Thursday’s betting notes: UCF favored on short rest

    Who’s hot

NCAAF: Akron is 4-1 against the spread in its last five.

NCAAF: Tulsa is 8-1 against the number in its last nine road games.

NHL: San Jose is 13-3-1 in its last 17 games against Pittsburgh.

NHL: Los Angeles has won each of its last four meetings with Edmonton.

    Who’s not

NCAAF: Central Florida is 1-5 against the spread in its last six.

NCAAF: Boston College is 2-10 against the spread in its last 12 home games.

NHL: Detroit is 0-5-1 in its last six games.

NHL: Nashville is 3-8 in its last 11 games in Phoenix.

    Key stat

1 – Minnesota Wild goaltender Josh Harding allowed just one goal in back-to-back wins over the potent Detroit Red Wings. Harding, who missed all of last season with a knee injury, turned aside 72 of 73 total shots to earn another start Thursday against Vancouver. The Wild are currently pegged as +105 home underdogs.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Duncan Keith, Chicago Blackhawks – Keith won’t play Thursday against the Florida Panthers as he recovers from a left hand injury. He blocked a shot in Monday’s victory against Nashville and is listed as day-to-day. He has six assists and is a plus-3 this season.

    Game of the day

Florida State at Boston College (14.5, 44.5)

    Notable quotable

''It does help having gone through this before, especially with our seniors who have been through this several times. The younger guys didn't know what to expect those first couple of times when we had shorter weeks, but it's about preparation. It's really important to have good practices and watch extra film to make sure you are ready for the game.'' - UCF senior right tackle Nick Pieschel on playing on a short week. The Knights are now set around -1.5 at home to Tulsa after opening around -2.5.

    Notes and tips

Miami (Ohio) opened as high as -16.5 at some books for its home date against Akron, but now that the RedHawks have dropped to about -14 at most shops, bettors are all over them. As of Wednesday night, more than 70 percent of *********** Consensus bettors were backing the RedHawks, who have covered in three of their last four games overall.

A mid-foot sprain could force Oakland Raiders running back Darren McFadden to miss this weekend's game against the Denver Broncos. McFadden was held out of Wednesday's practice despite having the bye week to recover from the injury, which he suffered Oct. 23 against the Kansas City Chiefs. It isn't known when the 24-year-old will be able to return to practice, or whether he'll be healthy enough to suit up Sunday. He was on crutches and wearing a protective boot on his foot Wednesday. McFadden has been one of the top running backs in the league so far, carrying the ball 113 times for 614 yards and four touchdowns. Michael Bush will get his first start of the season if McFadden can't go. Oakland is an 8-point favorite.

Nashville Predators center Mike Fisher is expected to return to the ice for Thursday's game against the Phoenix Coyotes. Playing in just his third game since returning from offseason surgery, Fisher suffered a concussion after he was hit by Anaheim Ducks defenseman Francois Beauchemin during Saturday's 3-0 victory. Fisher has two goals and two assists this season. Nashville is a +100 underdog at Phoenix Thursday.

Canadian Bacon: Week 19 CFL odds and picks
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hamilton Tiger Cats at Toronto Argonauts (+2, 50.5)

This is the only game being played this week that is guaranteed to have no playoff implications.

So it’s probably not surprising that the Tiger-Cats will sit RB Avon Cobourne, linebackers Rey Williams and Jamall Johnson as well as receiver and return specialist Marc Thigpen.

Plus, coach Marcel Bellefeuille announced this week that QB Jason Boltus may play in Toronto, saying “it was the perfect opportunity to give him some play time and contribute to his development.”

It looks like the Argos will have a chance to give their disappointing season a happy ending in front of their fans. Wideout Maurice Mann, who was recently traded to the Argos by the Tiger Cats, will also find extra motivation by facing his former teammates for the first time.

      Pick: Toronto

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Edmonton Eskimos (-8.5, 47)

The Edmonton Eskimos are still fighting for first place in the West despite losing 29-20 last week in Vancouver.

After struggling in the midseason, Ricky Ray has been pretty solid down the stretch and has six touchdown passes in his last three games. Running back Jerome Messam had a tougher night than usual in British Columbia and was limited to only 62 rushing yards, but expect him to bounce back this week.

On defense, the Eskimos have been sloppy over the last few weeks and will need to tighten up. Out of the playoff picture, the Roughriders are trying to end the season on a bright note but will also look to give coach Ken Miller a final win before he retires. It could also be the last game for 33-year-old Jason Clermont.

      Pick: Edmonton

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Calgary Stampeders (-6, 51.5)

After stumbling in Toronto, the Blue Bombers must beat the Stampeders to finish on top of their division, which will give them a week off and a home game for the Eastern final.

However, they will face the Stampeders without QB Buck Pierce, who suffered a knee injury, and without DB Johnny Sears, who was suspended for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Toronto’s QB Steven Jyles Friday night.

And there’s some tension in the locker room too. Defensive end Odell Willis doesn’t appreciate being use in a rotation with teammate Doug Brown and has vented about it on his Twitter account. A loss in Calgary and a win for the Alouettes in B.C. would give Montreal first place, the bye and the right to host the Eastern final.

The Stampeders can still finish second and host the West Division semifinal next week instead of travelling to either Edmonton or Vancouver. But if both the Eskimos and the Lions lose, then the Stamps would take first place and host the Western final.

Drew Tate was pretty solid last week in the win against Montreal but when your substitute is Henry Burris, you have to stay on top of your game to keep the starting job.

      Pick: Calgary

      Montreal Alouettes at B.C. Lions (-3.5, 54)

The Alouettes are going to Vancouver with a chance to take first place from the Blue Bombers – if Winnipeg loses earlier on Saturday. So the Als will only know the relevance of this final regular season when they step on the field of B.C. Place.

In any case, Montreal will be without two key players: LT Josh Bourke (shoulder) and WR Kerry Watkins (broken leg). The Als have plenty of resources to replace Watkins but it is not quite the case when it comes to replacing Bourke, their best offensive lineman. The Alouettes have won only once in their last 10 visits in Vancouver since 2001.

The Lions would secure first place in the West and will host the division’s final in two weeks with a win. Travis Lulay was outstanding last week with 322 passing yards and three touchdowns which made him Offensive Player of the Week. At the end of the game, with the Eskimos within two points, Lulay led an 80-yard surge to put the game away.

      Pick: B.C.

        Thursday, November 3

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Thursday’s best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edmonton Oilers at Los Angeles Kings (-175, 5)

Ryan Smyth was the heart and soul of the Oilers for years and if he had it his way, he never would have left Edmonton. But now that he’s back with the Oil, it seems like he never left.

Smyth, who has five goals and 10 points in 11 games, has played a big part in Edmonton’s fast start. The Oilers sat tied for first overall in the Western Conference heading into Wednesday night’s action and should be a handful for the Kings as Smyth visits one of his old teams.

"It's a lot of fun playing for this team right now," Smyth told reporters. "The excitement, the energy from day to day, the creativity that the young kids bring, it's all awesome. We just want to keep going. We have some momentum and we have to make sure we keep it going in the right direction."

If you haven’t had a chance to check out Edmonton’s kid line of Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle and rookie Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, get in on this action. They’re fun to watch.

        Pick: Oilers

Winnipeg Jets at New York Islanders (-135, 5.5)

About all you can count on from the Jets is inconsistency at this point in the season. They started the season with five losses in their first six games and have been only marginally better since.

They dropped Florida 4-3 in a shootout on Monday, but were still outshot 20-7 in the first period and 42-31 overall. That was a major problem when the team was based in Atlanta last season and looks like it will be again this year.

Meanwhile, the Islanders are desperate for a win. They have dropped five straight heading into Thursday’s date after showing a lot of promise down the stretch last year. That potential is what’s keeping them from hammering the panic button right now.

"We need a win and we need to get back on track, but we've got to stay positive,” John Tavares told reporters. “It's early in the year, and if we keep playing that way I like our chances."

We like their chances here, too.

        Pick: Islanders

            Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

According to Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook, the six top teams in the ACC this season......

            6) Miami-- Larranaga is upgrade as coach; how will he recruit?

            5) NC State-- Gottfried was 278-154 at Alabama, has been killing it on recruiting trail so far in his first year with Wolfpack.

            4) Virginia-- Shot 39.6% from arc LY, tops in the league.

            3) Florida State-- Defend better than they score; who will get them easy baskets? Very deep team, very athletic.

            2) Duke-- Played three games in China, one in Dubai this summer. My alma mater Albany drove up the Northway to play exhibition games in Canada, and Duke goes to freakin' Dubai. Go figure.

            1) North Carolina-- 5-2 to win national title; only Ohio State (2-1) has lower odds to win the national championship.

            *********************

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Clearing out a very cluttered mind......

            13) So the Cubs fired their manager because the Red Sox didn't make the playoffs? And now Cub icon Ryne Sandberg isn't a candidate to be the new manager in Wrigley? Remember how Art Howe was treated in the movie Moneyball? Like a middle manager with much less respect and input than most managers. Theo Epstein runs his teams like that, so the guy he hires as manager is going to be more obscure than you might think.

            12) The NBA season was supposed to start this week; its pretty sad that these nitwits can't agree on how to divide a pretty big pie, so nobody is getting anything right now. Now that both sides are losing money with games being lost, a solution could be harder to come by.

            11) There are eight Division I college basketball schools in Louisiana; it appears as if seven of them missed the boat badly by not signing the kid we saw play for Washburn against UNLV Tuesday. William McNeill, a junior who missed the whole season LY with a broken foot. Can't say it was a blunder by LSU, but this kid starts for any of the other seven. He was the best guard on the floor by far Tuesday night in Vegas.

I researched his background, thinking he might've gone D-I originally and transferred to Washburn, but he went to the Kansas school straight out of high school and he's a very good student. This is why recruiting is just so damned interesting; good players fall through the cracks.

            10) Last two years, the teams picked #10 in Big East's preseason polls both made the Final Four; this year's #10 is Notre Dame.

            9) Looking at the two local Division I basketball teams, Albany is picked #4 in America East by Blue Ribbon, Siena is picked 9th in the MAAC.

            8) As for the teams that switched leagues this year, BYU is picked 3rd in the WCC, Nebraska 11th in Big Dozen, Colorado 10th, Utah 12th out in the Pac-12. I don't think BYU will finish that high in the WCC.

            7) If you watched the Ohio-Temple football game Wednesday night, you know that Bobcat QB Tyler Tettleton is the son of former major league catcher Mickey Tettleton.

            6) 7 of 12 ACC basketball coaches are in either their first or second year with their current school. An 8th coach, Virginia's Tony Bennett, is in his 3rd year with the Cavaliers.

            5) Montana Grizzlies have won four of the last ten Big Sky basketball tournaments, but during that time, they never won a regular season title.

            4) I can't say enough good things about Southwest Airlines; obviously it is always fun to go to Las Vegas, but they make it so easy to travel. The employees are pleasant, the planes are comfortable enough. Picking up and dropping off luggage goes so simply. A very well-run operation.

            3) WAC lost Boise State this year, loses Nevada, Hawai'i, Fresno State next year, but will add five new teams for basketball. Big changes, but not for the better. All these changes in conference affiliation are dizzying.

            2) When I was a kid, I learned math by figuring out batting averages and shooting percentages; God help today's kids. There are 14 teams in the Atlantic 10, 12 teams in the Big 10, 10 teams in Big 12. Houston, SMU, Notre Dame and Louisville will soon all be in the Big East. Louisiana Tech and Idaho are in the same league. How can kids learn anything this way?

            1) SEC has abolished divisional play for basketball; they're still playing an unbalanced 16-game schedule, but now teams will be seeded #1-12.

Alouettes are 0-5 against spread in last five games, losing last two weeks 26-25/32-37; they've lost four of last six road games, are 1-1 as underdog this season. This is first time since Week 8 that Montreal has been an underdog.
