Friday’s betting tips: Could cold weather kill USC bets?

Weather to watch

When the USC Trojans landed in Boulder, Colorado Thursday, it was 33 degrees. Temperatures aren’t expected to be quite that cold Friday (39 degrees with 12 mph winds), but it’s worth noting USC hasn’t played in snow since a game in Notre Dame back in 1957. The Trojans are set as fat 21-point road favorites against the Buffaloes.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Sam Bradford, St. Louis Rams- Quarterback Sam Bradford increased his practice workload Thursday in hopes of recovering in time to play in Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals. Bradford is nursing a high-ankle sprain that has kept him out of the past two games. He was limited to individual drills for the second day in a row, but looked strong and is expected to take on a larger role in Friday's workout. Bradford has thrown for 1,177 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions in five games so far this season. A.J. Feeley will make his third straight start if Bradford can't play.

Notes and tips

During their bye week, the Kent State Golden Flashes moved junior Josh Kline from right tackle to left tackle and the move clicked immediately in the club’s 27-15 upset against Bowling Green. Kent State didn’t allow a sack in for the second time this season while the club’s running backs averaged 4.7 yards per carry. Kent State is a 1-point home favorite against Eastern Michigan Friday.

The Houston Texans may have their top receiver back in the fold this weekend when they face off against the Cleveland Browns. Head coach Gary Kubiak said Thursday that star wideout Andre Johnson's hamstring is feeling better, and suggested he would be a game-time decision for Sunday's contest. Johnson hasn't played since suffering a serious hamstring in Week 4 that eventually required surgery. Houston has eased him back into practice situations, keeping him out of sessions Wednesday and Thursday. He will try to participate fully on Friday before being reevaluated. Johnson, 30, has 25 catches for 352 yards and two touchdowns so far this season. The Texans are set as 11-point favorites.

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend......

13) LSU-Alabama is the most-hyped college football game in the last five years; hope its a terrific game. I'm thinking if this one is close, there will be a rematch in the national title game in New Orleans in January.

12) Can the Steelers avenge their Week 1 beatdown at Baltimore?

11) Don't think any baseball free agents will sign this early, at least not the big-name guys, but will any new managers get hired this weekend?

10) Curious how Georgia suspends three running backs for failing drug tests, but they get suspended the week of the New Mexico State game, not the week of the Florida game. Funny how that works.

9) If the Patriots don't spank the Giants Sunday, avenging their loss in the Super Bowl last time the teams met, thats a huge red flag about Patriots' chances to win the Super Bowl this year. Giants have been winning but not dominating lesser teams; they're ripe for a beatdown.

8) I'm curious to see how Wisconsin plays after gagging two weeks in a row against quality teams; now they're back to being a 25-point favorite, and they usually enjoy playing the bully. Could be long day for Purdue.

7) Jets-Bills is an interesting game. Jets are 0-3 on the road, giving up 30+ points in all three games, Bills are 3-0 in Orchard Park, scoring 30+ points in all three games. Very, very important game for the Jets.

6) Texas Tech won at Oklahoma, then got crushed at home by Iowa State; now they visit the Longhorns in Austin. I've got no idea what to expect from the Red Raiders. Am guessing their coach doesn't either.

5) Tim Tebow in the Black Hole? Interesting contrast. This could be last chance for Tebow to impress the Broncos enough to remain starting QB. We'll see how much of the Raider offense Carson Palmer has picked up.

4) Kansas State got crushed at home by Oklahoma last week; now they're going to Stillwater to play an even better Oklahoma State team. K-State needs a very strong effort to keep this game respectable.

3) How will the Chargers bounce back from Monday night's debacle? If they upset the Packers, Snap-gate will be forgotten.

2) South Carolina-Arkansas is an interesting game; Gamecocks weren't too impressive at Tennessee this week. They'll need to be better this week to beat a Razorback team that is usually tough to beat at home.

1) The whole Peyton Manning situation is odd; he hasn't played all year, but he's not on IR; as long as they're winless, the Andrew Luck issue will hang over their heads. What would be the point of bringing Manning back for a couple of meaningless games in December? Or maybe the games will not be meaningless. I mean, if they can finish 0-16 and then trade the #1 pick for a bunch of high draft picks, thats better than being 2-14 and just getting one draft pick, right?

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Edmonton Eskimos (-8.5, 47)

The Edmonton Eskimos are still fighting for first place in the West despite losing 29-20 last week in Vancouver.

After struggling in the midseason, Ricky Ray has been pretty solid down the stretch and has six touchdown passes in his last three games. Running back Jerome Messam had a tougher night than usual in British Columbia and was limited to only 62 rushing yards, but expect him to bounce back this week.

On defense, the Eskimos have been sloppy over the last few weeks and will need to tighten up. Out of the playoff picture, the Roughriders are trying to end the season on a bright note but will also look to give coach Ken Miller a final win before he retires. It could also be the last game for 33-year-old Jason Clermont.

Pick: Edmonton

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Calgary Stampeders (-6, 51.5)

After stumbling in Toronto, the Blue Bombers must beat the Stampeders to finish on top of their division, which will give them a week off and a home game for the Eastern final.

However, they will face the Stampeders without QB Buck Pierce, who suffered a knee injury, and without DB Johnny Sears, who was suspended for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Toronto’s QB Steven Jyles Friday night.

And there’s some tension in the locker room too. Defensive end Odell Willis doesn’t appreciate being use in a rotation with teammate Doug Brown and has vented about it on his Twitter account. A loss in Calgary and a win for the Alouettes in B.C. would give Montreal first place, the bye and the right to host the Eastern final.

The Stampeders can still finish second and host the West Division semifinal next week instead of travelling to either Edmonton or Vancouver. But if both the Eskimos and the Lions lose, then the Stamps would take first place and host the Western final.

Drew Tate was pretty solid last week in the win against Montreal but when your substitute is Henry Burris, you have to stay on top of your game to keep the starting job.

Pick: Calgary

Montreal Alouettes at B.C. Lions (-3.5, 54)

The Alouettes are going to Vancouver with a chance to take first place from the Blue Bombers – if Winnipeg loses earlier on Saturday. So the Als will only know the relevance of this final regular season when they step on the field of B.C. Place.

In any case, Montreal will be without two key players: LT Josh Bourke (shoulder) and WR Kerry Watkins (broken leg). The Als have plenty of resources to replace Watkins but it is not quite the case when it comes to replacing Bourke, their best offensive lineman. The Alouettes have won only once in their last 10 visits in Vancouver since 2001.

The Lions would secure first place in the West and will host the division’s final in two weeks with a win. Travis Lulay was outstanding last week with 322 passing yards and three touchdowns which made him Offensive Player of the Week. At the end of the game, with the Eskimos within two points, Lulay led an 80-yard surge to put the game away.

Colorado Avalanche at Dallas Stars (-150, 5.5)

Young hockey teams often play much better on the road than they do at home. They don’t have the pressure of playing in front of their home crowd and get a chance to bond while on the highway.

That’s definitely the case with Colorado this season. The Avalanche are just 1-4 in Denver, but 6-1 on the road. They’re also catching a major break Friday night with Dallas’ Steve Ott expected to sit out with a hip injury.

Say what you will about Ott, but he’s one of the main factors in Dallas’ success this season. He has eight points in 11 games with 26 penalty minutes while centering the second line and playing on both special teams.

Without Ott, who isn’t expected to play again until at least Tuesday, Dallas was forced to juggle its lines considerably throughout practice this week.
The Stars will miss him in this one and you have to think Colorado’s happy to be back on the road.

Pick: Avalanche

Montreal Canadiens at Ottawa Senators (-125, 5.5)

After often looking disinterested last season, you have to be impressed with Ottawa’s quick start. The Sens still don’t have a ton of talent or depth, but they’re proving to be hard to play against.

And that’s all anyone can really ask from them.

They reeled off six straight wins before dropping a 5-3 decision to the Bruins on Tuesday. The Bruins put together one of their best efforts of the season in that one, thanks in large part to the Montreal Canadiens. Montreal took both ends of a home-and-home against the Bruins before Ottawa visited Beantown, so it was a tough spot for the Sens.

Making matters worse, captain Daniel Alfredsson is still out with a concussion and no timetable has been set for his return.

The Habs have been idle since then and the break allowed the club to get a couple days away from the ice. Montreal should have lots of legs to jump on Ottawa early.
