Saturday’s betting tips: Ducks quacking with Thomas, James

    Who’s hot

CFB: Washington is 6-1 ATS in its last seven overall and 4-0 ATS in its last four home games.

CFB: Kansas State is 6-1 ATS in its last seven overall and the over is 5-1 in its last six overall.

CFB: The under is 5-0 in the last five meetings between Purdue and Wisconsin.

NHL: The Sharks are 6-1 in their last seven overall.

CFL: Winnipeg is 4-0-1 ATS in its last five meetings with Calgary.

    Who’s not

CFB: Maryland is 1-6 ATS in its last seven overall and 0-5 ATS in its last five home games.

CFB: Vanderbilt is 0-6 ATS in its last six road games.

CFB: Nebraska is 1-5 ATS in its last six home games.

NHL: The Islanders are 0-6 in their last six overall.

CFL: Montreal is 0-4 ATS in its last four overall and 1-4 ATS in its last five road games.

    Key stat

305, 4, 0 – Andrew Luck had a field day last season against Oregon State, passing for 305 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions in a 38-0 blowout. Another barrage of passing can be expected when Stanford, a 20.5-point favorite, visits Oregon State on Saturday night. A porous Beaver defense is ranked 60th in the nation in passing yards allowed at 222.2 yards per game.

    Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

Can 6-2 Washington stay within 16.5 points of 7-1 Oregon on Saturday night? That’s the question bettors are asking of the host Huskies. In order to do so, they will have to contain a high-powered Oregon attack that is expected to have all hands on deck.

The Ducks are without suspended cornerback Cliff Harris, but quarterback Darron Thomas and running back LaMichael James are good to go. An October knee injury forced Thomas to miss a game against Colorado and he played sparingly last week against Washington State. James, who missed two games and rushed only 13 times versus Wazzou, is reportedly 100 percent for the first time since an October 6 knee injury against California.

    Biggest games on the slate

LSU Tigers at Alabama Crimson Tide (-4.5, 41.5)

    Notable quotable

"You can't get frustrated winning. You can get frustrated by not starting out like you expect your team to do. We know how good we are. We expect to start faster. We expect to play way better than we played." – Arkansas’ receiver Jarius Wright after his team’s 31-28 escape last weekend against Vanderbilt. The Razorbacks trailed 21-7 in the second quarter and 28-17 in the third before clawing their way back. They are hosting South Carolina in a matchup of 7-1 teams on Saturday.

    Tips and notes

The San Jose Sharks were not too pleased with their 5-2 loss at the Rangers on Monday. In fact, Joe Thornton put the setback entirely on his own team and called New York "the softest team we played against on this road trip." On said road trip, the Sharks won five in a row before ending it with Monday's loss. They bounced back with an inspired performance on Thursday and beat Pittsburgh 4-3 in a shootout. San Jose has scored at least two goals in seven straight games and has scored four goals four times in this seven-game stretch heading into Saturday's contest against Nashville.

Something will have to give when Utah visits Arizona on Saturday. Utah, a 3.5-point underdog, boats the Pac-12's best defense at 325.6 yards per game (yes, that is the best in the conference; 22nd in the nation). The unit is second in the conference and 11th in the nation in passing defense. Facing the Utes is Wildcats' quarterback Nick Foles, who is third in the country with 2934 passing yards and first with more than 32 completions per game.

It may be a good idea to wait until the last minute to take action on Sunday's NFC West clash between Arizona and St. Louis. The status of both starting quarterbacks is up in the air as of Friday night, although the news is better for St. Louis. Sam Bradford is questionable after missing two games with a high ankle sprain. Capable backup A.J. Feeley will start again if Bradford can't go. For the Cardinals, Kevin Kolb is doubtful with turf toe. It should be a safe bet that John Skelton will get the nod, although the team's website reported Skelton as saying, "As far I heard, Kevin is still a possibility."

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Calgary Stampeders (-6, 51.5)

After stumbling in Toronto, the Blue Bombers must beat the Stampeders to finish on top of their division, which will give them a week off and a home game for the Eastern final.

However, they will face the Stampeders without QB Buck Pierce, who suffered a knee injury, and without DB Johnny Sears, who was suspended for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Toronto’s QB Steven Jyles Friday night.

And there’s some tension in the locker room too. Defensive end Odell Willis doesn’t appreciate being use in a rotation with teammate Doug Brown and has vented about it on his Twitter account. A loss in Calgary and a win for the Alouettes in B.C. would give Montreal first place, the bye and the right to host the Eastern final.

The Stampeders can still finish second and host the West Division semifinal next week instead of travelling to either Edmonton or Vancouver. But if both the Eskimos and the Lions lose, then the Stamps would take first place and host the Western final.

Drew Tate was pretty solid last week in the win against Montreal but when your substitute is Henry Burris, you have to stay on top of your game to keep the starting job.

      Pick: Calgary

      Montreal Alouettes at B.C. Lions (-3.5, 54)

The Alouettes are going to Vancouver with a chance to take first place from the Blue Bombers – if Winnipeg loses earlier on Saturday. So the Als will only know the relevance of this final regular season when they step on the field of B.C. Place.

In any case, Montreal will be without two key players: LT Josh Bourke (shoulder) and WR Kerry Watkins (broken leg). The Als have plenty of resources to replace Watkins but it is not quite the case when it comes to replacing Bourke, their best offensive lineman. The Alouettes have won only once in their last 10 visits in Vancouver since 2001.

The Lions would secure first place in the West and will host the division’s final in two weeks with a win. Travis Lulay was outstanding last week with 322 passing yards and three touchdowns which made him Offensive Player of the Week. At the end of the game, with the Eskimos within two points, Lulay led an 80-yard surge to put the game away.

      Pick: B.C.

Hockey Night In Canada: NHL betting preview
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Toronto Maple Leafs (-111, 5.5)

What a difference a year makes. Indeed the tables are turned as this Original Six rivalry resumes at Air Canada Centre. Toronto is back in first place and, as the wins continue to stockpile, the legions of Maple Leafs fans are truly beginning to think about more than just a playoff berth. Meanwhile, Boston, mired in last place, has hardly played like a Stanley Cup champion.

          Great in goal

Goaltender James Reimer was regarded as the anchor to the Maple Leafs’ season of resurgence. And make no mistake, he still may be. But his injury has opened the door for Jonas Gustavsson and Ben Scrivens.

Gustavsson, who defeated New Jersey 5-3 Wednesday, is 4-3-0 with an .886 save percentage and getting better. And Scrivens, who started in place of Gustavsson Thursday, posted his first NHL victory with a 4-1 decision over Columbus.

          A Boston boost?

There are two things, perhaps, moving in the direction of Boston. The Bruins are coming off three full days of rest and they snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators Tuesday.

In Beantown, they’ll take as much optimism as they can find. After all, the Bruins are 11 points behind the front-running Maple Leafs in the Northeast Division - a league Boston owned last year. And with just eight points overall, the champions are tied with the Islanders for the lowest total in the Eastern Conference.

          Sweeping success for Seguin

Tyler Seguin clearly had his ups and downs en route to the Stanley Cup last year in Boston. He arrived at the rink every night during the playoffs, not knowing if he’d even play that night or not.

But, he's been a true force this season and has backed up his pre-draft hype. He enters this game with four goals, 11 points, 36 shots, and is a plus-8 on a team that has struggled on both ends of the ice.

He won’t, however, be the hottest forward in Toronto. That label belongs to Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul, who has three goals and five points in his last two games.

          History

On Oct. 20, the Bruins drew first blood in this series, wiping out the Maple Leafs 6-2. Tim Thomas made 26 saves as Boston took advantage of Toronto playing on the back end of back-to-back nights. The Bruins have gone over in four of the last five games.

Edmonton Oilers At Phoenix Coyotes (-125, 5)

The CBC crew probably wishes this matchup was in February, when it could have escaped the dead of winter for a little comfort in the Arizona desert. But as it is, you still have a dandy of a nightcap that features two of the hotter teams in the Western Conference.

          Nikolai the great

When the season started, Edmonton coach Tom Renney and general manager Kevin Lowe were intent on a nice, little goaltender platoon with Nikolai Khabibulin and Devan Dubnyk. That may still happen, but for the time being, the show belongs to the veteran they call "Khabby."

Versus the Kings in Los Angeles Thursday, Khabibulin recorded his second shutout of the season and 45th of his underrated career. He is now 6-0-2 with a league-leading 0.98 goals-against average.

Keep in mind, he lost 32 games as the Oilers stumbled last year. But things have changed dramatically in Edmonton. In its last home game, a 4-2 win over St. Louis Sunday, cheers of "Khab-by, Khab-by" rained down from the Rexall Place stands.

Plenty of hope (and seats) in Phoenix

Speaking of good goaltending, the Coyotes ran into some when they were blanked by Nashville's Pekka Rinne, 3-0, Thursday. But Phoenix still has a bit of mojo going for it heading into this tilt.

The Coyotes have still won three of the last four games and scored 12 goals in those victories. They are alive and well in the jam-packed Pacific Division race and don't seem to mind that they are dead-last in attendance, drawing just 9,544 fans per game.

          Wiley Whitney

You can count veteran forward Ryan Whitney among those who would like the Coyotes to stay in Phoenix. The 39-year-old left wing has found the fountain of youth in the desert. He has five goals and 12 points this season.

Breaking it down further, he has five points in his last four games and all but one of his goals have come in Phoenix.

          History

The Coyotes have won six of the last seven in this series dating back to Jan. 5, 2010, including two shootout victories. Eight of the last nine Edmonton games have gone under.

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Saturday's best NHL bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Winnipeg Jets at New Jersey Devils

After a tough start to the season, the Jets have won four of six and three of four to improve their record in their first season back in Winnipeg to 5-6-1.

This will be the Jets’ fifth installment in a season-long seven-game road trip, but they are showing no signs of slowing down. On Thursday night in New York, Winnipeg blanked the Islanders 3-0. Ondrej Pavelec saved all 34 shots he faced.

The Devils may have a tough time both scoring the puck and stopping the puck on Saturday. Ilya Kovalchuk pulled a leg muscle on Thursday and is listed questionable.

Will Martin Brodeur or Johan Hedberg be in goal for New Jersey? Brodeur is 0-2 with a 3.90 after allowing five in Wednesday’s home loss to Toronto. Hedberg has let in 10 goals over his last three appearances, although he at least managed to win in shootout (4-3 final) at Philly on Thursday.

The Devils are 1-3 in their last four and 2-5 in their last seven.

            Pick: Jets

Pittsburgh Penguins at Los Angeles Kings (-126, 5)

A four-game winning streak in mid-October is certainly a thing of the past for the Kings. They have lost three in a row and four of five heading into Saturday’s game against Pittsburgh.

The stretch hit rock bottom on Thursday, when Los Angeles failed to find the back of the net in a 3-0 home loss to Edmonton. In its last three outings, L.A. has been outscored 9-4.

Pittsburgh has dropped two straight, but the team is clearly in decent form. Both losses came by one goal (including in a shootout on Thursday at San Jose) and the Penguins have still won five of their last seven overall.

Assuming Marc-Andre Fleury is minding the net for Pitt, the Kings may have a tough time ending their scoring drought. Fleury is 7-2-1 with a 1.96 GAA this season and he is 4-1 with just six goals allowed in his last five.

            Pick: Penguins

                Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Some NFL trends to ponder with Week 9 upon us......

-- Patriots are 20-6 vs spread in game following their last 26 losses.

-- Chargers covered five of last six games that followed an appearance on Monday Night Football.

-- Falcons covered five of last seven as a road favorite.

-- Arizona failed to cover its last six divisional games.

-- Bears are 2-6-1 vs spread in their last nine post-bye games.

-- Broncos covered only three of last 11 divisional games.

                ***********************

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Armadillo's guide for visiting Las Vegas

                13) I’m just back from my 8th trip to Las Vegas in the last two years, so I’m going to pass along some stuff that could help you if you decide to visit America’s favorite city. If it doesn’t help, forget where you read it. Las Vegas is a great place to visit and along with New York City, the best place to people watch. Everyone should go at least once, since there really is something for everyone, and not just gambling.

                12) I usually stay at PH Towers behind Planet Hollywood, but this time I went to South Point, which is about 6-7 miles south of the Strip. Rooms were about 33% cheaper than on the Strip, and they have a shuttle to/from the airport.

                11) Nice place; they’ve got 24-hour bowling, a movie theater, inexpensive food, a highly underrated sportsbook and the gift shop is open 24 hours. It’s a little odd not being on the Strip, but for this one time, South Point was a fine place to stay.

                10) No matter where you stay, you should walk on the Strip at night at least once, just to see all the lights and people. It’s a lot like Manhattan; the city that never sleeps. South Point has a shuttle to the Strip that is only $8 a day and well worth it.

                9) Of all the places sportsbooks in Las Vegas that I’ve been to, and I haven’t been to all of them, I like Planet Hollywood’s and South Point’s the best, but for football, definitely South Point. PH”s sportsbook was just too small for NFL Sunday; the 75 cent hot dogs at South Point are really good, and the pizza at the Del Mar Deli next to the book isn’t bad either.

Best sandwich in Las Vegas is at the Carnegie Deli in the Mirage, and if you get Dr Brown's soda with it, its that much better.

                8) They film a football handicapping show on Tuesday nights in the Del Mar Lounge; it shows on the Velocity Channel, if you can find that anywhere. I have seen it here in Albany, so someone carries it.

                7) Take it from me, you haven’t lived until you’ve bowled at 4am.

                6) I always ask for a smoking room, because fewer people want them, so they’re usually nicer rooms. Smoke doesn’t bother me, and the bigger rooms are fun to have. Still feel strange seeing people smoke in bars and the casino, since you can’t do that in New York.

                5) If you go see Phantom of the Opera at the Venetian, get tickets in the first row of the balcony; it gives you a terrific view of the chandelier, which is important in the story. Trust me on this.

                4) If you book a room for 3+ nights at PH Towers, they usually upgrade you to a suite, which is very excellent. Having a big bed with a flatscreen TV on the wall is pretty cool; so is pushing a button and having the shades go up.

                3) Go to Town Square, do some shopping, then go to the stand in the park area and order an Avocado Smoothie. Thank me later; they’re quite outstanding.

                2) Battitsta’s is an excellent Italian restaurant located across Flamingo from the entrance to Bally’s pool/sportsbook. Very good food. The Italian restaurant on the Strip end in Fashion Show **** that starts with an M is also very good.

                1) Still want to go to the gun range and take aim at some targets; I’ve never done that. Wouldn’t mind a return trip to the pawn shop on Pawn Stars that is closer to downtown. Ah, maybe next year.
