and where they might end up.

NCAAF

Hawaii at Nevada -12.5 ----> -15

Stoneback said professional bettors swooped in fast on this one. "They laid 12.5, 13 and 14 with us," he said. "We went to 15 on Wednesday."

The Warriors sometimes struggle when they come to the mainland, Stoneback noted, recalling their Sept. 17 visit to UNLV. Hawaii lost 40-20 as a 17-point favorite.

"And UNLV is probably one of the 10 worst teams in the country," he said.

Stoneback doesn't see the line moving higher, as it's already crossed the two-touchdown plateau.

Wyoming at Air Force -13.5 ....> -15

Air Force is just 3-6 ATS, compared to Wyoming's 5-3 ATS mark. And the Cowboys just played TCU tough, losing 31-20 as a 19.5-point dog. The game was tied 17-all at halftime.

"This one kind of surprises me a little bit," Stoneback said. "Over the last few weeks Wyoming seems to be improved."

All the action came from professional bettors.

The Falcons, laying 16 at some books, are 0-5 ATS in their last five home games.

NFL

St. Louis at Cleveland -2.5 ....> -3 (even)

Sharps immediately bet the Browns up to a field goal, then there was a buyback on the Rams, bringing it down to -3 even.

"There are still a lot of 2.5's out there, so I wouldn't be surprised if we took some more money on the Rams and the game closed at 2.5," Stoneback said.

He called Cleveland's offense inept and said this game will be hard on the eyes.

New Orleans at Atlanta +1 ....> Pick

Money came in on the host Falcons, who are 22-5 in the Georgia Dome in regular-season games under coach Mike Smith.

"New Orleans' defense is still suspect, and Atlanta has played a little bit better the past few games," Stoneback said.

Some offshore books list the Falcons as 1-point favorites. Stoneback said he has no idea which team will end up being favored by kickoff.

The total on this game dropped from 51 to 50 at MGM Mirage. The Saints won last year's meeting in Atlanta, 17-14.

Tennessee at Carolina total: 45.5 ....> 46.5

The Cam Newton phenomenon has led to some shootouts for the Panthers.

"They've been a high-scoring team this year," Stoneback said of the Panthers, who average a higher-than-expected 23.4 points, good for 16th in the league. "Every week it seems we get action on the over with them."

Five of eight Carolina games have soared over the total, with an average combined score of 49.2.

Virginia Tech Hokies at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (+1, 48.5)

THE STORY: The ACC’s Coastal Division likely will be decided at Bobby Dodd Stadium, when No. 9 Virginia Tech visits No. 19 Georgia Tech Thursday night. The winner of this matchup has won the division every year since divisional play began in 2005. The Hokies own four of those victories, including 28-21 last year in Blacksburg, Va., and lead the all-time series 5-3. The Yellow Jackets rank second in the ACC in scoring (37.6), while the Hokies allow an ACC-low 15.4 points per game. Both teams were off last Saturday.

TV: ESPN

LINE MOVES: This ACC battle opened at some books as a pick 'em. Georgia Tech then moved to a slight 1.5-point favorite before action on the Hokies flipped the home side to +1. The total opened at 49 and has since moved to 49.5.

WEATHER: Game-time temperatures will dip into the low 40s, with winds blowing NW at speeds of up to 8 mph.

ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH (8-1, 4-1 ACC, 2-7 ATS): Nine players have intercepted passes for the Hokies, who also average three sacks per game. Running back David Wilson has rushed for more than 100 yards in six straight games - the longest such streak in Frank Beamer’s 25 seasons as head coach. Quarterback Logan Thomas (6-6, 254) has thrown for 1,934 yards and run for 285 more while accounting for 17 TDs. Jack Tyler will start at MLB over Barquell Rivers because Tyler’s speed gives the Hokies a better chance of stopping Georgia Tech’s option attack.

ABOUT GEORGIA TECH (7-2, 4-2 ACC, 5-3-1 ATS): The Yellow Jackets rank second nationally in rushing (328.0). Quarterback Tevin Washington bounced back from a string of poor outings with a terrific overall game in the upset of Clemson. He made good option reads, threw the ball fairly well and ran for 176 yards, most ever by a Tech QB. Receiver Stephen Hill is averaging 30.4 yards a catch, which leads the nation. He has a knack for making spectacular catches, but drops some easy ones. The defense has gotten a spark from CB Jemea Thomas, who had two INTs, a forced fumble and two pass breakups against the Tigers.

EXTRA POINTS:

1. The Jackets are 7-4 vs. ranked teams under coach Paul Johnson.

2. The Hokies rank seventh nationally in rushing defense (86.3).

3. The Hokies are 17-5 on Thursday Night Football, the Jackets 11-13.

TRENDS:

* Under is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
* Hokies are 1-4 ATS in their last five meetings.
* Road team is 4-1 ATS in their last five meetings.
* Underdog is 5-0 ATS in their last five meetings.

PREDICTION: Georgia Tech 27, Virginia Tech 24 – The Jackets got their confidence back by upsetting Clemson and will feed off a raucous home crowd.

Houston Cougars at Tulane Green Wave (+34, 71)

THE STORY: Undefeated Houston is off to its best start in school history, and sixth-year senior Case Keenum is a big reason why. After breaking former Hawaii star Timmy Chang’s NCAA record for career passing yardage, Keenum is now the NCAA’s career leader in every major passing category. The 11th-ranked Cougars’ road matchup with Tulane is their last tuneup before closing the regular season with tough games against SMU and Tulsa, which will decide the Conference USA West Division crown. Houston has won eight straight in this series and the last three matchups at the Superdome.

TV: CBS Sports Network

LINE MOVES: The Cougars opened as 34-point favorites and have remained steady, with a few 34.5 on the market. The total opened at 71 points and has also stayed put at most books.

ABOUT HOUSTON (9-0, 5-0 Conference USA, 7-2 ATS): In their 56-13 blowout victory at UAB last weekend, the Cougars topped 50 points for the fourth straight game and fifth time this season. Keenum threw for 407 yards in the win and leads the nation with 3,626 passing yards and 34 touchdowns. Lost in the shuffle of Houston’s pass-happy offense, running back Michael Hayes has racked up 553 yards on the ground and is tied with Charles Sims with a team-best seven rushing scores. The Cougars lead the country in total offense, passing offense and scoring offense.

ABOUT TULANE (2-8, 1-5 Conference USA, 3-7 ATS): Since a season-opening win over Southeastern Louisiana, the Green Wave have lost their last four home games by an average of 21 points. Last week, Tulane dropped its seventh straight game overall and gave up three passing touchdowns and three rushing touchdowns in a 45-24 loss at SMU. Coach Bob Toledo stepped down three weeks ago, but the Green Wave haven’t improved much under interim coach Mark Hutson, losing in blowout fashion to Memphis, East Carolina and SMU.

EXTRA POINTS:

1. Houston’s eight consecutive wins in this series have come by an average score of 39-16.

2. "I'm not going to fully enjoy it and celebrate it until after the season,” Keenum said this week about all his records. “Hopefully, I will have a lot more to celebrate after the season than just the records."

3. Tulane ranks 102nd nationally in total defense (423 yards per game).

TRENDS:

* Cougars are 8-0 ATS in their last eight meetings.

South Florida at Syracuse: What bettors need to know

South Florida Bulls at Syracuse Orange (+3.5, 51.5)

THE STORY: One team will end a frustrating few weeks when South Florida visits Syracuse for a Big East battle Friday night. Syracuse was riding high after beating West Virginia Oct. 21, but has dropped games at Louisville and UConn since and still needs a win to become bowl eligible.

South Florida won its first four games before losing the last four - the longest slide in the program’s 15-year history. The Bulls were beaten by three points in each of the last two games -- blowing a 14-point, fourth-quarter lead in a 20-17 overtime loss at Rutgers Saturday. South Florida has been outscored 70-42 in the fourth quarter and overtime. Syracuse is 4-1 at home and USF is 1-3 on the road.

TV: ESPN2

LINE MOVES: South Florida opened as a 4-point road favorite but has been bet down to 3.5. The total opened at 51.5 and has remained steady.

ABOUT SOUTH FLORIDA (4-4, 0-4 Big East, 3-5 ATS): Bulls quarterback B.J. Daniels has thrown for 2,027 yards and 12 touchdowns, and rushed for 440 yards and four TDs. But four of his five interceptions have come in the last three games. Darrell Scott rushed for 100 yards for the first time in five games at Rutgers, but was held out of practice with injuries early this week and is day to day. Linebacker DeDe Lattimore has become a major factor with 40 tackles and 3.5 sacks the last four games.

ABOUT SYRACUSE (5-4, 1-3 Big East, 3-6 ATS): The Orange are ranked 99th in the nation in rushing offense. Leading rusher Antwon Bailey has totaled 120 yards in his last two games after four straight 100-yard performances. Quarterback Ryan Nassib has 18 touchdown passes and six interceptions. Wide receiver Alec Lemon had a career-high 157 yards last week and has a team-leading 47 receptions. Safety Phillip Thomas has six interceptions, which leads the Big East and is tied for second in the nation.

EXTRA POINTS:

1. Syracuse won last season in Tampa, but USF won the first five in the series – three at the Carrier Dome.

2. USF leads the nation in tackles for losses per game with nine and is second in sacks (3.5).

3. Syracuse’s Nick Provo has set a single-season school record for receptions for a tight end (39).
